Visited Garde East during a trip to Martha's Vineyard. It was a casual vibe with a great view. However, the menu was limited at the time, which was disappointing. Since my friends and I expected more offerings, we only had drinks, oysters, and salads. It wasn't too busy when we visited so the service was fine. 3.5 stars over all - go for the view and ambiance. Don't expect exceptional food or service. To be fair the service staff was extremely nice but just inattentive. Our waitress forgot to tell us the special. We overheard another waiter explaining the specials and my husband was quite upset because he would have ordered it. The actual food was not bad just not exceptional (it's kind of expensive but that's expected for the area and the location on the water). Once we got there I realized there is a lot on the menu you can't eat if you can't eat raw/undercooked fish. We got a few second courses to share - the goat cheese and carrots, lobster burrata, and beet gnocchi. Overall they were all good - felt clean and fresh. We got the halibut to share as well and the mushroom and garlic something side (recommended by our waitress). The sides were really good! Halibut was okay. Our water was not refilled until we asked. The first course dishes were not cleared until the next course came. Felt a little forgotten. But anyway can't regret the dinner cause the view was phenomenal. read more

My sister and I visited Martha's Vineyard in August and had a lovely stay in Tisbury. Our first evening we wanted to walk to dinner, and after a quick search online found Garde East. The food looked pretty and they have a lot of fresh ingredients on the menu, which we always look for. We were able to snag a bar seat in the upper area, which was nice. It was getting dark by the time we dined, although I'm sure the view is lovely! For drinks, I asked the bartender if he could whip up a French 75, and I have to say it was one of the best French 75s I've had! Deliciously well-balanced. I would highly recommend if you enjoy a refreshing, bubbly cocktail. My sister and I both went with the vegetarian Farro Risotto for dinner, which includes farro (a grain), asparagus, English peas, mushrooms, tomato confit, and fried leeks. My goodness, so much flavor! And one of the tastiest risottos I've had. Even if you're not vegetarian, I'd highly recommend. I wanted to treat myself so I ended up ordering the Chocolate Cake as well. This dessert is comprised of ganache, raspberry gastrique, and hazelnut mousse. Nothing extraordinary but I did enjoy it nonetheless. Service was good and I enjoyed the ambiance. Prices were on par for the location. Overall, a wonderful experience! read more

No idea why yelp only shows 3.5 stars?! This venue is spectacular and the Staff ALL went above+beyond with courtesy, professionalism, and even escorting up and down the stairs. 3.5 stars is about right. Rounding down because there wasn't anything thrilling here, and the prices may lead one to believe that what's offered is particularly notable. Just solid but underwhelming, overpriced eats typical of the Martha's Vineyard dining scene. Three seems a little bit harsh because there was also nothing particularly negative about our experience here and the ambiance was delightful, so please just read this review in full and don't look at the star count and move on. The views and vibe are superb, the service is solid (someone must've read all of those reviews bashing the service recently) and the food is generally light, fresh and healthy. I do not regret dining here but there's not much creativity going on. Solid portions but muted flavors. But the photos we got out on the porch were great for the 'gram. Came here at 7pm on 4th of July for my sister's birthday. We were originally a party of four but added on two more people a few weeks prior to arriving in Martha's Vineyard, so they were initially going to seat us at two separate tables. Thankfully, we called day-of and they said they could accommodate a table for six. We sat in what seems to be the overflow space: right next to the main restaurant and up a flight of stairs, there's a second floor dining space complete with a covered deck when the weather is nice. I was a bit concerned about being a forgotten child, especially after reading some of the reviews about the service, but thankfully everything was prompt. And the sunset views were wonderful. We started with a round of cocktails: nothing fancy, just the classics. I went with the Summer Manhattan (Rye Whiskey, Sherry, Fig, Cascara Cherry) which hit the spot. The wine selection here is also decent -- I enjoyed the sparkling rosé that my sister was comped but the hit of the night was the Chenin Blanc. Food-wise, the