Great breakfast spot. Seems to get really busy closer to brunch times on weekend. We went earlier and had no problem getting a table. Breakfast was good. Our table tried the Neutella/Banana Waffles and a Bacon/Egg/Cheese. All were good and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend. read more

Went here last night after a comedy show. I could tell the workers were very busy and overwhelmed, with the amount of customers and also the amount of black customers. I ordered my food, the cashier was rude because we couldn't hear each other over the live band. Received my food, went back to my hotel room and my order was wrong. I went back to the restaurant to ask for a refund, and there were two other (black) ladies, attempting to get a refund as well. The three workers were extremely rude and unprofessional while dealing with the complaints of paying customers. While I stood their for over 20 minutes waiting for someone to address me...there were people waiting for pick up orders they had to keep asking about their orders. They announced they'd be shutting the line down in 10 minutes, instead of making another announcement saying they were actually done taking orders..the cashier just turned his back to line and started making smoothies. So, there was a line of people waiting to order not realizing they were done taking orders..there was a guy standing at the register with money in his hand this whole time and instead of being politely told that they're closed the cashier acted like he wasn't there and when the guy spoke up the cashier's response was "I said 15 minutes ago the line closes in 10 minutes" (I stood at the pickup counter and watched all of this take place) I did end up getting $18 of my $32 back, after getting aggressive with one of the 3 works because he was nasty with me and told me over and over very loudly and aggressively that they don't give refunds. So thanks for that. I know I caught them on a bad night, I could tell but that's not my problem and my service or food shouldn't have suffered because of it. Also, I did bite a chicken tender before I returned the food...dry and flavorless. If you actually like chicken and waffles, good food or good customer service...don't come here I'm sure this review seems like a big rambling, run on sentence..but I had to document my experience with them the best way I could. read more

Funk 'n Waffles - This was supposed to be the John James Brownie Waffle - New American Near Me - Syracuse, New York

Like any good Yelper when visiting a new city, I look to see where the cool, hip, trendy, and locally loved places are. As an avid Food Network watcher, I also look to see where those stars like to eat or have covered on their various shows. Funk 'n Waffles was one that Guy Fieri visited for his show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. It was then featured again on an episode of Guilty Pleasures. Clearly these were indisputable signs that I HAD to go check them out. I visited Funk 'n Waffles in late September 2019 and I'm not going to lie. I was underwhelmed. The location is easy to find in Downtown Syracuse. Once you walk in, it is spacious and has lots of seating in the main area where the register is along with additional space in the attached room next door. It looks to be set up as an event space complete with DJ booth. I decided to try two half waffles, one savory and one sweet, to get the full experience considering I would not be able to stop in later. I ordered stuffed smoked gouda and herb waffle off the savory menu and their (at the time) new banana bread waffle off the sweet menu. We'll discuss in the order of consumption. The savory waffle had plenty of gouda stuffed inside and a decent amount of herb-y goodness and just enough sour cream to cut through the cheese. Of the two, this waffle I liked more because of its uniqueness. That and I just love gouda!! The banana bread waffle came topped with walnuts, blueberries, and dusted with powdered sugar. Unfortunately it was overcooked and dry. I slathered it in a ton of syrup to try and save it. Considering it was just me and three other patrons in the shop I was not sure how they messed up the waffle timing. If they were hella busy, then it would make a bit more sense to me. read more

Was in town overnight and looking for a sit down breakfast place. Googled places and found this. Upon walking in we didn't realize the two buildings were connected with a larger dining area. Saw everyone waiting in line, grabbed a menu to browse. Once at the counter we let them know we had never been here before so walk us through the process. Nice lady let us know we could sit anywhere, order at the counter when ready. We ordered three different ones and a half order of home fries. Once you order they give you a buzzer first buzz is for drinks second for food. Drinks were ready pretty quickly and food was out twenty minutes later. The place was steady busy but not overwhelming. Home fries were delicious! We tried plain waffle with strawberries, bacon filled with honey, bananas and peanut butter, lastly Nutella with bananas. It was all delicious and would definitely stop again when in the area. read more

