Came here in college, that was awhile ago! Great food - both then and now! Romantic atmosphere, friendly service, enjoyed a casual meal in the bar: big salad, added seared salmon. Tasty, fresh and healthy. Good selection of draft beers- we got a dark Sam Adam's Winter brew we really liked. Good place fir a quiet conversation. Stopped in Ann Arbor to break up the drive home from Interlochen Center for the Arts. A friend had suggested we try Gandy Dancer, partially because my partner recently retired from a 30+ year career on the railroad. This dinner was wonderful. We arrived about 5 minutes early for our reservation, and had to wait 10-15 minutes for our table. Emerald quickly served us a cocktail and a beer and was very welcoming to us. Then Thia came and got us to show us to our window table. She was kind, patient, and kept checking over her shoulder to ensure we hadn't gotten lost in the crowd. Within two minutes, Renee showed up to check on our drinks and get us settled in. What an asset Renee is to the Gandy Dancer's staff! She's been employed there, through several owners, for about 25 years. She's a gem! We each ordered a cup of lobster bisque, the best of the about ten lobster bisques I've tasted in my life. For our entrees, my partner ordered the Cajun Chicken Tortellini, and I enjoyed the Lemon Chicken. Both were delicious. We split the perfectly cooked Vanilla Creme Brûlée for dessert. The entire dinner was just right after a four hour drive and facing another four hour drive the next day. We loved the layout and decor of the restaurant. The noise level was restrained and didn't interfere at all with our conversation - a rare restaurant. characteristic in today's dining-out environment. Watching both Amtrak and freight trains pass by outside our window was a treat, and the bell-ringing and applause that celebrated the passing train was fun to witness. I have eaten here in the past and had great service and great food. Today we came with two other couples expecting the same thing. We arrived 30 minutes prior to our reservation and enjoyed a drink at the bar. Good so far. We sat down exactly at our reservation time. Our waiter, Tony, briefly stopped to the table and we asked what the specials were. He wierdly walked away while mentioning a couple dishes and acted like we had bothered him. As he walked off, I asked to order scallops for an appetizer and he disappeared. Ten minutes later our scallops arrived along with bread and crackers. Tony disappeared again for about15 minutes before returning to take our food and drink order. Drinks came and we enjoyed our drinks, appetizer and bread as we waited for our entrees. About 20 minutes later, Tony returned and said he lost his "paper" and needed to retake our order. We gave him the order again and asked for more crackers. Tony left and we didn't see him again for about 30 minutes without bringing any crackers or checking on our drinks. Another server dropped off the food at this time and asked if we needed anything. We told him we needed more water and would like to order drinks. He got us water and said he would tell our waiter we wanted to order drinks. As we were about finished eating, Tony finally came back and took our drink order. 10 minutes later he brought drinks but didn't have the drink order right. He left again and returned 5 minutes later with a dessert menu. We told him we were done and would like our checks. 5 more minutes passed and he brought out one check. We told him we were all couples and asked to have the check split up. 5 more minutes passed and Tony returned with the checks but had mixed up items on all of the checks. By this time we were pretty much fed up with waiting extended amounts of time for him each time we needed something so we each paid the checks we were given. Food review: Three members of our party had prime rib . One had been ordered medium well and came medium rare. One of the medium rare prime ribs was very tough and my friend stated that it had a bitter flavor. The coconut shrimp i ordered had very little coconut flavor and was more like plain fried shrimp. My wife ordered a cajun chicken pasta dish and loved it. A couple of us ordered butternut squash bisque which was fantastic. If the service was better, my review would have probably been a 4 out of 5. For the price we paid for eating here, the service we received was disappointing and the waiter made it uncomfotable. Decent food but overall not a good experience. It saddens me to write this but it has to be said because every time I go there now I just leave shaking my head. Last night was probably the worst. I was entertaining some people for a special occasion and we got an 815 seating to avoid loud noise and small children. Instead, what we got was a 9 PM server vacuuming loudly in the section next to us. We felt very rushed and pushed out of the place. They need to teach their servers professional etiquette and how to read a table and not interrupt unnecessarily. When I drop five bills at a restaurant I don't expect to hear a vacuum going when I'm trying to have a conversation or close a business deal. They need to train their waitstaff to be more professional. Serve your clients while being silent and stealth. If my water glass is empty, kindly refill it quietly and do not interrupt me to ask if I would like more water. You would never see this kind of service in New York or Chicago and I would love to see this restaurant succeed but right now it is definitely off my radar. What a cool place. The historic train station is beautiful. The trackside seating is an experience, especially when a train goes by. But I wouldn't turn down a seat anywhere inside either. This is a classy semi-formal yet laid-back restaurant. You can wear shorts and a t-shirt or a suit and won't be out of place. The staff are very friendly and professional. The food is on point. All was decent, but nothing to write home about. Drinks were reasonably priced - I had a build your own bloody Mary for six dollars. Although the server got the ingredients wrong for the toppings for the Bloody Mary. Service, other than the above, was good. They were good about whisking away your dirty dishes and giving you a new one with new silverware. After several years in Ann Arbor, we finally visited Gandy Dancer for the first time on Christmas Day for dinner. It's upscale and lovely. It is pricey, but well worth it for the ambiance, service, fun drink menu, excellent food, and Amtrak trains that go zipping by every now and then (shaking the entire restaurant!). I suggest shelling out a little extra cash for valet service to keep things easy. If you don't, it appears to be tricky to find parking. read more

