Let's start off by saying the ambience is a bit cold and not welcoming. From the broken window outside in the gazebo to the hostess and host at the front desk. You book a reservation arrive treated rudely and told to wait while they serve other guests and see them in front of you. When I asked to speak to a manager about it her approach was also rude and tried to sit us at a table next to the server station. When I said that was not appropriate for a birthday celebration and all of the restaurant pretty much empty; it was rude inconsiderate and if I may form of opinion I feel it was because we had a transgender person with us and a gay person with us. What you find there is very rich snobby people. The food is overpriced and mediocre. When celebrating a special occasion I would not recommend this place or if you're different than the upper crust in Ann Arbor I would not recommend this place. read more

A staple in Downtown Ann Arbor area - Gandy Dancer has a cool backstory of it being in an old train station and the ambiance really captures that view and feeling of the history. Service was great - wait staff was really quick and nice. Food is on the pricier side - it's a nice spot so that's to be expected! I got the crab cake sandwich and it was so delicious. I've never had a crab cake in sandwich form before so it was a really nice surprise. The fish and chips are also so great - really crisp and flavorful. Creme brûlée for dessert is always an amazing choice - it was so creamy and full of vanilla bean flavor. read more

I've dined at the Gandy Dancer restaurant for 45 years and during todays, 11/19/25, lunch my girlfriend found a gray hair in her salad. She has curly blond hair. She had already eaten about half of the salad and declined to eat the rest of it. When the bill arrived, we were still charged full price for the salad. When we requested a refund for the salad, the waitress, Relacha, refused to discount the bill stating, "No one in the kitchen has gray hair, implying we were lying about the hair, and you ate the protein (chicken)" We requested to speak to the manager, who came over and reiterated that "no one in the kitchen has gray hair", again implying we were lying. She did refund half of the cost of the salad. I discounted the rest of the salad cost from the waitress's tip. I can only remember one other experience at the Gandy Dancer of such dismissive, rude and bad customer service by wait staff and the manager. Needless to say, we won't waste our time and money on this restaurant again. read more

What a lovely experience we had at the Gandy Dancer. Great ambiance, and excellent service. The food was delicious, especially the crab mahi mahi and the steak. We recently went to the Gandy Dancer for our 34th anniversary. The ambiance is great for special occasions. We have been there many times in the past. This was our first return since Covid. The meal was very good. We split a wedge salad and lobster bisque. For dinner, I had scallops. Which I liked. And we split crème brûlée for dessert. The service was very good. This is a historic seafood restaurant that requires a nice outfit for a fancy night out. We started with the lobster bisque and a shrimp cocktail. Both were fine. We each ordered a fish entree with oscar/dynamite topping- I liked my partner's choice more than mine which was the sea bass with dynamite. Unfortunately, the entrees were underwhelming in taste, quality, and presentation. They both basically came with Panda Express-like fried rice. I expected a lot more from a famous restaurant such as the Gandy Dancer. read more

Dined here for the first time recently, and while I certainly enjoyed the experience, I also have some mixed feelings. FOOD/DRINKS: My friend and I shared the dynamite mahi mahi and the tenderloin duet. - Mahi mahi -- tender and soft with some overcooked areas for both the mahi mahi and the asparagus. Crab topping provided great flavor and texture contrast. Rice tasted more like the fried rice from my elementary school lunches, with little coconut flavor - Tenderloin duet -- Cooked perfectly (medium rare)! Loved the huge juicy shrimps too. Mashed potato was fine, but paled in comparison to the rest of the dish - Mango mojito -- amazing! Perfect for those who love mint + lime. Super refreshing and took all my power to not chug it. SERVICE: Very attentive, helpful, and friendly waiter. Due to the 1.5h dining time limit, the clearing of the table felt rushed (finished dishes were promptly cleared and dessert menus were provided, even though some were still finishing their mains). At least we weren't rushed out. ENVIRONMENT: somewhat upscale with predominantly middle-aged/older diners. Interesting location next to train tracks with the occasional train passing by. COVID PRECAUTIONS: 1.5h dining limit for cleaning, masks required, hand sanitizer available. Tables possibly 6ft apart, but it's hard to imagine them being any closer OVERALL: Good food, drinks, and service, but poor value given the multiple shortcomings (nearly $55 for the mahi mahi + mojito, including tip). Would return, but not a place I'd seek out. read more

