The diningroom was. Right with front windows. The entry at was broken off from the main dining room. It reminded me of Japan with wall escentuated by wooden strips. They have banners with Japanese symbols adjacent to the sushi bar. I had the udon with mixed vegetables and chicken. Yum. I wish I had more of it. High quality sushi spot serving great fish in a welcoming setting. Foods: I've ordered pick up a number of times and the Sushi for 2 Combo has been such a treat and consistently good. All of the rolls and nigiri are prepared very well and the unique fish flavors really come through. Service: The front of house is always super pleasant and the speed of the kitchen staff astound me. I ordered pickup around early dinner and they had my order ready in almost 10 minutes. Not only was the dining area filled seated there were piles of pickup orders beside mine. The atmosphere here is really nice and more traditional than the new breed of similar places...cold and contemporary. It can be a bit "cozy" but has a great warm vibe too. I'd like to give 5 stars but the food and service (all business, all the time), never gets quite up to where it could / should be. Pricing is also just more than the dishes and overall setting would indicate or deserving! That said, I think it is worth a visit. read more

Restaurant workers are allowed to eat meals. And they're allowed to eat meals in attractive space - like the restaurant itself, rather than in the kitchen. But restaurant workers eating their meals should not impinge on the enjoyment of diners. Today, while we were eating a late lunch, a restaurant worker ate his lunch and played a TV show on his phone without earbuds. We didn't want to hear the TV show, especially when it clashed with the recorded jazz. And, not finding a morsel to his liking, he spit it out on his plate. Yuck. read more

Absolutely the best sushi in the Greater Boston area, especially for vegetarians. They have a large selection of very creative vegetarian rolls, fantastic edamame, addictive house salad dressing. We used to live down the street but now live half an hour away and yet we still come at least once a month. read more

A Japanese Restaurant should have good moist rice. That's just Rule #1. At this visit, the rice was dry. Like it was yesterday's rice. Dry rice affects the sushi, the bento box, maki - you can't not have good rice at a Japanese Restaurant. That's just super disappointing. The Tempura was decent, but could be lighter on the batter. I live in Newton, I so would love a good Japanese Restaurant. I hope the owner reads this and make improvement because I'd love to come back, it's close to my house. Food is not as good as a few years ago, but price and service is still very good. Glad they have lots of vegetarian rolls, some restaurants offer less. Would love to see them innovate in desserts, appetizers, etc. read more

The sushi deluxe platter had a lot of variety, but I wish the sushi were more flavorful. The eel was decent, but the salmon, tuna, hamachi should have been a bit fresher with more flavor. The mackerel actually had a bit of fishiness flavor to it. The scallop hotate hokkaiyaki, a baked scallop dish with mushrooms and mayo, was actually quite nicely flavored and roasted; this was likely the best dish consumed this evening. The seafood udon noodle had some issues; the broth was both a bit too salty and sweet, with an odd aftertaste; the seafood bits were a bit small, though they were generous with their baby shrimp and bay scallops. The agedashi (fried) tofu was also a bit small, with none of the flakiness and crunchiness that one typically finds in this dish. read more

Haven't been here in a few years. Was happy to see that their quality and service was still on point. Sashimi was very fresh. We also got 2 spicy salmon handrolls (forgot to take a pic until we got to our last bite) - big full pieces of salmon and not the grind up one like some places). The pork katsu had the perfect amount of crunch and not overly oily. The meat inside was not hard or dried. Ikura was fresh but also a bit sweet compared to others. We had wanted the Hamachi kama, but they were out so we got the Hotate Hokkaiyaki. This was done very differently compared to other places. It wasn't bad but not something I would get here again. read more

My friend and I have eaten here a few times. It's fine for the most part. Recently we ordered the Chilean Sea Bass. For $39!! We split it due to the price but were hoping it would be outstanding. Oh well. For $39 it should have been excellent. The fish was very tasty but it came with these chunks of carrots and broccoli that were steamed and tasteless. We asked the waitress specifically if the sauce was sweet and she said no. It was SO SWEET! We tried scraping it off. I like J.P Seafood in Jamaica Plain where for $22 you get a big chunk of Mahi Mahi fish and a lovely medley of lots of veggies in a tasty sauce. You don't get the miso soup or salad but I'd skip that for the lower price and much better food. I'd say this dish at Aji is $10 overpriced. read more

