Ice water is ridiculous in the winter, and it's also disgusting with germs. I got you nice salmon, teriyaki lunch, special, which comes with two things that need to be dipped, but no sauce for them. Comes with broccoli and carrot that needs to be cut, but no knife. Carrot was not quite cooked. Soup and salad were good. Salmon dinner was excellent. Prices are decent. Picked this restaurant for a special occasion to go somewhere more fancy than usual. It didn't disappoint. It's a fairly small dining area but upscale and has an intimate atmosphere. They give you the little shrunken hand towels for your table. They have a range of appetizers that are unique; I like that their menu has things you don't see everywhere. We ordered pickled vegetables which were interesting, and the wasabi shumai (I recommend this - shumai but with a kick). We ordered 5 rolls which is a good amount for two. Their signature roll is delicious and comes with a sauce that adds some sweetness and flavor compared to soy sauce. The other rolls were also very tasty, and inventive. I don't remember the names but you can't go wrong. The fish is high quality, melt-in-your-mouth. I would certainly come back here for other occasions. Food was just OK, nothing particularly special. Service was the most memorable part of our visit ... and not in a good way. We felt like we inconvenienced our waitress by asking about the daily special and had to actually ask for soy sauce with our sushi. We never saw our waitress after she took our order, but support staff was attentive with water refills. We waited 15 min and finally had to ask for our check. In contrast, the table next to us sat down after we did and received their check before we did (same waitress, same size table). We have been loyal customers for years, enjoying the superb authentic Japanese cuisine always served with excellent presentation We are big fans of ramen noodles and always asked for them to have ramen on the menu. Finally they have! This is the best ramen in town with perfectly cooked noodles in a great rich soup with the most tender braised beef brisket in Pinot noir sauce. Unbelievable. Unfortunately, we sat at the sushi bar. The decline becomes explainable. I thought that the sushi and sashimi is pedestrian at best. Raw fish should never be pre-cut. Here they do. Even worse, the collection of sushi cutters (I cannot call them chefs) keep chatting while preparing raw fish. Great to get a free side of saliva. Now Daikanyama is out. Don't get me wrong. The age-dashi tofu is very good. The miso soup is low in salt (healthy but not my preference). Nice that they serve Echigo beer. But there are much better choices within driving distance. we were excited at first because surprisingly the salad that came with the entree was really delicious and fresh. the dressing was pretty good. The miso soup wasn't salty at all, it was just right. Then came the agedashi tofu, which was really different because they put mushrooms in it. We also wanted to try the grilled pork belly. But that six tiny pieces definitely was not worth it. It was a bit dry too. We were disappointed with the pork belly. Then our platter and our maki came. The platter was a good decent size and good amount of sushi and sashimi till we saw the maki rolls. They were even smaller than kids size, it was definitely smaller than an adult's thumb. We were extremely disappointed with the size of the sushi itself. Daikanyama seemed to have a good rating, and most of the food was good, but there were some major failures also. The Age-Dashi tofu was good but only had a very light coating. Would have also been nice to have some daikon radish in the sauce. And I had the pork katsu for my main dish. The pork was nicely breaded but thin. What was worse though, is that the "tonkatsu" sauce was sweet and the exact same sweet sauce used for the Kaki (oyster) Fry. Tonkatsu sauce is NOT suppose to be sweet. Also they put mayonnaise mixed in with the shredded cabbage, another no-no! I was truly hoping for an authentic Japanese meal, but I think I got an Americanized version. read more

Big fan of Daikanyama. When i found this gem in Lexington, my gf mentioned that there was one inside the Bloomingdales in Chestnut Hill. The sushi is solid and fresh. The sushi rice is seasoned perfectly. The wagyu beef tataki is delicious. They give you pictures of the apps on a samsung tablet. Great service and great food. Daikanyama is located in the Bloomingdales. If you're entering Bloomingdales from the parking lot, the Forty Carrots is on the left and Daikanyama is on the right. I ate here tonight with very low expectations. After all, it's a Japanese restaurant in a mall. It must be expensive and not very good, right? Au contraire! We got adedashi tofu, tatsute age, avocado salad, whole grilled squid, green dragon maki, and white catepillar maki. Everything was very tasty! I especially liked the avocado salad and the whole grilled squid. If I had one thing to complain about, it was that the maki was a bit on the smaller side. I'm giving this place a two star rating based on the overall performance in food, service and price. The restaurant is located next to one of Bloomingdales' entrance. Very prime location for ppl who shop there. I stopped by to pick up something quick for a bite in the middle of afternoon. The wait staff here are pretty cold and they make you feel you're a burden to them. When you request something, they would say yes and not do anything. Btw, this is a Chinese run Japanese restaurant trying to appear high end but they really aren't. So don't get fooled. I ordered a roll, and it tasted super duper average but they charge me $18 for that stupid roll with shrimp tempura, unagi and avocado. What a rip off! Won't return again! read more

