Great local coffee shop in Villa Park. Simple and great tasting coffee with a laid back, local feel. The same guy is always behind the counter and he's a cool dude. Local guy Larry runs this place. His family is from the Northwest and the atmosphere takes you there. Great neighborhood spot to meet for coffee! A lot of patrons know each other from years past and regularly meet up for a cup and some conversation. The espresso is solid as well. Highly recommend if you're in the area. read more

What a great find. Here on business staying in a quiet hotel down the road - and wanted a place to work on my laptop with some character. This place is fantastic - jazz playing, funky art, a very personable manager who really sets a positive tone - and the coffee is fantastic (had a decaf americano) Went to the bakery right next door for a pastry to top it off. Ok funky is right this place has a weird vibe to it, not bad but different, Coffee was very good. Would give it 4 stars but the smokers hovering around the front door is horrible not to mention illegal. I get it coffee and a cigarette goes together if you are a smoker. People with children don't want to drag their family through a cloud of smoke, it just isn't very inviting. Still smoke and all, coffee is very good. read more

I'm confused...I've tried to check this place out two times (at 7-8PM) and the lights have been out and the shop is not open-- Even though Yelp states that its open until midnight. Either someone needs an updating or you need a password to get in and its just THAT exclusive. Either way, I won't be trying again. read more

Funky Java is the perfect little town coffee spot. Free wi-fi, local art for sale, and awesome coffee. The owner Larry is a cool guy too! I like the Mocha or Valentina, his daughter, who may be around the shop on occasion. Prices are better than any big chain coffee shops and the atmosphere is so much more enjoyable. read more

As laid back as it gets. Larry is incredibly nice, and very well connected with everyone in villa park. Musical gear and art decorate every wall, giving the place a cool jazz feel. The drinks are good too, so I recommend stopping in for a laid back cup o joe and a muffin. read more

Great local coffee house, definitely not a cookie cutter interior. Love all the unusual people who hang out here in the morning. Coffee is good, the people who run the place are super nice, and their hot chai is decent, when they have it. This is my only complaint! three different times I went there, no chai....arghhhhh! Went here a couple days ago and really enjoyed it! The man working behind the counter was very friendly and the coffee was just as good as any chain place. Can't beat the price either. I mentioned to him that I like coconut so he suggested coconut syrup in my iced coffee with almond milk. It was delicious! I'll definitely be back :) read more

So I need to preface this by saying - my iced mocha, was really good. They use Hersey's syrup, because the worker said, "it is kosher". I asked if they got a lot of requests for that and he said some. Anyway, Herseys or not, it was good. I'd come back just for that. The disappointment is in the smoking. BIG BUMMER. We had to come inside to escape from the smoke (yes, inside!) On such a beautiful day, there were a swarm of smokers all within 2- 10 feet of the door at the outside tables. I thought there was a law about the number of feet one had to be smoking. The ashtrays, on every table, smelled. There were numerous cigarette butts on the ground as well. : - ( The inside of the place is a total dive, but it makes it very charming. I love dives. So I totally dig the vibe going on inside. Art work, a few things for sale, a little this, a little that....There were a few dudes talking politics inside, which made for interesting eave-dropping. Funny thing about this place, was all the patrons were men! Seriously, the cig smoking was a disappointment. It could be soooo good, but it seems it is a hangout for smokers. read more

This is a very unique and relaxed place to snag a coffee and unwind. My wife and I stopped in for our first time. The barista (probably the owner) was extremely friendly and courteous. I told him we just moved into the area and we chatted for a bit about some of the cool shops and food joints in the area. He recommended some places that we had not tried yet since we moved here. The coffee is roasted by a local roaster and there is a lot of local art on display inside. The frosty mocha is delicious although I have a feeling the hot coffee and lattes are probably be best bet here. The hours are a bit funky so make sure it is open before you head that way. I will be going to this place instead of Starbucks now when I can. read more

We were riding our tandem bike down the Prairie Path and ended up here for a couple muffins & an iced coffee. When we wanted to pay with a debit card the owner said they didn't take credit cards. We had no cash and he said "Don't worry about it. It's on me" He was so generous. Of course, we felt bad, so we rode down the street to a cash station at Jewel and returned with the $6.00 we owed. This is a great place. The owner is really nice and we highly recommend Funky Java. We'll be back!! read more

Larry is the man, and Funky Java is the house. The drinks are amazing (and quick!), and the coffee is fresh. He's always happy to suggest a new drink, or a twist on your old favorite. The inside is a nice jazzy atmosphere with work from local artists on the walls. He books live music a lot, and it's always a good time.
