The good: This was an amazing park with such a cool space theme. They went hard on the theme and had so many space elements. I've seen rocket ship parks before but this one is the best of them. It's extremely spacious. There are picnic bench areas as well. They also have a bathroom. It's next to a big baseball field and basketball court. There's a smaller play area for age 2-5 and the taller structure for 5-12. There are large grassy field areas. It's a bit hilly. There's plenty of parking in a private lot. I was happy there was no sand nor wood chips so it didn't get messy. The bad: It seems like the overhang or structure for shade above the picnic benches are under construction or removed. The interesting: There's a giant lion statue made of stone that my toddler loved. It's donated from Lion's Club. read more

They updated their playground! It's a space themed play area with lots of cool space ship and even have xylophones and drums. My kids love it here. The park is spacious, lots of hills which I used to roll down as a child. A very updated and nostalgic park for me. Great for kids and dogs. They also have a baseball field on the bottom of a hill. read more

Even tbough this park is small, it has a lot to offer. The park is well maintained and there's A LOT of parking with not one, but two lots on opposite ends of the park. There's also plenty of benches for parents to rest while the kiddos play on the 2 playgrounds here. There's a huge area of grass here. The lawn is well kept and always green. There's also 2 baseball fields and basketball courts. At the edge of the park, they also have tennis courts. At the front of the park, there are 3 huge gazebos with bench tables and sinks with running water. There's also charcoal grills here if you want a BBQ day. There's more than enough trash cans if you want to have a party here. read more

The updated playground is adorable! The space theme is awesome and there is so much for kids to do. There's a great swing that all the kids love, but there's only one. There's a walking path and plenty of grass for picnicking and play. The park is clean and well maintained. The restrooms are not so clean. read more

I love this park.. you have to go uphill a bit before getting there which was wonderful for my pup. She loves to walk and have free reign. We don't go unleashed there but there's plenty of other owners and pups that hang out at the park. There's a playground and we just love this park. read more

There's an observatory here!!!!! It's amazing that this small community has one. And oddly enough, it's located below the street, in a little nook at the end of the parking lot. It's the actual club house for the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, and is open to the public every Wednesday after 7 pm. It's also crazy that there's a baseball/softball field with all the nite lighting...there's also a lovely gazebo perfect for parties. Also grill setups. And on street level, two lighted tennis courts. Go visit on Wednesday and climb the spiral staircase to look thru the 8 inch telescope there. read more

Went to the observatory tonight with a meetup group (thanks Randy!) and I had a great time! Very knowledgeable cosmologists there who showed us celestial bodies and gave us a great lecture. It was my first time there and I'll be going back for more planet and stargazing. Parking was a little bit cramped because there was a little league game taking place but not too bad. Great location to exercise or take a stroll at night! It is well lighted and it feels safe because many people come here. For the walkers, they have a paved area for you to walk on. They host baseball/softball games, and the basketball courts are usually filled with people as well. There is also a playground area for children, so it's perfect for the whole family to come and have a picnic or hang out. They have restrooms for the public, but I haven't used them yet. At night, there are also groups of people who bring their dogs out to have some free play. The water fountains even have a section for dogs to get a drink, which I thought was pretty neat. Garvey ranch is the best park there is in monterey park. one of the biggest park, and one that's by far the pack-est during the weekend. All the parking spots usually are all taken by the afternoon during the weekends. There's like party every weekend at that park that makes me wonder if there are really that many birthday going on or people just like to hang in the park. Great spot to hangout in the summer! It feels 10 degrees coolers with the tree and the wind blowing. It's really nice if you have no where to go and have no AC like me. There's an Observatory that opens every Wednesday for free viewing and then there's a tennis court in the back, actually two tennis court in the back. There's also two side to the park, one in the main entrance and one in the back entrance. read more

It's in a nice place full of shade so for summer weather but the equipment needs to be updated for safety reasons. The rubber needs replacement under the swing and the whole play area should just consistently have that rubber in case children jump off or fall from the play sets. This park has lots of space, grass, and walkways. It's large and pretty clean and simple. I feel safe here because there are many elderly exercising. There is a nice playground for the kids, but it doesn't have sun shades. Oh, and sand. Watch out for the sand (if you're the type of parent that can't stand sand). read more

I typically come here during the night time to overlook the lights of SGV. Though it's not as clear because of all the tall trees covering it, it's still very nice. During the day time, there is a mini observatory you can check out. It has a lot of history for the city. The park itself is pretty big with different sections. Direction coming here can be a bit confusing. Just follow the maps but watch out for signs when nearing the park. read more