We came to eat on Christmas Eve, and were promptly seated at a wonderful table. The ambiance of the restaurant is very upscale with a full bar, and the service on this night was on point. For appetizers we got the escargot and oysters both of which were delicious. I ordered a Caesar salad to start which came with anchovies. It was perfectly prepared with the right amount of Caesar sauce and not overkill. For dinner we got the prime rib with shrimp, and the filet mignon with lobster tail, once again, both of which were amazing, in particular the filet mignon, which I would get again and again. It was perfectly prepared and delicious inside and out. For dessert we got the Chocolate Layer Cake and Chocolate Truffle Cake. The chocolate cake was delicious, but the Chocolate Truffle Cake was magic. One of those desserts you would order everytime you came. Three of us were fighting over it with our spoons! Another great experience at the Gandy last night. I don't come here often so when I do, I make sure to enjoy the experience. The train came by which was cool to see. The apples and oranges drink was amazing. It was a very similar taste to a mimosa. For dinner I ordered the 14 oz Prime Rib, medium rare, with a crab cake. I got the lobster bisque soup and escargot before dinner and will say the soup was very very rich. I did not feel that well after consuming it which tainted my dinner sadly. My only complaint was it was very hot inside. We were sat in the room right next to the entrance. Even after asking them to turn the thermostat down, it didn't improve anything. read more

The interior is very roomy and I was told that in one part of the building, they have tables where you can watch the trains go past but that room was not available . We were there to celebrate my uncle's 95th birthday. There is a need to clean the cobwebs, dust from the light fixtures. We were annoyed by the numbers of flys in our section. As far as our meal. My wife ordered the prime rib. It was very well seasoned, cooked just right. I had the fish tacos, very good. It had plenty of fish. The fries were so so but they wasn't the main food. We have been coming here since Chuck Muir was the owner. I just showed my age. :) we haven't been to the GD for years. I was a little disappointed. When I was seated the first thing I noticed were the stains on our tablecloth. Our waiter was great and attentive. The calamari was ok. I had the surf and turf with potatoes and asparagus. The sides just looked and tasted like they had been sitting there for awhile. My filet mignon was delicious and cook perfectly, so was my lobster tail. And my chocolate cake was so big I had to take half home. We will be back, I just don't think they're at Muir quality. read more

First of all the space is really cool. An old building with lots of character, it is a bit of a maze trying to find the restroom, but still really cool. Lots of history. In the room we sat it, we could see the trains go by. Everyone claps which is fun. I was pretty excited about trying this place out but right off the bat, I knew we were going to have issues. My husband asks about the bourbon selection and she says "Not sure what we have" so my husband says "If you have it, I will take a Elijah Craig" and I ordered a dirty martini and she asked me how I wanted it, on ice or straight up. Um... straight up. Clearly cocktails are not her specialty. As we are looking over the menu the server brings out drinks and sets down a bourbon and says "we don't have Elijah Craig so I brought you a Woodford". WTF? My husband says "I don't want a Woodford, I'll just have Grey goose on the rocks". She was very accommodating and polite about it but who just subs a drink? And what about maybe saying, I am not sure what we have but I can check for you. Ok, so Bourbon isn't big here... We ordered some oysters (for him) and a brie to share. The brie was really good. So was the bread basket. We also had soup, I had the Butternut squash, which was fantastic, and he had the lobster bisque, which he enjoyed. Food was on point for sure. The menu is seafood heavy, which isn't my thing, but my husband loves it. He got the applejack sea bass and I got the 6 oz filet. Both entrees were really good. I think overall, the food was exactly what I would hope for. The service, was where things fell short. The pace seemed fast as far as how the food came out. Drinks were very slow and then when we had a question about the bill, our server was nowhere to be found. There is nothing that runs a good meal like service that leaves you feeling annoyed. Another server nearby was very sing-songy and that was annoying as well. She literally sang the names of the plates of food as she served them. It was weird and I am glad she wasn't our server. We wrapped things up with the crème brulee. At this point, it would have been nice to be offered coffee or a after dinner drink. It was very clear that our server was not interested in that level of experience