Where do I start? Without reservations, we were able to get a table on a very busy evening and I'm so thankful that we did. This historic landmark and fine dining establishment. Various dining rooms are connected with rich wood detail from ceilings to windows and wainscoting. Jasmine, our server knew the menu and provided excellent recommendations. We started with the Brie appetizer which instantly told us that we were in for a culinary thrill. The Caesar salad was very tasty and fresh and the lobster bisque was probably THE BEST I've ever had in my entire life. Between the sherry, crème fresh (?) and the overall texture, consistency and lobster flavor set this aside from any others. By the time our main courses arrived, we were already full! My husband had the prime rib, whipped potatoes with a crab cake. He forced himself to finish his steak, which was one of the best he's had. I had the seared sea scallops with butternut risotto. All six were perfectly cooked and nicely complemented the sweetness of the risotto. We were too stuffed for dessert, but that's okay. Clearly, we'd reached nirvana, and will return when in Ann Arbor! read more

This is part of the Landry's chain. Reminded me of the Grand Concourse in Pittsburgh that was part of Muir Seafood bought out by Landry. It was also a railroad theme by a railroad. The muny had similarities in items and design. I liked that Restaurant. They offered the same flatbread and rolls with butter or salmon spread. Caesar salad with anchovies was great. I ordered the Ultimate Seafood trio with a great crabcake, Enjoyable Coconut shrimp with mango sauce and a pathetically small and thin piece of salmon. My daughter got the Snapper Hemingway (crab on top) and my wife got the same as me but subbed shrimp scampi. She agreed on my salmon assessment. Our Server David was great! He has been there 12 years. We were the only table after 8pm. My wife loved the chilled gazpacho. To make extra money they charge 4.00 for sparkling water. Still water is free. Drinks were good. The landry select club is great. Every year you get a 25 dollar birthday reward. Will be back. read more

For a special night out, Gandy Dancer has an ambiance, menu, and service that is difficult to top. With an elegant setting in the old train station, you're sure to enjoy every aspect of your meal here. I visited recently for the first time with the gentleman. He had arranged for us to celebrate a special occasion and surprised me with dinner reservations here. We were brought to our table by the window, all the better for seeing the trains and the world go by while we enjoyed our meal. Our server was very attentive throughout, and we started out the meal with some shrimp (sorry for the lack of photo, I was enjoying myself too much to remember to capture it!) With a nice umami flavor and a texture that popped with freshness, we could have easily ordered and eaten a second one before our main course. I continued with the seafood and ordered scallops for my entree. It came with a side of fresh vegetables. Which were steamed and seasoned perfectly, as well as a pyramid of brown rice. The scallops were melt-in-your-mouth buttery soft. Neither of us knows exactly how Gandy Dancer procures such fresh seafood despite being in the Midwest, but whatever they do, it is working! Our meal finished with a complimentary crème brûlée. We cracked the top layer of caramelized sugar before enjoying the delicious vanilla cream interior. It was a perfect end to a very delicious dining experience. For a night out that is more dining experience than just a meal, look no further than the Gandy Dancer and you're sure to be in great hands! read more

I'm being kind with two stars, we expected so much better especially for the cost. This was the worst meal and service we have ever had there. The six of us (all adults) went there to celebrate my wife and son's birthday. It was my wife's idea to go there based on our previous visits, which were very good. It started out nicely as we were able to sit next to the big Christmas tree as my wife requested, but was mostly disappointment to follow. We expected a great meal like we've had there on previous visits, but: The cosmopolitan in the martini glass was only half way filled which is 1/3 based on volume and way overpriced for the amount served. The $13 Caesar salad was overpriced for the size & quality. The $10 cups of soup were only warm. The bread basket came very late. Our waiter only came by a few times, we had someone hunt him down for the drink reorder. It took well over 20 minutes for drink refills which arrived after we mostly finished our disappointing meals. Our meals were brought to the table one or two plates at a time by some random person. Not sure what happened to our waiter. The $72 ribeye was completely charred and cupped up on one side but at least seamed to be cooked correctly (MR). It was warm but the mashed potatoes were stone cold. The strip steak was overcooked (asked for M), barely warm and was closer to well done - dried out. My daughter ate only the few center slices that wasn't completely ruined & had some of his ribeye. ALL of the sides were cold & only my wife had warm salmon. Her mashed potatoes were stone cold and hard - she never complains about food at a restaurant. My sea bass was tiny but still a bit warm, the rice was cool and lacking in flavor, the broccolini was stone cold. I came home hungry and felt robbed. My son was silent about his specially topped sea bass so I know he was disappointed too. His girlfriend said she liked the scallops but did not finish them, she was mostly quiet. I really wanted us to have a great meal experience. Our waiter never followed up until we mostly finished our meals and he came with the very late drink order blaming it on a "backup at the bar". He offered to send the manager, but an assistant manager came by later. He did comp the very poorly prepared strip steak and she did get a slice of key lime pie which was good. My wife and son did get a free crème brûlée with a candle for their birthday- probably the best thing they served. Nobody wanted to complain but later everyone said the same thing - the meal was cold and very DISAPPOINTING. The bill was $400 and I overtipped 15% for the poor service because it so close to the holiday. Much of the blame is on the absent server but the kitchen is not faultless. I expect the food to be delivered to the table promptly and expected more from the management. I provided feedback on their website and wonder if it will be acknowledged. If they do the right thing, I will report back. read more

