The atmosphere is perfectly suited to the restaurant's name--comfortable, welcoming, and reminiscent of a classic steakhouse. The "Rat Pack" music playing in the background added just the right touch to the nostalgic ambiance. We both ordered the Smoked Top Round French Dip Sandwich, featuring caramelized onions, provolone, black garlic aioli, and au jus on a hoagie roll. Both sandwiches were delicious! The house-made truffle Parmesan fries were among the best I've ever had, and the chopped side salad was equally impressive, especially with its real Roquefort blue cheese dressing. For dessert, we shared raisin bread pudding topped with caramel and chocolate sauces and vanilla ice cream--a delicious way to finish a wonderful meal. Dale's only serves breakfast and lunch and then they shut down early. They do not do dinner apparently. It seems they serve breakfast all day along with some lunch options. We decided to eat lunch because we got there a little bit after noon. The special of the day was sloppy Joe's. I decided to have a pork tenderloin sandwich with fries and coleslaw and my guest decided to get the sloppy Joe's special with fries. On a 10 scale, the coleslaw was a seven, the tenderloin sandwich was a nine, and the fries were an eight. The sloppy joe was a six. I think the reason why the sloppy Joe didn't rank higher is because it was just dry loose seasoned hamburger meat. It didn't have any sauce in it whatsoever to hold it together. It was more like a loose meat sandwich or a taco burger. Those sandwiches are generally drier and crumbly in texture. I also like the option of having some cheddar cheese with a sloppy joe, or any similar hamburger type of sandwich. I would definitely consider coming again and trying something different. I noticed they had some comfort food classics on their menu like ex: chicken and dumplings and meatloaf. I hear they're usually pretty busy and packed when it comes to their breakfast crowd. This restaurant is doing things the right way from what I can tell at this point. The bathroom was average in cleanliness, presentation/appearance. I stand by giving them a strong 4 star rating for them which stays on course with their already established 4 star rating.

It's like they just want customers to go away on a weekend night. Weird. Many places stay open based on crowds. The next change we ordered was the duck breast - Maple Leaf Farms duck (the best!). Chef perfectly cooked it to a medium-rare temperature and served it on a roasted carrot purée with pickled tomatillos and hazelnuts. Best duck I have enjoyed in quite a while. My spouse ordered the pan seared cod on a white bean ragout (most similar to a cassoulet) with kale. Chef told us he would have used a more interesting fish than cod, but nothing was available. Nevertheless, the dish was outstanding, especially the cassoulet. I should mention that there is a new pork presentation on the menu, pork Milanese. We happened to have treated two German ladies to that dish, among others, and they literally licked their plates clean! Of course, the crispy asparagus is not new, but it is a seasonal favorite. Finally, keeping with the seasonal theme, there was a persimmon sorbetto. Having grown up with Virginia (or American) persimmons, we really looked forward to this dish. To be sure, it was a different take on persimmons than the puddings my grandmother, mother and spouse make, but it captured the persimmons nicely. One of the features of this restaurant we really appreciate is that I have a stupid allergy to a common spice and Chef Nick does his level best to work around it. Either he suggests different dishes or, in our case, he changed the breading on the delicata squash rings to remove the offending spice. We love the atmosphere and the service is always spot on.
