The worst company I have ever dealt with. Don't even deserve one star. I had my account set up on auto pay and sure enough payments weren't being taken out (and when they did get taken out it'd be charged 2-3x). My power was ultimately shut off while I was out of town and all of the "notices" they were mailing for "months" came at the same time. I thought I would try them out. Now that I have seen several of their reviews, I would say, "Buyer Beware". I started with them this month and so far, this has been a horrible experience. I opened my online account and noticed they have me down for 2 houses. I called them about it and they said they were sorry and will take the other house off. When I asked if i was going to be billed, they said there's a chance I would be. When I asked to speak with a supervisor they told me there's nothing they could do. Predatory company engaged in deceitful, unconscionable practices with their customers. We have been a customer for 3 years. The first year is great (as many of these other 1-star reviews say) and then they use the interim contract periods to either triple your rate or automatically renew you with the most expensive rate they have (one customer service rep referred to our most recent exorbitant rate as their "premium rate typically offered to commercial businesses" (we live in a 1000 square foot apartment). They lie about the renewal notices they send and if you renew online, they layout the renewal to appear as though you are signing up for the same plan as last year, when in fact you are renewing for a crazy commercial rate. It's predatory consumer practice and it's infuriating. read more

Used this company on a 12 month contract for about $150/month for about 2000 kWh/month which wasn't too bad. When the contract was ending, there was no letter or email sent to notify me. The 13th month went to their highest rate and my bill was over $325! I called customer service and they offered me $50 off that bill if I would sign another contract with them. I found a better rate with another company the following day. When using their service, I had tried to have their service started at other properties that I manage. Service was promised but not connected. I contacted customer service to find out what the problem was. Someone had decided that a deposit was needed on each account when I was previously told that it wouldn't be necessary. DON"T USE THIS COMPANY!!! read more

The billing is deliberately closer to the date due than other utilities. I missed my paper bill twice in nearly 2 years. On the most recent occasion, there was confusion, I could not get a straight answer about what was due on my account. There was an instant late charge, but before I knew I missed the bill, the next day they tacked on a $20 DNP notice fee. I immediately paid the bill, but they refused to refund the disconnect notice fee. This is a deliberate close-dating so that they can get $20 out of their customers before they can remedy the situation. 2 long conversations with their reps were countered with evasive answers, basically blaming me for a) irregular bill sending, and b) their "next morning hit" of $20. This has to be deliberate--lots more money in late fees than delivering electricity... Avoid this deception. read more

I have received 10+ telemarketing calls from Frontier Utilities today attempting to sell me service despite the fact that I am on the do not call list AND do not live in their area of service. I was a client of Frontier Utilities. For the first year under contract, they guaranteed that my bill would not exceed a $140 a month based on the rates in which they provided. However, after about 6 months into the contract my bills started to climb over $200. At the end of the contract, they made no attempts to contact me (except a letter in the mail that they acknowledged was returned to them) and my bills grew to over $700 per month. They still made no attempts to contact me by phone or e-mail to let me know that my contract was over and that the mail was sent back to them. Upon calling their customer service department to see if they would be willing to work with us in any regard in this matter - they said no and basically told us there was nothing they were willing to do. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS! They will manipulate and take advantage of the situation. We were not given any considerable customer service or a fair opportunity to renew at an acceptable rate. read more

UPDATE: 12/16/2022 THEY PULLED $800 from my bank account that I didn't not authorize and the last time I spoke with this company they said I was taken off auto pay. so they decided to STEAL the money instead. (Please read my review below about the situation they put me through with silently taking me off autopay and charging me late fees) I have been struggling financially since I was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago and trying to make it work during the holidays I canceled service with this company and they still decided to pull $800 that I did not authorize and the last time I spoke to a representative said I was taking off auto pay so they decided to steal it instead. We called the company and said they said WE WERE STILL ON AUTOPAY. How does that make sense when they told us we were off autopay three months ago? Btw everytime they receive a bad review they try to cover it up with fake "5 star reviews" with the similar descriptions, please don't use this company. (Review 3 weeks ago):We had a bill for $355 last month and the same for this month. We called and found out we had a month to month plan after our plan expired and we weren't aware. I spoke to the first representative and he said that he would reduce the price to remove the fees and work on giving us a new plan than the call disconnected. We called back and spoke to another representative who still said we had to pay the full $355 after we spoke to someone else about reducing it. Than we ask for a payment plan and he said we wouldn't be able to because the disconnection notice expired yesterday. Btw we received NO email/text/call about our plan expiring (he said it was because we didn't sign up for those notices) and our auto payments stopped working with them so we weren't aware of any late bills. He was surprised we still had electricity and after I told him we couldn't afford our bill this month he cut off our electricity immediately. Just don't do it. There are more honest companies out there that treat their loyal consumers better. It's all fine a first, shoot - I've been with them for years. Moved them with me to at last six different addresses. Then they decide to change the way they communicate to customers about contract renewal and you have to pay for it. I love the way their tagline says cheap rates with honest service. Choosing Frontier was the worst mistake I have made financially this year. I had selected the straight 12 plan as it had the lowest kwh price on a comparison website. Below is the problems I had with it. 1. It had a huge fee ($150) associated with not using enough power. 2. I tried using as much power as I could and still the bill was $150 being extremely wasteful. 3. Their is a $200 cancelation fee. 4. They do not allow you change plans even within their own company without the $200 cancelation fee. 5. When you call you always reach an indian person that barely speaks English. 6. If you do not sign a new contract immediately afterwards your rate goes up significantly despite not using very much electricity. P.S. It is December in Texas as I am writing this. read more

