Food was overpriced, went in with big hopes about food, menu on line looked great, but it was not what we expected. Asked for a table at 5:15 and they said everything was taken but we could sit by bar where high tables and bar stools were available. We ordered food from happy hour and regular menu, chilean sea bass was oily and undercooked. Bathrooms were ok no soap available, I asked staff and an hour later still none. It was not really crowded at 6:30 when we left, so we were a bit puzzled that tables were not available and nothing in website saids to make reservations. Grew up in Ann Arbor and this was the fanciest place to eat back then. Take your mom here for Mother's Day brunch and you showed her you loved her the most. Then I vaguely remember rumors about the owner getting lost in the Bermuda Triangle and the restaurant never being the same again. Went to college at U of M and never came back. But then my parents decided to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary where it all started and we had dinner here with them AND our 4 and 6 year old. I've grown up on the coasts, and spoiled by NY and Chesapeake Bay seafood in the US. While coming to Gandy with those expectations of tasting sea-fresh fish is an unfair standard to have, I was still underwhelmed by the food. The ambiance served to compensate since I came here around Valentine's Day weekend, and the service was impeccable for one of the busiest date nights of the year. We got the coconut shrimp, shrimp scampi, and sea bass to share. While the shrimp scampi was notches above the one at Gratzi, it was lacking the fresh taste of shrimp that often complements the aromas of garlic and the sauce. The sea bass was a delicate, light addition to our meal, but the portion yet again, was smaller than expected and a little chewy, which makes me suspect this was fresh-frozen for a pretty long time too. Our favorite of the night was the coconut shrimp, which was crisped perfectly, and the bread which came with dips. It isn't the best look for a seafood restaurant to have a bread basket to be more memorable than entrees, but it is the best possible option in Ann Arbor! read more

I came here for Restaurant Week and ordered a Martha's Vineyard salad and Salmon with maple glaze atop sweet potato mash. Food: The food was plated beautifully. The salad was huge and a vibrant green--no wilted leaves. The salmon was a good size and well-seasoned, albeit a bit lukewarm. I have gone here for some 30 years and the last four years have been a failure. I keep trying but tonight was the last straw. 2 hours for food. Appetizers over cooked. Table plates piled up had to ask for help to get them removed. Main course over cooked. Plate set up sloppy. Not once was anything good tonight. Spent a almost $500 for four and a total let down. This restaurant has been on my bucket list for a long time so I was really excited when I saw it on the list of restaurants participating in restaurant week! There is parking right across the street in a small lot but I also noticed that they offered valet. I went with a group of 6 friends after making a reservation and we were very promptly seated. The interior was warm and inviting, but still had a formal/fine dining vibe. Because there was a set course menu, I chose to get the Martha's Vineyard Salad, Cedar planked Parmesan shrimp, and the Caramel Apple bread pudding. We were given warm, fresh bread and crackers to start which was served with butter and some kind salmon spread which was very yummy. The salad was just a typical bed of spring veggies, with some onion and cheese toppings but nothing that really stood out. The entree came with asparagus, potatoes, and six juicy pieces of shrimp. It was very filling and flavorful! Last came the caramel apple bread pudding which came with vanilla ice cream on top! This may have been the highlight due to the presentation and the delicious combination of the warm bread pudding and cold ice cream. Overall, I would come back for a special occasion but I would probably skip the appetizers. read more

