I had not been here in yeeeeears. A group of us were trying to hit China Rainbow on their last week before closing but that was absolute chaos so we diverted to Rice Valley. The food was phenomenal. Appetizer staples like beef teriyaki and chicken fingers came out hot and fresh. The spicy wantons in peanut sauce are AMAZING. The beef with green pepper and onion was delicious. Other people in the group got sesame beef and also the beef with satay sauce in sizzling hotpot which i was told was amazing and looked incredible. A couple of notes -- They were giving paper takeout menus to tables when seating. They have a full bar but no drink menu. One person in our party got a standard cocktail but it was made wrong. Its weird and quiet inside so everyone can hear everyone's conversation. For entertainment we got to hear a married couple squabble about cell phone use at the table lol. Like I said, I hadnt been here in a really long time ... possibly 2019? Now in 2025 they were using paper takeout menus at tables and the sushi prep area was not being used. The first thing that struck me was the price. It a restaurant is expensive it usually has to do with location. If the rent is expensive, the food is pricey. Plenty of seating. When you walk through the door, the dining room and bar are hidden from view by decorated windows. The portion size if plenty large but it is included in the price. I thought it had lots of atmosphere. The moment I walked through the door, I thought I was in China. The food was delicious but I would still try another place. Got takeout from rice valley. They're consistently solid. Food isn't greasy, and is very flavorful. They had the order up super fast too. Very friendly. Only complaint is the price, but that's pretty consistent everywhere nowadays. read more

The hot and sour soup was good and had diced green onion on top; a key sign I look for of a decent Chinese food restaurant. I I have been to Rice Valley many times for both dine-in and takeout, and it is always a decent meal. It is an 8 on an 8 scale, as in this place does not have the upside to be a 10. The food is consistently good, never bad, and always dependable. The menu has plenty of variety with lots of vegan options. I have had the Lo Mein, Fried Rice, General's Chicken, General's Tofu, Pu Pu Platter, and more. Everything has been flavorful, well-prepared, and enjoyable. The Scorpion Bowls are also a nice touch if you want a drink with your meal. Service is always fast and friendly. There is a steady pick-up business, but plenty of tables available if you want to eat in. The ambiance is basic but clean and functional, which works well for a casual meal. Overall, Rice Valley delivers exactly what you expect every time. It is a reliable choice and I will continue coming back. read more

I had forgotten about this older review I wrote. That friend I mentioned, who liked Rice Valley better than me, and I went there recently, after a long while away, and we were especially looking forward to their cold noodles in peanut sauce, an appetizer but historically a large portion. What a disappointment. The sauce was OK, but instead of a delicate noodle--even a lo mein--it came with thick ungainly noodles, like Udon on steroids, and basically ruined the dish. What was fascinating is that this dish was one of the cheapest on the menu, at $10.50, whereas most other apps (apps!) were $15. Just odd. And as for the prices in general, they've raised them to absurd levels. All restaurants are being forced to raise prices, and because I understand the reasons, I am sympathetic and don't complain. And we know the extortion restaurants face from the meal delivery companies. However, there are limits, and we just hit one here. I don't think we're coming back. The food generally is good, not great, but not worth those prices. And they ruined one of their best dishes. read more

Rice Valley used to be the best Chinese food in Newton before it was bought out by GrubHub. They had high-quality ingredients incredibly fast delivery and made some of the best Chinese food outside of Chinatown Because of the high-quality it was worth the very expensive price. Since being bought out by GrubHub last month, they have two hour delivery times, the quality of the food has gone completely downhill shows up cold soggy not fresh ingredients. It is too bad to see them sell out to corporate. Good news Dings in Newton center and Lobster Wok are still excellent restaurants in Newton that deliver quickly and are great are quality. read more