Absolute garbage people all around. My first 6 months or so was fine. When I got very sick in January and subsequently spent 95% of that and the following three months in the hospital, they failed multiple times to put my account on hardship, as I was not home and did not need electricity. Despite this, I paid my bills despite them becoming quite late as a result of their failures. When renewal time came up, I was given a single option to renew on the website (which is poorly constructed and rarely ever properly loads in multiple browsers), which I selected and was forced to proceed with despite half of the terms not even loading on their page. Fast forward to the next month, I receive a bill for THREE TIMES the amount I paid previously. When I called to ask about this, I was told the equivalent of 'Too bad, so sad'. When I asked to speak with a supervisor, which I attempted to do no less than four times, I was blown off, transferred to the wrong department twice, and hung up on once. I'm currently calling them for the sixth time today in an attempt to speak with a supervisor regarding these deceptive business practices. If you value integrity in a company, Frontier is not the one for you. They will lie, cheat, and steal from the sick, and then treat you like garbage when you get tired of it. read more

One star, and I'm being generous. Absolutely the most disgusting business practices I've ever experienced in my life. This company doesn't adhere to good business practices and will lie to customers. Customer Service Reps are clueless to simple account information like balances!! Hidden fees, with no logical explanation as to why they were applied. I made the mistake of having a credit card on their auto-pay expire. I immediately got an email saying I would be disconnected if I did not pay my bill. I did right away. In spite of that, two days later I got a pink disconnect notice in the mail saying I would be disconnected if I did not pay in about a week and one half. And if they disconnected me, I would be charged $30 and if they reconnected me, I would be charged another $30. But the combination of insult to injury was they were charging me $20 to mail me the notice that I would be disconnected if I did not pay the bill that I had already paid. Good grief! I think I'll switch to a more customer oriented electricity provider. read more

They were good at first, but after your contract they bump your rate up to the highest rate possible. The last couple of months my rate was 17.7 cents/kw! Almost doubled my contracted rate. I tried to call them and ask if there's something they can do to adjust the rate, (their highest rate online as of today is 11.9 cents. They said they don't do that. I ask the customer representative if I renew my contract what's the best rate they can give, still pretty high compared to the other energy company. I told her that I found a lower rate advertised by Frontier Utilities, can you give me that rate. Her response was, that's not found in their system, maybe it's only for new customers. We signed on with another company and still received early termination fee and bill of $75 for 1 week of service at house we weren't even at. So now we are on the hook for $275 for a plan we never signed up for and have been misguided and deceived. We complained to company several times and send to Public Utility Commission and even appealed their decision and they sided with Frontier. They deceive consumers and profit off of it. If I could've give them NEGATIVE 100 stars I definitely would.. first thing first they accept my 175 down payment after they accepted it they had the wrong address on file, so I called them and a 20 minute conversation they let me know that they do not cover my building so I requested a refund. Mind you my scheduled day to turn on my utilities would be on 29th I canceled on them on the 22nd after they told me that they can't cover. So they said my refund will be sent back. 3-5 days after, I get a call stating that it was on for one day and they are gonna deduct 2.99 out of my 175. I have watched them take advantage of many families in my neighborhood who have recently come from other countries. They often prey on the mothers of the family, who are home during the typical workday, taking care of children, and who do not yet understand enough about this culture to see through the lies the salespeople are telling them to get them to sign the papers that will hook them for high energy bills in a few months. read more

