I visited this location twice during my trip to Chicago, and both visits were great. The employees were friendly, welcoming, and happy to answer questions. The first visit the popcorn was good but seemed to lack freshness as it began to taste stale within 24 hours. I'm hoping the second batch that I purchased to take home is better. I also like that the photo op fits the area being in the theatre district. Free samples are available upon request, which gave me the chance to try the spicy cheese flavor. It had a nice kick and was definitely worth sampling. Overall, this is a nice quick location to grab popcorn. read more

I don't usually get to this Garrett's Popcorn location since I'm not usually in this area of the Loop. But it's really convenient when leaving the theatre! You aren't supposed to take the popcorn into the theaters (it's right next door to the Nederlander, and around the corner from the Goodman) so best to purchase it afterward, if they're open. Like all locations, they sell standard Garrett's products and the popcorn is yummy. They have a little spot where you can take photos if you're an especially proud Garrett's fan. No parking since it's smack dab in the middle of the Loop, but it's just off the Lake el. read more

The ladies at this location weren't super friendly on Sunday night. We weren't greeted when we walked in and they weren't very helpful or accommodating to the customers in front of us. We came in wanting kettle corn and the lady in front of us asked for some, but the display case was barely empty. One of the workers went back and grabbed 2 small buckets to "fill" the case and said, "that's all we got after this." Oh okay. Lol There's plenty of Garrett's around. Literally every couple blocks there's a Garrett's so we walked a little further for (hopefully) better service and kettle corn. read more

I know it's a tradition and most Chicago people will say it's something you have to do. It's popcorn people. I know it's cheese popcorn and a mix or caramel popcorn and they mix it up and shake it up so you get a little of each in every handful. I mean for me it's a one time shot. It definitely is something to do and something to experience. For me it is a little expensive and you are paying the tourist and we are a historical fixture tax. There is nothing to see the shops are all small and it's popcorn. I mean they are popping corn and putting it into the bins where they are bagging and selling. Seeing that this location lacks in customer service- it comes up one star short. Went in on a Sunday evening and upon arriving to the front of the line I was told that the caramel corn was a 15 minute wait (they were still making it). I said okay, could I pay for it now and return to pick it up? Their reply; "We can't do that". (Why ???) they say "it's first come first serve " My reply; "I'm here now!".... Suggestion number 2- I asked if I could wait in the store until the popcorn was ready? Their reply; "we can't do that". (Again, why???) are we seeing a running theme here? I like popcorn and every time I'm in Chicago I try to stop by Garrett's to get some for the road. On a recent trip to the city we passed by this shop as we were walking back to our hotel from dinner. We caught them just before closing, which was evident by the look of the popcorn cases and by the employees' attitudes. A few of us wanted tins to carry on the plane but we were told that there wasn't enough of the Chicago mix - cheddar and caramel - left for two orders. There appeared to us to be more than enough actually and after mine was filled, the employees realized this. I just so happened to be with family a few days after my Chicago trip so we opened the tin and dug in. The sweet caramel and savory cheese hits all the right notes for me every time. The caramel has a great crunch and sweetness. The cheese is soft and works well. Either would get boring, but the combination is a delight. Great value around $5 for a small, which is still a healthy portion for two people; my wife and I ended up making two separate snacks out of it. read more

3.5 stars but minus .5 for "friendliness." Great popcorn - indifferent service. We dropped in as the flyer that came with our bus tour - that came with our City Pass - offered a free sample. Since we had 2 passes, we received 2 samples of the house blend. The house blend is cheddar and caramel which is a great combo. The samples were a good size - think sandwich bag - so decent for free. We also purchased a large to take home but a couple of nights in a hotel room didn't really allow for survival. By the time we got home, the staleness has started so eat soon or plan to store in an airtight container. They offer samples but employees seemed disinterested in any kind of customer service so I subtracted half a star for this location. read more

There was a bit of a line, but it wasn't too bad. Probably waited about 10-15 minutes. Since we were going to be in Chicago for another couple of days, I just got a medium CheeseCorn ($5.80). I know their Garrett Mix: caramelcrisp & cheesecorn is popular, but I'm not a huge fan of sweet and savory together. That cheesecorn though. Cheesy, buttery, and so rich! I love it! We actually finished the whole bag before we headed back home, so I bought more at another location the next day. This location is convenient due to the area. Garrett Popcorn is straight up crack. I never thought I'd love a popcorn so much. Like, I like cheddar and/or caramel popcorn but this is a whole nother story. This is CRACK. The popcorn is literally the best caramel and cheddar popcorn I've ever had. They taste best together with an equal ratio per handful of both. The popcorn is pretty expensive (I just ordered a big tub without looking at the price and then was surprised when I had to pay $60 - whoops!) but it's so good it's worth it. I literally still have popcorn at home. I posted about it in my instagram story and my friend was skeptical - how could popcorn be that good? Then she came over and couldn't stop eating it and recognized that yet again, it is crack. Go here and become an addict. read more

Garrett's is a must try if you're visiting Chicago. Before my visit, I've read about this place and how their popcorn make great souvenirs to bring home too. This was my second visit to Garrett's since arriving and I was back to pick up some freshly made popcorn to bring home. My favorite was the caramel mix. While I'm not usually a fan of caramel in general, this was really good. The Garrett mix of the cheddar and caramel is popular but I couldn't get on board with the salty and sweet combination. They offer other flavors like cheddar cheese, caramel and almond, caramel and cashew, and butter popcorn. They even had a a caramel and white chocolate mix for a limited amount of time too. The white chocolate and caramel and almond were just not as good as the caramel by itself. Skip the butter flavor too. That one was the least impressive. This location is their most popular location and they're constantly making fresh batches of popcorn throughout the day. We ended up buying two of the one gallon buckets of just the caramel to bring home. It's that addicting. read more

The Chicago mix is the perfect balance if sweet and salty, and is so gosh darn addicting. They do include some napkins in the bag, but it's probably a good idea to grab some more because the cheese can get a little messy and greasy. For $7 a medium size is pretty big. As a temporary transplant to Chicago, all I hear is "Garretts, Garretts, Garretts," so, here I am. This is my second Garretts experience, both being at this location after a movie across the street. To make a long rant short, I get that working a job like this past your 20's is probably super sucky, but... either fake your enthusiasm or apply to be a door greeter at WalMart. I came by specifically for the 'Chicago Mix' deal with the additional bag of a flavor-- but yall are out of Caramel. Fine-- give me the caramel with the peanuts-- just go easy on the nuts. Simple enough, right? Except, apparently they "simply cannot do that" ... even though they are out of plain caramel. And all of the substitution options I am allergic to. So. Because yall are out of plain caramel, I have to pay a premium when yall have a special-- that you cannot fulfill, to no fault of my own. AND then you have an attitude about it??? Ma'am. MA'AM. I acknowledge that this is a "fat" rant lol let me have this. I am not supposed to even be eating sweets right now so, after fighting traffic and illegally parking for like 25 minutes, waiting for my savory mix of cheesy caramel popped corn, I am quite upset that a simple modification to how 30 pieces of popcorn are scooped out the bin couldn't be made. read more

There was a line outside the shop with about half an hour remaining before closing. An employee came out and announced they were completely out of cheesecorn. With that many customers remaining, surely they could have popped more and sold it. We really wanted the Garrett's mix, so we inquired where another shop was located and only had to walk about two blocks to another location. When we arrived, THAT shop was out of caramel and sold us what they had left: one small bag of cheesecorn.
