Friday October 17, 2025 at around 1 pm (at the State Fair of Texas) I was at the Body Armour promotional tent, and Reliant representative, Jacob, was located next to it ( standing infront of the Reliant tent) as I was leaving. He wanted to speak with me. However, I told him I was not interested because a young woman at another Reliant tent at the fair last year lied and said she would give me tickets if I simply spoke to her about my service and did not follow through at the end. She essentially did a bait and switch. He acted surprised and said, "She did that?" I said yes. He then claimed he would not do that to me and that if I simply spoke to him about my service he would ACTUALLY give me 25 tickets and held them up for me to see. Furthermore, he deceitfully guaranteed me the tickets regardless of me signing up or not because he claimed he was the "manager" and therefore had the authority to do so. WELL HE BOLDY LIED!!! He wasted 15 or more minutes of my time asking me about my provider, having me search my email for my last electric statement, grabbing my phone to look at the statement, doing calculations to show me how he could save me $2 a month (which based on his track record was probably a bold-face lie too) and then wanted to sign me up immediately. I told him I was not interested at the moment and needed time to research the company and analyze reviews, etc before deciding. He replied, "Reliant is the biggest and best company." I then decided to pull up Google reviews of Reliant while I sat there and found a customer review from someone who visited the Reliant booth at the Fair claiming he was deceived as well. I read it out loud to Jacob. He then made up a lie that it was a different 3rd party Reliant tent, like he could actually confirm when the person who wrote the review never mentioned the name of the representative. Upon hearing my anger, due to his bait and switch, Bashir, the ACTUAL manager, came to inquire what the issue was. Bashir was essentially indifferent and didn't seem like he had managerial experience to address issues. To make a very long story short, Reliant Energy should address your marketing representatives, overall, including those that appear at events, and based on reviews of other locations, especially in the Dallas area, ensure they are being honest because deception seems to be a commonality within your organization. I received a written response from DaKandria stating someone from Sales Quality Assurance would follow up to discuss the issue. Never received a call. I also called DaKandria at her number provided around 3:30 pm yesterday; it went straight to voicemail. Left a voicemail with my contact and the case number and I received no response. I called this morning and I received no response as well, only rang. Furthermore, per the information you provided in your reply below, I contacted the chat line and spoke to Account Supervisor, Daphne, who was of no help. I explained in detail why I was contacting Reliant and explained I wasn't a customer, but she didn't even read the details of my initial message and asked me questions i already answered. I asked for the Quality Assurance department's contact number or a supervisor that knows how to address the situation, and she claimed she couldn't help me. Definitely confirmed for me how poor the Reliant Customer Service is and why I will never utilize the organization. How are you a supervisor but don't know or have access to numbers for other departments. And why are you asking me questions I already answered at the beginning because clearly you didn't read my initial response. I'm extremely disgusted with Reliant Energy and Center Point. The rate increases after the freeze has been astronomical. A few months ago Reliant updated their portal and you are no longer permitted to change your rate plan. **** do not fall for the Free nights and weekends **** the past 90 days my bill has increased. I carefully monitor the usage to stay within the timeframes to no avail. According to a rep I am given a one cent discount for nights and weekends. What can I do with a penny discount???? This includes the center point increase from $16 to $36 a month. This the most asinine offer. This really underscores the low ratings online. Why does the state of Texas only side with a business or employer?? The only rights we have are to pay taxes. It's exhausting living in this state. I finally understand why people are quick tempered and wore out mentally. Huge Ripoff! Hidden charges + ETF to change plans. Stay Away from Reliant! They're horrible. I was with Pulse Power previously and was force pushed to Reliant. I was told that everything on my bill stays as is and nothing changes until the contract ends. But I see some new charge "Gross Receipts Tax Reimbursement" charge from Reliant that was never charged by Pulse Power. Reliant mentioned that they always have that charge and will not be waived. I requested cancellation of my contract with Reliant and I wouldn't want to continue with Reliant, but they mentioned that I need to pay about $400 in early termination fees. I was helpless and I couldn't do much, so stayed with them. I noticed drastic usage changes after