I had low expectations seeing their Yelp reviews, but even then they couldn't reach such a low bar... We ordered a waffle and a turkey sandwich. The waffle was sitting out for over 15 minutes since the turkey sandwich was "backed up". We had to look over the counter to ask to just take the waffle first, but it was cold by the time we took it. As for the sandwich, we waited over 30 minutes until we went up to the counter only to be told they ran out of pesto for the sandwich and that the order is "backed up". We also noticed the kitchen staff arguing and cursing at each other in the back, which probably explains why it was "backed up". It took another 5 minutes for them to bring out a depressing sandwich with not even 2 slices of turkey on it. Overall a waste of money (and time), which isn't surprising with such an incompetent staff. read more

waited almost an hour for our food. which was just waffles...we saw multiple people who ordered after us get there food as well. The waffle was not good. Pricey but tasty. Go for the waffles, stay for the music. This spot is a hip spot for waffles and music. The chicken and waffles are excellent -- with chicken strips made from strips of chicken, well seasoned, instead of a factory. Skip the milkshakes here, they're nothing special (even adult versions) but the 'james brownie' was well-received and well shared. read more

The atmosphere is great. Very cool interior. Service was blah, and so was the food. I had high hope for a great waffle, but was let down. I had the Bootsy Brunch (1/2 bacon stuffed butter milk waffle with two eggs and cheddar cheese served as a sandwich) the waffle didn't have much bacon at all and just tasted like bacon grease. The eggs were way over fried and had the texture of rubber. I also got a Banana Bread waffle (banana bread batter, topped with blueberries and walnuts) it was the driest waffle I've ever tasted. Like, take a buckwheat waffle, then make it drier. I tried adding some moisture by slathering it with butter (will give them credit for having real butter) but no luck. The flavor was also blah. It also took about 30 minutes to get my order, and I was one of two other tables in the place. All in all, I wish I would have stuck with the make your own waffles at my hotel this morning... read more

This place has a great vibe! And the waffles were yummy. Will definitely be coming back!

I had a review for the old spot...this place used to be my favorite pastime. I have been coming here for a decade. The wings used to have the perfect breading and a little bit of a kick. I could taste the cayenne. Even the hot sauce/syrup combo, you could taste the heat in. But things have changed since they opened this new location and closed the other one. Everything is blander. Ordered a double chicken and waffles this morning. One with tenders, one with regular wings. The tenders were burnt AND dry, and I like my chicken with a lot of color. They look like when you don't clean out a fryer. The breading doesn't taste right. The old breading was like an explosion in your mouth. Then you would dip into the combo sauce and taste just enough heat. The color on the wings looked better. But the breading immediately fell off which means the oil was cold or the breading didn't sit for long enough. The inside of the chicken was raw. I ate one without really paying attention until I realized it tasted funny. It was raw in the center. Now I really hope I don't get sick. I read a previous comment about the chicken wings being organic and that's why they're red. I've NEVER had this issue with the old Funk n Waffles. They must have changed cooks or something. Both of the waffles I received were undercooked and soggy. I'm just very disappointed because this was one of my absolute favorite spots and I'd recommend to anyone. read more

I found this place while exploring Syracuse and am so happy I stopped in. I had the Monte Cristo waffle with kale and banana smoothie. The flavor of the waffle paired with the egg, ham, and cheese were beyond delicious. I was so content and was happily satisfied. The nice thing about these waffles is that you can order them as a half order or a full order. These waffles are not large, they're pretty standard, but it is still nice to get a half order when you're getting it with other things on top. This is a cool place to experience if you're in the area. read more