We needed somewhere to go for Christmas dinner and there weren't that many places to choose from. My daughter and I looked up places way in advance while she was back home in NY and we went on a recommendation from a reddit subscriber. We made the reservation via open table a month in advance and had to use a credit card to hold the reservation ($25). We looked at the menu in advance to try to get an idea of what we would get. A few days before Christmas a special holiday prefix menu was uploaded. The menu that was uploaded was a bit incomplete but what we saw were some pretty decent options and thought, even if we didn't get the prefix there were other good options. The prices were a bit on the pricey side but that was to be expected for a fine dining restaurant. Upon arrival for our 3:30 reservation we had to wait about 5 minutes. There was a bench we were able to sit on while we waited. The restaurant is super cute and cozy and was decorated really pretty for Christmas. We were seated at a table by the window (which I dislike) with a view of the train tracks. When we got the menu we noticed how the prefix menu online was incomplete because for entrées it only showed prime rib and shrimp but the physical menu had other options. For an appetizer not on the prefix menu we got coconut shrimp in a mango sauce with a mango salsa. The shrimp were about 5 on a plate. They were cooked nice and crispy but lacked coconut flavor. The sauce was very tasty. They put warm bread and butter and seeded crackers on the table as well. For our starter as part of the prefix we both chose a seafood chowder. The chowder was tasty and had lots of fish and crab. It was a very tomato/veggie based stock.. For our entrées I chose the stuffed salmon and my daughter got the parmesan crusted snapper. My dish came with mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus. My daughter's came with ginger rice and asparagus as well. My salmon was so delicious the filling was shrimp, crab and lobster. It was garnished with a bernaise sauce and red peppers. My daughter's dish also came with garlic shrimp. We both really enjoyed our entrées. The protein was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. My potatoes could have used some butter and S & P. My asparagus was cooked well. Not too soft or too hard, but my daughter said one of hers was inedible because it was so hard. For dessert I chose the artisan cheesecake and my daughter got the creme Brule. She said hers was really good and creamy and the top sugared part was toasted to a good bitter flavor. My cheesecake was pretty good. It was creamy and drizzled with raspberry coulie and a dollop of whipped cream. There were also a few fresh raspberries on the plate. The tartness of the raspberry and the sweetness of the cheesecake were a perfect combination. Christmas dinner was a success! The service was good and the way the food came out in succession with the right amount of time in between was to my liking. read more

I attended a wedding here a few weeks back and I along with 100 others witnessed so many unfortunate things. They were understaffed, our salads had no dressing, there was almost a 2 hour gap between salad and dinner, dinner was cold, we didn't get dessert. The poor bride and groom only got 45 minutes of dance time once everyone had eaten. Tons of dirty dishes everywhere. Noticed some staff had very bad attitude's. We had to ask for the side walls to be put down because people were freezing and for them to turn on the lights because we were in the dark. Mind you there was an event coordinator!! Nothing went smoothly besides the love from friends and family for the bride and groom. For Gandy Dancer supposedly being an Ann Arbor staple it sure has gone down hill. I felt terrible for the bride and groom and I would not recommend anyone to have their event here. I really do hope the owners read the reviews and do something to make this right at minimum compensation of sorts. Went to brunch this weekend. It opens at 10 AM and that was the time we chose for our reservation. The Gandy Dancer is one of the few places left in Ann Arbor that still serves a buffet style brunch. It is a big place, and they wanted to put us in the area that is farthest from the brunch, but accommodated my request to be in the main ground floor dining room. It is right on the train tracks, and the Amtrak came through while we were there. People still clap and the servers ring a bell as the train goes by. It has beautiful floor to ceiling windows in the main room, which afford one the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine (weather permitting - it is Michigan after all...) There is a variety of blood Mary choices, my friend liked the dirty Mary. I loved the mango mojito. There are several stations - the breakfast type of foods (eggs, eggs Benedict, bacon, hash browns etc). There is a station for waffles, salads, the toasting station with a variety of breads, seafood station (shrimp, mussels, creamed herring & several types of salmon) a station with kids food (don't skip the mac and cheese all you adults!), and a sweets station. I might have missed one, but you get the idea - there are a lot of choices. they will also make you an omelet, which you order from your server. While none of the food choices were out of this world, almost everything was good. The roast beef was rare and had a nice horseradish sauce on the side. The shrimp were a little dried out, but I am sure that this might be change on different weekends. The Gandy Dancer had nice, safe, brunch fare. A group can go and everyone find things to eat. I don't think the brunch offerings has changed much over the past 20 years. But, it is all you can eat, you get to sample a variety of items. The location is beautiful and service was good. Came here again for brunch. Had an awesome mango Bellini and my dining companion built here own Bloody Mary. Although the waiter got one of her ingredients incorrectly, it was still good. Drinks are very reasonably price. The build your own bloody Mary was six dollars and the Bellini was 7. There was the usual Gandy Dancer brunch fare. There was a salmon Florentine that was nice. Prime rib was also very good. There was ham and smoked turkey that I did not try. They have a kids section with chicken fingers and tater tots, among others. There is a table of small desserts. There was a Keylime cheesecake a strawberry cheesecake and a variety of chocolate desserts. There is always a jazz quartet on Sunday mornings. They provide a nice backdrop in the room where the food is. It continues to remain a solid place for a brunch. read more

