Came on a saturday night around 5.15. Place was just getting ready for dinner service. Sat by the sushi counter. Service was prompt and food came out quickly. My MIL and 7yo son were impressed. We left by 6.30 and by that time, the place was filling up with a line out the door. So many parties with multiple children, which is wonderful. I had a great time and so did my MIL and son. Came here for lunch and sushi was cold like it was premade and came out of a fridge. Even the rice was very cold. Waitress asked the sushi chefs and they made a new one which was slightly less cold but was assembled poorly and the sushi was falling apart. The sashimi was still ice cold. I've ordered from here once and it was so-so but thought it would be better in person but I was wrong. Ate as quick as possible to get this over with and left. Fuji is a great spot in Needham. There hibachi is delicious and always fun for an event or special occasion since they can seat so many people. You can also sit in a normal table and just order off the menu. The employees are really nice and helpful. Also takeout is super efficient and reliable here. This might be my second review. We've been going here for sushi for years, and it's still great for service and quality.

Fuji was interesting last night. Walking in you immediately notice the stark silence - so much so that I asked the person seating us if they usually have music or that was normal. "We don't do that." Ok, to each their own! We were sat at a table with people who had already been served their salad and soup and were hungry (we knew because they told us over and over and over and over) so we delayed them getting their food and it was a bit awkward. The server came over to ask if we were ready to order immediately upon being sat, to which we had to reply 'no' as we had had the menu in front of us for .13 seconds. She came back roughly 42 seconds later and asked, "Ready now?" Sure. They brought us our drinks relatively quickly and soup and salad instantly. I got the plum wine which was absolutely incredible! I struggle to find plum wine around here so this may be the main reason I'll likely return. The 2nd reason I'll likely return is the offering of brown rice as a substitute to white fried rice. Thank you! They'll do the brown rice steamed or as fried rice and it was amazing as fried rice. The rest of the food was wonderful, too! The steak was cooked perfectly, the veggies were fresh and crisp, the shrimp was huge. Our chef was also very engaging and fun. The True Love Maki was very possibly the best sushi I've ever had. It tasted so good and was super fresh! They'll also do their sushi with brown rice which is a HUGE plus for me. The initial experience was less desirable but the food and the chef more than made up for it. My only disappointment was that the website offers soba noodles as an alternative to white rice also and when I ordered that she looked at me like I had 10 heads. Oh well, brown rice it was! I've gotten sushi twice at this restaurant, and my initial takeout last year was good in taste and size of the cut of fish. It was a large order of a mixture of nigiri sushi and sashimi. This recent order was tekka don and a side of spicy fried chicken wings. The food was good, but the sliced tuna in the tekka don was very thin and spread across the sushi rice. It was disappointing that they sliced it in what I would call almost hot pot style thin beef slices. It was more rice than tuna. The dish was not cheap at $31 either. For this price, I could get a larger block of sushi grade tuna at Wegmans. The chicken wings were fine, and I was satisfied, but not spicy even though they sprinkled some chile type powder on it. I'm not sure if I'll go back because of the cost and size of the cut if tuna. It's not worth it. read more

Came for an event, and Fuji exceeded my expectations. Very spacious and open interior with about 5 hibachi tables that could fit a good amount of people each. The prices are much lower than all the teppanyaki restaurants I've been to, so worth it!! The portions are very generous and food is delicious. The drinks are also super affordable. My date and i shared a sake bomb for only $20. It was enough for 3-4 sake bombs each! I got the steak and chicken combo. It came with a salad, fried rice, and veggies. The chicken was a bit too salty, but the steak was perfect. I also really enjoyed the fried rice and veggies. They gave A LOT. I don't think i even finished half, but the food was delicious. This review is written for the HIBACHI section only. I don't eat sushi, so I can't offer any input. The chef was talented, skilled, and hilarious. Whether squirting sake or 'baby sake' (water) into people's mouths, pretending to feed my friend's British boyfriend a raw egg, or using a train whistle as part of the onion volcano routine, he made the cooking process entertaining. The chicken was flavorful, and the fried rice was fulfilling. Minus one point because the soup and salad weren't great and were honestly unnecessary given the impressive nature of the rest of the meal. Pro tip: If you want free regular sake instead of baby sake squirted into your mouth (and you're like me and people think you look young for your age :/ ), show the hibachi chef your ID. 10/10 would recommend, free booze makes most of us smile. read more