FYI, Daikanyama is a luxury shopping neighborhood in Tokyo. (I would not have known this without consulting Wikipedia.) Sticking with the analogy, the Chestnut Hill version of Daikanyama is situated with entrances next to and inside Bloomingdale's. The interior vibe is like a mini Fugyaku-- waterfall installations, modern design, and a private booth for 8 or so with sliding doors smack in the middle of the dining area. After seeing the exterior last week, I called up Grandma and we ventured here for a geriatric dinner just before 5 pm this week. We were given warm towels to wash our hands before eating, and were served a complimentary bowl of edamame-- nice touch. Our server was a bit awkwardly attentive and kept repositioning my plates through the meal, but he was courteous enough. I opted for a sushi combination plate to avoid needing to make many decisions. (I was tempted to order a pumpkin tempora roll, though.) I added a side of saba sashimi as well. One complaint on the sushi plate is it played things safe; I had maybe 7 pieces of nigiri, and 4 were salmon/tuna, plus the sushi roll it came with was plain tuna as well. I was glad I ordered a side of mackarel to mix things up a bit. Many entrees, mine included, are served with a salad and miso soup. Both tatsy. I would have ordered a sweet potato roll (my new fave) if they had one. Their dishware and utensils are funky yet usable. The iced green tea was super duper green-- I think it had matcha. Yum! For dessert, we tried the creme brulee, which had a nice coffee flavor to it. I had a piece of the tofu cheesecake, which our server said was quite popular. It was quite light and I didn't feel super guilty ordering dessert. The price tag certainly wasn't small, but the fish was good and fresh, and the atmosphere was nice. read more

Its pretty much a table surround by glass windows an a wood frame. Privacy without the privacy since every just stares in hahaa. Kinda cool though...never seen that before.. Their food was good but i feel as if the serving sizes were small. I got the black pork katsu and it was not like any katsu ive ever experienced before. Usually the katsus are cut up thinner and because of that are more dry. At this place, they only had several cuts and the katsu was juicy as hell. Walking into fancy decor and pretentious atmosphere, I was expecting upscale overpriced and disappointing meal. However, I was glad to be proven wrong. For lunch, Daikanyama is a great deal! All lunch specials include miso soup and salad. I really enjoyed the miso dressing on the salad and the simplicity of the miso soup. I ordered the black pork tonkatsu. It came quickly, with white rice and some other sides. For the pork tonkatsu, the outside was crispy and the inside was moist and flavorful. The sauce for the pork tonkatsu was also amazing! There were a small side of fruits that completed the meal. I would definitely recommend this place. The service was also very thoughtful and courteous. While I can't speak to a dinner experience here, this place is a great spot for lunch! read more

A classy spot in a classy neighborhood/mall area. Typical! We were handed a NOOK for the special menu. Boy, this is clever! Everything on the tablet does look better! The pictures are so vibrant and just look so yummy so we had to order 3 special rolls. I was skeptical because pictures are just pictures. Let's see if the sushi chef could really impress me with presentation! Wow...presentation, presentation! All the rolls we ordered looked amazing and exactly like promised in the pictures. They are "Ghost Eyes", "Mango Sake Ball", and something "Geisha"!!! I spent too much time taking pictures of them and could not eat them at first because they are too pretty! The fish quality here is not the best or the freshest. The taste is not as amazing as I expected but over all, food did earn about 3.5 stars. The waitress that took my order got it wrong 2 times. I tried to understand because she looked like she was new or there might be a little language barrier. The manager was nice enough to give us ginger and green tea ice cream later to apologize. I had a nice experience dining here. It's a lovely space, with waterfalls all around as the decor. The staff was also very professional and friendly. However, the prices were definitely on the steep side. I was trying to order enough to fill me up but everything was so expensive. I understand that sushi is a luxury but chicken teriyaki or udon noodles shouldn't be. They should have some expensive and some cheaper items otherwise there's just not much that's attainable. However the four rolls we got were wonderful! In the photo with the dots is the cherry blossom, in the other photo is the Black Forest, the green dragon and the nori roll?