for us. It is what it is. I would go back for the food and hopefully a better service experience. The Gandy Dancer is a fantastic place to have a nice dinner on a special occasion. Throughout our visit, the staff was extremely attentive and professional. We started our meal with warm bread that was served with a delicious smoked salmon pâté on the side. The pâté was wonderful, and made the classic bread and butter basket much more special. For our main course, we ordered the Parmesan crusted snapper with shrimp and the prime rib with shrimp scampi. The snapper had an excellent texture and flavor and was coated in a tasty cream sauce. It was served alongside a coconut ginger rice which complemented the fish well. My only qualm was that the dish was only served with two pieces of asparagus, which was disappointing to both the presentation and overall enjoyment the meal. The prime rib was perfectly cooked and paired well with the scampi. It was served with whipped potatoes which were good, but not special in any particular way. For dessert, we had the vanilla bean creme brûlée. It was absolutely delicious and one of the best we've ever had. Overall, we had a lovely dinner and we will definitely return. read more

I have been here about 4-5 times in the last couple of years. The food is usually very good but the service is not. The first time, my family of 5 arrived near the end of weekend brunch. The server was so annoyed at our last minute arrival and was trying to rush us along at every step. I hated this experience. Then we've had some ok experiences with nothing standing out. Then last week, I took two out-of-town work collaborators to dinner and we had a reservation. We arrived a little early and were invited to take a drink at the bar. I walked over to the bar with my guests and tried to gesture that I would like a drink....the woman shouted "We're fully booked!" She then walked away. I LOVE seafood. I don't eat it as often as I would like because it's a bit more expensive than other proteins and makes a huge stink in the kitchen if you don't know how to prepare fish or crustaceans properly. To me there is nothing better than the ambiance and feeling of having dinner at a nice seafood restaurant. Growing up my family were quite fond of Big Fish in Dearborn before they closed down. It was not a Michelin restaurant by any stretch of the imagination, but we attached nice memories to it and my parents especially enjoyed their grilled red snapper or grouper. Gandy Dancer really hit all the right notes with my wife and me when we came here to celebrate her birthday. It's elegant but not pretentious, as it once used to be a train station from what I gathered. The service was amazing with everyone thoughtfully wishing my wife a happy b-day when all I did was mention it once over the phone the day before. The bar is well stocked and the cocktails are imaginative and delicious such as the berry mule and smoked Manhattan but they also had a solid dirty martini that I enjoyed. The Bread Basket was warm with a delicious herbal bread, salmon pate and fresh butter. The Manhattan chowder was satisfying. Oysters on the Half Shell were fresh and wonderful. The Dynamite ScallopsI enjoyed the trio with salmon, coconut shrimp and the wonderful Coconut Shrimp was a perfect meal. I have been in the area for almost a year and have tried numerous restaurants in the Detroit Metro Area, decided to do the drive to Ann Arbor for this place as a co-worker of mine raves about it. Wow! I knew I was in for a treat when the bread came with a smoked salmon pate, it was delicious. I had the restaurant week menu so I chose the butternut squash bisque, shrimp and crab carbonara and the creme brûlée. Everything was excellent! The soup was creamy, tasty with just a hint of sweet, the shrimp was cooked to perfection and the creme brûlée was creamy with the right about of crisp. This quickly become my new favorite restaurant. The location is convenient and the building is historic and authentic as it's located in an old train station. Every year in late July, my family has a family reunion in Ann Arbor, which has been the home of my parents for 45 years. Part of this lalapalooza is a big meal at a great restaurant for about 30 people. This year it was lunch (dinner was booked over 3 mos in advance); next year we will book right away. The food. In a word, celestial. My wife had a chicken dish that was the best she has ever eaten in a restaurant. The veggies were great, the sauce was amazing (yay saucier!), and the overall effect sting. I went here tonight for Restaurant Week with a friend, and was excited to try it out since I hadn't been before. The deal they were offering was $28 for a three-course meal, which is a great price. I'm sick this week, so I started with tea. A briefcase-type box was presented to me, which was great, and I chose an orange herbal tea. From the restaurant week menu, I chose butternut squash soup, chicken cordon bleu, and the butter cake for dessert, all of which was very tasty. I think our waiter might have been new, because he was a little unfamiliar with the menu; also, he brought me a piece of the chocolate cake (the other dessert option) but soon corrected it. The restaurant was busy because of restaurant week, but when we left, no one even looked in our direction (to say goodbye) which was a bit disappointing. Also, and I know this is petty, but... we were never given bread. Totally forgot about that but I had read about the interesting bread spreads on Yelp, and then a couple sat down next to us and were immediately presented with bread. The decor and the food were great, though, so I'll be back at some point. I need to look up the building's history, too - it's the old Ann Arbor train station and I believe it's from the late 1800s or early 1900s. Very cool. read more
