First time here - visiting from Florida. It is where family wanted to go for dinner on Father's Day. They are locals & so we went. Sasha was our server. She was extremely busy taking care of (many) customers & still was very attentive to our table (3 adults, 2 kids), making sure our chips & beverages were refilled, our food came out fast & we were satisfied customers. Stopped here on our way home from camping. Starving and ready for some hot food. We got there just as they opened so the restaurant was pretty empty. Loved the decor- we sat against the comfy pillows and my boys brought in a book and cuddled up to read! All the artwork of Frida Kahlo is very interesting to look at. The food was good, some great. The homemade chips were amazing! I didn't want to eat the whole basket but whoops!! My fish tacos were goo, but a little bland. The interior is wonderfully done and different than most Mexican restaurants. My waiter was prompt and attentive. My order was quickly taken and some delicious handmade chips where delivered with a cup of salsa and a small serving spoon and a small plate which I thought was a nice perk. I asked if they had a hotter salsa and I was delivered a great assortment of 3 different choices again in unique bottles I have never seen at other restaurants. They were a perfect selection. I ordered steak tacos with rice and beans and all came quickly and were very good. I will definitely return here to try some of the other dishes. read more

Frida's Cantina was a fun new spot to visit in Bangor. The food was nice - few vegetarian options but I had the cheese enchiladas. It was okay, the rice and beans were well spiced! We also had some nice Lucky Girl beers! Best thing about this place: Key Lime Pie. So so good. read more

It's very clean and nice and bright inside. The server was very pleasant. Ok here goes: I had read reviews and also heard from friends that the food was good. The chips were thicker than normal but good & I believe homemade. The salsa was good but spicy to the point of our lips burning. The server asked if we wanted chips & salsa we said yes. We were not offered a refill though so evidently you get one shot even though the basket didn't have a lot in it. Hubby had Frida's fajitas with steak (3.00 upcharge). The sauce was spicy and it was brought out as plated in your home. There was no sizzling on the pan. He said the steak was fairly tender but he wasn't impressed. The rice was VERY garlicky and the beans were ok I had the 3 enchiladas. One ground beef, 1 cheese and one grilled chicken. I had the ranchero sauce on top and it was topped with cheese. The salsa topping was very sparse and the sour cream consisted of a watery drizzle (maybe a half teaspoon) over the little bit of lettuce. So far not impressed. The ground beef was seasoned but had a spice that to me was offensive, the cheese one was good and the chicken was just ok. My husband tried the 3 and was not a fan and would not even have another bite of the ground beef. If he can't eat it it's bad - he eats anything. My rice also was VERY garlicky and ai don't like beans. We brought leftovers home but only to give to the stray cats that roam around our farm. It was VERY VERY disappointing and honestly kind of pricey for a lunch menu compared to El Patron (which is excellant) or Los Ranchos which is close to us also. I have no clue what that spice was but again if my husband can't eat a food it's bad No return trip and we're really disappointed we didn't go somewhere else. I don't know about anyone else but I look forward to going out to eat and when it's bad and I've paid a fairly high price 16.00 & 19 00 for a lunch portion it ruins my day read more