We are very upset and sad. Tonight was our 1 year wedding anniversary and we wanted to splurge on a nice dinner. Our waiter came to our table to only give us our drinks and he was never seen again but sure walked past us plenty of times..the food runner was the one who had to bring out our food. Our waiter did not come to our table ONCE to ask if we needed any refills or how our food was. Didn't check one time to see if we needed anything. I finally had to flag down staff to get our waiter over to our table so they could fix our food and had to flag another staff member (once again) for a steak knife so we didn't have to use the butter knife to cut it. Steak was not done the way we asked and Lobster was pretty much cold. This was extremely disappointing since we were looking forward to a nice dinner for our 1st wedding anniversary. I regret not telling staff about how horrible our server was because we are usually not those kind of people but for the amount of money we spent, it was very upsetting. I was shocked, when our waiter finally gave us our bill he didn't even ask how our food was or anything. I regret coming here. Very disappointing and I am very saddened that this is how our 1st wedding anniversary dinner had to turn out. Horrible. read more

The food and ambience are always great but service has been very disappointing lately. I have been there twice this month and I am not sure if service is bad because of lack of training or bad employee attitude that is not being addressed ... I wish the manager would make some rounds at the tables and talk to customers for feedback. Let me first start by saying that this has been our FOURTH Christmas here. It was sort of becoming a family tradition. We like to sit at the end of the restaurant in the brighter and quieter section. Our server was Ryan who forgot to introduce himself, did not explain any specials or menu highlights. My kids had to ask for more bread, more water, more butter. My husband ordered wine with his entree (way before the food came) but the single and only glass of wine showed up 15min after the food was served. Once we finished our dinner, Ryan was nowhere to be found (wait! He seemed to be taking orders everywhere else and would pass our table and not even make an eye contact or bother to ask if we needed anything), He finally gave us some attention after 20min we waited for him. But the rudeness did not stop! When he finally came back, he promptly asked us about take out boxes for our leftovers but completely ignore me saying that my kids would like to see the dessert menu. Obviously, no dessert for us and another 20min to get the bill! Ryan chose how I should enjoy my Christmas! Dinner but no dessert We were loyal patrons even during COVID when Gandy had to set up the 'covered patio' as a dinning area for Christmas so this is very disappointing but worst yet, this is the second time this month. Very similar experience regarding lack of courtesy and attention. We talked to the manager during the first fiasco and to see this happening again is more than disappointing. It is a chronic issue! read more

Doris approved. Friends, I did enjoy thanksgiving here this year. Happy to report it was wonderful. Not a jeans, sweats, or pjs place. Valet is offered. Tips only. Very friendly and worth it. A coursed meal was offered for thanksgiving but we skipped that. We both had white wine and both were super yummy. Apps- oysters and they were very fresh and very good. I highly recommend. Next came soups. Both tasty The butternut squash soup was buttery and light. Dinner- Sea bass- cooked well and acted as a true standout. My father had the snapper with shrimp let me tell you it was better than mine. For dessert we had apple pie and crème brûlée. Both very well done. For two people, everything listed the bill landed around $150.00. A charming note- when the train rolls by the staffs stops and claps. The people who work on the train wave to everyone in the restaurant. I highly recommend for a family meal, date night or somewhere to go for a beautiful memory. Oh and the waiter forgot my wine but he was nice and running around. Either way it was thanksgiving and I was grateful for him, our meal, and time with my father. Happy thanksgiving all! read more

Dinner tonight was at another highly rated town favorite. But it wasn't that up to par at all. Paul our waiter was top notch and tended to our every need. But still many main dishes were off mark. Skippy told me in a smaller college town like Ann Arbor, the restaurants don't have to really compete against so many others like in Honolulu. The college kids will always think the food is better than the dormitory kitchens. Next trip here we will head to the local mom and pop restaurants, if there are any? We started off with drinks. For one thing not all drink were available off their extensive cocktail menu. Even after, the bar ran out of 4 Roses bourbon. Ok on to the appetizers. See comments at my photos, but nothing really was outstanding. Maybe the calamari was different with a Chinese touch. Main mean. Well my halibut was cooked well done and cardboard dry. So sad. The bone in New York steak was done Darkened Chicago style, but take a look at my photo. Why would you ever want to serve a guest something that looks so black and shinny?
