Their food is actually delicious, although definitely a little bit greasy. You can get takeout, eat outside, or you can eat inside with table service, although the last time I ate inside the restaurant it was a little bit dirty. However when you're getting takeout, there's a window into the kitchen and it appears to be quite clean, and the food is handed directly to you. He stopped me, saying he knew of a "Dom place". It was Galloping Hill. He had a burger and said it was good... I had two hot dogs with kraut and mustard. Mistake! The dogs are gigantic. One would have been enough. But the dogs had a good "snap" and the kraut was piled high, hot and fresh. The good brown mustard was tangy. If you're looking for a good hot dog, this place definitely ranks among the best ones in the area. This place has been a staple in town for as long as I can remember. It's been open way longer than I've been alive (since 1925 I believe), so I can only assume business has been going well and that customers enjoy. The prices for them were fair, so no complaints on that end. Couple random things to point out, both good and bad: -Though they are known for their hot dogs, their menu is huge. Have a good variety of things, so be sure to look through before you order. -One thing I really liked was that the employees were all very friendly. As I was eating my meal, plenty of other customers stopped in and the cashiers seemed to know the majority of them by name, and had good conversations with them. Seems to be a lot of regular customers and the staff definitely seems to care to keep up with them. -Plenty of seating, both indoors and out. I want to love this place. So badly. I used to love this place. We used to pick this place to go for lunch at least once a month. I've updated this review so many times. They take so long. Nothing is ever right. The food tastes alright. It took almost 2 hours for us to get out of there last time.. our lunch is only an hour! The one thing I see coming up in reviews all the time are the buns. They changed them, and despite pleas for them to go back or at least try something different, they still have the same cruddy buns they switched to. The buns were something that let us overlook a lot of the other issues, but now those have been gone for years and the other issues got worse. I hate it. I wasn't highly anticipating anything but I got excited when I saw the stainless steel exterior and the aluminum sheeted ceiling. We walked in at 7:59 and there were Other people waiting for food. Rude older worker comes out at 8 and said if you didn't order we are closed. We were already in line inside the door. You all know that I am constantly in search of the best hot dogs in NJ so when I can, I stop for hot dogs...which means I'm usually NOT with Wifey and I very well may be with co-workers. Anyway, I used to come to Galloping Hill WAAAAAYYYY back when it was Peterson's...35-40 years ago. The hot dogs THEN were amazing-so good that I still remember them to this day. Galloping Hill, you had big shoes ot fill and you filled them quite nicely! I'm not sure what brand of hot dog they use here, but the "snap" when you bite into them hasn't changed in 40 years. I had three dogs here...a Chili-cheese dog, a chili-cheese and kraut dog, and a Kraut, onions and mustard dog. We also shared cheese fries and my co-worker had a cheese steak. Everything was outstanding. Chili was top-notch, kraut and onions were full of flavor, the buns were fresh and though they were a little large for the dogs, they were tasty. Look, I've traveled far and wide in NJ for hot dogs and This place is DEFINITELY in my top ten in the state...possibly even my top five...but to make sure I may have to stop in again. Even if there is a little bite of cold in the air we still love it. I love that when I sit outside I can see everyone driving by and getting the occasional opportunity to see someone I know pass. They stop and grab a dog and it can potentially lead to a great day! Overall taste - yes they have it. Clearly they are geniuses. This is my kind of place. Parking - yup! They got this too. Hmmm.. what else? Cost? Not bad at all. I love any place I can feed my clan of 4 (including myself) for around $30-40. If you love the food, but aren't crazy about the atmosphere (as I read some other reviews) there is a small yet cute little park just a short walk away you can go sit and eat real fast. When my grandfather was ill and staying in Union Hospital (before it closed and before he passed) my family and I would take breaks in small groups walking here to grab a bite or just relax in the sun. Even if we only ordered a soda each, the staff never came over and asked us to move from the picnic table or even looked at us cross. They just let us sit and pass time. The Galloping Hill Grille takes me back to my childhood. It's a place that's been around for over 40 yrs. It's nothing fancy but they are known for their burgers , hot dogs and fries, and onion rings and much more. Over the years they have expanded their