$21.95 for a teppanyaki style dinner (steak & scallop) and a show, which I guess is okay. Someone at the table should order the fried rice for an extra $1.95 (vs white) so the chef will do a bit of a show when he cracks the egg for the fried rice. Just about every table had a child or three... they love the onion volcano! In addition to the previously mentioned steak and scallops and fried rice, my dinner arrived with an oniony broth with thin slices of mushrooms and scallions, a really fresh and tasty simple salad, three decently sized shrimp, a mix of veggies, and a serving of bean sprouts. The portion was okay, but I, who usually has leftovers, was able to completely decimate my plate. If it is your birthday, it looks like they bring over a fried ice cream and sing to you. So it is a nice choice for kids and birthdays. They also have a fish pond, and two private rooms for non-teppanyaki diners. Bathroom is a touch small - only two stalls in the ladies' room, and the menu online needs some updating. *** 12/2011 *** They have a few parking spots in the back, but it was filled when we got there. No worries, we were easily able to snag a metered spot out front. While waiting to be seated, I watched their large flat screen with the interesting facts running across the bottom of the screen. Once seated, our party of 7 was oddly provided with 3 menus, which made picking out our dishes an unnecessarily longer process. Also, the warm wet napkins were nice, but I would have preferred receiving them AFTER I ordered, so I wouldn't have to continue touching the menus with my temporarily cleaned hands. I went with the seaweed salad $6.95 and the House Udon $17.95 (Served with Miso Soup, Stir fried shrimp, scallop, fish, clam, fish cake, bean curd and vegetable.). I found the salad rather too seasoned - I wasn't sure if it was too salty or too spicy... and would avoid this in the future. But it was cutely served in a martini glass. The House Udon was a good portion - I even took some home! It was of course mostly udon noodles but the seafood portion was pretty decent, with (for example) 3 deshelled shrimp tossed in amongst the other good stuff. The miso soup that came with my entree was okay. But while I was watching the cooking show before me, a waitress swept my half full bowl away before I could stop her. As for the show, don't lean in too close - when the initial flame goes up, it gets pretty warm/hot. *** 12/2012 *** I went with the Filet Mignon & scallop teppanyaki style dinner, which came with miso soup, salad, 3 shrimp, the requested protein, veggies, and bean sprouts. Wait time on a Friday: Pretty long. Whatever they tell you (i.e. 15 mins) add 40 mins to it. They have a koi pond hidden in the inside which I didn't know about. Reason? Very nice servers but inefficient: they make the servers do stuff like opening your warm towel packet and offering it to you. Kind of awkward especially since it's the disposable types. Food: I expected the food to be hot and loaded with soy sauce. I got that. Performance: My chef was obviously a newbie but I was okay with that cause at least he tried hard to be good at it- and singed his hand in the process. Teppanyaki is a lost art these days and a dying industry it seems, at least in the Boston area. A shame really because looking past the gimmicky aspect of it, a meal cooked on a teppan (hot iron plate) can be wonderful and very enjoyable. And a lot of fun as well. Just don't confuse it with hibachi, which is not the same thing... On a brisk evening, in search of a place to have dinner, my girlfriend mentioned a spot in Needham that was apparently worth checking out and after a short drive, we arrived and proceeded to walk right in. Fuji Steak House is essentially two restaurants in one. On one side, to the right of the entrance is their sushi bar area where people sit at various, small tables and order some fresh sushi from the two chefs behind the counter. On the opposite end of the establishment there are three teppans where people are escorted and seated, and then place their orders. Unless you