Whenever I have traveled through the Chicago airports, I have always been on the lookout for Garrett Popcorn Shops so that I could get some amazing popcorn as I had a layover in Chicago. This time, I was actually spending several days in Chicago, so it was only natural for my friend and me to swing by the first Garrett Popcorn Shop we found near our hotel to buy gifts for people at home. We stopped by the 173 N Michigan Avenue location, and there was no line at first (though there was when we were leaving). We saw a whole bunch of options from the Chicago-style Garrett Mix (caramel and cheddar) to Caramel Crisp, Cheese Corn, Almond Caramel Crisp, and Pecan Caramel Crisp. We decided it only made sense to get the Chicago-style Garrett Mix for everyone. The service was quick, and the employee helping us was helpful and walked us through the best deals to get the most items. We ended up getting $5 off (due to how much we ordered) plus got an additional discount due to the number we ordered, too. We chose tins for the ease of packing and travel, which is considered a part of the "Build Your Bundle" promotion. The hours at this location are generally 10 AM to 7 PM though that is subject to change. Like at many other stores, there were also options for Frango Chocolate mixed in or using the app or website for Skip the Line & Order Ahead options. They also provide for meetings and events. If you sign up on their website for their newsletter, you can earn $10 in savings. Since 1949, they have been creating special experiences for customers. Garrett's always gets me with the smell before I even walk in. The popcorn is fresh and honestly worth the hype. It's also the season for their hot chocolate popcorn which has chocolate covered caramel pieces, and I recommend it. Just know the wait can get a little long. There was only one person working the counter when I went, and since every bag and tin is scooped to order, it definitely slows things down. Allow me to paint a meme for you. Kids are at a movie theater asking their mom if they can get popcorn. Mom says "no, we have popcorn at home." The next panel, popcorn at home is the microwave stuff, and not the fancy kind, either! This is how I feel about Garrett... in three words: "accept no substitutes." All the others are "popcorn at home." While I appreciate Garrett is a chain, whatever they're supposed to be doing, this location does it well! The cheese is properly cheesy, and the caramel is sweet with a little crispness. Both tastes fresh and had just the right amount of give. Prices are a little high compared to bags at the grocery store, but just like with movie theater popcorn, it's not the same. Thus, we are left with a food I call "dangerous." Garrett's is a regular stop, almost obligatory, when visiting Chicago. However, the shoppe on Michigan is by far my favorite. The team members are always lively and welcoming as is the atmosphere! On my most recent visit they had the spicy cheese popcorn for the summer season. I asked if I could have the "Chicago Mix" but with the spicy cheese instead of the regular cheese popcorn. I love Garrett's popcorn and always grab some of the mixed popcorn whenever I'm in the area. The store wasn't too busy in a weekday afternoon which might explain why the popcorn we got was stale. I don't know how old it was but it didn't taste good. Next time, I recommend asking for a sample first to make sure it is not stale before you get it. read more

The cheesecorn left my hands orange and cheesy... the caramel popcorn had so much it sometimes stuck to my teeth... well the batch I got recently had none of these characteristics... apparently they are coating the popcorn with " A LOT" less toppings. read more

I didn't get a picture because I started eating as soon as I got the bag. We waited in line for over an hour. They ran out of popcorn twice while we were in line. HOWEVER, it was worth the wait (I don't say that about a lot of places). I got the Chicago mix. It is cheddar and caramel mixed.
