Had lunch today at Martin's BBQ Joint located at 3029 Pump House Road in Vestavia Hills, Alabama…read more It's actually in the Cahaba Heights area off of Highway 280. You order at the counter, which can be a little hectic for a first-timer. Luckily for me, I knew what I wanted and quickly found it on the big menu on the wall beside me. I later noticed that people were looking at handheld menus as you entered the restaurant. There was no one in front of me when I entered, so I didn't see those. The lady at the counter was very friendly and helpful in answering my questions. I ordered the pulled pork shoulder tray with two sides. If you have read my reviews, you know I only eat fries, so I doubled up the fries. You are given a number and can sit anywhere in their very big (for a BBQ joint) indoor dining area, or you can sit on a patio or outside. The walls are COVERED with pictures of old movie posters, country music stars, album covers, car tags, signs, and even a picture of the NWO (IYKYK). I didn't see the required Alabama BBQ joint picture of The Bear, Alabama football coach Paul Bryant, but with so many things on the wall, I'm sure it has to be there somewhere. There is a separate 'To-Go' spot for placing orders on the run. This also looked like a bar area as I saw advertising for alcohol. They also offer T-shirts and hats for sale if that is your thing. The menu consists of burgers, tacos, brisket, chicken, catfish, smoked chicken wings, BBQ nachos with just about any kind of side you can ask for, and pie for dessert. My order was brought to me in a timely manner. The BBQ is West Tennessee-style whole hog that Martin's cooks low and slow over hickory wood for up to 24 hours. The pulled pork is melt-in-your-mouth delicious, topped off with their special Jack's Creek BBQ sauce, on the table, which is a sweet vinegar and pepper-based sauce. I did see other sauces behind the counter, so I'm sure you just have to ask. The portions were just right for me. The fries are real cut potatoes that have been peeled. I doubled up, and that was enough to feed a family of four. Next time I will just ask for one side so as not to waste fries. The Jack's Creek sauce was great poured over my fries; it is water-based and not thick, and that is how I like my sauce. The sweet tea wasn't as sweet as some places, but I'm not complaining; it was good, and the day was hot. There seemed to be a lot of staff working. I guess it can be busy on Saturdays for lunch. I visited around 2:30 pm, and it was not crowded when I arrived but picked up as my time went on. The staff didn't have anything to say as several walked past me while doing random things. Not that it's a bad thing; I just always acknowledged customers with a "how ya doing?"--little things. The music was a mix of classic rock, soft 70s to hair metal, set at a decent volume. I don't mind being able to hear the radio, but maw maw and paw paw may complain that it was too loud. The parking lot may fill up with a big dinner crowd as there is a business next door that shares the parking lot. There is handicap parking available. Overall, Martin's offered a cool atmosphere for BBQ and a relaxing meal. They offer live music some nights (check their website), and it seems to be a great place for socializing in a casual setting. 5/5 -Kevin

They were nice to bring my order to the car. The burger was cooked as requested and I loved all the toppings (red onion, lettuce, tomato, and pickles with ketchup and mayo. Oh, the fries were good! I love a good crinkle cut but these were delicious! Up next, Shrimp & Grits!!!

Friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and efficient. She got our drink order out quickly and even brought us a second basket of their delicious rolls without us having to ask once she saw how hungry my sons were. That alone earned major points in this family. All of our meals were prepared just as ordered, and London consistently made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. The entire experience felt warm and welcoming. The manager, whose name I unfortunately didn't catch, also stopped by the table to check on how our meal was going. What stood out most to me, though, was that the host who seated us, our server, and the manager all wished me a Happy Mother's Day. Such a small gesture, but it genuinely made the day feel even more special and appreciated.

They had so much more than I was expecting, but also had a wide variety of what they were serving! I will say It is a barbecue spot so obviously you have less options for those who don't eat meat. The staff is super nice and they handled me with quickness and attentiveness even with the line for that day! It did take a bit for my order to come out, but I do believe they make things as soon as it's ordered so everything definitely tasted fresh! Plenty of seating in this area and it's just a really good spot to try if you're looking for food on game night!

I left here fangry; full and angry. Did I just invent that term?…read more Three stars may be a little unfair, but hear me out. The good: - Nice, hip ambience - Fun menu - Quick service - Reasonable prices. BBQ is always a little pricey - Monster sized Dino rib portion. I was hungry coming in and still couldn't finish The Not: - This was my first day experiencing Birmingham heat and humidity. Even in the shade, I was starting to sweat. One could say this is not anybody's fault, but one could also say throw up some cool fan/mist devices for your patrons. - I think the location is next to a daycare of some kind, because there were a lot of kids there. One could also say this is not their fault, but there was a screaming one year-old next to me. Yay. It's not Delta's fault that a crying baby is seated next to me, but that doesn't change the flight experience. - The Dino rib looked amazing, but the flavor was lacking. Seasoning a piece of meat that big is a work of art. Too much salt, and it's too salty...But I probably would have preferred more flavor than too little, because then I'm dependent on the sauce. - The sauce was the watery vinegar kind. That might work for certain dishes, but the meat was so big, all of the sauce just runs right off it. Which basically means I'm not getting that flavor for the majority of the meal. Normally, on an amazing barbecue dish, I will eat till I hurt myself. lol I just ate till I was full and left a decent amount of meat left because the flavor just wasn't there. I could be biased, because I am from Texas and salt and pepper is king. - The mac & cheese was OK. It looked like they sprinkled some pre-shredded thick cut cheese on top, which honestly just looked lazy. - At this point, I was getting a little grumpy with the whole thing so the brisket beans was not gonna happen. - I was having order remorse, but then I remembered the whole reason I got the Dino rib, was because I wanted to see how good the pure barbecue was versus a selection masked with salsa and other toppings. - All of this would've been fine for $15, but $40 bucks with the tip and a pop... Nope. - I wasn't just grumpy about the price, I'm a big guy. I did not need those 2000 cal. That meant I couldn't eat dessert because my calorie limit was maxed. lol Pretty fun place though. I would give it one more shot and just try the brisket, and if that was not fantastic...I don't think I would go back again. If I'm gonna eat Mexican food, I'll just go to Taco Bell for a fraction of the price. I was talking to the front desk girl at my hotel, (fangry, I tell you) and she said "oh, yeah, there's no good barbecue in Birmingham." lol

I've tried the Sweet Tea Fried Chicken Sandwhich before and it was good BUT it was something different about this one. It was fried to "perfection" and the seasonings were on point. Since they also have a Conecuh Corndog I thought they would basically be mini corn dogs. Instead it was typical hushpuppies with small pieces of the sausage mixed in. Not bad but not quite what I was expecting. They also were a little greasier than I thought they should be. The pimento cheese & pepper jelly was a nice accompaniment and added to the flavor. Ultimately I will probably try something else next time. I got a side of the Mac N Cheese which is my usual go to at most all the locations. Banana Pudding is also good. It did not take long to order and food was ready pretty quickly. The Colonel (Sweet Tea Fried Chicken, Pimento Cheese, Tomato, Pickles & white BBQ sauce) is one of my favorites and my wife is a fan of the Smoked Chicken.