moving to reliant and noticed that my bills started going crazy higher; so I contacted Reliant requesting to switch my plan to Free Nights plan; but they mentioned that I will have to pay the ETF $300 to switch to that plan; so weird why I would pay ETF when I am planning to move to a different plan with the same provider. After all this, I thought it does not makes sense to even be with Reliant especially with such horrible customer service and tried have a conversation for the final time with an agent to see if they can waive my ETF or at least give me a reduction in the ETF and they said no. So, I moved to a different provider and was ready to pay an ETF. I was then called back by an agent from Reliant asking for feedback and I provided them the feedback about their reps asked me to pay ETF to change to a different plan with the same provider. That rep said that she is sorry to hear that and mentioned that it would not have happened that way, if I would have spoken to a supervisor and asked if i can switch back and stay with them and they can waive the ETF to move to the plan that I requested. I informed her that I didn't want to come back especially due to the horrible customer service, additional charges, miscommunication, etc from Reliant. But, I mentioned that I can give them a try in future, provided they take care of my ETF (waive completely or partial). She mentioned that she will discuss with a supervisor about my experience and will have then call back and help with my ETF (partially if not full). I haven't heard back from them again and I called customer service asking if they have any update on this and the response was, there is no way to waive or reduce ETF once you moved out to a different provider. I asked them what is the use for the feedback and the rep mentioned that she is not at all happy with the way this was taken care and promised me to talk to the supervisor and said will take care of the ETF (partial if not full). And this agent says, it is just a feedback call. So, what does feedback mean? It is just to waste customer's time? All I can say is; Reliant is a ripoff, will avoid them for life and will let my friends and family know about my experience with them and will ensure that everyone that I know of stays away from them. They are so over priced. I am not someone who knows too much about electricity but I moved into a townhouse and was very very cautious with how much I used my energy and my bill was $300 a month, absolutely ridiculous. I have friends with much bigger houses paying $120. They also would not tell me what was causing my bill to be so high. Overall having reliant has annoyed me. I will be switching immediately as I was mislead by a sales person at Walmart. I was in too much a hurry and I am now paying 60-80$ more than I was. Crooks! Just signed up 3 weeks ago-needed to switch service to new address because I am moving. Said had to run my credit and will be an $80 deposit. I wasn't charged a deposit when I started 3 weeks ago. I have great credit and they said it's because of credit. I asked what my score was and he couldn't say. I asked what in my credit is requiring a deposit. He then changed and said the address moving to requires a deposit. I asked if they pay the apartments and he said no. The 25th will be 30 days. I cancelled within 30 days so no charge. He said the only dates that it can be turned off is today or the 26th ( 1 day after the 30 days) haha. Comical I tell ya ! read more

I was sent a renewal letter for the Astros Plan. I was on a yearly contract that got me a $100. gift card and an autograph session at the end of the season. I received a letter stating that if I wanted to keep those benefits, I needed to renew my contract to the Astros 36 Plan. NO WHERE IN THE LETTER DID IT STATE THIS WAS A ONE TIME BENEFIT!! Now customer service is stating that the contract says its a one time benefit. When I asked if I could send a copy of the letter in to show that it does NOT state anywhere its a one time benefit, there was no interest in that at all! When I told them it was a bait and switch, and said I would cancel, she was way too happy to waive the cancelation fee and let me cancel!! This company is trash. I had a flex plan as I did not want a contract. it's just my son and I and we are barely home as I work and he is in school. Less than 1200 sqy ft and I average 630 kw per month and paying $170. I cancel services on my flex plan and for 15 days of service I get slapped with a $119 bill plus $109 fee for a so called bill plan. They say there is no fee to cancel on a flex plan and it's a lie. Oh my. Really, Reliant? Talk about feeling disillusioned. We've been with this company for nearly 40 years -- first it was H L & P, then Reliant bought them out. We moved to a new home in 1988, and since this was prior deregulation, Reliant eventually became our electricity provider. BUT. Several months ago, I switched all of our billing from paper to email. Reliant was the ONLY one that I had issues with. Seems that whatever SSN they have associated with our account is not one of OUR SSNs, and due to this I couldn't create an account online with them. I ended up calling and getting them to