Our family's celebratory dinner at the "Dancer" last night turned out to be the exceptional experience we had hoped for from the minute we dropped off our vehicle with the valet. Coming directly from Metro Airport, we arrived at Ann Arbor's turn-of-the-century train station turned restaurant at about 9:30 pm. At this time, many of the Friday night 7:00 pm tables were just opening up. We snagged a nice 4-top by the windows in what I call the Garden Room adjacent to the tracks. Built in 1896, I love the architecture of this place...granite masonry and soaring ceilings throughout from a long-gone era. We started with the Martha's Vineyard Salad and Charley's Chowder, a classic Mediterranean-style throwback to the Chuck Muer heydays of the Motor City...5-Stars all the way. For entrees, we sample a few classic dishes including the Pecan Encrusted Whitefish, the Prime Steak & Lobster Tail and carnivore-city...the 18-ounce, Slow Roasted Prime Rib. Each was garnished with a delicious scoop of mashed sweet potatoes. Over the moon baby! This visit, with outstanding service by Luis, the "Dancer" earned the solid nickel. read more

Have been partaking in GD for too many decades to count, but most recently was impressed by the continually excellent service and quality food at this establishment. The surf and turf (small filet and lobster tail) was done nicely, although the tail was just a bit overcooked to my liking. Others in our party partook in the sea bass (excellent), stuffed salmon (wonderfully presented and tasting), scallops (very good) with the portobello mushroom as well as the crusted shrimp starters considered by consensus excellent. The wine list is fairly extensive, although the by the glass offerings are a bit less than what would be expected. Nonetheless all could find aperitifs that were satisfactory. Parking can be an issue if you don't valet, but there are enough spots in general around from the train station to across the street where it's not the same hunting expedition as on Main Street. read more

I'm giving the Gandy Dancer five stars for a combination of food, service, and ambience. The dinner menu is very seafood heavy, but they do have some chicken and beef dishes. The food here is good, but not fantastic, cutting-edge, tell-all-your-friends, omg, fantastic. Service here is personable and professional. The old train station ambience is nice (and a treat when the train passes). We went here to celebrate our anniversary and the Gandy Dancer really came through as a special occasion restaurant. In addition to giving us a free dessert, they printed special menus for us with congratulations across the top. Also, earlier in the week my husband had dropped off engraved wine glasses and they served our wine in them. They even saved the wine glass boxes to put the glasses in to take home. read more