Frontier Utilities touts themselves as having low energy plans with easy payment options. The first time I tried to pay my bill, I was told I could not pay with an e-check and I was required to use a credit card. Huh? The option to pay with e-check is on their website! So I paid with a credit card because I was told that my utilities would get cut off if I didn't pay on the due date. I then tried to set up my e-check in time for the next billing cycle, and the exact same thing happened. I am not able to use an e-check even though it is listed as a payment option. I emailed care@frontierutilities.com, which is their support staff, explained the issue in detail, and I've never received a follow up email. Customer service is a joke. They say they will "escalate" the issue but you will never hear back from them. Furthermore, the people answering phones are not even based in the US. I'm so frustrated that I've filed a complaint with the PUC, and hopefully that might wake them up. Very disappointed, and in times of high energy costs, the least that can be done is to have decent customer service. Frontier Utilities is a terrible company to do business with. read more

We have been with this company about six months. We were paying around $70 a month which is our budget and then boom $256 triple the amount on December 2017 bill, We did not change any of our electric usage behavior. I say this is unusual. I went the following address 5161 San Felipe st #320, to talk with someone in person, turned out it's not their actual location, and it's A Fed-ex mailbox Address. I call the customer service and waited 15 minutes before I can talk to someone and then I explain the situation to the lady who picked up the phone but not interested to help me all, she just read a script. Frustrated with this bad customer service I politely ask if she could transfer me to a supervisor and I was on hold for 45 minutes before I talk to Dave. I explain again to him the situation but he says you used more kilowatt and there is nothing I can do for you. If you want the meter checked, you will have pay for someone to come and check it. And he also says they are not the Actual power provider, they are THIRD PARTY COMPANY and give me the phone number of the actual power supplier company to call regarding about the meter reading. I did call on the number he provide. They say they don't provide power to Houston at All. Seems to be very confusing and frustrating, I guess I need to file a complaint with Texas Public Utility Commission at This point. It's sad they want your business But don't provide the service. read more

I filed a complaint with the Houston BBB. The Frontier customer service rep who responded to this complaint, conveniently left out a letter I had received from Frontier, which proved my case  The attached letter states that my contract will expire on April 1  My rate under the contract is 0.049903  This is the rate I was charged on my January bill, which is correct.  The above letter was sent out on February 2, 2021 stating  I have until April 1 under this contract, to continue at that rate.  However Frontier changed the rate to  0.120847 plus a customer service charge.  The new rate is nearly three times the contracted rate.   If Frontier refuses to honor the contracted rate, I will also be contacting the Pennsylvania Public Utility commission, and the PA State Attorneys General office.   Frontier has shown itself to be a shady, and underhanded company, who refuses to honor a contract with a customer They have over charged me by $60+ this month. Short version: I don't recommend them at all and will add them to my list of dysfunctional companies who hire morons for front line service reps. The worst customer service experience I have ever had, plus they bumped my kWh rate without telling me from 6.3cents to 12.5cents kWh. The details: Here's what happened. I got a letter from Frontier printed on reddish paper stating they will be disconnecting my service because they could not process the payment to the credit card posted on the account. Further they slapped on a late payment fee of 5% (about $12). I called to find out what happened and the customer service was not fluent in English - I had a hard time understanding what he was saying, but here is what I was able to discern: The rep insisted that the problem had to be on my credit card because I may have over charged it or the credit card company canceled my credit card. I had already called my credit card company and they told me that they did not receive a request from Frontier for payment and if they had, there would be no problem approving it just like they have been for the past 3 years! I relayed that information to the Frontier rep and told him that the problem is most probably on their end and that it was inappropriate for Frontier to assess a late payment penalty. He said that he can't find out what happened because he is just a customer service rep and is not connected to the finance department, he also said that he cannot waive the late payment because they had already waived a late payment penalty in the past 12 months when my credit card was stolen and had to be replaced. Further he said that the finance department has removed my credit card from their systems and he could not find a credit card number to use to process the payment! He then said that if I really wanted to find out what happened I had to call them again tomorrow because the people who can investigate had already left for the day! I then told him that I am done with Frontier and that I am switching to another electric company since he could not waive the late payment fee since he was interpreting their rules like an automaton and could not tell me what went wrong with their systems. He said that he will need to transfer me to someone else who in another department because I said I was going to ditch them. Note at this time I still had not had my issue resolved regarding payment and waiving the penalty. I waited for 20 minutes on the phone and a lady answers asking if she could help me. I asked her if she knew why I was transferred to her and she said no. Apparently the person just transferred me to her w/o giving her any background information. So... here we go gain .... She proceeded to ask me for my name and account number - all along I was wondering why the previous customer service rep did not prep her and relay to her the information connected to the call transfer!!! At any rate, I had to relay the whole story to her as I listened to her typing frantically as I spoke. I can only assume that she most probably was a "senior" customer service rep to whom lower ranking service reps punted. When I was done relaying the details of what had transpired with the previous customer service rep, she said that if I gave her a credit card number she would process the payment and drop the late payment fee penalty and re-activate automatic payment using that credit card. I also asked her to provide feedback to their Finance department that they cannot just delete a customer's credit card at the first instance of a problem. She regurgitated what the other service rep said : "Sorry we're a different department..." At the end of the call I asked her if my kWh rate was still 6.3cents she said no and that my service had been automatically transitioned to a month-to-month service at the rate of 12.4cents per kWh. Say what! I then told her that as result of all the above they just lost a long time customer because they don't have their act together. Dysfunctional is all I can say. Long story short - I absolutely do not recommend this electric company at all. read more