Went to this place tonight for dinner as it was featured in Triple D on TV awhile back. The neighborhood of Syracuse in which this place is located is very hippie and trendy if you ask me. Once in the place they had a live band which was great. Love the atmosphere, ambiance and the art. I ordered the Jive Turkey 1/2 waffle gearing that a whole waffle was huge. It was just right upon getting it. There's a lot going on in this plate. It's basically a thanksgiving dinner resting on top of a waffle. The combination of the waffle along with the turkey, mash potatoes and stuffing was fantastic. The turkey was very savory, tender and flavorful to go along with the cranberry sauce which I spread in top. You couldn't really taste the waffle with everything on top of it but all in all is was a delicious filling meal that hit the spot. My only complaint is that at a place like this they should have waiters/waitresses serving the patrons. Everything else provided is appreciated. read more

I've been here both on a weekend morning for breakfast and late night for drinks and live music. Funk n Waffles plays both parts well. I've never seen another place that can boast live music every single night. As for breakfast, this place is great for both mornings when you want to be relatively healthy or when you want to pig out. For the former, I go with a 1/2 order of the iron lion zion, which is a buckwheat waffle with blueberries, bananas and strawberries. I like how the sweetness of the fruits and syrup complement the more savory buckwheat waffle. On my not-so-healthy days (aka after an "out until the 2am lights come on at Bar across the street" kind of night), I get the all shook up waffle. The combo of bacon with banana, honey and peanut butter (an ode to Elvis's favorite sandwich) is one of my all time favorites. I can't wait to try their chicken and waffles soon. read more

Friendly service and a cool location. Their waffles are so tasty and come in such a variety that anyone can find something they like. They can cater to different dietary needs such as gluten free. I make this a MUST when in Syracuse! I usually have trouble deciding: a full thanksgiving dinner? chicken & waffles? dessert? traditional? do I get eggs too? No matter the answer every time my only disappointment is that I can't eat 4 different orders at once. Price is reasonable. Decor is funky. Waits can be long but always worth it! read more

Ordered star child, chocolate milk shake and a coffee via seamless. The waffle was fluffy, tasteful and the strawberries were very fresh. Maple syrup wasn't very sweet, just the way I like. The coffee was v nice and the milk shake had a big dullop of whipped cream and was very tasty. Everything was pretty basic and good but nothing ground breaking like the reviews say. Apparently when you order pickup, They're told to check the card that you payed with and then ID you. On a recent visit to Syracuse to visit my friends, we decided to come to Funk n Waffles on a Saturday morning for brunch. There were 4 of us, and we were nervous it would be really packed, but we were pleasantly surprised when there were a bunch of tables open! We were a little confused how things worked, but someone quickly told us to grab menus, sit wherever we want, and then order at the counter. AOK got it. We decided to get a variety to share, so we ended up with: full chicken and waffles, full all shook up, full james brownie, half jive turkey, and half bootsie brunch. All of these waffles were sooo good!! Most people agreed that the jive turkey was their favorite, though I definitely preferred the chicken and waffles (the fried chicken was seasoned perfectly, and the spicy hot sauce / maple syrup was so good). The all shook up was pretty generic, and the bacon was barely recognizable. The bootsie brunch was also just ok. The james brownie was MONSTROUS. We put it in the middle of the table and all took bites throughout eating our other waffles. The edges were reallllyyyy crunchy (in a weird way), but the center of it was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. It was literally a brownie that was cooked in a waffle pan. I loved it! Definitely 1 full to share among 4 or 5 people is plenty, if you want to go for it! We also had some coffees which were good, I had the almond joy mocha which was a special. I couldn't really taste anything besides chocolate, but it was good nonetheless. I'd definitely recommend stopping in and getting: chicken and waffles, jive turkey, james brownie read more

Decent staff. Food horrible, this was probably the worst meal I've had in a long time. Soggy waffles and bland wings. I am really in disbelief at how bad it was. I threw it away and walked to Starbucks. Restroom disgusting. read more