emphasis here is on seafood, as it should be. My fiancé and I split mostly smaller plates, with one main thrown in there. We sampled a good amount of the menu between the six of us. The most advertised dish was the Lobster Thermidor, coming in at just below 50 bucks. My dad ordered it and was not impressed. The preparations looked exciting on paper so it was definitely a letdown in some respects. Much of it bland and uninspired. But there's definitely potential. Eats, below: Tuna Crudo w/ Radish, Shallots, Yuzu, Soy: B+ A solid start, very fresh with muted flavors. Radish is always a good go-to with a crudo, and the yuzu also went nicely with the dish. A subtle palette but nothing too overpowering should be added to a crudo/tartare-style plate. Olive Oil Poached Shrimp w/ Tomato Tartare, Horseradish: C+/B- Meh. Could have done without this. Very well-presented shrimp cocktail. The horseradish addition was minimal at best -- more could have added more character to the plate. Watermelon w/ Great Hill Bleu, Fennel, Onion: A The highlight for everyone who ordered it. Fresh and refreshing and so tasty. I love a good watermelon and feta salad but the bleu cheese was a great twist. Local Bass w/ Crisp Skin, Summer Vegetables, Pinot Noir Gastrique: B- The description jumped off the page to me but the fish was just okay. Underseasoned and the gastrique didn't really come through. I ate more of the veggies than I did of the fish, when what we paid for was obviously the protein. But the skin was crispy, as advertised. Belgian Endive w/ Blue Crab, Radish, Shallot: B/B+ This oddly came well after our main, as we were starting to wind down for the evening, but it was still pretty good, though not aesthetically pleasing. Radish and shallots made sense for the crudo but overall, I found the flavors too muted here. Still, fresh ingredients and enjoying some lump crab is always a treat. read more

We were on the Vineyard for the very first time! Some locals recommended Garde East for us and they were SPOT ON! We loved every second we were there, the hospitality from the host, the general manager Madeline and all her team, our server Ari who is charming and efficient. Food was incredible thank you chef! I'm not sure how I've missed this gem for the last 7 years! Went to Garde East for lunch today and from Start to finish it was fantastic. Hostess was nice. Our table on the deck with waterfront views was hot and sunny- but we chose to sit there, we grabbed our sunglasses and it was delightful! Our waitress Eradona (Dona) was wonderful! Hard working, knew her stuff and was nice to chat with! Service was A+. Parking was a non issue! They have a lot across the street (too). Food was delicious! Price was expected. We chose Garde East for our last dinner on the island, and as a whole the experience was great. We had stellar service up until we were finishing up our dinner and wanted dessert. Our waitress got stuck accommodating some other tables and their needs, and as a result we had to wait a while for her to tell us the few dessert choices and then to actually get the dessert. It wasn't completely her fault, but when you pay for these dinners, we were hoping the service would be great throughout. However, I did think it was one of the best dinners we had on Martha's Vineyard, so there's that. We started off with a mojito for me and a wine for the hubby. We had a first and second course of the house bread and the chef's selected charcuterie. The bread surprised us with how much there actually was, and how good the honey butter was. The cheeses on the charcuterie included I think Montenegro? And also a very mild blue cheese which even the hubby, who hates blue cheese, couldn't get enough. The meats were also chosen well, and went well with the cheeses and the honey included. Our dinners came out as we were finishing our apps up, and the hubby's steak was huge! As I'm sure you can see from the pic. He liked it a lot, but it was a New York strip, not as fancy as other beef dishes he had on the trip. I had roasted chicken that was so moist, served with fingerling potatoes, side salad, and a delicious lemon blanc sauce. The chicken literally fell of the bone and some of the best roasted chicken I have ever had. For dessert, I had key lime pie, which was deconstructed, so that was fun. Nice and tangy, perfect for a summer night. The hubby had tiramisu, which he also enjoyed. Last week we had the best appetizers, drinks, and ambience while watching the sun set over the harbor in Vineyard Haven. We had eaten a late lunch earlier and were looking for something light, as well as a quiet and relaxing spot near the water (that was following COVID protocols), and we found it! The oysters were delicious and