When it comes to the local Buffalo specialty of chicken wings, every local has a strong opinion as to where to find the best. I visit the city every year in the fall, and I am still trying all of the wing places that have been recommended. The latest on my list was Doc Sullivan's, a very, VERY local watering hole. This is the kind of place that makes you immediately remember that you are absolutely not from here, but in the best possible way. Doc's is a historic, no-frills neighborhood pub smack in the heart of South Buffalo's Irish Heritage district. The second we walked in as clearly obvious outsiders, the entire room of rough-and-tumble regulars seemed to pause their conversations, turn towards the door, and stare at us. Even the bartender (who also doubled as the host and our waiter) clocked us immediately with a cheerful, "Hey visitors!" It was hilarious and broke the awkwardness we were starting to feel. Everyone was incredibly nice and welcoming once the moment passed, but it was clear we stood out from the regular crowd. If you have an aversion to dive bars, this is not the place for you because Doc's is not fancy. It's well-worn and smells like Fabuloso cleaner mixed with stale cigarette smoke and old beer. I was surprised at how clean the place was, but it does have that dive bar smell and feel. I felt like I'd walked onto a movie set because this place screams Buffalo, and does so loudly and proudly. I'm not a fan of chicken wings, but my hubby is. Food-wise, he ordered a half dozen of the famous Smitty Wings at the suggestion of the bartender, which come coated in the house's unique spiced butter sauce along with a half dozen with hot sauce. He liked the Smitty wings fine, but preferred the classic hot Buffalo wings, which he said had legit heat and were "more than decent." Not his all-time favorite wings, but still tasty and meaty enough to earn his respect. I went with the buffalo chicken sandwich, which was massive. It was a fried chicken breast patty on a super soft, fresh roll with lettuce, tomato, and onions, tossed in a mild Buffalo sauce that had just enough heat for a timid spice girl like me. The quality was good, but not great, and it was basically the same chicken sandwich you can get at dozens of places around town (it was very similar to the same menu item at the Anchor Bar, for example). The fries were nothing special, and they tasted like regular old french fries you'd get at your local deli. They were freshly fried, hot and crispy, and we both appreciated that malt vinegar was already on the table. We had a good experience at Doc Sullivan's, but agreed that we would not go out of our way to eat here again. I wouldn't call it a must-do for foodies, but I'm still really glad we went. While the food wasn't all that memorable, it felt like a true local Buffalo experience that you don't get at polished, tourist-friendly spots. Stopped by on a Saturday after checking out the Eternal Flames for some wings since the reviews sounded good. The smitty wings just tasted like mild buffalo sauce and the honey cajun was pretty good. My issue was with the "ranch" sauce because it tasted like straight horseradish and every bite left a bitter aftertaste. The poutine fries would've been good if they didn't make the gravy with the power of the pacific ocean with how salty it is. I was really looking forward to this stop of our 8 stop tour. We got medium and beef on weck wings . The neighborhood was one of the nicest of our whole trip. The restaurant was really cool .... But The wings tasted liked they fried in the same oil as fish and it was just of putting. I wish I could have gotten past that but it was in my mind as I was trying the wings. Parking wad okay, we got lucky and found a spot on the street. Place is extremely loud, so don't come here if looking to have a nice dinner. Our server was nice. We ordered the pizza logs - and they were in the fryer too long bc they were so hard on the outside, no flavor on the inside. My Mom and I both ordered French Onion Soup. It was alright, but I've had better. When my Mom unrolled her silverware, she found a fly on her fork, folded in with the napkin. I've been to Doc Sullivan's MANY times. Smash burger Wednesdays, South Buffalo pub crawls, Buffalo wing tour stop, etc. They're my personal choice for Top 3 wing places in all of Buffalo - best flanked by an order of garlic parm 40 fries. Always consistent, always delivering a solid menu of first rate pub grub. What I hadn't done - until last Sunday's Bills-Chiefs game - was treat myself to their amazing Bills' game day experience. Wow! What an event. Quick side note: Had a large group of friends doing a family reunion in Buffalo. When they asked about attending the Allen-Mahomes showdown in person, I told them it would be technically possible, but likely VERY expensive. AND, the 80+ year old matriarch might balk at having to stand for the entire game. Plan B? We also tried the mac and cheese - this is shareable. Starting with the mac and cheese - awesome with lots of cheese and it's burnt a little on top which makes it. We order wings and fingers. Hubby can't eat wings while he has dental surgery going on. He order the beef on weck sauce and I order the 40 sauce on my wings. Unfortunately, they put the sauces on the wrong order. That is why they got 4 stars. But they made it up and sent us the order correctly. Both sauces were excellent and need to come back to try other ones. Group of friends from Cleveland decided to go all-in on a weekend tour around Buffalo, of the Wing Trail restaurants. This was stop #5. Definitely a local bar hangout where folks come to watch their sports and get their eats and drinks on. We felt the need for carbs along with this round of wings, so we ordered both mac-n-cheese and fries along with our order. Their mac-n-cheese was made with spiral pasta and appeared to be backed for a final crispy topping to the dish. The fries we ordered were called 40 fries and might have been everyone's favorite dish on the entire trip! The crispy fries were topped and coated with a buttery mix of Italian style seasonings and garlic and everyone sopped that garlicky sauce up like it was the last thing on earth. Truly heavenly!!! For our wing platter, we ordered 10 Smitty style wings (their own signature blend of a more traditional Buffalo style sauce and a mix of buttery spices...and the higher up you go in heat levels the less of the Smitty seasoning is present (so we ordered medium) and 10 beef on weck wings. The Smitty style wings were tasty, but the beef on weck seasoning mixed into a tangy, creamy style wings sauce was totally unique and delicious! Would definitely order them again. Well, let me tell you a little story! My wife and I are in Buffalo at the tail end of our trip to the Falls, and we have a few hours to kill before we go to the airport. So what happens is we happen to drive through the "Irish Heritage District" of Buffalo, gift shops, restaurants and pubs, even The Buffalo Irish Center! We see Doc Sullivan's and decide that's the place we'll go. When we get back they're getting ready for a wedding across the street, we go inside and there are people dressed up eating and drinking. We ask, "pre-wedding warm up?" "No," was the answer, "that's the funeral from this morning, the wedding reception is after in our banquet room!" I told her they would just be the same as we get anywhere but she insisted so I got online and started searching. Doc Sullivan's is an Irish pub in an Irish area and we love pubs like that anyway and had to get some Guinness to drink. Got maybe the best, crispiest wings I ever had and they and the fries were piping hot. We got dry with two different sauces for dipping, she got hot buffalo and I got the hot 40, they were both awesome. I saw the sever bringing a wedge salad by which looked so good I stupidly ordered one. It was great but most of it went in a to go box as there was so much food, they give you a huge basket of fries!
