So, I found Frontier during one of my many restaurant searches before arriving in Albuquerque. It seems the hubby also found it and is a fan and I can understand why. He had the breakfast burrito with sausage - which was enormous and looked great. It must be good because that is his order each visit - he found something he likes and is sticking to it. I had the Mexican Combo - chicken taco, cheese enchilada, rice and beans. The only problem with living in Albuquerque is that everything comes with chile and I am not big on spice so when I say no chile or salsa, I get strange looks. Anyway, the cheese enchilada was good - the perfect amount of cheese and sauce. The beans had a little kick but totally tolerable and yummy. The taco was fantastic - hard shell, tender white meat chicken, lettuce, and cheese. The Frontier is large and across the street from UNM so there are tables of student study groups. Unfortunately, the table next to us was trying to understand Statistics while the toddler was trying to see how loud she could be. What more can I say? Good food, easy ordering, plenty of seats, relaxed atmosphere, reasonable prices. Absolutely, a place to go for a good meal. read more

This place is amazing, and an absolute staple in not just Albuquerque, but New Mexico in general. I feel like the population would be more likely to rise up in mass protest if the Frontier closed than if there was 90% unemployment. The service is quick and easy, and the atmosphere is just so awesome. Some might complain that it's dirty. One, it's not really dirty, and two, the building itself is just old. The food, in my opinion, is some of the best New Mexican food you can find. I think the green chile stew is to die for, the carne adovada is the best I've ever tried because it's shredded and not cut into blocks like other restaurants do (not to mention the red chile is bomb as well) and they make a hell-of-a huevos rancheros. It's always dependable. Not to mention, sometimes it is fun to just go to Frontier to people watch and see the eclectic crowd. Be it the students, high schoolers with nothing else to do, or the well-dressed seniors that always seem to come in right after church on Sundays and everyone else in between. Strolled through here last night for dinner. Wasn't sure what to expect but it's an order at the counter kind of place. They then notify you your food is ready by flashing your order number on numeric boards. The service was pretty quick. The food was very average tasting though. The burger I had tasted like a whopper from BK. The fries were average. They have the new - super high tech coke dispensers. That's kind of fun. The other good thing about the experience was the fact that my good sized meal was only $8. If you haven't been here it's worth checking out, I wouldn't run back though. read more

What an institution! You must come here even if you're like me and just passing through Albuquerque. The must have dish is the green chile stew. Off the chain!!! So flavorful and a bit spicy. I recommend the medium size Served with the fluffier tortilla you've ever seen - it's like a cross between Indian bread and a Mexican tortilla. I love, love, love this stew but also get a carne adovada taco or burrito. I personally don't like the taste but it's unique to New Mexico and you may love the spices on the meat. Here during balloon fiesta and maybe thats why its super packed..having to sit outside due to no seating. Hubby is still inside waiting for our tray of food is a crowded anxiety building atmosphere. Hope he doesnt punch anyone out. Overrated so far..you order your food then wait for it and carry it to your table..not how i wanted to spend my breakfast. Just finished eating..got burrito with green chili stew..good..not outstanding. Hubby got western omelet no meat...hes had better, daughter got #1 basic breakfast. Cinnamon roll is big and super sweet drowned in butter..didnt finish. Loved this place so much on my Albuquerque trip that I ate their twice! Tried the green chile, burger, enchilada, soup, and, of course, the infamous cinnamon roll. All good! So maybe there is better of each thing to be had elsewhere, but I enjoyed the divey throwback ambiance, cafeteria-style ordering, and quality of food across the board. It's cheap too! Classic, timeless, a little skeevy, dependable, and convenient. Frontier has been there forever, and it doesn't seem like it's going to go anywhere else anytime soon. If you're at the University and decide that you need a quick bite to eat, you can stop here and get just about anything, including fresh-squeezed orange juice and freshly-baked tortillas. It's no longer the nightowl's hangout, as they now close overnight, but for the first fifty years the place was open 25 hours a day (or was that Goody's?). I make it a habit to stop at the Frontier every time I'm in Albuquerque, which is usually only once or twice every few years, but lately has been more frequent. But it's still there, and the food is still awesome, and cheap. It's open all the time, the New Mexican food is delicious, but for me, it's all about the breakfast. As spicy as it gets! We went here for breakfast and have read all the good reviews so we decided to check it out. It's like a grocery store, the green light will tell you if it's your turn next in line. pretty efficient and fast. the place is huge, probably can sit close to 200 people and being right in front of University of New Mexico and being open late, this place just rocks. We got the Carne Adovada Burrito and the Green chile cheeseburger. They're both very good. It's not just spicy, it has that wonderful chile flavor that blends well with the burger. The burger is of decent size, not that big, not that small, it will fill you up. we also got the western style hash brown, which is pretty spicy but very flavorful. i only wish the hash browns were a little bit crispier but nothing beats fresh potatoes as a side for breakfast. our other friends got the steak, which is probably not their forte. i'm giving them 5 stars because of their efficient service, ten counters, fast food, more than average food, and their accessibility. it's right around the corner of UNM. A definite must try in Albuquerque, this one is not to be missed. read more

