Planned a drive to Syracuse while visiting my son. He has been to this place before so we planned on having brunch here. Almost $13 parking with only an option for a flat fee of 15+hrs. After a long time the two Nutella lattes he ordered were made. He got two mediums when a medium and a large were ordered. But the food was no where to be found. I started to get anxious as food is the reason to be here. When he went to check on the order-keep in mind I see all these people that arrived after us getting their food- he is told that the mobile order did not print. But part of the food was on the drinks ticket. And it was all prepaid in their app. Anyway, it has been over 45mins and I'm still to eat. At this point I don't think I care much for the taste is it. Place is like a bar with breakfast; casual ambiance. Nonstop music. Trying to hit only local spots while in the area. Not sure I would ever come back if in the area. Disappointed. It's been an hour and our food still not done. It's waffles not rocket science. Guess what? We ended up getting a full refund after being asked if we wanted to wait. The place was already packed and I lost any interest in trying the food. Not the staff total fault, but the order should have been placed the moment they noticed there was a problem with the system printing. read more

Funk n' Waffles was started by two Syracuse University students, Kyle Corea and Adam Gold. In their junior year of college, late at night the two best friends would use their upstairs neighbor's waffle maker. They started to experiment with waffle making by using out-of-the-ordinary ingredients. To their surprise, the concoctions all tasted fantastic. One night, they decided to throw a party where they gave out free waffles to guests and provided live music. They continued to throw such parties after receiving an overwhelmingly positive response and began to go to bars where their favorite bands played where they would make and sell waffles right at the side of the bar. Corea and Gold decided to stay in Syracuse after their senior year and bring their idea to life. As they looked for a space, a coffee shop called La Tazza was on the verge of closing. The friends struck a deal with the owners of La Tazza to take over the business and the costs, opened Funk n' Waffles, and haven't looked back since. This locally owned business was created by students for students. Its collaboration of music and food brings about an alternative, welcoming environment for all ages. With a menu unlike any other, Funk n' Waffles focuses mainly on assortments of different kinds of waffles. They range from your traditional buttermilk waffle with syrup to your not so traditional waffles with pulled pork on top. They also try and use as many local and organic products as possible. Though I lived in Syracuse for most of my life and had heard of Funk n' Waffles a thousand times, I'd never been. Recently, a friend of mine was performing a show, so I decided to attend and try out some of these famous waffles as well. The showroom is nice. Small, intimate, bar to the right. Ordering is fairly simple...go to the cash register on the restaurant side, order and get one of those little handhelds that vibrate when your food is ready. I went for classic chicken & waffles while the wife ordered a Jive turkey. We both ordered a half as we knew we wanted dessert as well. The food was prepared in an acceptable amount of time. Wasn't extremely fast or slow. The chicken and waffles were tasty, but what really makes that dish is the cinnamon hot sauce they serve on the side. It is absolutely delicious. The wife liked her dish as well, but commented that the fact that its all kinda just thrown on top makes it hard to discern the flavors. We ordered a half James Brownie for dessert, which I was very excited for, but unfortunately, it was a disappointment. The brownie waffle was rock hard. It was almost impossible to eat, and other than the ice cream, most of the dish got thrown away. In my opinion, it was ok. The food wasn't bad, but didn't blow me away, and the dessert was an absolute disappointment. We may go again, but more than likely only if there's a performance we wanna see. read more

Waffles were delicious, it wasn't packed for a saturday morning which was great! This is my first time in this area and I loved the vibes inside! The service was like a 5/10 but food came out quick so it made up for it! read more

Favorite place (and only local place) for vegan waffles!! I also like their strawberry banana smoothies as well

This has got to be the most overrated place in Syracuse, and I'm honestly a bit shocked they were featured on Guy Fieri's show. First of all, I would not really call this a restaurant, because they don't serve you. The ambiance was not friendly and the open mic night performers were... quite strange. The food was average at best, and their "secret sauce" can pretty much be boiled down to syrup with hot sauce. Not very creative. And definitely overpriced for what you get. We went prior to COVID when it was practically empty and it took over 45 minutes for one of our waffles to come out. No, "sorry for the wait" or anything. It's not like waiting around in their establishment was enjoyable, tbh. It's not anything special, in my opinion. I don't ever plan to go there again. read more