agree to email our bill, but WOW, that stuck in my craw that they told me we couldn't set up an account without the "correct" SSN. Say, what? So, now around the holidays, the email for billing is behind schedule. Me, being the conscientious 20th-century chick that I am, call them to find out what's up. And, what's with the mismatched SSN? And, BTW, what is my rate per kWh, since I can't log in and see it. This is where it gets interesting. Yeah, they can correct the SSN on the account, but ONLY if we send them a copy of my husband's SS card. HUH? Do you require that when someone sets up new service? Declined. Then I asked if they could offer me a better rate. Never signed a contract when deregulation kicked in, so we've been on a "monthly flex plan" for years (yeah, I know, bad financial choice). The best rate they could give me was 2 cents lower than what I was already paying - even though I told them that I was looking at powertochoose.org and WOW, those rates were a whole lot less. Sorry, is what I was told. So, I called another provider and got a fabulous rate on a 2-year contract. You lose a customer that has a proven payment history of over 30 years because you won't match what you give to a "new customer"? Oh my. Oh my. Spoke with a customer service supervisor about a bill I received for installation of a new meter. I was told that the representative was wrong when they told me about the amount I would be charged for installation of the new meter. So now I have to pay a $215 bill for their error. But all is okay, as the supervisor will speak with the employee about this. And they get their $215 from me. Customers have to pay for their mistakes. read more

I have been in Texas for about 1.5 years now and for the first time ever had to pick an electricity company so that whole process was all brand new to me. I spoke with maybe 2 or 3 companies including Reliant Energy and due to excellent customer service representative decided to roll the dice with them. Thus far, I have had no issues whatsoever. They have made everything so easy from paying my bill to keep me informed on current charges. The way they communicate with me via email and text messages is future forward, helpful, and informative. From a price/cost perspective since I have nothing to compare too, in terms of other energy providers in Texas, I feel they fair. I liked the no contract plan option and again up till now have had no reason to feel the need to switch plans or providers. read more

This is the biggest rip-off of a company I have ever seen. I moved here from another state, and didn't understand how deregulated energy worked, what it was, or even the fact that it existed in Texas. I had no idea that I could shop around. So I signed up for Reliant, thinking that it was the designated provider for this area. The first Red Flag was the fact that it took me 3 phone calls, each about an hour long, to even get signed up. The whole process was confusing, and every time I hung up angrier than the previous time. I was paying 17 cents per kwh. As I said, I never before had to understand what that meant, because I had never had options before. Then I signed up for plan that was advertised as a way to have more predictable bills through an Average Billing plan. I had what I thought was a similar plan where I lived before, and basically what it meant was that it took the average of the last 12 months of usage, and gave you a rate that didn't change each month. So I signed up for that, only to find out that, in fact, my bill was still fluctuating. It was NOT predictable. AT ALL. When I called to ask, I was told that I would have been paying more if I hadn't' signed up for it. (As if I should be happy with this, despite the fact that they very badly misrepresented when I signed up.) Did I mention that I was paying 17 per kwh? So I changed companies at the end of my 12 month contract. The amount I was charged for my last 2.5 weeks of electricity was about what I'd been paying for a full month. Fine, it HAS been really hot out. BUT in addition to that, I was charged about a $550 fee for DEFERRED BILLING. So basically, I still had to pay the difference of those months where I was supposedly paying an average. Did I mention I was paying 17 per kwh? If you like paying at least 6 cents per kwh more than everyone else, and signing up for plans that are very badly misrepresented, then by all means, sign up for Reliant. If you would like someone to get to know about your usage and help match you with the best electric plan for your needs, then look up TexasElectricRates.com. (They're not paying me to post that website. I posted that of my own volition, because I was HAPPY with what I got.) They had excellent customer service - I didn't get passed around to ten different people. The same person I talked to when I called got me set up. I'm so disappointed....I signed up in September 2020 with free nights. My bill is always between $70 and $80 which is higher than what I use. I was just told by reliant I pay more during the day because I have free nights. I didn't know it was a 12 month contract. I can't change my plan until I'm in 9 months and they'll charge me $150 to cancel my services which I was not explained in September. I should have stayed with Ambit. So...Reliant Energy INSISTED on a poor review from me despite me giving them several chances to right a wrong in the name of customer service Long story short, I forgot to call in and cancel a small electric service account for a 4 unit property I owned in Houston. I sold this property in July 2013 and JUST YESTERDAY I realized I was being billed on my personal checking account all this time. I totaled it up and it came to $1,509.00 I gave RELIANT for light service on a property I didn't own for 6 YEARS! They had been sending me a paper bill to ANOTHER property I also sold in 2013 and it was being RETURNED to SENDER which SHOULD HAVE BEEN a tip off that there was something wrong. 