I'm so happy I finally got to try gadani! It was pretty poppin' on a Saturday night, but I still got to try the lychee and strawberry ice cream flavors. I preferred the lychee to the strawberry, though I thought both were pretty average. In the end, I got the egg puff + ice cream combo, with a churro egg puff, vanilla ice cream, caramel drizzle and cookie (aka graham cracker) crumbs. It was ready pretty quickly and perfectly instagrammable. Although it sounds like a toothache waiting to happen, i thought it was really yummy and surprisingly not too sweet for so much ice cream and cinnamon sugar. If you are more of a moderate dessert eater than I am, you could probably split it with a friend =) read more

Shockingly, it's not so easy to find a quality spot-hitting dose of chocolate for a mid-afternoon craving in downtown Berkeley [except at Almare Gelato, mmmm]. This chocolate waffle is the answer. It's perfectly chocolatey, like a good brownie, but also has the mix of crispness and chew that makes an egg waffle great. A++. But there's a trap: DON'T fall for the ice cream. Sure, it's lovely to look at / take photos of. But it's honestly just not that great of ice cream (it's Breyer's). Do yourself a favor and go a la carte. Just walk your waffle a block to Almare and get some excellent gelato to dress up that waffle! read more

It was my first (and probably last) time and I went with the employee's recommendation: Matcha waffle with black sesame ice cream. It was ~$8.50 but it was almost big enough for a meal. Gadani is an adorable little shop! My cousins and I were in the area to celebrate a birthday and wanted to stop by somewhere for desert. We saw that this location was within walking distance and had pretty high ratings, so we decided to give it a try. The employees were super nice! There were 6 of us and they helped each of us sample their ice creams and figure out the best combination of ice cream and egg puff that was tasty. I remember picking cookies n creme ice cream with churro egg puff and Oreo topping. It was quite delicious! But nothing super wow-ing. I will give bonus points for the fact that the egg puff did taste like churro! I thought that was pretty cool. Otherwise, it's just ice cream and egg puff together. They have a cardboard-like wrap around the egg puff to help keep it altogether and prevent spilling, however, my cousin's ice cream started melting early and leaked through the bottom. She was the only one with that issue though for the rest of us were okay. As for the location, they have very little seating area inside the store and a few tables outside. They also have a cute aesthetic wall to take photos. Don't come in a big group unless you are okay with sitting outside. There were about 10 other people inside the store and it was really cramped in the location. There was a bench that is close to where you pick up your food but if there is a lot of people, there really isn't a place to stand to wait for your food. Overall: Good experience. I've been disappointed a lot with egg waffles lately so Gadani was a pleasant surprise! I got the ice cream combo with the Gadani original waffle and black sesame ice cream. There are two complementary toppings so I added the matcha powder and whipped cream. The combination turned out to be really good. Appreciate that the egg waffle was freshly made and that they were extremely generous with the matcha powder. Black sesame ice cream was amazing. Total was about $8, which when shared with a friend because the dessert was HUGE, is a really decent price. There were other interesting ice cream flavors I would like to try out next time like the lavender ice cream so I'll definitely be back. Gadani is an awesome tea and dessert spot! I can't believe I have overlooked and walked past this place so many times yet never tried it. I went here last week to get a hot tea and waffle dessert (because Happy Lemon was too crowded) and so glad I did. The cashier/server greeted me right away when I entered and I opted to order through their self-service kiosk. The hot tea tasted just right and was just what I needed on a cold evening. The chocolate waffle tasted amazing and satisfied my cravings for sweets. The waffle was pretty big and I couldn't finish it so I brought it home. The space inside is a little small, but they do have a couple of in door seating available and two outdoor tables. The music was chill and not too loud, so a great spot to chat with a friend or maybe grab a waffle dessert with your date after exploring Downtown Berkeley. People seem to find the decor cute as many customers took selfies and made sure to get the background in. I will definitely come back to Gadani to try more of their teas and desserts. read more