The Gandy Dancer is an Ann Arbor institution! I've had some good meals and some great meals. Experienced great service and experienced ok service. Prior to COVID, their happy hour could not be beat. Great appetizer and drink specials! I really like their shrimp scampi. On my last visit, we came to celebrate my mom's birthday. The complimentary bread and salmon pate was fantastic. Drinks were very good. My mom had two glasses of merlot, I had the grapefruit compari and a glass of pinot Grigio and my husband had a beer and glass of pinot Grigio. They have an amazing wine/beer/cocktail list. My mom loved her scallops and my husband declared the steak he had was one of the best. I was disappointed by the crab cakes. I feel they could have been a bit more flavorful. Caesar salad was great. They have plenty of nice options... Steak, chicken, seafood and vegetarian. While I have never had their desserts, I have been tempted. They have a very talented pastry chef and I've heard they are wonderful. I can't wait to try at some time. The ambiance is beautiful. Easily the best restaurant in AA. That being said, for the tier of this restaurant (price, ambience, hype) it is relatively "okay". The overall selection is unmatched for AA, compared to just steakhouses. However, they are survived by their cocktails. The building is amazing. There were 8 of us after an event at the university. The reservation phone staff was great. I just was dissapointed about the food especially for the money charged. I ordered the skirt streak and schrimp combo and an alacart 10.00 salad. The schrimp were the 30 count size just bigger than a quarter. The portion of steak was pretty small too. Served luke warm too. One small chicken breast for my wifes lemon chicken entry was skimpy too. One waitress servicing 8 people for a 50.00 meal is skimpy too. My husband took me here for my Birthday before heading out for a night in Detroit. This is a very nice place. It was quiet. The food was amazing and I got a cocktail called apples n oranges. I enjoyed a beef filet entree (came wish smashed redskins and asparagus) and it was cooked perfectly. Instead of salad or soup I ordered the Crab & Avocado Timbale. This starter was presented beautifully on the plate in the shape of a "tower." See photo. It was also plentiful--a very good portion--and very tasty. Of course their bread basket has the best bread rolls :) The menu has a nice selection of items without overwhelming you. The wine by the glass menu is a bit limited, but I found one I liked. I also tried one of their specialty cocktails, called the French Pear 75, which was made with Grey Goose La Poire Vodka, Belle de Brillet Poire Liqueur, Lunetta Prosecco, and Cardamom bitters, and fresh lemon juice. It was served in a champaign flute, and it was really good. The ambience here is quite charming, and the history of the restaurant is equally interesting. The bar is off to the left when you walk in the door, and there is a selection of tables in case you don't want to "belly up" as I did. Otherwise, the restaurant is all on one floor (near as I could tell) with a variety of seating options. Steve was my server and he was helpful, friendly, efficient with his time and generous with recommendations. He also made the above drink since I was eating at the bar and he was the bartender. Built into the old 19th century Romanesque train station, Gandy Dancer opened decades ago under the management of Chuck Muir restaurants. I first visited here in 1986 for seafood dinner and everything was absolutely delicious. Very nice sharp decor. Pricey. Hadn't been back in 35 years. I was here for a brunch recently and was very impressed. The choices ranged from salads, fruit, bagels, assorted cheeses, crackers, pastries and the like. The only reason we went was that our friends like this place and were back in town after moving a few years ago. Never again. We had a reservation for 8 people. We got a terrible table with way too much traffic and asked to move. That only got worse as we sat in a booth that had extreme heat blowing from a vent under the bench seat. My food was just ok but my wife's chicken dish was one of the worst dinners I have ever been served. We complained about the heat and the dish and no offer to remove it from the bill. My boyfriend and I went to Gandy Dancer on a date. Overall, we found the experience lacking. The interior of the restaurant is very nice. The architecture is very interesting, and it's nice that there are multiple rooms. The room in the back has wall to wall windows, which is nice. We ordered the lobster bisque, and butternut squash bisque to start (FYI, neither soup nor salad are included with your meal unless you do their twilight prefix menu which ends at 5:30). They were delicious - very flavorful, hot and well seasoned. The browned butter crouton on the butternut squash soup was the highlight, my boyfriend said he wished there were more. For dinner we ordered the dynamite mahi mahi, and the lobster and shrimp stuffed salmon. The mahi mahi came with coconut ginger rice and asparagus. The salmon came with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Both of us really enjoyed the fish we ordered, but were highly disappointed in the sides. My mashed potatoes were lumpy, and had no flavor at all, and tasted like there wasn't cream, butter or salt in them. It was literally like a mashed baked potato. The rice on my boyfriends plate had very little flavor, and I have no idea why it is called coconut ginger rice. It didn't taste like coconut or ginger in the slightest, it tasted like it was cooked in chicken broth. It didn't have any coconut or ginger in it, but looked like there might have been bell peppers in it. The asparagus was cooked fine, but had zero salt, pepper, spices, butter or anything else on it. It was just plain asparagus. For the price we were paying for the dishes, I expected the sides to be good. Lastly was our waiter. He was a nice guy, but very inattentive. There were 2 other tables in our area that were his, and he spent ample time with both of those tables, and checked on them fairly often. For us, he was missing for about 20- 25 minutes at a time, even though he was in the area with the other 2 tables. We wanted to order dessert but by the time he finally came back we didn't have time because we had somewhere to be so we skipped it. We think this is because we didn't order alcohol. Even so, our bill was over $100, so we should have had better service. We might be back, we might not. It just wasn't impressive and I don't feel like I need to tell people how great it was. read more

