We had no plans for what to do for dinner the night we went to Fuoco Matto. It was right next door to our hotel and thought we would just give it a try. What great luck, we got in, we were seated and were immediately served some great wine (total teaser). The wait staff was very tolerant of our English. The place was not too noisy. We could speak easily and I could definitely hear everyone at the table with ease. My friend and I split the ravioli and a steak. It was the perfect combination. The ravioli sauce was excellent with the ravioli but when the steak was dipped into the sauce THAT was absolute perfection. Seriously, this was a great combination. My husband enjoyed a rigatoni dish which he thoroughly enjoyed and my son had the rib eye which he never offered to share. For dessert we split the tiramisu. This was a HUGE portion and we enjoyed it thoroughly especially with the lemon cello which was served to us complimentary after our meal. This was one of our most favorite restaurants in all of Florence. My wife actually found this restaurant on her first visit to Italy. She originally went here simply because it was next-door to the hotel. However, she fell in love with the place. On her return visit (and my first), I also quickly fell in love with this restaurant. The food and service are both fantastic. The menu has enough variety that we ended up eating here three times over the course of two days. Clearly, the pasta is extremely fresh and absolutely wonderful. However, when we went in for lunch one day, we only ordered a pizza. Keep in mind that Italian pizzas are not your typical American pizzas that are covered in fattening pepperoni and sausage. Italian pizzas come with fresher ingredients and are prepared in brick ovens. Most of them will have fresh mozzarella on them as well. They are also known for their cuts of meat. Their "Tomahawk" is good but not great. It is not as good as some of the steaks I've eaten in various steakhouses in Houston, but then again, I'm comparing it to Texas beef. If you do order the Tomahawk, you need to split it with someone. It is a HUGE portion (see photo). It's good but in comparison, not great. Their staff is amazing. Very friendly and made us feel welcomed. They also will give you a complimentary after dinner chaser of limoncello. They also gave us a complimentary taste of their Vecchio Amaro del Capo. I liked it enough that I bought some at a local store and brought it home to Houston with me. A tip about tipping: Tipping in Europe when at a restaurant is optional. It is appreciated but not a requirement. If you do tip, you do not need to leave the American standard of 15-20%. A tip of a few Euros is greatly appreciated by the staff. Bottom line - Delicious pasta dishes and pizza. The beef is good but not the best I've had. The staff was amazing. An easy five-stars. read more

When we travel, we like to try to find a spot to eat that's in the neighborhood we're staying. This is how we came upon Fuoco Matto. If you're looking for a little more modern take on typical Florence fair, then Fuoco Matto is a great option. To begin, I would definitely make a reservation a day or so in advance. We dropped in around 7:00pm (a little earlier than we normally would) without a reservation, and they squeezed us in with the caveat that we gave up our table around 8:30pm. They've got a unique menu allowing you to try anything from meats and cheeses to pasta to meat and seafood, all with a modern twist. Fuoco Matto was our first dinner in Florence and it set the stage for a week of very tasty food! Atmosphere is definitely hipster versus "traditional trattoria" but I liked it. It was recommended by our AirBnb host and nearby to where we stayed. We were brought complimentary prosecco and a snack to start, and the prosecco was good enough we ordered a bottle to share (wine prices reasonable). For an app, we had crostini toscana aka chicken livers pate - I do love liver pate and really liked these. The pate may not look the nicest but the flavor was rich and delicious (and not overly liver-y if you're concerned about that kind of thing). For a main, the Mister had cacio pepe ravioli which had a bit of liquorice powder on it - an interesting take on something simple. I had a pizza with salsiccia, burrata and broccoli rabe and it was everything I wanted it to be. The crust was airy and chewy, the sausage was full of fennel and the broccoli gave a nice bitter kick. You really need it. Otherwise you'll sit outside. But maybe, just maybe they might be able to move you inside later, into the much calmer and quieter indoors. Make no mistake, it's bustling, hopping inside because it will be packed, every table full. As it should be, because this place is amazing. We got so lucky and were able