Went in deciding what I wanted to get so I let a couple of people ahead of me. I guess the lady in front of me was having trouble deciding between the spicy and cheddar so she kept coming in and out. Staff tried to give me the lady in front's order that was returned by her since she came back and I guess we ordered the same thing but I was not going to have that. I had Garrett's the last time I was in Chicago ( about 7 years ago) and forgot what it was like so came back to try it again and see if it was worth the hype lol I expected a bigger variety of options to choose from, I think I only saw like 5 of them. I sampled the spicy cheesecorn and was not a fan but I also tried the almond caramel crisp and that was my fave! I ended up getting one small Almond Caramel Crisp and I tried the Garrett mix. The small Almond was about $6.99 and the small Garrett mix was $5.99. Not too bad for "gourmet" popcorn. Now I will say that cheesy popcorn in my Garrett mix was sooo stale! I was skeptical about it too (about the freshness) but I gave it the benefit of the doubt but I was very disappointed with that. If it was fresh it would be much better. I love Garrett's and love that this location on Jackson is around the corner from my daughter's dorm. I stop there almost every time I go see her, and I'm actually headed there today to pick up holiday gifts for my team at work. They have numerous locations in downtown too and in the airport so tourists get to indulge as well. I say indulge because once I start eating it I can't stop! It's very addictive. I've been buying popcorn since the early 70's in Chicago. They use to have movie theaters in the Loop and we would sneak Garrett's in every time. I haven't lived in Chicago since '98 but I still visit and one of my must have is Garrett. I was in Chicago last month and got Garrett from Midway. May I say I would never do that again. It was the nastiest greasy popcorn ever. I've purchased from this location since it was added to Midway. I had a large group travel with me from California to Israel. We had a layover and I convinced 60 people to buy popcorn. Well, I made a large order online from Garrett and from Taste of Chicago as well to bless the pastors at my church for Pastor's Appreciation Month. Need I to say that half of the order was received and the other half didn't even have a tracking ticket as the box is not here. I contacted Garrett this morning and had a wonderful rep to attempt to assist me but when company take all the control from line staff and will not give you a manager but only thru creating a ticket and hoping someone calls you. The solution given was talk with the shipping company (that I did not choose), wait for research for a perishable item (joke), cancel or possibly sending another order that would not arrive til next Thursday and a $15 credit on another order. Whatever manager that gave the rep these solutions was very insulting. I understand that you guys could not reship the popcorn next day air because it was the weekend but you wouldn't over Monday. I fill you guys dropped the ball on an opportunity to work with a customer who does believe in loyalty. I felt the taste of the popcorn I had last month was me and not Garrett, hence the reason for giving another try. This particular location is right on Jackson and close to State St. It's right on the corner next to the Dunkins and when you walk in, you can smell the butteriness wafting in the air. It's a pretty small store and there was about 5 different flavors. I decided to go with the mix as that was what was recommended to me by the cashier. So Garrett's headquarters replied to my previous comment, saying that I could call Garrett's main line (the only published phone #) to have "all of my questions answered." INCORRECT. The phone number provided keeps regular business hours (closes at 5pm), while the store I ordered from closes at 9pm. I had placed an on-line order for two family sized buckets - one of Chicago Mix and one of buttered popcorn. I picked it up at the store at around 8pm (AFTER THE BUSINESS HOURS OF THE PUBLISHED PHONE NUMBER) and brought it back home. When I got home I opened them up, and realized they were both Chicago mixes. We were leaving very early the next morning to go out of town, and bringing the popcorn with us as a gift to family members. SO MY ISSUE COULD NOT WAIT UNTIL REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS RESUMED THE NEXT DAY AND SOMEONE AT HEADQUARTERS WOULD PICK-UP THE PHONE. I needed to speak with THAT PARTICULAR STORE THAT VERY SAME NIGHT to see if I brought the mistake tin of the Chicago mix back in, if they would exchange it for what I had originally ordered. I ended up just keeping the mistake tin, because we live on the north side of the city, and I didn't want to chance driving all the way back downtown just to get to the store and have them possibly refuse the exchange or charge me for a new one, etc. Without actually being able to TALK TO AN EMPLOYEE WHEN I NEEDED TO, I felt stuck and as if I didn't have any options. So please do not tell me that the corporate phone number will be able to handled "any questions" that I have, because at that late hour, I needed to speak with that particular store, which was STILL OPEN, but the corporate phone number was closed. If you are going to shut down your corporate phone number at 5pm, then PLEASE publish the individual phone numbers to each store, so customers can still get real time assistance during the store's business hours. read more

What's not to love? Fluffy delicious popped kernels of plain or flavored gourmet goodness. Something for everyone. We chose the uber cheesey, which you need gloves for. Not because they stain but you won't stop eating them so they STAY sullied. The Caramel and Caramel Nut mixes were our take homes too. The nuts are either pecans or cashews. We did a mix of both then one plain bag. Honestly, we should've bought tubs, as most of the kernel delights were gone long before we hit the airplane home. Definitely a Chi-town MUST! read more

