On a recent trip to Buffalo, a friend and I decided to check this place out. I've been to Buffalo many, many times but have never really "explored" the city much, nor had I ever had Buffalo wings there, so I thought, 'what better time than now?' Gabriel's Gate was in an area I'd never been to so it seemed like a good idea, you know, to get to see the city a little... It was surprisingly dead for a Thursday night.
I did a little research and Anchor Bar seemed like its head got too big and Duff's...well, we have Duff's here and something tells me that a franchise of this size probably does things pretty much the same (or at least similar) across the board so I didn't see the need to use up a food opp there. The other places didn't get such great reviews--YES, YELPers, I was lead to Gabriel's Gate by YOU!
The way some of the earlier reviewers were going on, you'd think catching an airborne illness or kooties off the seats were commonplace here at G's G! Not that I was going to let that deter me...I was on a mission after all...it's just a dingy-lit bar with moose heads and other things hanging on the wall, whose majority of patrons seem to have a lot of facial hair. I didn't find it dirty, but then maybe the lighting masked the scariness? Whatever the case, my friend and I weren't starving but just came from a show and needed to cross this wings thing off our list so we ordered a few things to munch on, having high expectations from one of the best wing places in town.
What is up with the food here?? We ordered two kinds of wings: buffalo and one other that was mentioned in Yelp. They weren't bad but nothing spectacular, as in, I could get wings just as good around here. They came with veggie sticks and the usual blue cheese dip which had ZERO flavour--that was odd. We also split a Delaware? Avenue sandwich as the chicken, bacon and cheese combination sounded like it had some good things to offer. The grilled chicken was a decent size, and the meal itself was pretty big for two people who weren't that hungry. But the funny thing was that the sandwich, like the blue cheese dip, didn't taste like anything! It wasn't just bland, it just tasted like NOTHING! If you asked me to name a food that has no taste, no flavour whatsoever, I'd be pretty hard-pressed to come up with anything--even water has a taste! I couldn't understand how the sandwich was void of any flavour! I love bar food and even if the food here wasn't to turn out to be the best I've ever had, I was sure it would still make for decent bar food--NO CHANCE! It was really strange but it is what it is...I wish I could comment on other food items, but that's all we had, along with a few cocktails which were fine.
Service was nonchalant, I don't think anyone gave a rat's ass that there was anyone in there, except for those moments when they'd bring us our food which was actually cold by the time we got it.
Things became more entertaining after we left. We stood around outside talking when a drunk transvestite came along and chatted us up, insisting she sing us some Whitney Houston songs while telling us her life story. All that uproar seemed to gain the attention of another drunkard, possibly homeless and totally incoherent, and before you knew it, a crowd formed around us. I have no idea what part of town that was but it reminded me a little of The Annex, with bars and such along a one or two block stretch. I guess it must have been some kind of downtown, as it seemed to be where all the action was. read more
