I never got anything bad there and your eyes are always bigger then you stomach at this place but it's okay cos bringing it home and eating the rest later perfect! I have been coming to "Five Points" for about 55 years. I have only one complaint...several years ago they switched their hot dog rolls to another brand. The new hotdog rolls are not good. They are too bready, thick, and boring. The original rolls had a sheen on the outside and were just perfect. When I asked one of the gentlemen behind the take-out counter why they got new rolls, he asked me, "What new rolls?" I guess that is the answer they were ordered to give when everyone asked that question. So I no longer buy the hot dogs. They have quite a few other excellent items on their menu; so many that I would never come close to trying them all. But once in a while when I get a craving for a good hot dog, I can never get one at GHI because of THE LOUSY ROLLS. read more

I absolutely love this restaurant. I live a distance away so when I'm in the area I always go and get grilled chicken Greek salad which is in my opinion the best around. The chicken is always cooked perfectly the salad is quite adequate compared to other places and it is delicious. The onion rings or another one of my favorite items. The staff are very friendly and very efficient. Today Veterans Day, I went there for my Greek grilled chicken salad and there was a sign that said show your military ID and you get free food. Well the once delicious hot dog roll has changed again. I got a dog with the works - mustard, kraut, hot and sweet relish but they put it on a regular hot dog bun. Huge menu. Way more than just hot dogs. The gyro was good. Burger was ok. Dogs are better than average although the bread to dog ratio is off. They use sub rolls in lieu of a smaller softer hot dog roll. You can order at the counter and seat yourself or do waitress service in their dining room. The Galloping Hill Inn is a classic, founded in the '20's at a confluence of roads aptly called Five Points. It's the quintessential hot dog and beer kind of place, and when I was a kid, it looked like something you'd find on some rural road -- whitewashed exterior with ordering windows on both the street- and parking lot sides of the building, and a porch with picnic benches. The ordering process is not for the hesitant: customers crowd the broad (8-10 foot wide) window to shout out their orders as the counter guys randomly call "next." Often chaotic, but efficient. There's also a small dining room with waitress service (as a small correction to Mark C.'s review, the true "indoor" seating has always been there. It's the covered seating next to the ordering window that's new, as the awning/enclosure was added just a few years ago.) Like most road joints, atmosphere is half the experience at Galloping Hill. Sadly, they appear to be going for a diner look now, with enamel walls, chrome accents and faux-pressed tin ceilings above the porches. Fortunately, my standard order is none the worse for wear: a 'complete' hot dog (kraut and mustard) and cheese fries with a generous amount of the tasty yellow stuff. Yum. This is a classic tube steak -- nice snap when you bite into it, no gimmicks, though in my opinion, the roll is better suited to a cheesesteak or chicken parm than to a hot dog. Everything always tastes fresh, and given the traffic the place gets, nothing sits for long, anyway. Five Points is a very busy intersection, so you can't really blame the Galloping Hill guys for moving the transactional part of the business to the back of the building for safety. When my sister and I first started going there in the mid-eighties, we'd eat our meals on the street-side porch and count the near-miss accidents. While we never actually saw a collision, we heard one once, first the screech of tires and crash of car against car, then the very loud string of obscenities expelled by one of the drivers. When this place was known as "Peterson's" it was the best independent, and well known, fast food restaurant in the area. Now it's an eyesore. Personally, I can't figure out what this design is supposed to be. It looks like the contractor used left over material and wasn't paid or didn't finish . They've been around since 1925, so nothing I say in this review will affect how they do business or likely influence their patrons, but nevertheless, here's my review: I really disliked my hot dogs (got mustard, kraut, relish). The dogs themselves had snap, but were quite bland. I mean, seriously, no taste. I think I would have preferred a supermarket dog. The buns were WAY TOO LARGE for the size of the hot dog. Seriously, it was like a single hot dog on an 8 inch hero roll. Plus, I came on a Sunday night, and the buns were clearly a day or two old and slightly stale. I've known about this legendary hot dog stand for decades. I'm pretty sure I came here as a teenager, but have little recollection of that probably drunken event 40 years ago. I passed the place by on my way back from a job and simply had to give it a try. I ordered 2 dogs with kraut and fries. The dog may have been good. It had a nice snap to it, but it was hard to appreciate the hot dog under the giant pillow of a roll it was served with along with a huge mound of sauerkraut. I felt as if I was eating a sauerkraut sandwich with hints of hot dog. Seriously, if you have a decent dog, make it the star. I must admit, for most of my childhood, I took this place for granted. I was spoiled when my dad would take me for a classic cheeseburger, tasty cheesesteak or superb chili dog multiple times a month. When I went away to college, I began to crave Galloping Hill and the convenience of having a huge menu of reasonably priced (and, more importantly, delicious) foods at my beckon call. Even today, whenever I come home to Union for a break from my job in DC, my friends and I always go for a buffalo chicken wrap (best I've ever had) and waffle fries (yes, I am friends with Matt S. - it's not a coincidence). If you're looking for why people laud the hotdogs here, I suggest trying the "Sweet Works" or "Hot Works" which has kraut, mustard and sweet or hot relish. The hotdogs may not stand alone as the greatest around, but with these toppings, they're hard to beat, and in my opinion, so is Galloping Hill. I highly suggest trying the buffalo chicken wrap and waffle fries - it's the goods. Oh and bring straight cash homey, and one more thing - try to avoid the guy with the mustache, he will yell at you if you're indecisive. He may have made me cry once. read more

They are known for the hotdogs, they have been here for 70 plus years I believe. What you may not know is they probably have one of the best damn cheese steaks in Union County. The bread is A+ and makes the sandwich perfect. Prices are cheap - I only wish they were open later (I think they close around 9). A few important things to know: Beers are ridicilously cheap and the largest is 32ox pickle-like-plastic jar They have an indorr restaurant and are in the process of expanding the front area to also inclose (as of 12/17/13). There is a guy that works the take-out counter - he wears glasses, maybe 50 years old. He's been here as long as I can remember. Know what you are ordering when you step up to the counter, or he will easily get pissed and make it known. They say a picture's worth a thousand words. Well, Galloping Hill has been photographed on the news, for TV Shows and to show off their classic cars on their Monday night car show, but there are no words to describe the greatness this place. The hot dogs have a great snap to them and go great with a birch beer, both of which they are most known for. Their cheesestakes are not as frequently ordered but if you're not in the mood for a hot dogs, these are the way to go and are as good, if not better, then the hot dogs themselves. Pizza is a new item to the list and at $8 for a pie, it is a great value. The waffle fries are out of this world, too and the workers there have that Jersey, blue collar swagger to them (a bonus). The backside has undergone renovations over the years. When I first used to go, the back side was covered, but opened, so it was not the best place to sit during the winter. However, now they did a great job closing in the space. The kitchen has expanded, it's climate controlled and the decor is nice (*almost* too nice for this place). The outdoor tables are excellent during the summer too. I have two minor negatives about this place, but they're not enough to firmly keep it out of five stars. The first is that the hamburgers are average. They're not bad, but unless you go there a few times, I wouldn't get them at first. The second is the service. Some may consider the swagger a positive, some may not, but they get your order right and help you along the way. I have been there plenty of times. How many? Enough to have a stack full of their cups that reached my waist in high school. Overall, it's a wonderful place and would not recommend a better casual restaurant in Union County! read more