served cold over ice so you could really taste the flavors. The cheese board we ordered was presented perfectly and the variety of cheeses on the platter was excellent. Next we had multiple cocktails inclusive of margaritas, local beers, Jameson, and finally, espresso martinis. Only one word to describe the mixed cocktails...YUM! We interacted directly with Patrick and Christie and they were wonderful. It seems like they were working with limited staff, as they were constantly catering to us and the other guests, but it never impacted our service and we didn't have to wait more than a couple minutes for drinks and additional appetizers. The staff was adhering to all COVID protocols and social distancing guidelines, which was important to all of us but especially because one of the people at our table is a nurse and has been working on the front line during this pandemic. A hidden gem in Vineyard Haven; Garde East treats its patrons with a fantastic view of the tranquil bay from their top deck while enjoying classic New England seafood. For a preamble, we tried the clam chowder; a savoury treat that set the tone perfectly for our main course. We considered the Chef's tasting menu but, instead, landed on the Lobster Bake. The presentation was on point, the lobster & shellfish was flavourful and perfectly juxtaposed with the linguica, potatoes, and corn. We rounded the evening out sharing the key lime pie and raspberry sorbet. My wife and I were on holiday at MV to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Prior to arriving my wife made reservations with someone over the phone a week before arriving. Reservations for brunch at 11am with deck seating overlooking the harbour. We arrive at 10:30am and so we set outside until it was 11am. Upon entering and saying we have a reservation for brunch at 11am we were told that they serve brunch at 12pm. And when asked should we not had been informed all we got was a shrug of his shoulders. No apology. No "sorry for the inconvenience or even we will comp you with something". Nothing !! Pathetic behaviour. Totally unprofessional and unwilling to accommodate us. Advice to anyone thinking about dining here, don't waste your time. If you want to experience good service and good food try the Red Dog Tavern just a short walk away !! read more

For the main course, my husband had the Pasta al Vongole which included Littleneck Clams, Cream of Chablis, Shallots, & Chives. There were only 4 clams and he felt there should have been more. On a gorgeous day in summer we planned to sit on the deck with a water view, but there was no shade. I must say that I have rarely seen such an in appealing menu. I didn't know what the food was and the waitress was not too sure either. The lobster rolls were small and my friend said they were not very good. Another friend did not expect to have the tuna sandwich be sushi style. The salad was good but there could not have been more than a cup of it. Glad to have found a reservation for a Wednesday night on MV. Limited menu which I understand given continued COVID-19 impacts. Food flavors were acceptable but not amazing. My problem was the price. Ordered the sea scallops for $48. The entree was only three lonely scallops. Seriously, each scallop cost $16 which is outrageous. Wife ordered the bass for $45 which was a more reasonable serving but still a minimal size. I would not return and feel like I was ripped off. read more

I decided to try a new restaurant and treat myself to a nice dinner at Garde East, and what a wonderful evening it was! As a solo diner, I brought a book to read while I ate my meal, but there was no need for that! I was pleasantly welcomed with great conversations, a lot of laughs, and feeling appreciated and wanted - which is not always the case as a party of one. I enjoyed the halibut crudo, lobster cavatelli, and the lemon tart this evening. All were outstanding and I would definitely recommend. Espresso was also lovely, thanks to Ardie's attentiveness on refills. While the food was absolutely wonderful, the customer service was the highlight of my evening. This is hands down the most welcome I have ever felt in a restaurant, whether dining alone, on a date, or with a group of friends or family. The staff was so welcoming, and entertained me the whole evening. Mike, a very charismatic and seasoned server, educated me on the menu and was a pleasure to be around. Managers Madeline and Phoebe often came to check up on me, which is not common when eating alone. Meg the bartender and I had many laughs, and everyone else who walked past my bar seat checked in with me as well. From observing the extremely busy evening and the staff working together, I could tell this staff respects