When you book a ticket to see a nerdcore hiphop show in Syracuse you might be a bit confused by a venue named Funk 'N Waffles. Is it a resturaunt? Is it a trendy spin on the DJ scene? The drive from Buffalo-to-Door took just under 2hrs and 20 minutes. It is a relatively straight shot East across NY state, with a highway exit within walking distance of Funk 'N Waffles street parking. On a Sunday the meters were free and having arrived an hour early, I found plenty of parking within 50 feet of the building. There was also a paid lot directly across the street and 2 parking garages within extremely close walking distance. If you are coming for a show, I recommend you arrive early so that you have time to enjoy a waffle and tea. I politely asked the person behind the register to recommend something and we settled on the Earth Wind and Fire, a thick buckwheat waffle topped by syrup, walnuts, and banannas. I added strawberries as well and happily accepted the green ice tea that was also recommended. The staff was so accomidating, extremely friendly, and provided service with a huge smile. I waited for my food in an old style '70s diner booth and took in the trendy decore, the art on the walls, the 45s nailed below the counter, and the rack of t-shirts ($20 and a worthwhile souvenir). The seating area has booths on both sides with a wide isle in the middle. My food was up within a few minutes. I grabbed it from the front service area and then headed back to my seat near the window. Music serenaded my back as I enjoyed the delicious waffle and fresh fruit toppings. Everything was amazing and priced for those on a budget, I only wish I had been hungry enough to try more recommendations from the menu! Once the line outside started to move, I joined the end and made my way into the adjoining door of the concert venue side of the establishment. This area has a full bar, plenty of standing room, and felt comfortably warm on this cool fall day. I was happy to see that they stocked some 12 and 18yr old Scotches. They also have ear plugs for $1. The support pillars on the right of this area are a bit of a hindrance but they never fully got in the way to the point that I felt they took away from the experience. The stage is rather small and if I had to guess I would say the sold-out show was close to 100 people. We were comfortably packed in and there was room to move through the crowd, reach the bar, and even cross back over into the restaurant if needed. The acts I came to see (MegaRan, MC Lars, and MC Chris) were accessible by their merch tables. The entire atmosphere felt cozy and welcoming. It made the meet-and-greet experience incredibly enjoyable. Funk 'N Waffles was impressive. Such a simple concept, done right, by people who obviously care about providing an amazing experience for their patrons. I would love to come back again for another show in the future. read more

I give this place 3 stars - 4 stars for food and 2 for cleanliness. The waffle choices were elaborate and they had a great selection. We loved the options we had the the waffles we ordered. One side of the menu is "Sweet" with lots of fruit and the other side is "savory" with more traditional breakfast items. We made sure to order one from both sides. We got our food quick and even got a buzzer to let us know when our food was ready. As for the atmosphere, the walls were very well decorated with art and the place seemed very artsy and relaxed in general. However, the place was not very clean. I know they also have live music, and it seems much more focused on that than the food aspect. When we sat down, many of the tables were dirty and not cleaned. Also, the floor was completely ripped up and looked desperately in need of fixing, but I am guessing that is from the shows they host. If you are in Armory Square and specifically looking for breakfast/waffles then I would definitely suggest this place. read more

Sunday for breakfast was not crowded when we arrived around 10:00am but by the time we left around 11:00 the tables were mostly filled and a line had formed at the counter. The space is split into two areas, one with the ordering counter and booths and another alongside with small tables, a bar and a stage. Seems like it might be a cool place to watch a show but there weren't any bands playing while we were there. There is lots of brightly colored graffiti style art painted on the walls and some canvases for sale on the walls. Not sure if the selling artists ever change but it gave the place a very modern and hip vibe. For drinks we ordered a hot jasmine green tea and a red eye: a drop coffee with a shot of espresso. The tea bagged by hand right in front of us which was pretty cool. The coffee was good quality and fairly priced. For food we got a full order of the chicken and waffles and a half of the James Brownie. The chicken was a choice of tenders or wings. I am usually a wing man but the recommendation was for the strips so I went with that. The part that makes the dish is the sweet and spicy sauce that you can drizzle over the top. The James Brownie is a waffle made from brownie batter with scoops of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce. Almost a dessert but there's a waffle underneath so it's still breakfast in my book. The cost for two for breakfast was about 25 dollars.