We got to Funk N Waffles early which I advise you to do so also because it got pretty crowded quickly. The wait time for the food was not bad and the outdoor seating was great. I got the Whole Jersey Shore Waffle and could barely finish it just because of how rich it is. If I were to visit again I would opt for the half size so I don't walk out feeling this full. I also got a Strawberry Milkshake which was alright. I had a taste of the Chicken with Waffles and it was very good and I would order that next time around. read more

My girlfriend was the one who had heard of this place, even though I have been an avid Triple D fan since I was a kid and it sure did not disappoint! I had looked online at the menu and knew that I'd want to get the Bulgogi Waffle, a beautiful Asian-Waffley mix. The "waffle" was made of fried rice, covered in pork and a spicy Mayo. The taste was better than from any Hibachi restaurant I have ever been to. The crew there seemed to be having a good time, cutting up about the second egg on my waffle in the kitchen. The employees were quick to accommodate my thirst for sweet tea even though they don't have it ready to sell. Great service. read more

Very friendly staff and very COVID safe for dining in. Would recommend for anyone looking for a quick bite to eat. Large variety of waffles and other sweet/savory breakfast options (including vegan options). I tried the Aunt Miriam's Vegan Waffle and the Vegan Boosty Brunch, both were delicious but the vegan batter has a bit of an aftertaste. read more

A gem in Syracuse. Went for the 1st time. It was a unique dining experience. The food was great and the atmosphere even better. A very colorful menu that won't drain your wallet. Recommend looking at website before your visit. They have an entertainment venue and one could really make a fantastic night of it. read more

In my humble opinion, the food is hit or miss, especially with regard to flavor. I enjoy the restaurant itself, the energy lives up to "funk" for sure. Love that they host various on brand events ad well. Come for the vibes, don't expect a ton from the food. read more

Professional. The food was okay, I was really disappointed in the waffle because the texture was soggy. It was not airy, soft and crisp like waffles normally are. The home fries are okay not all that either. I do think the food is reasonably priced because you get large portions but the food is just lacking. Maybe it was todays cook I'm unsure of that but it could be an explanation. If you dine in you do have to do all the self service like grabbing your food once it's ready, grabbing your own silverware, condiments, napkins and to go box. They do have it all conveniently out for you to grab so you don't have to ask. They also have water out and cups to the side if you would like a cup of water. Also one side of the dine in area has fans on that make the room kind of cold.. the fans put so much cool air in the room that it makes your food get cold quickly. I'm not sure why 2 fans were in anyway when it was 36 degrees outside ? Very chill place to grab a bite but for a waffle place they fall flat with the texture of the waffles for sure. read more

We got here right as soon as this place opened and had our waffles prepared without much of a wait. I highly recommend getting here early as the place was packed within 30 minutes. The waffles were all tasty, loved the combinations. And definitely enjoyed the people watching!! read more

I have postponed writing this review because I have been too busy. However; I have time now as I sit in Orlando waiting to go to the airport. FnW hosted by buddy's band. My wife and I went for the first time, and we loved the stage and bar area of the "restaurant". Very cool place. It was full of people who were there to see the band. The disappointing thing was seeing everyone leave once the set completed. A new band came in and a whole new crew of patrons too. We hoped to stay, but it lost its appeal when the transition between bands and patrons killed the atmosphere. The food was good for pub fare. The beer and wine selection seemed limited. I would return for waffles on a Saturday morning or if my friend's band played here again. read more

