Stumbled upon this local tapas bar in Barcelona and it quickly became one of the highlights of our trip. We ended up going two nights in a row -- and would absolutely do it again. The two bartenders -- who seem to be a couple -- are the heart of the place. He's got a dry, hilarious sense of humor that sets the tone, and together they make everyone feel like a regular. That said, if you're easily offended or don't appreciate a bit of cheeky banter, this might not be your spot. But for those who enjoy a fun, unfiltered vibe -- you'll love it here. As for the food -- wow. We had the tortilla with meat (not sure what it was, but it was delicious), the artichoke tempura (I would fly across the world again just for these), the fried eggplant, and the meat with chimichurri. Everything was fresh and flavorful. Great food, unforgettable personalities, and a place that feels alive. Take a handheld fan because it is hot - especially during summer. read more

Fantastic hole in the wall serving pinxtos. Opens at 1830pm, gets busy quick. Pop in at opening if you don't have a reservation. Get a bar seat; the bar tenders are great fun and conversation is good. Order a beer (Estrella on tap) and get ready for some great food. Honestly don't even remember which specific pinxtos we ordered; all of them were fantastic. Ones I specifically remembered were the specials (fried calamari, tomato sauce mussels), bacalao, and txistorra. Was worried that some of the cold pinxtos would have issues with soggy bread, but I was pleasantly surprised that the breads retained their texture. €2 a serving. Tastes more like €5 in my opinion. Gasterea serves a wonderful variety of tapas. From seafood to home grown meats. All served up well seasoned and marinated meats on freshly baked baguette bread. The tuna tapa was "star kissed tuna" wrapped with blue fin tuna. The prosciutto tapa was seasoned just right, and the ham tapa was wonderful. The Argentinian veal tapa was great. My wife and I had a wonderful visit to Gasterea which serves a large selection of mouthwatering pinchos for 1.90 euros each. We tried many of the options including the Vinegar Anchovies with Black Olive Tapenade from Aragon, Manchego Cheese and Anchovies, Ham and Bread, Spicy Traditional Sausage from Mallorca with Manchego Cheese, Argentinian Veal Loin with Chimichurri Dressing, Homemade Croquette of Mushrooms, and Chorizo Sausage in Cider pinchos. Each pincho was flavorful and sat on a piece of fresh soft bread which soaked up the sauces nicely. Overall, Gasterea is the ideal pincho bar and a must visit when in Barcelona. read more

Loved this tapas bar! One of my favorite experiences in Barcelona since it's what the locals do. We ended up eating here two days in a row since we liked it so much. The guys who work here are super friendly and were patient with us since we didn't understand the process at first. Get there early so you can order whatever you want or sit towards the back of the bar so you can grab the best selections right when they come out of the kitchen. It starts to get packed around 8:30. No matter how busy the bartenders get they are ALWAYS attentive and will give you whatever you need. I recommend the chicken skewer with yogurt, fried potatoes, chicken curry, cheese with sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese with fig and the crab salad. The pinchos range from 1.9 - 2.9 euro each! Loved this little spot! Delicious vermut, pinxos were so good and service was great! I loved their Chimichurri, it was full of flavor, perfect size for two especially considering the tapas you end up eating with it. We selected it because it was the busiest place that we saw in the past couple of blocks, and rightly so. The place had a great buzz as we walked in, lots of people talking drinking and eating. We were promptly greeted by the gentleman behind the counter who made space for us at the bar. We wee served drinks right away, food was suggested and served and all in a congenial and friendly manner that told us that "this was the place". Stumbled across this restaurant by chance while walking around, and wow we got so lucky. By far the BEST tapas we had in Barcelona. EVERYTHING was delicious, service was incredible!!! The servers were so friendly, making conversation with us (even with their limited English), joking around and they also allowed us to taste test some things before we ordered. Truly an amazingly hospitable group of people; we felt so welcome even as tourists and foreigners. The food is a whole other story to tell. Found this little gem on Yelp. Definitely worth the trip on the metro to get here. Opens up at 7pm, and by 9pm this place is hopping. Suggest getting here when it opens to get a decent seat at the bar. The staff there is super friendly and the menu has English translations on it. If all else fails, the pinchos sit premade freshly behind the glass at the bar, just point and pick whatever looks appetizing. Oh gosh, I'll probably dream about this place for years to come. Dinner here was the highlight of food in Barcelona. Everything we tried was delicious. Boyfriend loved the chorizo one, but my favorite was the goat cheese with candied fig. Just beautiful, melt in the mouth. The eggplant chips with feta and honey were gorgeous as well. Not as rich or greasy as I thought it would be. Lightly sweet with a hint of sesame sprinkled on top to give texture and a twist of flavor. It's a compact space, and can definitely get hectic especially if you don't speak Spanish. Just sort of edge yourself in, grab a menu and order. Staff don't speak too much English, but they understand for the most part and are very nice. They'll look out for you :) read more