This company has always been really good for me, they have an easy website and their customer service is really good at setting things up for you or answering any questions. Are used to have them at my old apartment but when I moved I switched to another company now I'm back with them because their prices are way better. Only giving 1 star bc I cant give less. Yes there prices are cheap but there customer service is horrible. Our bill went from 169 to around 249 in 4 days bc we cancelled our service. We were not under contract they just said it's what the bill came to. In those 4 day we were only there half of one of those days bc we moved and they supposedly could not kill power for 4days. My husband called and was promised a call back from a supervisor 2 weeks later never received a call back so he called and was hung up on bc they didnt want to deal with him. They told him he had to wait on a supervisor to call him back. He has now been on the phone for over an hr and not getting anywhere. We saw the reviews about them being bad after your first year with them and those reviews are true. BE WARE!!!!! read more

n March I signed up for sign up for the Straight Power 12 plan via the Frontier Utilities web interface. This plan is totally inappropriate for someone like me who uses about 500 KWH per month. The advertising for this plan was misleading in the total price it would cost me. Now the Straight Power 12 plan doesn't even appear to be offered any more from their website. And the way I originally found your service was via ChooseTexasPower.org. And now NONE of the Frontier Utilities are listed there anymore. I have also seen other complaints on BBB and other sites about the same issue. When I got my first (partial) bill in March I responded right away to the email address they provided with a pledge of answering the email within 24 hours. To this day (May 1 2018) they still have not responded to my initial questions and concerns. When the first full bill came, I also responded with email. After not hearing back I phoned in and they did admit they receive my emails. I have since changed plans to a different provider. On April 24'th I replied to their email with a request to waive my cancellation fee and only charge me for the electricity I used (no "base rate" which would more correctly be called a Minimum Monthly Charge), due to issues with the sign up process and communication issues. Not a good experience with them. Have reported them to BBB and PUCT. read more

Giving this company 1 star is being very generous. But for the sake of this review 1 star it is. Currently I am on hold with one of the supervisors who is getting her supervisor after being hung up on twice! On 10/23/2017, I went to the power to choose website for electricity for my new apartment and found that they have the lowest rate around...with a catch. If you use less than 500kwh your bill is automatically $125.00. Per the terms and conditions, it states that you have 3 days to cancel the service before being charged a termination fee.(this is standard practice with all electric companies in Texas) I use way less than that because I have energy efficient appliances. I called the next day on 10/24 since they were closed after 6pm the prior night. The rep said that they could not cancel the service order because it was too late. It does not say anywhere in the terms and conditions that one has to have service in order to cancel!!! What kind of practice is this!??? I then tell the rep that I am going to switch to a new provided and that should cancel the service and the rep tells me if that is what I want to do then go ahead. I also made sure that the rep knew they could not charge me a cancellation fee due to what was stated in the terms and condition. The rep stated he understood. As soon as I got off the phone, I switched to reliant, who I had previously before and was able to get service the next day. Well two weeks later, I received a bill for $18.97 for service that I never had. Now I am on the phone with the 4th representative after being hung up on by a supervisor who was suppose to transfer me to her manager. This representative proceeds to tell me that the matter has been taken care off. I mean a courtesy call would have been nice and then I wouldn't have had to go thru all of this. read more

We bought a rental property that needed a temporary electrical hook up while we renovated. We only renovate on the weekends but noticed we kept getting charged for electricity over the week so we concluded there might be something left on without our being aware of it as it's an old house, etc. Anyway, we shut the breakers off to fix that issue. Fast forward three days and we get charged $59 for those days. Makes no sense! Breakers weren't even on. We call and a rep tells us that there's no way for them to "prove" we shut the breakers off, that next time we should take a picture of the breakers off with a time stamp. As if we couldn't just flip on the breakers once the photo was taken?! And what is a time stamp photo going to accomplish? We KNEW the breakers were off therefore we were getting shammed. We had a no penalty contract to cancel and cancelled immediately. What a joke this company is. read more