I don't know why we haven't tried this place sooner! My husband and I were looking for a 'different' breakfast vibe and offerings so wandered into Funk and Waffles. You place your order at the front, get a buzzer and then go find a table. When your order is ready you pick it up at the counter. F&W has a variety of sweet and savory waffle combinations, milkshakes, coffees and a full bar. We ordered the chicken and waffles and the waffle with bananas and Nutella. The batter was well seasoned, soft and fluffy. And the sauce that came with the chicken and waffles married the two so well. We liked this place so much we were back two weekends later!! Ordered the same chicken and waffles but this time we opted for a half order of the banana bread waffle and half of the brownie batter waffle with strawberries and whipped cream. The brownie batter waffle was awesome- sweet, moist and the perfect little breakfast dessert! While we were here for breakfast it's way more than that - in the evenings they have live music up on stage as well. Hope to be back to see a show a soon. read more

Three friends and I dined in, my friend and I were on one check and the other couple was on another. After 20 minutes the other couple got their drink and meals, after waiting 35 minutes- I decided to check and see where our drinks were. I was told that it will come out with the food, not a big deal (but 35 minutes without a drink is ridiculous!). Then I started to notice that tables seated after us were getting their food. At this point my friends were done eating and we still didn't get our drinks. I went up to the counter and asked for my iced tea and bottle of water, I was told the latte will be send out with the food. Ok, I went back to our table. After about 10 more minutes I went back to the counter to ask about our food and latte- the barista said she just finished making it, but it clearly had been sitting on the bar (it wasn't fresh OR hot), I asked the server about our food- he said it hasn't been started yet (the kitchen lost our ticket). I get it you're busy and things like that happen- I totally get it and that's ok. But there was NO apology or communication- the server (or whatever he is) just walked away and didn't ask if I still wanted to wait. Maybe if my friends at my table didn't finish their meal already we would have waited. I went back and asked my friend if they still wanted to eat here- but we were both disappointed and decided not to. I went back to the counter and handed back the cold latte and asked that the order be canceled. The server just replied 'yeah, sure'. And that was it. Period. What kind of customer service is that? You tell me. I wasn't upset or angry- I just asked for the order to be canceled because we waited a long time with no food or drinks. I don't think that's a professional way to handle the situation- especially after waiting 45 minutes for a table. read more

Fun place with delicious waffles! Worth the wait. Was especially busy parents weekend.

Went here with two other people and we all ordered our drinks and food at the same time. I ordered a chai tea, it tasted like hot milk, because I had bought a large I brought it up and asked if some more chai could be added to it. The woman I asked scowled at me and took the drink out of my hand without saying anything. She then brought it to the barista and asked him to put more chai in it. He did and it tasted better, but still not great. Also he did add chai mix to my drink, instead of making a new one. Is that against health regulations? Especially with Covid? Then two of us got our meals in a timely manner but waited for a while until we finally started eating. The 3rd member of our party waited a full 30 minutes before she got her food. We also got waffle fries and they were straight up bad. They tasted burned. My guess is the oil was old. The only reason this is getting 2 starts is because the waffles themselves were good. The people who work here clearly hate people. read more

My boyfriend and I shared the Jive Turkey, (stuffing waffle, topped with mashed potatoes, turkey and gravy - cranberry sauce on the side) and the Star Child, (buttermilk waffle with strawberries and whipped cream). The Jive Turkey was ok - it didn't live up to all the hype seen on Food Network. It would have been nice if the waffle itself was crispier but overall it tasted good. I really liked the cranberry sauce but they don't give you very much, so if you get a whole waffle the ratios are off. The Star Child just sucked. You think it would be hard to mess up since it is just a basic buttermilk waffle but it was rubbery and chewy, and lacked any flavor at all. I would like to give Funk'n Waffles the benefit of the doubt considering I only tried two of their menu options, but based on my experience I would say: it would be wise to invest your money in a waffle maker rather than spend it at Funk'n Waffles. Now, the food is not the only determining factor in my decision to not recommend Funk'n Waffles; the lack of overall cleanliness goes against them too. The floor is dirty, the tables are sticky, and the bussing station is absolutely disgusting - leaving a great last impression before you walk out of the door. I must mention the staff were very friendly and attentive, which is a definite plus. I think the concept is great, but the execution is poor, and the product could improve. read more