Authentic, filled up with locals, delicious, affordable, great service...this was my first tapas bar experience and it was a good one. Skip the tourist traps and go out of your way to visit Gasterea. One of the best meals I had in Spain, and all I had were pinchos, which in this case were like canapes: bread topped with 2-3 ingredients. They were so good and fresh that they almost seemed like a tasting menu. I don't love shrimp, and still had two orders of an incredible one paired with arctichokes and some delicious sauce. I think we had two of sobresade which had some manchego cheese also, and was outstanding. I loved the butifara negra, which had a quail egg on it, and was as good as most morcilla I have ever had. Can't remember all of them now, but there was nothing we didn't like. Melanie had a couple of great glasses of red wine...for 2.20 euros, which seemed like a ridiculously good value. Awesome Pinotxo bar! The space is limited and a lot of people just stand at the bar and order. They don't seem to put a limit or facilitate a reservation system. If you can get in, you can order! It worked out for us since many of the places we walked by didn't let us in because we didn't have a reservation. Barcelona's dinning scene can be quite busy around 9-11pm. Back to the Gasterea! They have many different things on the menu and many of them are quite cheap! Small portions are €1.9 and larger casseroles are €3.25. You can fill up your stomach on a €15 bill. A few recommendations: grilled prawn with artichokes and broken egg with ham. We didn't even get to try their veal and steak yet. Definitely worth another visit! read more

My friend, who is a local, took me and my friends for a walk around this cute neighborhood and decided to grab a bite here. One of my favorite meals in Barcelona! Everything we had was so fresh and delish- the best part? It was such a great deal! We literally just pointed at everything that looked yummy in the case and went from there. Nothing disappointed. Has this place changed owners or something. I simply do not understand the hype. The place smelled of chlorine as soon as we stepped in, which usually makes us opt for another place, but since there were so many good reviews we stayed... We had the following pintxos: boquerones, bacalau tempura and sobrasada. We also ordered two tapas: aubergine chips with cheese and honey and beef flank with chimichurri sauce. The aubergine was the best thing in my opinion, followed by the boquerones. The beef flank was a disaster. It tasted like salted pork and was swimming in a starchy gravy and there was no chimichurri worthy of its name anywhere. And when we pointed this out, the waiter just denied that there was anything wrong. The waiters seemed stressed but cocky which made us feel very uncomfortable. I struggle to see what gave this place such rave reviews, there are much better places in this town! read more

It's a bit overwhelming when you first walk in if you've never been to a tapas bar style restaurant before. You gotta fight for a seat! Especially here cuz it gets POPPIN. And for good reason! This was probably the best tapas that we had in Barcelona! It is definitely off of the beaten path and way north of the tourist traps aka La Ramblas, but well worth the walking journey. Space is kinda small and tight but its definitely worth it. The owner is behind the bar and is entertaining to watch him pour the wine and call the shots from behind the bar. It was almost like watching a maestro direct a symphony but instead he was yelling orders, directing staff, and plating food. The prices for each tapas dish was very reasonable and the taste was amazing. We sat there conversating with the people around us, drinking wine, eating good. It's almost like a neighborhood bar but with great food and drinks. Definitely should be on your places to visit in Barca. read more

This place is excellent. It's very small--basically a narrow corridor of bar seating, and somewhat hectic feeling, especially if you don't speak much Spanish, but the food is fantastic, the prices so affordable, and the service fast and friendly. Cash-only, and you're not allowed to take photos of the staff, but I photographed my tapas to my heart's content. The menu has all the Spanish and English names of the dishes, and some "casserole" items (they come in the small round brown ceramic dishes) that you can directly order. The rest, though, you have to keep an eye and ear out for and raise your hand with the number of items you want. Someone brings plates out with the hot tapas on them from the kitchen and rings the bell, and then a server announces what it is and everyone starts clamoring. So, it's best to try to get bar seating as far back in as you can, though they do bring out plates closer to the front. I would recommend noting down the keywords of the Spanish names of the dishes you're particularly interested in and try to keep an ear out for those in particular...but pretty much everything I had was amazing. And, even as a single non-Spanish-speaking diner, they kept an eye out for me. read more

