The food is pretty good without being memorable. I had a Reuben with very good corned beef slathered with some Velvetta-like substance. My wife had a ham and cheese sandwich that was very salty even though it was not country ham. Prices are very reasonable and there are a lot of real 'Merican choices on the menu. Well once we finally got waited on, it was ok. We waited forever without anyone even acknowledging us. Another customer told us we can seat ourselves, despite the sign indicating to *wait here*. As cafes go for breakfast, this is a cut above most. I had baked Virginia ham, creamy grits, buttered toast, and fresh scrambled eggs, solid coffee, $8.15! Good deal and good food. The grits were perfect and really creamy, not watery or sticky. Grits are the cornerstone of any southern breakfast. If you don't believe me watch My Cousin Vinnie when he asks the cook, "what exactly is a grit?" Great scene but all true! This place totally passed the grit test! Best cafe food ever! Located in the heart of the sweetest old town you can imagine is this roomy cafe with most of its old construction intact. Fantastic burger in a great bun. Our second visit here today. My boyfriend really enjoyed their diner style food. Especially the crinkle cut fries. We had strawberry shakes - they were delicious. Real ice cream, perfectly blended. We had burgers, chicken tenders & fries. My bf raved about the tenders. I still think it's mediocre cafeteria food but to each it's own. The staff are all very nice & caring. Ive heard good things about this place growing up around and in Culpeper. I finally decided to see what it's like today with my fiancé and though Im sure this local favorite lives up to its expectations, I was thoroughly disappointed with the service. We not only seated ourselves after about an awkward minute passed with us trying to get the attention of the servers (who were busy making conversation at the bar), but after a solid 10 minutes in a booth, we waited until eventually leaving because no one even bothered to ask us what we wanted to drink. I don't want to base my review based off of one bad visit (or perhaps, a bad day at the cafe) but not another diner in Culpeper has done this to us. Im sure the food is... probably good? Out for a morning excursion to see the sights and was struck by the decor as we walked by. I saw the sign for "cash only" and after quickly checking to see that we had enough to pay for even my large appetite, ventured inside. The interior is reminiscent of a 50s era diner, but without the polish or chrome. More like a grand old doll who is past her prime but still thinks she "has it" and no one could be rude enough to the old girl to tell her the truth. A family-run place that could benefit from a reading of the VA food regulations or a visit from the Department of Health. Hats or hairnets would be nice. Also, some thought to separating the food from potentially unclean items like wiping cloths would be nice. The waitress was friendly enough and we only had to wait 30 minutes for our food (breakfast of steak and eggs with pancakes, toast, and coffee). The steak had lots of marbling and was tough to cut. The pancakes arrived cold (sent to the microwave for a warm-up) and weren't very flavorful. The eggs were delicious. The coffee was weak and we had to ask for butter for the toast. All in all, a less than satisfactory experience as far as food quality and flavor is concerned. I will not be visiting this establishment again. read more

First question. Why has this place not been on Dinners, Drive ins and Dives. Ironic menu. Staff and cooks that are real characters and happy to see their customers. And a Americania vibe of the ideal dinner, booths and counter service, another flat top cranking out the classics. I have had the cheeseburger and fries, thin patty and fully dressed. Greasy and melty, you want this. O,yes you want this. My favorite though is the three egg omelet with provolone cheese and bacon. THE bacon. My my. The bacon. Frost cafe is close by my new place so I've been a couple times. Biggest drawback is that it's cash only, I never carry cash, they have an arm but it charges like $3 plus my bank does too so that's annoying. The staff is friendly and for me (a little bit of a germaphobe,lol) I like that they cook out in the open behind the counters. It's very clean! I've never had a wait there. I had breakfast the first time, Was average. The second time was stuffed peppers & mashed potatoes, not good, couldn't even force it down. So the following time I went back and stuck to breakfast again, was about the same as any other diner or ihop. Eggs and toast and such are pretty basic everywhere. The juice was strait sugar I had to water it down. The bar stools are terribly uncomfortable, go for the booth! The moral of my story would be to bring cash, stick w breakfast or burgers and fries. I just had the very worst service and breakfast that I can remember in a long time...I ordered steak and eggs, the menu specified choice of meat, I picked bacon the waitress came to me to take my order and inform me that that was a mistake on the menu, choice of meat. I said that's fine please substitute it for a couple of pancakes the steak and eggs meal was a $15 purchase. I ended up paying for a $20 meal after it was all done. Why because she billed me for the pancakes after telling me that the pancakes could not be substituted for the bacon. This was after I'd already ate my meal. BTW I got the bacon anyways even though I had asked to substitute it for pancakes that's how I know that it was soft. Then to top it all and this is not just to pile on. The steak was way under cooked. I only ate half of it. The bacon was soft I could still see gristle all over the ends of the bacon uncooked not crispy I haven't said this too often but I will never revisit that cafe! Feeling sick to my stomach read more

