I first ate here as a little kid, back in the 40's. This place defines what chili dogs are all about. Two or four chili dogs and some orange pop and you are in heaven. I live in Oregon now but I was back East some years ago and made a special trip just to eat those chili dogs again. If I can drive 3,000 miles for those dogs you can drive across town. I was passing through Plainfield and pulled up to Texas Weiner 1 and the lights were on and I had to stop. The first thing I noticed was how clean everything was inside. It would make my Italian grandmother proud. Just wow! Not many places take pride in their business but, it shows here. The hot dog was ordered as shown "1 Up and a small Pepsi". It was grilled to perfection by the muscle man behind the counter. Everybody was polite and I would come back again but next time order "Two Up!!!" Well want to try another spot on this strip but it was closed ,So I ended up here . The place appeared very clean and updated . They had a very small menu , I ordered California Chesse burger , it was not flavorful or even fresh as they make it seem I didn't get raw onions like every Cailf burger I ever had ! The cook appeared Greek and the counter staff Spanish . Staff was easy to deal with but the burger is not good just ok a step up from Burger King . Price were not that great above average for the quality of food . One time visit for I !!! read more

I used to buy texas wieners dogs for $20 cents when I was a kid. I lived on Roosevelt ave two blocks away. The hot dogs had snap and were tasty. The chili sauce was delicious. BEST HOTDOGS!!!! I remember living in Plainfield as a little girl in the very late 90's/early 90's and my parents would take me to get these delicious dogs! Now 32 years later, I still think about these hotdogs and I remember the distinct delicious taste! I visited Plainfield once since I moved in 1992 and was able to grab a texas weiner, that was like 20 years ago. It makes my heart smile to see the restaurant still open. I've been coming to Texas Wiener since I was a kid.The CHILI HOT DOGS are just as I remember them. The hot dogs snap when u bite into them, the chili is thick and the onions are sweet... I always order two because one is never enough.. TEXAS WIENER IS A CASH ONLY PLACE! The area has changed over the years but not this Texas Wiener. The minute you walk in your eyes immediately go to the walls. There are pictures of the owner going back over 30 years. This place reminds me of a time warp..There are a few tables and a counter. I ate at the counter because I like talking with the staff.. The staff is very friendly, and when not busy always ready to reminisce about the old days. I don't drink soda so I decided to have a coffee. It was very good and it was made perfectly to my liking.... If you're looking for something fancy then this is not the place for you, but if you want a really good hotdog then by all means stop in for a couple of good dogs. Texas Wiener also makes cheeseburgers and other food. I haven't tried any of them because I come strictly for the chili dogs.. There is a metered parking lot 1 block before Texas Wiener on the same side.. I recommend coming during the day... I used to frequent the Texas Wiener on rt. 22 , but sadly like everything else that has closed. I will definitely be returning when I get my urge for a good hotdog . read more

My mom , me and my 2 sisters would go there often and pick up hot dogs to take home. This was in the late 1950's through the 1960's. A man would be in the window at the grill with hot dogs lined all the way up his arm. With the other hand he would put on the mustard, onions and chili on each one and take 2 off at a time and wrap them. Our car would smell like them for days. Great memories. This hot dog joint is like a time capsule to hot dog's hey days in the U.S. via European immigration. That's what's bemusing about this all, since the entire area as I know it, is now South and Central American and black. The hot dogs and hamburgers are essentially the epitome of flat grilled goodness. They will rival Gray's Papaya and Papaya King any day of the week. The hot dogs have that superb snappy casing and when the guy manning the griddle cooks them, they end up perfect everytime. I personally have not witnessed any safety issues unless you mean to say that "safe" to you means "only white people roll in an area". Additionally if you look closer there are some fantastic taquerias in the area where you will discover tongue tacos topped with awesome pico de gallo and limes as well as mouth watering pupusas from the El Salvadorean joints that are in the neighborhood. You will like their food better than any chain restaurant around as its cooked to order and was not microwaved in a bag like at Red Lobster. read more

Hands down this is the best Texas Wieners in the area when it cones to food, but thats where it stops. It was a little after midnight on a Monday, The customer service was horrible, the owner was on a break, and we were waited on my a spanish man. We ordered 5 hit dogs, a cheesesteak, orders of fries, and drinks. My sister took one sip and didnt like the fruit punch, so politely asked can she exchange it for pepsi, this man had the nerve to say i already gave you that. This is the first time this has ever happened anywhere in my life, since when do a restaurant deny swapping out a beverage for sonething else? We understand yall dont do refills,thats not what we were asking, but simply exchanging a drink for something else to satisfy a paying customer is a request tgat should have simply been fulfilled, especially when it was a large group of us spending money giving you business!! And on top of that,the other texas wieners in the area does refills, so whats up with that? So we wound up just telling the guy well pay for the soda if its thst much of a big deal! The owner wound up coming in afterwards when we were getting ready to leave, we didnt tell him about our problem with his staff because we didnt want to jeapordize anyones job, but the owner was very very nice, had people skills and great personality,the spanish guy can learn from him, im sure if the owner was there initially when we asked to simply exchange the drink he would have taken care of us, but this restaurant need to have a talk with their staff to work on their custoner service skills asap!! read more

There were a couple of folks inside the noticeably older joint including a local cop sitting at the counter. Got a basic hot dog with mustard. Not bad but certainly not the best around. The worst morning staff ever. No customer service skills at all. The coffee cup was so hot and they refuse to double the cup unless I pay $1 for an empty cup. Why should I pay $1 for an empty cup when that is what I pay for the coffee. I will never go back in that place. read more