to move inside. The Tuscan steak was our main course m, for three people. And it was the best one we had in Florence. Quite literally the best. Melted in our mouths. So full of flavor. COST: €18 (Sliced Beef With Sauteed Chard) ~€6 (Tiramisu) Rome didn't really impress on just about every category outside of their historic sites (food included)... Florence on the other hand though impressed and exceeded every expectation I had and definitely single handedly saved my week in Italy for me. I knew I was arriving to Florence pretty late from Montepulciano so I had called this restaurant to make reservations in advance. I met some people at my hostel and they wanted to come to dinner as well. I called to adjust my reservation to which Fouco Matto happily did. Most Italian cities did not have a concept of hospitality like us Americans do here in the US, but Florence was most definitely the most American and tourist friendly of them all. We started our dinner here with FREE sparkling wine and flatbread pizza samples. For dinner, I went with the sliced beef option since I was pretty hungry from my travels. The meat was cooked perfectly and tasted pretty good too. You can definitely tell the filets and bigger steaks were their specialty. The highlight of the meal was definitely the TIRAMISU though! The single reason I came in here for. After being ripped off by some pastry shop in Rome with an expensive, dry as hell "tiramisu", I was very cautiously optimistic for this one. Their tiramisu was god damn heavenly. Their version is mostly cream than the pastry part which I appreciated. It was super creamy and not too sweet. It was perfect. I think the price was around 6 euro for a 6 by 3 inch serving. I inhaled it and can definitely still remember what it tasted like. As if the wonderful dinner was not enough, they also served us free limoncello shots at the end of the meal. I had some friends visit Florence this past week... I had the anchioves and capers one for 6.5 euros and my friend got the marghetta pizza for 5.5 euros. While we waited, they gave us a free appetizer which I was so surprised about. It was a small fold up pastry, reminds me of a marghetta pizza that's folded. It was excellent and a surprise. The pizza itself was good, very thin but nothing spectacular. Been in Italy for about a week and getting the hang of it. While food is amazing in most places - if you are a tourist some places will pull out a menu with "special prices" charging you more than Italian speaking folk. Also, the customer service we are used to is not a thing here... With the exception of this place! This restaurant had one of the best service experiences we had even with little to no Italian skills. The meal started with complimentary wine and cheese & tomato sandwiches. They were good! We were hungry so we got a pasta dish each and an anchovy pizza to share - all of which were cooked perfectly. The pizza was large and I felt stuffed after finishing my half. Anchovies were nowhere to be found though - only 4 pieces for the pie. The meal ended with a complimentary glass of limoncello. I love the drink. It was the first time we tried it here. Total cost of the entire meal - 30 euro! Tip: Make sure to make reservations. They fill up for dinner quickly and some seats may or may not be open at the bar. Parking outside is limited. read more

Really really really close to (same as?) Neapolitan pizza. And we just returned from Naples so we have recent experience. Chewy charred dough, as required, and creative toppings, though spouse consistently chooses the classic margherita. Lovely courteous staff even though we didn't have a reservation. Got crowded very quickly on a Wednesday night but luckily we arrived just after it opened and we were only two, so they seated us. Highly recommend reservation. During the course of my two months abroad, this was the best food and restaurant experience my friends and I had (keep in mind we were on a college student budget). The quality and speed of service was fantastic compared to most places we tried in Italy. We arrived on a weekday a few minutes after opening and were seated immediately. Complimentary wine and a cheese, tomato, and bread appetizer were brought out immediately after ordering. We ended up getting two pasta dishes, two pizzas, two cappuccinos, and a bottle of wine, which came to about €55. The food was generously portioned and the best Italian food we had in Rome, Firenze, and Pisa. To top it off, a complimentary small glass of limonchello is provided as a digestive aid at the end of your meal! Make a reservation if you want to come later on in the evening as it filled up very quickly. Also, not many of the staff members spoke English; though, they were quick to direct me to someone who did.