The Garvey Ranch Observatory is utilized by the Los Angeles Astronomical Society. The LAAS opens the observatory for the Public every Wednesday night from 7:30 PM to 10:00 PM. Admission is FREE! Children are always welcome. If you visit the observatory, you can go into the dome and learn about the 8 Inch Refractor and view many of the objects in the night sky over Los Angeles. There are free Telescope-Making classes and free seasonal classes which you can learn about by visiting the Los Angeles Astronomical Society on Facebook or at their web site at www.LAAS.org.. During the warmer months, you can bring up your telescope and join the members of the LAAS for a star party out on the lawn in front of the observatory. If you pick the timing right, you can have this place all to yourself. There's no noise pollution; unless from little children who are enjoying their youth. I'm not complaining, just an observation. There are some joggers who takes their jogging kinda too seriously, so, look out for them. It's a fairly clean place, some trash on the floor by the jungle gym. I find a little annoyance since there's an abundant of trash cans available, can't you just walk a few feet to throw it away? Needs more park benches to be placed under the trees or shaded area. Yeah, there are benches under the trees right next to the jungle gym, but those are reserved for parents who are watching their kids. On the same note, I like to sit on the bench without getting burnt by the sun. Sitting on the grass is nice (sometimes), but I prefer not to have stains on my pants. On to the good stuff, my 7 and 9 year old nephews loves the place. They love running on the spacious grass areas, and can't resist rolling down the hills. I'm a 28 year old man and I'm not shy to say that I play in the Jungle Gym when there's no one around. I only wish there was a wooded area where I can get lost, but I digress. If you're an adult, it's a nice place to center yourself. Bring your kids if you want to tire them out, don't forget to bring a football, baseball, basketball and kite along as well. You'll have a pleasant time, but no guarantee. read more

Whats Inside - two baseball diamonds with dugouts, picnic areas with grills, two jungle gyms, One bball court on black top (not the nicest court), Lots of grass, tennis courts (up top slightly separated from the rest of the park, MPK museum, and AN OBSERVATORY! The park is pretty large (not humongous) and very well maintained. There is plenty of room to roam and there are plenty of places to take a seat and relax. I'll have more to say once I hit up that observatory. Parking lots can be found on either side of the park and there is a lot for the tennis courts. I always come to play tennis and when I go walking. The area is quite calm and in the early mornings and evenings there are many people who do a daily walk. They walk their dogs or take the time to catch up with their friends. The playground is cute and perfect for children. read more

It's a bit isolated (located in a residential neighborhood), so it's also relatively safe. The grass is well kept, and there is not graffiti or any unsightly vandalism. Wow, this place is like an Oasis in the desert. My group of friends and I decided to have a picnic here and it was great. It wasn't overly crowded and the park was really clean. There are plenty of tables and free parking. Furthermore, they have 2 baseball fields. However, the basketball court here could use some improvement. The court wasn't flat and 2 out of the 4 courts weren't very usable. Overall, a spacious park that is quaint and calm. Great place to have a picnic. read more

So this is a very secluded park hidden in a residential neighborhood near Monterey Park. I know it says it's in Monterey Park but I don't really associate this area with this city so yeah I guess it is still technically in the city of Monterey Park. Anyways I like the look and feel of this park because it has two small parking lots big enough for 20-30 cars and either side of the park. It looks like it was built in a hole and the 2 baseball fields are in the bottom. Where the fields are the Montebello Xtreme youth football team practices there so parking might get a bit tight some nights during the week during football season. They do also have two small playgrounds near each parking lot with bathrooms and picnic tables. They just rebuilt a basketball court with four hoops and two full courts that are gated. The courts are side by side so they do get a bit crowded. They also have a recreational center that does hold classes nightly which I have seen but never attended. Lastly their bathrooms which is one of the most important things to mention when discussing a park in my opinion I think they are a 3 out of 5. The bathrooms are not horrific but they can have better maintenance for a public bathroom but definitely usable and that is my opinion and my wife's. So you don't have to drive to a nearby fast food restaurant but you might have to hold your breath and if you come here late you might have to bring your own T.P. read more

Went there tonite (wednesday nite) for the telescope viewing and visits. It's a public event and children are welcome just like any other LA Astronomical event. My kid loves planets and we went to at least ten other events by the same society (LAA society) and ALL members always friendly towards him. We went to the Griffith Observatory and other museums and also this Garvey event before. All the members and volunteers are well educated and courteous. The people we have met are also very impressed how much my little kid knows about the universe. It's great to exchange ideas and a opportunities for ANYONE to understand our universe better. It's meant to be for EVERYONE. However, tonight's experience is totally different. I knew something is wrong when I walked into the "room", it feels like a private party that we are NOT invited. Not one person say hi to us when we walked into the room full of people sitting. Then, this older white lady keeps telling us...."if your son wants to play, you can go next door to the park"...then, we were reminded "he is not allowed to touch anything and jump for excitement, cause the WHOLE building can feel his 30 pounds body shaking if he jumps up and down when he sees the telescope." The accusation didn't stop there, she goes on saying that as parents we ought to "control" our son..... my innocent son even go to approach her and initiate a conversation about planet, and there you are...she said, "I can't understand him, what did he said?" ask us three times while my friendly son tell him 3 times.but she never address directly to him, instead, he is invisible to her.....while he speaks perfect English and talking to her. Then, that lady ask us instead. I just cannot stand her anymore after all that and told her that we felt very welcome in previous event before but I cannot say the same this time....and we left. As parent, we always teach our child to behave and take good care of things, especially coming from a strict Asian family. However, too bad we were not invited because we are NOT white and NOT OLD enough? This older white female has no heart and it's a shame that she is part of this society. She totally failed our next generation to promote understanding our universe and the place we ALL SHARED called earth. Next time if she wants to hogged up the telescope which owed by the city which are owned and maintain by our hard earned tax dollar, she can simply close the door and put a sign there "Public place for private use only, we screen all patrons, no kids, no astro-idot or look-alike, no decent human esepcially under the age of ten or think like one, THANKYOU for your co-operation we only respect smart looking rich looking white folks here" read more