3 stars for the interior. It has a real, bowling alley/old arcade vibe. Not very impressive and honestly kind of old, dirty & beat up. 5 stars for that chicken! We just tried a half plate of chicken tenders and waffles. It was GOOD! I prefer a waffle with a little more crisp but it was fine. The chicken tenders were really great though! My husband really liked the house sauce but I wasn't a fan. I felt like it was just muddled down versions of syrup and hot wing sauce. I just dipped mine in hot sauce alone and it was goooood! I'm glad we stopped in but we probably won't seek out to go there again. read more

We really liked it a lot. Atmosphere is very casual, yet clean. You order your own food, and when it is ready you know via the buzzer and pick it up. I felt compelled to get the chick tenders and waffles. I got a half waffle and 3 tenders. It was the best ever. Loved it. Check out the menu. They have everything. Might want to check it out ahead of time. Hubby got a cuban sandwich, and enjoyed it. After my bite I found the port to be a bit fatty but very tasty. I chatted with the gentleman about the Dead cover band who play Monday nights and learned that they are a favorite of David Gans, who Dead Heads will know of. I will def check them out next time I am in town. This is a great place I will be back at. I did notice that folks that ordered a full waffle mostly got a to go box. Even with a half waffle I was very stuffed and could barely finish this. Please check this place out. Very very good, and I am sure very popular with the college crowd as it should be. Nice job! read more

Visited here randomly. Dined in for the first visit and really liked the food. Chicken was really good and tasty. Waffle was fresh and hot. The mid rating is for the Door Dash delivery I did later that evening. The chicken was undercooked and rushed. Waffle was soggy and lukewarm. I just don't understand how because the restaurant was only 3 streets away from our hotel. All in all, undercooked chicken is unacceptable. There was still blood in the middle of the wings. Couldn't even finish it. read more

"meh"...Maybe I was expecting more than I should of. Waffles were small. Crispy chicken was crispy as it was burnt. Waffle was undercooked. Was not impressed with paper plates. Restaurant dirty. Best chicken and waffles I have EVER had. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because we had to wait over 45 minutes for our food/coffee... AND the waffle was ice cold. This is a funny place: there's seating, an open kitchen, a stage, a bar, and plenty of random colorful decor. The vibe is borderline dingy, we kept hearing thuds from the ceiling throughout our meal and I was worried the place would start falling apart. Their menu is cute and creative, but the food is pretty bland. We ordered the florentine, falafel, and bacon n brie. My florentine had a measly amount of salmon and spinach, my side of sunny side up eggs were sad and overcooked, and my cappuccino was just plain and flavorless. Staff here don't serve or check on customers which seems strange for the way the place is set up, and it was hard for us to figure out if we had to bus our own tables or not. This was my first time visiting Syracuse and my first meal here, too! FnW definitely adds a little life and color to downtown, but not Food Network worthy IMO. Perhaps it's more exciting at night with the booze and music. read more

My first was ok. Food ok. The atmosphere was great love the pictures and music. Second visit food was terrible. I ordered toast, eggs bacon, homefries The potatoes were burned, bacon almost burned, toast not toasted. My drink was warm. My kids received their food fast, I waited at least 30 min and they ordered a lot more than I did. My food was bland I ate what I could because I was hungry. Third and final try. I don't know how they get the cheese inside, but it's in there! And the herbs just complemented it so well. Very different, but exactly as advertised. This is a pretty hipster type of place, no frills, you order at the counter. We had to move our booth because someone sat at the next table with extremely powerful BO. Ok, so we went because of diner's drive-ins and dives... other places Guy endorses have been pretty good but this place no. When you "waffle" food you really want the crispy nooks and crannies but here the waffles were soft. I got the chicken parmigiana and was expecting a spaghetti filled waffle but it was more breading. Plus I'm not a fan of chicken breast tenders because they are too dry. My husband got the monte Christo and I swear his egg was microwaved Sunny side up which meant no runniness like you would expect. I think their sweet waffles are probably ok so if you really want to give them a shot that's what I recommend. I'm giving it two stars cause the workers were nice and probably hard working college kids... can't be mad about that. read more