have a group large enough to cover the 10 or so seats around the horseshoe shaped teppan, chance are, you'll be assigned seats next to strangers but that's part of the fun really. I don't mind it personally. The menu at Fuji features all kinds of options and I couldn't decide between the chicken or the various types of beef offered so I decided to get their Mikado Special for $22 which featured both proteins alongside an onion broth, a side salad and some rice and vegetables. While we peeked at our menu our teppan's seats quickly filled up and soon everyone had placed their order. Fast-forward a few minutes and a chef rolled the cart over, introduced himself and got to work. The hood above the hot plate was turned on and within seconds he started to cooked the rice while we ate our soups ans salads. We opted for some fried rice and he did a few classic tricks as he cooked the food. I don't want to reveal anything as I don't want to spoil any first timer's experience but it was fun to watch although it's not any more original that what you'd see at other teppanyaki joints across the country. The rice, vegetables and meats were very tasty as were the girlfriend's Mai Tai cocktails. I had a few imported, Japanese beers with the meal. All in all the place was a lot of fun and a refreshing dining experience. Oh and in case you were wondering, yes, he did do the flaming onion volcano. While it's not cheap, it's also not that expensive and the service was pretty good although far from friendly and a bit pushy when it came to the drinks. read more

I eat here almost once a month - I loved it. Until tonight I got two rolls and rice - and it came to $20 dollars (so not cheap). I got home and everything tasted sour and like plastic I had to throw it out. I called just to let them know something was off - and I was told I was "wrong, that they cook the rice and sushi everyday, and they've never had any issues". That's fine - but if a repeat customer is telling you something is off I feel you should listen to them not try and discredit them. I've never had sushi or rice taste like that, and again I get it often. I would hate to see anyone get sick from eating this food. read more

Having Fuji Steak House being my only hibachi experience, I love it. The layout of the restaurant is very relaxing and welcoming. The staff there are very friendly and attentive and engaging. They have an area just for Sushi as well as hibachi. I am not a sushi fan so I stick to the Hibachi each time I visit. The cooks are very friendly and offer some cool tricks and humor while doing their thing. The Mai Tia's there are some of the best I have ever had. A great volume of liquor and juices and fresh fruit garment. The hibachi dinner here is quite filling. They start you off with this mushroom soup which is very good you can literally drink it up. Followed by a side salad with these awesome ginger like dressing, which has become one of my favorites. The dinner itself never fails. My first time there I tried the chicken teriaki and it was cooked perfect and tasty. The most recent times there I go for the Steak or Filet Mignon and it's always cooked the way you want it. Medium for me. The combo steak/chicken is my favorite. You get both and the portions are huge. It is served with mixed veggies, fried shrimp, and white rice, or fried rice for an extra 2.50. The fried rice is worth the extra 2.50, trust me. They have some of the best fried rice I have ever had and you just want to bring some home. This place is a food coma waiting to happen. Impossible to be hungry after leaving here, even though you may want some Fro-yo. They are on Groupon and Living Social a lot, so if you do go here check on there first for a voucher. We were very disappointed on our recent visit. We visit Fuji about once a year. My children (two boys ages 13 and 11) recently returned from summer camp and wanted to go. I must say that upon entering we were struck by the fact this place really seems to have hit the skids. The decor and atmosphere really seems to have seen better days. It is a bit seedy and worn. It has that sticky feeling everywhere you turn. Once seated, our server was abrupt when arriving to take our drink order. Upon leaving us she ran about the restaurant like a chicken with its head cut off (perhaps they were understaffed, but I think it was simply inefficiency.) If she were productive it would have been fine, but she just seemed to be inefficient and abrupt. Our drink order did not appear for a very long time (the waitress finally mentioned to us, in passing, that they were busy, yet they did not appear to be that busy to us.) Once the drinks arrived, we finally got to put in our food order. The