Finally came here 3 months ago for the 1st time & IDK why their ratings aren't higher. Must be a bunch of haters. For American Chinese cuisine, tough to get much better in Greater Boston. Excellent Hot & Sour soup. Dumplings (we had once were decent but this place has the 2nd best Gai Poo Lo Mein of ANY Chinese Restaurant in Greater Boston. New to the area, we ordered takeout on Sunday 4/23. HUGE disappointment. First, they charge premium prices. Over $70 for 3 entrees, white rice, and a vegetable. Now...the flavors were GOOD! However, for the 2 entrees and vegetable, here's our experience: Chicken with Ginger and scallion. That dish was 60+% cheap white onion. Good amount of chicken, maybe a single scallion cut up. See photo of remaining pile of onion after we removed the good stuff. Pork Lo mein. Super stingy with the tiny strips of pork. Really? See photo, accurate representation of pork/lo mein proportions. Chinese jade broccoli. Pretty much raw. The usually juicy stalks were hard as a rock, and the leafy top parts were so tough and chewy they were inedible. We are very familiar with Asian cuisines. Usually, we are a take-out family, but we went into the restaurant a few weeks ago, and the service was terrible. I didn't think anything of it. We all have rough days. Today, my daughter was walking by and saw a help-wanted sign. She went into the restaurant and asked for an application. The front desk said, 'wait here, and I'll get someone to talk with you. Came here because the restaurant I usually go to was closed. I ordered the fried rice with sausage. The rice came out really quick, but it didn't even look fried. It just looked like plain steamed white rice. If you are going to call that fried rice, then you must be blind. There was also no music, so I could hear the people at the other table talking. Extremely disappointing. I tried this restaurant for the first time tonight. I'm making an effort to support local eateries, and thought I would give Rice Valley a try. The food was a bit more expensive, but I do understand that this year has been tough for many so decided to go for it anyway. What a mistake! My order came after 60 minutes (delivery). The food itself was fine...not fabulous but not bad...but was missing some things in the order. I called them back to let them know and to ask to get the missing items. He wanted to credit me, but we needed the appropriate dishes for the number of people eating. He reluctantly agreed to send the driver with the missing items. After 90 more minutes, I called them back because nothing had arrived. They agreed to refund my money for the missing items, but this was completely unacceptable. This was not my error and they really needed to make it right by delivering the food as quickly as they reasonably could. Again, I understand that it is difficult to run a restaurant right now. So why would you alienate new customers? Ridiculous. Don't go here. read more

Atmosphere -It has a nice elegant feel to it. Its casual enough that you can go here for lunch, but fancy enough that you could take a date here without getting her pissed off. Customer Service -It was good. I have nothing to complain about and nothing to praise on. Food -This place is very hit or miss. The first time I came here the food was excellent, though a lot of the dishes didn't come with rice (for example the chicken and broccoli) which I thought was odd. It was annoying because ordering a side of rice inflated an already high price. The meal was very good though. Times I've had take out has been hit or miss. Sometimes it ends up being very dry. The last time I ordered the sauce from my Sweet and Sour chicken had an odd after taste. But like I said, its hit or miss because sometimes it'll come and be delicious. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place for takeout because sometimes they do get the food quite wrong, but when they get it right its delicious. Huge disappointment My partner had bragged about this restaurant for years, and last night we finally had dinner here. It was not at all as she had remembered Warning lights should have gone off as soon as we walken in the door, 6:30 on a Saturday night and not a single table was occupied ( except for the bar) We ordered Rangoons Scallion pancakes House special fried rice Chow Foon According to my lady, when she had been there in the past, they were overstuffed and crispy. Last night flat, miniscule amount of stuffing, bland and greasy. Scallion pancakes were slightly below average...not the worst I've had, but far from the best House special fried rich was nothing special. A fre peas, a few tiny shrimp, and small pieces of chicken..very disappointing abd for $15.....NO WAY Chow Foon ( chow fun) always my favorite until last night. Some sort of a thick gravy covering everything, overpowering and far from tasty. Although it was listed under noodles, they were few and far between. To add insult to injury we ordered pork and was served chicken. Didn't bother returning it, it not like we'd ever be coming back again My date's comment, "I can't believe how far downhill they've gone in 3 years." Even the owner (or the manager) who was there wouldn't respond except to nod in my direction and send the waitress to see what I wanted. I blame the management -- they just don't have enough wait staff -- can't have 8 or more tables being served by one waitress. I grew up in Newton, living off of Rice Valley. I have since moved away and lived in various parts of the country. I can CONFIDENTLY say that Rice Valley is the best Chinese food in the nation. We ordered a variety of dishes- 5 entrees in total- and all except the Orange Flavored Chicken were VERY bland and flavorless, even additional soy sauce did little to provide any taste. The orange chicken was edible, however very sweet and did not come with rice. The noodle dishes contained a fair amount of vegetables , but minimal protein.