I spent three days in Barcelona and combed yelp for reviews on good tapas spots and EVERY SINGLE one was a tourist trap. Vaso de Oro is too old school. Senyor Parrellada has shitty food. Basically anyplace anywhere close to the main drag is going to serve you a concept of tapas that is too antiquated and contrived to meet the standards of gastronomy today. Instead, head to the outskirts and pick up something that fits the soul of the contemporary patrons around you. The Gracia area is exactly that and is going to be a great place to find some food that retains character. No anemic looking patatas bravas here. The service is amazing. The owner is a true gentleman who wants you to have a good experience at his restaurant, which is beyond affordable and a bargain for the quality of the product you get. We had multiple dishes, but the stars are the cazuelitas, which are braised dishes. I had the matambre which was a beef tenderloin stewed in onions and garlic as well as a friedcodfish that was baked in a tomato pepper sauce. Super comforting! His montaditos are also great, some notables were those that included cheese, as well as the codfish and crab salad. I highly recommend this place. Highly. Highly. read more

Our first tapas experience went well! We didn't see the arroz con pulpo stew on the menu until the end, when we were full. Too bad! Instead, we pointed and perused and ended up with: - Black sausage with red peppers and quail egg - Shrimp/artichoke/sesame sauce - Catalan sausage - Chorizo - Goat cheese with candied figs - Vinegared anchovies with olive tapenade - Steak with chimichurri (the bartender was offering this around, and I thought it was a gift, but it was not. Lesson learned) - Cod salad - Some kind of Scandinavian brand of awesome tonic water The standouts to me were the cod (a chunky, red peppery spread of it), the black sausage (unapologetically bloody and who can argue with a quail egg?), and the shrimp, because it was supposed to be Asian style but tasted like tahini, in a good way. My mom liked the other sausages, but I thought they were too salty and had a little too much of whatever spice makes something taste like a breakfast sausage from the freezer section at the grocery store. I loved the no-pressure atmosphere here. It was equally fine with them whether you got one thing or fifty things, and you could take as much time as you needed. Short story - if you're passing through Barca and looking for delicious but affordable tapas, THIS IS THE PLACE. For tapas, many places in Barca are overpriced for the quality (many are not! but come with an even higher price tag and/or remain unknown to tourists). well-worn travellers, we were dying for authentic but affordable tapas. It was a goldilocks situation: We'd been to overpriced, half-empty tourist traps (too cold), and had just found a place with *gasp* free tapas but it was totally jammed with locals and was obvious little to no english, or patience, would be thrown our way (too hot). We had just about given up hope when we ended up outfront of Gasterea thanks to Yelp. At 1.90 euros per tapa, and looking at the vibe inside which appeared to be an appropriate mix of locals, expacts, and a smattering of tourists, we felt it was worth a shot. It was 11pm on a saturday and it was quite full but the saving grace was along one long wall there is one ongoing, elbow high, thin counter that you can stand at and still enjoy a beer and tapas, so searching awkwardly for a stool or waiting ages for one wasn't necessary. We simply walked in, found space along this counter, and stood there reading the chalk menus. Gasp - a small plastic menu with english was available. We weren't sure how to order when the barman just walked up to us. We asked for cervesas and two tapas. When i told him, in bad spanish, that i speak very little spanish, he smiled and was extremely patient and kind with us the whole night - i highly recommend *always* learning to say you don't speak the language IN the language you don't speak. (rather than shouting slowly in your mother tongue). He seemed to very much appreciate the meek attempt to speak spanish and i do think this helped us the rest of the night. Well, to the real point - the tapas/pinxtos were killer. 1.90 gets you one portion so it still adds up but as least you're not throwing down 9 euros on calamari and getting some nasty must of it in return. If you really didnt like it, you're only out 1.90. Luckily, even at 1.90, the tapas were pretty exquisite in quality. We enjoyed literally everything we ordered. there was one other menu of casual plates that were 2.95 - the portions were much bigger (not huge of course but enough to share) and i think a better ratio of food for price. However, not as much variety. We had beers, cider, and wine (4 each i think, total) and about 7 tapas (plus 1 or 2 treats on the house!) and we paid 32 euros. And thus, Gasterea has my heart forever. read more

It was full and two of us had to stand, but tapas were tasty and service was friendly. All the tapas are served on chunks of baguette, which is not my thing, but the clientele was local and the whole experience seemed authentic. This place is cash only, so be ready.