food was good, although we feel overpriced and not a very good value. The soup was a very watered down, non-descript broth with a few sliced mushrooms and scallions in it. The salad was a very small, but seemingly fresh, bowl of iceberg lettuce and one cherry tomato. The utensils provided are chopsticks and a fork, but we needed a knife to cut the large pieces of lettuce, so it could be eaten without seeming "inelegant." The meal was, to be fair, tasty, however, the portion control seemed to vary quite a bit from plate to plate. We all - including my two boys - left being quite disappointed with the overall experience. I don't think we will return unless there is an effort to make improvements in the overall experience. We normally have had the best dinners here. This is my fiancé's daughters favorite restaurant. I was born and raised in needham and we have loved this place. We come back six months later (because we moved out of town) trying to get a whole group together (thank god that didn't work out) because it was the WORST hibachi meal we have ever had at any place including this one we brag about. Guess what..no more bragging. Best rice went to worst rice. Best chicken went to worst overcooked fish tasting chicken. Best chefs went to worst chef who barely did anything for a 9 year old. Over $100 for three of us and worst I've ever had there or any hibachi. I've told everyone to go there until this day. We will never go back. I think one of the worst meals in a long while. This used to be our family's "GO TO" for special occasions...bdays...first day of school celebrations. With a change of ownership has come a big change in quality with the same crazy prices. The hibachi show for the kids was fine but I could have saved some money because the chicken, shrimp and beef all tasted the same...AWFUL! We got an apology and they quickly brought out some hard chicken from the kitchen that was not edible! & After reminding the waitress twice about the birthday dessert, she only came with the full bill, NOT the dessert! I had to leave our table with the bill to speak to the manager and he then took the meal off the bill- after showing my frustration. This review is for takeout/delivery only. I used to order out a lot from here, but over time the quality and service has gone down. Quite disappointing as it was a great place before. Really uncomfortable as a customer when they make mistakes on the order. In lieu of admitting and correcting and just fixing it's a process of almost investigative quality to make sure it really occurred. If you've ever worked in a restaurant, you are probably familiar with the staff meal. Essentially, the kitchen whips up a modest repast for servers and crew, usually before the shift begins. I'm bringing this up because I'm pretty sure that the staff meal at Fuji Steak House was spiked with methamphetamine. Each server, each chef was charged with a frantic energy, culminating in the single goal of getting us the hell out of there. Allow me to backtrack. I came here with family and friends to celebrate my Dad's birthday. The first odd thing was our seating arrangement. Each chair was squished tightly next to its neighbor, essentially turning the seating process into a pickup game of Twister. I was glad I had showered and used my *good* deodorant, as my neighbors and I were about to get up close and personal. (You guys might want to try the sniff test before coming here.) It was as if a starting pistol was fired. Our server bustled over, much like a thoroughbred out of the gate, asking for our drink order. The expression on her face was as if someone had farted. I was a little perplexed, as there was no drink menu, but figured 'what the hell,' and ordered a glass of cabernet and some water, the latter I had to request a few times to procure. As soon as the drinks were served it became clear that it was time to order dinner. Now. No delay. Indecision would not be tolerated. Our chef arrived, and he really wasn't that interested in displaying the kind of showmanship I've seen at other Japanese steak houses. Things actually seemed to go a little awry, as random bits of food began to soar in the wrong direction, some landing on the floor. Dinner was served in a haphazard fashion, with some folks at the table receiving waaay too much food, while others wound up with a sliver of zucchini and an anemic portion of protein. Once the food was hastily cooked, our chef pretty much fled. And actually, the fare was really, really good. I truly enjoyed my dinner. Well, the taste, at least. Within twenty minutes, various staff members were attempting to wrest our plates from our hands. I guess they were tweaking. Meth does that, you know. "You