Yes....there is no visit to Chicago without a stop by Garrett's popcorn. I was in town a few weeks ago and this store location was nearby, so couldn't resist picking up some of their delicious popcorn. It's in the downtown area so street parking can be tricky. There was plenty of nearby parking garages, so I recommend parking and walking to it as well as nearby attractions. The facility was super clean and well maintained to the highest standards. The staff was very friendly and professional. This location was following the COVID-19 pandemic precautions to the T. Overall my experience was excellent and of course I'll be back when I'm town again. I would highly recommend this store to local people or tourists that maybe just in town visiting. read more

Located near a DuPaul satalitte campus downtown. This is the spot to get your popcorn fix. They have a few flavors to choose from. I had a hard time deciding what i wanted, so I went with 3 of them; cheese, choclate, and pecan. You can get you popcorn in a tin or in small, medium or large sizes. Parking sucks around here, but remember, this is downtown Chicago. There are many college students and homeless in the area. Do not be surprised if you get solicited for food and/or money while you are in the store or just outside. I got hit up twice. The staff here was very friendly and accommodating. I may have been no more than a toddler the first time that I ate a popcorn treat at Garrett's on State Street in downtown Chicago. Even back then, before it started prepackaging its delicious wares and selling them nationwide, the Garret Popcorn shop was locally famous. Garrett's (when I was a child in the mid-to-late 1960s) was Located between "Tad's Steakhouse" (a 'fast-food' steak grill meant for people working in The Downtown "Loop" during their 50 minute lunch-hour) and the glorious old "State-Lake" movie palace (once a Vaudeville theater). The Garret Popcorn Shop was a deep and narrow store with a line of customers stretching out the door and down the block - especially between 5PM & 6PM when most people in the Loop got off of work. Garrett's was the best place in Chicago's downtown for a pre-dinner "pick-me-up" snack to eat on the Bus, "EL" (elevated train), or Subway while heading home. It was also an inexpensive treat for the whole family (and a great bribe for the kids to do their homework). Otherwise, if it was just you and your spouse the "bring-home" treat was sometimes a box of chocolates from "See's Candies" around the corner, a bottle of imported wine from "Stop & Shop" (Chicago's version of London's famous gourmet store, Harrod's), or a dozen Roses from one of the Loop's many corner flower stalls or aromatic newspaper stands. But as I said before, Garrett's was almost always the best place (and the most appreciated place) to procure an after-work treat for all relationships, economic classes, genders, and ages. In other words, getting somebody something from Garrett's was a sure-thing. My mother probably started pushing me through the long line at Garrett's while I was still in a stroller. She was a model and an actress, and one of her bread-&-butter gigs was as the hostess-model for the thin crust pizza company that held the "Pi-Za" conssetion-booth at the huge Woolworths store a few blocks away. So I got a free pizza slice for breakfast, a nice Tad's steak for lunch, more free pizza slices for afternoon snacks, and a Garrett's popcorn treat right after my mom's workday was finished. It became quite the tasty habit - and I slowly grew the waistline to prove it. In those early days the only way to get a Garrett's product was to wait in line until you were able to push your way up to the long glass-enclosed popcorn counter where numerous original popcorn creations were made fresh by a host of servers who basically made fresh popped popcorn all day long. That tiny store smelled so good it made my mouth water. My favorite Garrett creations were the oversized popcorn balls (stuck together with either melted clear-white sugar, or rich melted dark-brown sugar, or on holidays in clear melted sugar with either green or red food coloring in it). My mother's favorite creation was the warm, fluffy, salty, cheesy popcorn with the bright orange cheddar powder coating it. Sometimes we would compromise by getting a mix of the cheddar popcorn and the Carmel-Corn (which was warm, sweet, rich, brown, and buttery). To this day that mix is still my favorite. Almost nobody, including my mother and I ever got the regular popcorn with just butter and salt. That special taste was most definitely saved - for a treat at The Movies. But I have been a lifelong customer. It is a delicious product, even to this day. read more

Delicious fresh popped popcorn! Visited here on a Monday afternoon. There were three employees behind the counter and only my sis and I in the shop. Service was fast. Haha! The store was well organized, well decorated, and fun. There were 5 choices on the menu- Garrett Mix, Cheesecorn, Carmelcrisp), Buttery/Plain, and Nut Carmelcrisp. Sizes available in bags were small, medium, large, and jumbo. There were two tin sizes. Free samples were available. We walked out with a large bag of Garret Mix (a combination of Cheesecorn and Carmelcrisp). I loved how they bagged the popcorn in a wax bag, then in a cute colorful paper bag, followed by a small plastic shopping tote. The popcorn was fresh and tasty. Prices were reasonable. I love popcorn! And I was on a mission to try all popular Chicago foods when I was visiting. I got the cheddar and caramel corn mix and it was AMAZING! Two flavors I would've never mixed together on my own, but it was great. The salty and sweet contrast was perfect. The cheese popcorn was very cheesy and full of flavor. The caramel was buttery sweet with a crunchy exterior. It was embarrassing how fast I polished off a huge bag - but it was 100% worth it. I recommend going early. We went right when they opened and there was a small line. The worker was all by herself, too - so I think they're short staffed. Be prepared to be patient and know that it's worth it! read more
