I was surprised with the high reviews, first glance shows old and worn out, a small basic menu, curious music hall in the back certain to blast the ears, and compared to the modern mainstream reformed hipster java joint, this is the opposite. With a second glance quickly realized the one man band barista is friendly and threw together a funky mocha quickly and for much less than other Chicago area caffeine cups cost! I had a good sip on my way home despite a lot of ice getting stuck in the straw. He suggested I try the almond dessert buns next door so I did. Also a big win! read more

We googled for dog friendly coffee shop in villa park, and this place had good reviews so we gave it a shot. The owner was so welcoming, service was top notch! We ordered latte, frosting mocha and coffee. Everything came out good, coffee wasn't too strong and sweet. It was good. The owner came to our table and brought little complimentary bakery from next door. It was delicious! We asked for puppy cup(whip cream )for our puppies and they are so happy! I wanna go where everybody knows my name! This is a cute little coffee shop with all the energy of a great neighborhood bar. The cafe americano is on point and reasonable at under 4 bucks and the banter about whether to feed cicadas to one's kids "I can't decide if I should just pile 'em on their burgers..." made me smile. This is directly next to Kuppie's bakery and the guy behind the counter who couldn't figure out what we should be doing with all these cicadas (it's a double brood this year in Illinois) had no trouble making a stellar recommendation of Kuppie's almond squares (which are a candidate for the category of "life changing.")I love that kind of neighborly small business support. First and last time I will ever go there. I met up with a former coworker and friend for coffee here. My friend simply asked him the price of the coffee, where coffee was from, and what its name was (his mom was a journalism major so he always "who, what, why, where, and when" questions). The owner then refused to serve us coffee because he "was tired of the questions". Just 3 questions made this man run out of patience and not serve us. Cutest little shop, I love the artsy-funky jazz ambiance. They have instruments in the back, and paintings on wall. Such a great atmosphere! I wanted to like this place since it is a local place, but it isn't that great. Walking in they had a cute sign outside, however when you enter the Coffee house it is quite dark inside. There were some regulars inside reading and drinking some coffee. There are board games that you can play with friends and there is art you can view along the wall which is pretty neat. The girl working behind the counter was very nice, and gave me suggestions as I looked at the menu. I ended up getting a hot chocolate as well as a Funkaccino with chocolate. The hot chocolate tasted as if it just came from your standard Swiss Miss packaging unfortunately. The Funkaccino was an ice blend with chocolate syrup and left an odd after taste when I take a break from drinking the iced beverage. My little girl and I were housesitting for a friend in Villa Park. We were visiting from the city and we're out on a walk and decided to stop in this coffee shop. The second I walked in I fell in love. It is so eclectically decorated, it looks like an old-school coffee shop from the 60s. I just wanted to grab a coffee to go, and I told the owner it was my first time in from out of town. I couldn't believe it when he gave me my coffee on the house! He was such a sweet man and it was such a nice gesture Rippled into a beautiful day of paying it forward. This is the kind of coffee shop I could sit and study for hours in. It is such a hidden gem in Villa Park and I am so looking forward to stopping in the next time I am in town. Highly recommend! Memorable experience! My son and I stopped in last month. Told the owner we needed lunch. He recommended the deli a couple doors down. Brought our sandwiches back and ate them at Funky Java. Then Larry says we should taste the cookies at the bakery next door. Had Larry make me his favorite coffee drink and it was delicious, as were the reuben and the cookies. We met some regulars. Pete the Beekeeper is super nice and taught me how to fix my yellow jacket problem at my house. Had a friendly conversation about God with another regular. And then Don the house drummer walked in. I bought honey off of Pete and an oil painting from Larry. It was like being on an episode of Cheers. I live in Des Moines, but this is by far my favorite coffee house! read more

There really is no other way of describing this space. Funky. That is all. I have become a great fan of this place, not just for the coffee, but because they support the community. You can purchase art from local artists (this week was Beatles' inspired pop art) and many groups host meetings there--like a local school mom's group. The coffee ain't bad either. In fact, it's pretty darn good. I always get the "special"--whatever coffee treat is written out on the blackboard. This time it was a Raspberry Kiss or something like that. I think it was a special that just lingered after Sweetest Day. As always, the coffee was good and the service was super friendly. With Funky Java around, there really is no reason to get coffee elsewhere. I'm so glad this is close to home because I love it! It's funkalicious. There isn't much to it in terms of appearance. The outside looks pretty plain, as I think it just reads "coffee house" in those big strip mall letters. The inside is interesting. There is just a random assortment of seating, flyers for local events, a bulletin board of local VPers, and some random jewelry for sale at the counter. So what makes the Funky Java a 5-star place? The coffee and the owner. The owner is super nice. My SO and I are still fairly new to the area, and there are some places where we feel out of place, but that's not the case here. We've only been inside a handful of times, but he already recognizes us and makes some small talk. He's always excited to get us our coffee. I love it when people are happy about their businesses. The other day, my fiance went and got coffee for us because I wasn't feeling so awesome. He brings me back my coffee and the owner knew the second coffee was for me, so he drew a silver heart on the lid. That was so sweet and made me feel better. Now the coffee. I don't know how it's so good but it is. Seriously better than any chain coffee place and it's not scalding hot. My latte, cold or hot, is always the perfect balance of coffee and milk. If I could get coffee there every day, I would. And I probably could, because the prices are great too. I think it's only around $2 for my latte. I always enjoy sitting in there at the big table listening to the local Villa Park gossip. I feel so cozy and at home at the Funky Java. Probably my favorite place in Villa Park! read more

Small little coffee house with a laid back feel. The decor is something out of the late 70's...but it is very comfy and would make a great place to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. We have so far always taken our coffee to go, but I would love to visit when they have open mic. They have a drum and guitar setup and ready to go for anyone who wants to jump on. A lot of the decor is local art for sale and there are some wonderful finds. Their coffee is delicious, made with just enough caffeine...no wimpy drinks here ;D And are an excellent value - so much better then going to fourbucks. Try their cookies...they are homemade, fresh and delicious. The owner is extremely friendly and talks to everyone. Looks like the place has their regulars and everyone is happy and relaxed. It's called Funky for a reason. Plus I don't think I got the full, fun experience as the owner was out of town. I walked in and didn't really know what to think. There is stuff everywhere. And it's kinda dark. But that's cool. So I wandered around a little and looked. There's some funky art and some unique jewelry and things in a couple glass cases. But overall this felt like a place where the regulars hang out and I felt like an intruder. There was a group chatting loudly with the staff, having a very weird conversation and just enjoying themselves shooting the $h!t. Too bad the staff didn't say hello to me or acknowledge me. Maybe then in wouldn't have felt so odd. Instead I ordered a hot chocolate (which arrived in a Loyola Hospital cup/sleeve?), paid cash and quickly left. I had about an hour to kill, but there was no way I was doing it there. Although the hot chocolate was okay, it was obviously not a spot that was welcoming to me.
