The workouts are full body with emphasis on strengthening the core to protect the back, and toning all the muscles in the body. You'll find muscles you never knew you had. A few years ago, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and had an extremely hard time walking. After trying several things, such as acupuncture and physical therapy, to get movement back into my joints, I joined a gym and eventually quit. About 6 months ago, I joined a yoga studio that I love and I now go at least 5x per week, but I wanted to add something new to my workout. I purchased a Groupon to try Function Pilates - great idea! For my 1st class, I was actually the only participant, so I received one-on-one instruction with Shelly. Because she knew that I actively practiced yoga, she challenged me in the workout. The movements were not hard, but I could definitely feel how my muscles were strengthening and lengthening in a different way. I have taken classes with 2 other instructors, Vanessa and Emily, as well and they were also very helpful and got me to feel muscles that I didn't know I had! The instructors don't push you beyond your limits and help make adjustments based on your own body's needs. The classes have a 3:1 ratio, so you definitely get the attention you need to ensure you are working out properly. At the end of each class, I'm surprised at how quickly the time goes! read more

Where to begin, when something has been such an integral part of your health for so long. My husband and I are constantly recommending the practice of pilates to people. We are 64 years old. This is an exercise program for ALL AGES. It addresses any stiffness, alignment issues, and other body related issues a person might have. But, while helping those issues, is giving a full-body workout, aiding in balance, helping to keep a person limber, and building wonderful muscle tone! I have taken Pilates for about 8 years from people in various cities and I have taken from Vanessa for about three years. Her newest studios are fabulous. Beautifully designed and conveniently located. I can only speak of my experience taking from Vanessa. She is well-educated on the various skeletal issues, including postural problems. Her workouts are always tailored to how you are feeling at the time and they are ever changing and healthily challenging. When Vanessa was looking for other instructors, she was quite selective about their training. Because of this, I would imagine that they would be excellent. She would only accept excellence. The reformer classes at many studios are around 6 people. At Function, there are three to a class. This is optimal, so that the individual attention is not lost in the crowd. I find her pricing to be extremely fair as well. Again, less than other studios. We have taken from many instructors over the years due to travel and moves. There are two instructors who definitely stand apart from the rest in their abilities...Vanessa Kelly in Tempe, and Laura Modena in Jackson, Wy. They are the best of the best. read more

I am in my fifties and started five months ago and have been taking reformer classes regularly. I am a big fan of this studio. The three person classes give the right level of attention to really improve your form. I have seen real changes in my posture and flexibility. The classes themselves just speed by. Usually for me and hour of exercise class feels like three. The instructors deal with newbies easily, as they adjust for each person individually. I have been going to this Studio for about two years! Vanessa (Owner) is AWESOME and all the staff members that I have experienced are also very knowledgeable and caring!!! The semi-private reformer classes is a maximum of three students, but she is very attentive to each individual and helps provide modifications needed. I always leave here feeling great! I just recently started the floor classes and LOVE them!!! My main focus has been to improve posture and preventing my scoliosis from getting worse as I age. I wasn't sure if I'd like Pilates on the reformer so I purchased a 5 class package. After my third class, I can definitely say I'm hooked. My second class w Luanne and my third class w May were both phenomenal. They spend so much time with you on an individual basis and address all your concerns. In fact Luanne pointed out something in my posture that explained all the hip, knee problems I have had for years. She gave me exercises/stretches to do at home to help correct my posture. It's different than any other work out (and I do them all: hot yoga, spin, boot camp, run, barre). It's a deeper strength and already I can feel a difference in my spine. Less strain and pain (when I didn't even know I had any. I just figured it was normal to feel that way). Thanks Function Egoscue!! Looking forward to continuing on my journey to getting even healthier, lean muscle, correct posture and less hip/knee pain. read more