6 years ago, I don't remember if I called and tried to cancel service. Utility companies DO NOT MAKE it EASY to cancel service (ATT, COMCAST too) they all ask you a million questions answer security questions etc, make you press a million buttons to get a LIVE person on the phone) It is a war of attrition. ANYWAY, the official line is because no one called in to cancel, it is a valid charge. So RELIANT thinks it is ok to take someone's money and NOT provide something in return for it. What if I tried to do that? You think I would get in trouble? You are damn right I would. They think they are going to CLOSE the case and I am going to eat sh** and crawl away but I am not. I am in the real estate business so I will make it known to everyone I deal with how INFLEXIBLE and CRIMINAL RELIANT is to their customers. I am even mulling dragging RELIANT into SMALL CLAIMS court. Please be aware if you have Reliant Energy and you attempted to transfer your service to a new location, they may have created a new account for you resulting in you losing your contracted rate, being forced into a new month to month contract for a much higher kilowatt per hour usage rate, all with no communication and no permission. If you can't find your electric bill in your original account, it is because they created a new account which you may not have been expecting. So stay sharp to ensure you stay safe in this heat and the company isn't taking advantage of you. After being a loyal customer for three years to be treated like this and lose all the grandfathered perks gained from my loyalty is not only costly but disappointing to say the least. I must say my experience with Reliant has been disappointing at best and as soon as my contract is up in September I will be moving on to another company. The saga begins two years ago. I was moving into a new apartment and Reliant had a deal I really thought was awesome. Reliant screwed things up so bad I didn't have service on move in day. The complex was cool and let me use their power until Reliant got it together. Now there's a credit on my account and nobody there can tell me why it's not posting to my account. The result has been late fees because each month I call and someone in one of their off-shore call centers assures me it will post "for sure" this month and it never does. We had an order to shut off service at one location and transferred service to a new place. The shut-off happened a full day earlier than what was requested. Called customer service only for the reps to verify the mistake on their end and then they turn around to ask us to put a deposit down and sign up for a temporary plan to restore service that THEY turned off by mistake!!! We ended up having to reschedule our move, I work from home and had to miss work. Before 11 am the apt was already 80 degrees!!! We had to make new arrangements with the move that we had already planned out and ended up spending more to accommodate their mistake! All we got was a sorry. Horrible Customer Service!! Beware of Reliant's tricks and misdeads. Yesterday I did my annual search for power rates at http://www.powertochoo... Everyone in Texas should do this at least annually or you will be ripped off by your current electric provider. On the site, Reliant has the best fixed rate plan, but they would NOT let me pick my switch over date when I signed up. I had to call them, hold, explain that they didn't need to charge me $5.95 for talking to a human. Hold again, they had to search for the rate they advertised, hold again, etc. 45 minutes later, Reliant said they had cancelled my switch request and said I should call back next month. I also did the live chat for about 30 minutes. 2 hours later, my current provider notified me that I will be penalized because Reliant told ERCOT that I was switching in June. On a date that Reliant picked out of the blue and refused to tell me. Bottom line: Beware!! Reliant quotes a good rate for their on-line only plan, but their on-line people have no ability to help and the humans want $5.95 to talk to them. WORST COMPANY EVER! The rates are extremely high. I just moved to TX and did not understand all these different energy companies here and how rates are provided. We use one utility company in CA. No hidden fees/cost just straight to the point. I moved here in June my first bill was over $700 and this month bill is over $1000.00 which I knew from the first bill to use less energy.