done yet? You done yet?" was the repeated quasi-command. I finally gave up trying to finish my dinner and surrendered my plate. Let's pause for a moment. I'm trying to give you a general idea of how rushed we were, how we were practically pushed out the door. I know it seems a little nit picky. And if it were only this, the food itself would have allowed for at least a two or three star review. It takes a lot to piss me off. Really. What truly made this a one star experience was that as they barreled down the aisle, the manager and some other random server practically ran over my 87 year old, widowed grandmother as she tried to get out of her chair. The woman is like, four foot eight inches tall, and maybe 90 pounds soaking wet. She needlepoints, for the love of god. I honestly don't care if the staff is rude to me. They can snap at me, throw food at my head, and criticize my shoes. I can take it. But mess with my Nana, and that crosses a line. Don't. Fuck. With. My. Nana. I'm a nice gal, and I try to offer the benefit of the doubt to someone who offends me. Therefore I'm convinced that there must have been a reason why Batman and Robin were ok with knocking an octogenarian aside - obviously they were trying to save a baby seal from being clubbed. Or maybe they needed to lift a tractor off some paraplegic children. Or maybe they were hell bent on rescuing a throng of Cambodian lepers. I mean, there's got to be SOME REASON why it was acceptable to get rough with my grandma. So in the end, while I do feel the indelicate treatment of my only surviving grandparent warrants one star, I bestow this dubious honor upon Fuji Steak House because they have miscreants clubbing seals, a colony of lepers, and mistreated challenged people tucked away somewhere in the recesses of their kitchen. I mean, that's just weird. And not really professional. Reality is harsh. I know. The moral? Drugs kill, man. read more

Used to frequent this establishment a couple times a month until both me and my wife got severe food poisoning there. We were told by our doctors after 5 days of hell (not an exaggeration) that we got a staff food poisoning which can kill you. Whatever was on the grill that day was contaminated and now I will never eat hibachi ever again. We got sick in the winter of 2013 but just writing the review now. Not sure what the negative reviews are about, love this place! This is honestly one of my favorite restaurants on the planet. I grew up in Medfield and work in the general area. I've been to Fuji Steakhouse about 25 times over the past 10 years and love every occasion. I'll say pretty much the only thing I don't like is the minimal and kind of awkward parking available in the side alley and back of the restaurant. But when you walk in the place is immaculate, beautifully decorated, and everything seems very new. The service is incredible, the food is all very tasty, and their selection is excellent. I've gone many times for the hibachi and a few times for just the sushi, and both are great. They have good lunch deals as well. The hibachi cooks do an excellent job cooking, performing, and cleaning up afterwards. All in all, a great restaurant that is making me hungry just writing about it. 5 Stars for sure! read more

Awful experience and totally disappointed!!! We got the hibachi. The food was was very salty. EVERYTHING was loaded with soy sauce and MSG. The veggies meaning soy beans was cooked on the hot plate with a large spoonfuls of soy sauce. If you are on a diet this is not a place to go. Everything was cooked on that large grill, everything tasted the same. Portion size was not equalivant to everyone else. The largest size person on the table will get the most and the girls will get the least. Thank goodness I had a Groupon because $21 per person is not worth it at all. Totally sucked! And I was sad that the person I brought to experience this was his first time doing hibachi. It was cool to see the chief do all his tricks but it was only a 5 minute thing. Best thing was the salad. Let me preface this by saying that I am fussy when it comes to restaurants. I travel for business frequently and dine out a lot, so I tend to be a harsh critic. I have visited Fuji Steak House several times now and have always been satisfied. I find the staff attentive and polite, the decor clean and modern, the chef entertaining, and the food delicious (my food experience here has been exclusive to the teppenyaki). Other reviewers have complained about the decor being seedy, or worn. I didn't find it that way at all. No, it doesn't have the glitter and glamour of Benihana in its heyday, but Fuji really is very nice, and especially so for a neighborhood restaurant.