one another and act as a whole, which is refreshing to see, as I also work in the service industry. If you are visiting Martha's Vineyard for your first time or are a frequent island goer, you should make it a point to head over to Garde East, whether it's for docktails on their beautiful beach front or dinner with the best view on the island. The halibut was alright, I've had better and the sauce was too creamy / tasted like it belonged on pasta, the fried mushrooms on top were an interesting yet tasty touch. Horrible experience! Service was terrible. We sat for over 15 mins , were intentionally ignored. Had to ask for water and menus. Selected the tasting course for 120$ pp portions were extremely small. Overpriced. Ordered a bottle of wine that I had to remind the waiter to bring 2x. It finally came after the second course. I had to continually ask for water throughout the meal. The table next to us was treated as royalty (clearly they knew a staff member). They were seated well after us and left way before. The treatment was obvious. I really wanted to like this restaurant. We were visiting Martha's Vineyard for the first time from Arizona. Most of our family is from Connecticut, so we thought this would be a great trip. We originally wanted to check out Port Hunter in Edgartown. They don't take reservations and when we arrived they told me they were not accepting any more names on the wait list. No restaurant in Edgartown would seat a party of seven at any kind of reasonable hour. As a result, we started calling restaurants in Vineyard Haven. Garde East said they could seat us at 8:15 which worked for us. We arrived a little early and were ask to wait in a nice courtyard seating area. As we waited, I noticed that the restaurant also seemed to be serving a yacht club next door. A few minutes later, a young woman appeared and said she would seat us. But instead of seating us in the restaurant, she took us up to the dining area of the yacht club. There was a significant difference between the dining room of the restaurant and the dining area of the yacht club. The restaurant was a white tablecloth dining room, warm and well lit. The yacht club was more like a pub. We were seated near the bar, in a poorly lit and chilly room wide open to the terrace outside. My wife and her mother were cold, despite being as far away from the door as they could get. In the interest of keeping the review to a reasonable length, I will say that the food was well prepared and flavorful. My halibut was tender and delicious. My wife enjoyed her seafood spaghetti and my uncle loved his pork dish. Everything was great food wise. The service was friendly but a little on the slow side as they were very busy. My only suggestion is that the restaurant should have asked if we were ok with the dining area switch. Frankly, we would have been happy to wait a little bit longer to have not been in a cold, dark place to have dinner. Dinner for seven with a couple of cocktails and wine was over $100 per person. For those prices, I expect a much better overall dining experience. Would we return? Perhaps...but I would have to consider other choices. Five star food but only a 3 star dining experience. We expected better - this was the real low point of our trip. We were a party of four friends hoping for a celebratory lunch while on vacation. The service was rude, sloppy, and highly unprofessional. It really killed the experience for us. For example, our server could not answer basic questions about the menu and repeatedly sloshed wine on our table while pouring our wine. At times, he actually sat at an empty dining table while scrolling on his phone and within our line of sight. We found this extremely awkward and unprofessional, particularly because the dining room was basically empty. We also found the food underwhelming. Two of us ordered the clam pasta, which was basically just a few steamed clams on unseasoned noodles (albeit the fresh pasta itself was good). It desperately needed salt and a sauce. One of us enjoyed the lobster roll, but it was no better than one from a local fast food place (and was significantly more expensive). The fish and chips was the favorite dish at the table, but again, we expected more from a higher end restaurant like Garde East. read more

This place is absolutely phenomenal - from the divine cooking to the elegant setting to the sincere and understated service. The chef used to work at Le Bernadine, and the dishes reflect that. I highly recommend the beet gnocchi, the octopus, the catch of the day, the sashimi trio, the foie gras, and most of all, the chestnut cake (I'd go back just for this). Cannot recommend this place more when you are in Martha's Vineyard. read more