menu to include cheese steaks,& wraps.They are also known for their coconut chicken strips, and roast beef sandwiches. The GHG makes regular fries done several ways and waffle fries. Both are excellent! I enjoy their chili which can be topped on a hot dog, burger, or fries. You can tell the regulars because they step up to the window and know exactly how they want to place their custom order... The GHG is known for their birch beer! It's terrific and goes well with any food.. If that's not your bag, they have a liquor license and you can order a beer too... GHG has some seating inside. There are several tables outside for eating too. What is unique to see are several cars pulling up to the curb, park, people run in and get their order. They then go back to their car and scoff it down.. It like they can't get their hot dog fix fast enough! Then they pull away. There is a parking lot in the back with limited spaces. If you come on the weekend be prepared to wait..parking gets tough... The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating .Most people have their special way of ordering.. Double fried onions, hot peppers, extra cheese... My hot was very tasty. I ordered mine with kraut, relish, and got peppers. It came on a soft large chewy bun... I also ordered a cheese burger with extra fried onions to taste. Of course I had to have their original cut fries and a cold birch beer to wash it down. Both the dog and the chili were tasty & the dog was cooked perfectly. I had mine with mustard & onions - THE way to get them. One of my friends had a sandwich (can't remember - either corned beef or pastrami) that he said was good (with plenty of meat). Fries were not exceptional, but they were pretty good - crispy & not greasy. Galloping Hill is not in my area, but if I'm back down that way I'd stop in again. Good place. read more

I like these roadside eateries, just not...you know--in Five Points. Traffic is hell in this area, especially from 4:30pm and after. However, I was lucky enough to stop by a few hours ago when it was only partially busy and the motor mayhem wasn't as bad. Hot Dog w/ House Chili and Cheese: The hot dogs here are simply boiled--nothing fancy when it comes to preparing them. Their chili has a nice texture, while the cheese was nice and gooey. Flavor wise, the chili itself is pretty basic. It is not salty, herby, peppery--it just tastes like a lightly seasoned meaty chili. That's fine because the cheese is what adds the saltiness. Someone mentioned the hot dogs here are "gigantic." I personally think that's an exaggeration. They seem like normal-sized hot dogs on a homemade and slightly oversized bun. Hot Dog w/ Mustard, 'kraut, and Chopped Onions: I like it, but they added a little too much chopped onion and not enough 'kraut. The hot dog was lathered nicely with a generous amount of mustard. Other hot dogs I've tried are almost always juicy but excessively salty; the ones here are perfect--nice snap with each bite, too. Order a birch beer to go with your meal! Waffle Fries w/ Gravy and Cheese: I could snack on these all day if I had to! The waffle fries are nothing special, but the gravy was rich and flavorful, blending well with the melted cheddar cheese on top. You could also get the same thing but with crinkle fries (it's cheaper, too). You could either eat on the benches outside/near the counter or in the indoor dining area. The indoor dining area has quite a few tables (no booth seats) and a TV or two. I would definitely stop by again for a hot dog or try their wraps. My favorite options are sweet works, chopped raw onions, or the standard mustard. Make sure to wash it down with the birch beer too! The service has always been very quick. The menu is like a diner with crap food and lastly they now have PIZZA - what the hell! The outside is like being at the NJ boardwalk yet the building and bathrooms are disgusting. The Galloping Hill Grill has been a favorite hang-out spot for my mother since she was a teenager (I am 35 now, to give perspective without giving out her age). While the years have gone by, the place is still a fun burger-hop-style restaurant with famous hot dogs and hamburgers, and an ambiance that feels quite old school. But that is not to say the place has not changed at all. They have added indoor seating and are constantly refurbishing various parts of the restaurant to keep it up to date and constantly improving. The menu is centered around their famous hot dogs and hamburgers, but it has greatly expanded over the years with wraps, paninis, salads, and even some italian dinners. The service is quick, and you may be surprised how quickly food arrives after ordering (hot dogs sometimes take as little as 3 minutes) and at the generous portions. The staff is always friendly and drawn from the locals, so they know the history of the place and the standards that the owners have always tried to uphold. Galloping Hill is NOT fine dining. But is a restaurant with character which knows what it is good at and is always trying to improve.