We have been for breakfast and had decent food. Today we went for lunch and what a different experience. The service was friendly and quick as we have had before. But the food was awful. My partner had a burger that was obviously a frozen mystery meat hockey puck that had no seasoning. I ordered the open face roast beef. The meat was shoe leather and unseasoned. It came with gelatinous pudding like gravy that tasted foul. The side of lima beans with it were from a can and bland. This was the cheapest, low grade "food" you could possibly put on a plate. It made Golden Coral look gourmet. I can't imagine that they can get away with serving such dreck. Won't be back. Two stars because service was good. read more

Shut the office doors and took our Admin folks out to lunch at Frost Cafe. Everyone was more than satisfied. We ran the table from soup to burgers to breakfast and everything was great. They are short staffed (like everyone) but our wait was not terrible (right at noon). Food was good. However, they are not taking covid precautions seriously. One waitress was wearing her mask as a chin guard which defeats the purpose. half the customers walking in did not have masks. And there were too many people congregating inside waiting for a table. Recommendations: all employees need to wear masks. Take down the sign on the front door about killing the messenger. We dine here fairly regularly for breakfast, so figured it was time for an update. Still have only visited for breakfast, but it continues to be our "go to" breakfast destination. Friendly home-style service & good decent home-style diner-type breakfast food. This morning's "Sausage & Gravy Over Biscuits" was a little on the bland side for me, but their underlying biscuits saved the day, & their home fries with onions (onions optional) were wonderful; husband's cheese omelet was perfect for him as usual. Past recent breakfasts of country ham & eggs, all of their other omelets, etc., etc., have continued to be above board - sometimes requiring "to go" boxes due to the large portions. Frost Café always serves as a terrific breakfast/brunch spot for us on the way down to Charlottesville for wine tasting weekends. I'm not sure how I originally found it, but I have been three times now and can say it's always a place I look forward to coming back to. Frost Café is reminiscent of old-time soda fountain luncheonettes with booths and a retro décor. The menu presents a typical and hearty offering of diner-type breakfast foods and I have always found the food to be very good. Their pancakes are among the best I've ever had (I think it's because they're not too sweet), so I always look forward to having those again. Their egg dishes are served with delicious home fries, and the portions are always large here. Service can be a bit slow at times, and while the waitresses are always prompt in refilling coffee, there have been times where we've waited a while for food on a busy Saturday morning. You can tell that Frost Café is really a special local place, and I think it's worth a stop if you're out for an inexpensive and delicious meal in the area. read more

I teetered on a 2 or 3 star rating. 2 stars for friendly smiley servers, clean establishment. I really can't do 3. The food had no flavor. I was so disappointed. Got the chip beef gravy on biscuits and scrambled eggs. I probably ended up putting a whole cup of salt and pepper on it to try to coax the flavor out. None. Gravy was bland and homemade biscuits were bland. Scrambled eggs...not sure how those got messed up. Bland. Kid's french toast had a caramelized burnt flavor. They ate a little. Portions were huge but but no taste. Next time in Culpeper we'll check in somewhere else. read more