When in the east coast Aji Sushi Abt Newton , Boston Gotta have some good uni and salmon roe. Chunks of goodies at a fairly reasonable price. Pretty fresh too Craved sushi and got some take out with friends. It took just 15mins from calling to pickup. Got the Sushi Deluxe for $20, comes with a miso soup and salad. Also ordered uni, tobiko, and salmon roe as extras. I liked the deluxe set that came with a California roll + salmon, Hamachi, tuna, unagi (eel), shrimp. Aji rocks! Their sushi is fresh and inventive. Their cooked food is also wonderful. And their prices are reasonable and definitely worth it. They refreshed their interior and it's bright and inviting. The wait staff are always professional and attentive. This is not some corporate franchise but a true gem. Went last weekend, there was barely a fleck of fish in any of our rolls and the sahimi and nigiri portions were sooooo small. Sad. Quality fine, staff was super nice. Aji will definitely fill your sushi craving! We ordered through their online system and got delivery, which was simple and easy to follow. We ordered unaju, pork katsu curry, unagi maki, spider maki, summer maki, and baked spicy scallop maki. The unaju and the pork katsu came with a side of salad and miso soup. There were salad dressing and soy sauce in little containers, but unfortunately no curry sauce. This made it slightly upsetting since the pork was a little dry, but all the other dishes we got were great! I love that the unaju had lots more extra radish/plums than I expected. The summer maki definitely had an overpowering sweet chili sauce, which made it a bit too sweet for my liking. I really enjoyed the scallop maki, it had a slight spice to it that gave it some extra flavor. The spider maki had crispy, crunchy crab that made it a delight to eat. The food here is solid in terms of maki. I cannot comment on their nigiri or sashimi fish pieces. It's not the best nor the worst, but one of the better sushi places around in terms of makis. I think the maki here tastes better than New Ginza & Super Fusion. Staff are attentive and prices are reasonable. No complaints. Def better sushi elsewhere in the greater Boston area (Toraya, Daikanayama, Oishii) but i'll order from here instead of new ginza & super fusion. read more

Ordered takeout from here as we were looking for better sushi place. Man, this place is amazing! We got the Crazy maki, Aji Special Tuna Torch Maki, rainbow maki, & spicy tuna, salmon & yellow tail. Everything was very fresh and very tasty. I mean even the wasabi and pickled ginger was great. Definitely will be our new sushi spot. They had parking for a couple of restaurants behind the building but there is only a few spaces available as they're using most of it for outdoor dining. I managed to find parking five minutes away but if I went on the weekend it could be more of a pain. read more

Traditional bento boxes and beautiful hand rolls in a cozy, wood paneled setting with a huge selection of sake and wine make for a special place. Friendly service, quick service. Our favorite sushi place! Every roll we have eaten is decadent and memorable and the saki and green tea got us through the winter.

I am bummed. Literally just picked up from them and had high hopes. Everything we got tasted kinda old. Not stale, but the rice was tasteless and dry, the fish was slimy and everything tasted exactly the same. They dumped a ton of roe on everything, i think hoping it would hide the taste of the rest. Hate that i just spent 75 dollars and my husband is going to Anna's taqueria since we aren't eating any more than one piece each. Again, i am just supremely bummed. I love sushi. But i didn't love this sushi. Ordered the king, Phoenix, new wave, special tuna, some salmon tempura roll and a couple of others. But my mouth has a bad aftertaste now... blech. Bummed. read more

I wanted to love this place, simply because it's a 5 min walk from my house. To be honest, the sushi wasn't all that great. I cannot put my finger on it, simply that it didn't taste all that fresh. One example, we tossed in a Shrimp Tempura roll, just to mix it up (I know, it's not real sushi). The shrimp was soggy, not crispy at all. It's like it had been sitting there for a while. The rice was also paste-y. For my money, I'd rather go up to Edamame in Newton, next to Stop and Shop. That place always has good sushi. read more