What you're paying for: the ambiance, location and history. This place is considered to be an institution in Ann Arbor. It's beautiful, sure, but it's definitely not worth the price you're paying for the food you're receiving. My review is going to seem pretty harsh, but, I wanted to be honest. Gandy Dancer is defintiely not a place a vegetarian would ever flock to. I KNOW this place isn't for vegetarians - I get it. The fact they even have an item for vegetarians is probably worth applauding, but it's so mediocre that it's kind of disappointing that they don't even try to make something creative or nice for vegetarians while every other dish on their menu for a meat eater or pescatarian sounds amazing. There are literally 3 things someone could order on their menu that doesn't include a salad or sides: almond encrusted brie (appetizer); beets and burrata (technically a salad but it's on their appetizer menu) and a pasta dish that can be made vegetarian (basically without chicken). I've only been here one other time and it was during restaurant week and that actually was better than this dining experience for a birthday dinner. At least for restaurant week they had a vegetarian option for a first, second, main and dessert course. For this particular meal we shared a pasta dish ($17 for rubbery noodles and chew portobello mushrooms), two sides (asparagus and croquettes) and an appetizer. The beet and burrata was probably the best thing we ate, but that certainly wouldn't be a meal for someone. ...Or be a reason to come back. Other than the pasta dish which is $21 with chicken or $17 without, there is nothing else on the main entree menu we could eat. I had hoped at least some of the soups could be made vegetarian, maybe another seasonal vegetarian dish, but nope. When you tack that on with everything else we had and the drinks our less-than-stellar meal for two was $92. Totally not worth it. You are absolutely paying for the atmosphere of sitting in an old, historic and beautiful building, but if you want some really good food for that price you're better off trying one of Ann Arbor's other great restaurants. read more

We both ordered the mango mojito and a selection of appetizers that consisted of the queso dip, blue cheese sliders, firecracker poppers, and shrimp and crab quesadilla. I also ordered a cheesecake because, why not? I deserve a dessert too even though it's not my birthday! The drink was delicious and the appetizers were great! The food were pretty small quantities, almost like tapas, but they were all good! My only knock is that I sat without being greeted by my server for a solid 10 minutes and the food is a little pricey for what you get. Wow! I was impressed with this place. We visited on the most busiest of nights-- MOTHER'S DAY. We had no reservation, yet there were kind to let us know that seating was available at the bar. Here are specific highlights 1. Service- The staff there--despite being bartenders-- truly worked as a team. They made us feel welcomed and appreciated our business, even when we had no reservation. And as such, I was proud to tip them generously. They truly earned it. Lots of restaurants can learn from this staff. 2. Ambience-- while we're at the bar, we could still feel the ambience of this former train depot. The music was right, the lighting was appropriate. I can't wait to eat in the dining room to get a history of the place. 3. Food- it came out hot and tasty. Love how creative the menu is for a seafood restaurant. In the past at Gandy Dancer, I've asked for my salmon to be cooked simply with garlic and tomatoes and they were very accommodating. Today, Mothers Day, I asked if they would have time to cook it that way again. First Chef sends back word that he had never cooked it that way. Then he sends salmon with shrimp on it, which I'm allergic to. And finally he sends my salmon with some sort of canned looking tomato celery stuff on top. So for the price of my meal,, I got called a liar and given some prepackaged topping on an otherwise nice piece of salmon. Never again. read more