I was a little disappointed with the bacon breakfast burrito I received. It had no taste to it. I even ordered it with green chili and still it was bland. I must say, the place is huge, clean, the staff is friendly and they get you in and out in a hurry though. I'll probably be back the next time I'm in New Mexico...it's nice here. read more

Cheap, with low quality ingredients, and for college kids, seems to be open late and is the main reason for the attraction. They are able to handle a massive amount of orders. It was Sunday night and this was one of the few restaurants still open. After a positive experience with Los Cuates, we decided to try more New Mexican food. The restaurant is more like a diner; there's no wait service. The food was cheap so we were a little skeptical, but my carne adovado burritos were delicious. BF ordered the Frontier buritto and nearly licked the plate clean. They make their own tortillas (you can watch them do it) and they're so soft and tasty. And they have those cool touch screen soda machines. It was conveniently right across the street from UNM. There was plenty of parking in their little parking lot and in the surrounding neighborhood. In my last 24 hours in Albuquerque I discovered this amazing restaurant. My friend and I had dinner there on Friday night (Had an awesome vegetarian chile dish), I then couldn't resist to go back for breakfast the next morning. It was a delicious breakfast burrito. I did try the Golden Pride version (slightly smaller burrito), and both are simply the best breakfast burritos I've ever had! This place is enormous and even though it is always busy, you shouldn't have much trouble finding a seat in several dining rooms. The service is quick, the food is fresh and delicious, there is a nice "diner feel", and in general this place has character. I don't know, I think your ABQ experience is not complete without having a meal here! read more

Came to Frontier Restaurant fresh off of a flight from California. As, I believe anyway, some of the best Mexican food in the world is right here in So Cal, I was naturally a little hesitant before eating here. I have high expectations for Mexican food. Maybe my expectations were too high. Frontier Burrito. (2/5) It was alright; it didn't blow me away, yet it was tasty enough that I ate the whole thing. The thing that kind of threw me off is the meat tasted like ground, seasoned meat, like you'd find at Taco Bell. I expected something like actual chunks of steak or beef from the single highest rated place in Albuquerque. I added a good amount of complimentary green chili from the chili pots, which was EXCELLENT. Average-ish burrito, but outstanding chili toppings. I kind of wish I got a breakfast burrito or something else. Cinnamon bun (5/5). Ridiculously good. Easily one of the best cinnamon buns I've had. Service / speed / everything else - 4/5. Staff was friendly, and food was served quickly. No complaints. Would I come back? Yeah. However, compared to some local Cali-mex places, the burrito just didn't stand up. read more

This place is classic ABQ. I have seen footage of Central shot during the 60s and the Frontier looks exactly the same as it does now. The food quality kind of goes all over sometimes. Their homemade tortillas are so sweet tasting, it's like they use buttermilk to make them. A few favorites are: Green Chilli Cheese Burger, freshly squeezed OJ (AMAZING!), Green Chilli Bacon Breakfast Burrito with cheese and chilli inside and on top, the Green Chilli Stew, Huevos Rancheros, and I could go on. I often eat here before work because they open before the sun rises. Extremely fast and friendly service here. You order at the window and wait for your number to be called. They have a large variety of New Mexican food here from enchiladas to green chilie cheese burgers. They're frontier cinnamon rolls are To-Die-For, seriously sometimes I dream about them. Clean restrooms as well, the homeless like to hang out outside but rest assured management keeps them out of the building so that you can enjoy your meal. Another icon and institution in the great "burque. Again a LOT of memories here. Study sessions, hangingout, talking to friends, and talking to the friendly people there. You never know who you will happen to run into the biggest small town called ABQ. Especially here. I wouldn't say it is the greatest New Mexican food in ABQ, but pretty dang good and the greatest at 3AM. I love to meet up with friends there when I go back home. Parking is a bit of a hassle, but can be overcome. Another place where it is difficult to park there and hang out for a long time during the busy hours. However, late at night it is a chill place, but still plenty of people passing through. read more

YUM!! I love this place! Their breakfast burritos are super good, as well as the cinnamon rolls. When I go, I have to get both. Plus, it's super cheap. Frontier is always open, which is a big plus at two in the morning. Having never heard of this restaurant until I arrived in ABQ, I thought this place was a crummy dive by looking at it from the outside. Even the ordering process was interesting...you wait for a green light, then go to the appropriate counter to order. I ordered the Frontier Burrito and all I can say is WoW! It did need some sour cream to really make it taste great, but the combination of the green chili's and other ingredients really combined to give a unique taste. The food didn't stand out for the effort to keep my anxiety level at bay. There are a lot of "personalities" that came into or loitered outside the restaurant.