Very cute and small ice cream shop - lots of college students. Don't get me wrong the place is super cute, but construction going on and only street parking (some roads are one way) it's kinda hard to get around. Seems like taking BART in would be easier. It's like a better tasting eggette with ice cream and toppings. Some flavors are from loard's so, it's kinda like oh, well I can make this at home kinda feel? I love love love this place! First customers of the day, we came in a few minutes after the store opened at noon and they were still setting up. The girl on shift was super super nice and helpful! I really appreciate good service and a friendly attitude. The interior is as cute as the photos you'll see on yelp. The atmosphere is very cute, however there is limited seating inside. It is on a block with lots of shop though, so we didn't mind walking around while eating our dessert. Came in earlier today, intrigued by the minimalistic decor and well, it's always a good time for ice cream. I sampled four flavors before settling on butter pecan and they said it was one of their best selling ice cream too. While butter pecan was good, I am sure there are more chocolate snobs like me who would like to have better chocolate ice cream options. Come on now, don't go wrong with chocolate. The combo (I got double chocolate waffle + cookie crumbs topping) is definitely the best deal price wise and makes most sense as they specialize in waffles and you could get just the ice cream elsewhere. The ice cream scoop REALLY needs to be more generous (1.5 scoops according to current standards) or it becomes hard to justify coming here more than once. Plus the waffle feels a little dry in the beginning. It gets really addicting when you finally reach the portion with ice-cream and before you're satisfied the ice cream runs out! However, I quite like the chewiness of the waffles and don't mind the lack of crunch at all. Either that or please reduce the price and make the cup wider/shorter so it's easier to eat. Love the chairs/stools - so comfy! And thank you to the staff for being so nice! 4 stars because I am hoping the recommendations by people are taken seriously as this place has great potential to cause a dent in my wallet! I wouldn't have knew this place existed until my sister told me about it. We decided to stop by because we never had egg puff with ice cream before and the place looked instagram worthy. The place was very clean with minimal decoration. You can take pictures of your food in front of the leaf decoration near the front. There is not much seating area. I love their mini water cooler area! Customer service was nice. We shared the original egg puff with matcha ice cream and rose petal topping. The wait was about 10 minutes. The egg puff was really good, very soft and chewy. The ice cream was your typical matcha flavor. The rose petal matched with the whole combo. I felt extra eating the petals. Such a cute hipster Ice cream shop. Honestly at night, it was confusing to where the front of the store was. The entrance is on Southbound Shattuck from University Ave. They serve some pretty COOL ice cream flavor but I was most excited about the egg puff ice cream combo. Pro tip: READ THE MENU!. I was a bit confused on ordering but basically if you decide on the combo, you choose a flavor of egg puff, ice cream flavor, and toppings. I ended up getting a churro egg puff with matcha ice cream and condensed milk topping. The "churro" was basically the egg puff slathered with cinammon sugar. Green team ice cream was slapped on top of the egg puffs and drizzled with condensed milk. The egg puffs just tasted like eggs puff with cinammon sugar but I was surprised how well the cinnamon complimented the green tea ice cream so you should definitely try that combo of flavors once. Finally a HK Style Waffle place in East Bay and right in the heart of downtown! My first experience was going to Eggloo in New York City, so I am happy to see this type of dessert have a home here in the Bay Area. FOOD: Red Bean Ice Cream, Wafer, Original Flavor Waffle (it's a waffle flavor, several people asked us what original tasted like ...). Since they make the waffle fresh to order, it's much better. They do let it cool so the ice cream does not melt instantly. Overall, the flavors that came together were very tasty and a great evening dessert to wrap up time with friends. SERVICE: Very good! Overall, I wish Gadani had a bit more option with regards to toppings. At places like Eggloo, they have more toppings to have pops of color and make it more visually appealing and also more fun to eat. From there, you can get a cup, cone or in a egg waffle. The flavors also change pretty often which is awesome. My personal favorite is the black sesame. If they have it when you come definitely try it. All the ice cream is super creamy..AND does not melt fast like other places that have super creamy ice cream...aka....perfection. There are also various lattes and drinks that you can try. Location: Right next to BART...like right next to it. A charming, small hole in the wall mini dessert spot tucked away on Shattuck, the egg puffs & ice cream combo reeled me in, especially on a hot day. Aesthetically pleasing and worth of the 'gram or any photo ops, the egg puffs & ice cream taste wise also don't disappoint. A definite slide through, especially if you want to treat yourself! Waffle Combo ($7.45)- I ordered it with the Matcha green tea egg puffs, with lychee ice cream and the honey butter waffle cookie. The lychee ice cream had little lychee bits floating throughout the ice cream, but it didn't overwhelm the ice cream- and I was satisfied with it. The matcha egg puffs were also really good, though a part of me wishes the matcha taste was stronger or if they had matcha powder also added on- but still solid egg puffs. Though the price is kinda up there for egg puffs and ice cream, I would have to say it was worth it for the amount you're getting. My only minor complaint is when the ice cream melts onto the egg puffs on the bottom, it gets a little messy because the bottom egg puffs get soggier. It's also is kind of messy eating the 2 egg puffs and ice cream together (I pick apart the egg puffs with my hands though), so I'd pick up a few napkins if you pick apart the egg puffs by hand because the ice cream will get all over your fingers. However, the containment unit they provide you with for the waffle combo is nice, as I didn't notice any ice cream leakage, so that's a plus. The inside has a nice modern wooden interior, but there's really not room for large groups to sit here. Aside from a small window view with a few stools and 2 small tables outside of Gadani to sit, its really not ideal for large parties to come and sit down. The interior also features their infamous 'Gadani' wall, which is faux leaf garnishing, and worth of all of your aesthetic photo background needs. The girl working there- Vicky was really sweet and was really helpful with recommendations/asking what looked best aesthetically and tasted the best together mixture wise. I was confused by the toppings and she was really helpful showing me what they have, plus she let me sample as many flavors as I needed before choosing my ice cream flavor. Gadani gets a high 4 from me. A small dessert gem in Berkeley, I wouldn't sleep on Gadani and I'd be back! For the amount and quality you're getting from the egg puffs and the ice cream, I would say though the waffle combo was worth it though it seems to be a little high in price. The whole eating process of the ice cream and egg puffs together was slightly messy, but nothing too bothersome. But most definitely a recommend, especially if you love egg puffs & ice cream! read more