First and foremost: the decor is FANTASTIC. Just beautiful. I was pretty shocked at the lovely colors and designs. Like being transported somewhere that isn't Bangor (no offense!). Onto the food! Chips and salsa: homemade and DELICIOUS. The husband ordered their tinga chicken burrito and truly enjoyed it! Their fish tacos were what I ordered and they were very good. I loved their rice and beans very much. The whole experience was unexpected and fully enjoyable. We can't wait to come back and try some of their other offerings! They have a patio, which will be wonderful this summer. Oh, I also ordered their Smokey Paloma... let me tell you...WOW. It was refreshing, slightly sweet, slightly salty, and smokey? You bet. It's probably one of the best I've had. Get your tuchuses down here, pronto. I feel that once the word is out that this place exists, we will have to wait in line for a seat. I usually wait a few months after a new place opens but it's winter and I'm already bored with limited choices. Frida's open for a few weeks now. I messaged for a reservation in advance; wasn't necessary. Their website is a work in progress; for now, best bet is Facebook. Note the somewhat unusual hours. They have an interesting weekend "semi-American" (my words) brunch menu. Delightful, clever interior decor with lots of Frida on the walls, paintings and even pillows. Standard and high-top seating. Exterior painted bright blue. Here's the deal: like most independent new restaurants, they should be learning as they go along. Margaritas were on the sweet side for me. Draft beer choice is mostly from nearby Lucky Girl craft brewery; heard rumor Lucky Girl is owner of Frida's. Would like a couple of Mexican beers on tap. Menu is very difficult to read with black background - dramatic, cool look but just not practical. Additional lighting along front wall would help. On to the food: fresh chips and great, perfectly spiced salsa are included with meal. Relatively small basket for 4 people; free refills upon request. We all went to the entrees - steak in fajitas had great flavor; shrimp not so much. Chimichanga was fried too long; the flavor was overwhelmed by the shell. Average chicken burrito. Meals come with beans and rice; they were served barely warm. Rice had unusual spice - maybe cinnamon or nutmeg?? Beans did not have depth of flavor I look for. Service was well-meaning but somewhat hit or miss. Just little things that should get better in time. Food was served in reasonable amount of time. For now, a nice addition to the area. Spotted this place was open on the way home this Sunday and stopped in for a snack and a drink. My partner got a Sandia, watermelon cocktail, while I got a smoky Paloma. Both drinks were delicious and full of fresh flavor. Wasn't quite time for dinner and lunch wasn't too long prior, so we snacked on a shrimp cocktail. It was fresh and sumptuous. Would order again. If I had any critical feedback at all it would be that the freshly fried chips are too narrow to actually scoop anything up. THE BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN MICHIGAN. My wife and I have a house in Dowagiac Mi. and were lucky enough to run into this restaurant about the time they opened. You can not get better service, fresher Mexican food and a better atmosphere anywhere. And all in Bangor Mi. I am from Chicago I have a very high standard when it comes to food and what I eat. Good all around. I ordered a soft corn tortilla dish that contained three tacos filled with slow cooked beef -- basically Mexican seasoned pot roast. Tender, juicy and lean. To drink I ordered a delicious, refreshing sangria that came complete with fresh fruits, even though it's not on the drinks menu. (I later learned sangria originated in Spain and Portugal, so it is not really a Mexican drink.) But Frida's bartender obliged nicely. My guest ordered a chicken taco plate and a margarita. She liked them both. That's significant because she's a discerning diner due to dietary restrictions; the chef accommodated her needs well. Of the Margarita my friend said, "Whoo, strong, but I like it that way!" Decor alone is worth visiting here -- its murals, paintings, objects, and other artistic flourishes bring you into famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's world. A few works are for sale and painted by area artists. Good place for dinner if you're heading back to Kalamazoo from a day at the beach on Lake Michigan -- it is on M43 a little ways past Bangor. read more

Stopped for dinner. This is a new restaurant in Bangor. The decor is open with a fireplace. It has a bar but this is not a bar/grill/ sports bar. It is a dining establishment. I enjoyed a house margarita and shrimp fajitas. The salsa had a good kick and the chips seemed to be freshly made. The fajitas could have had a little more spice. Great food. Great service. Very clean and so brightly decorated with a lot of colorful artwork! Their chips are amazing and so are their drinks. Heard this place had opened so we decided to check it out. Inside is very nice lighting could use some improvement as it is near impossible to read the menu ( printed on black backing) in dim light! We both ordered the steak fajitas which were good but on the expensive side considering between the two of us we got less than one person would get at other Mexican restaurants in the area. Was good but kind of sparse. They have a great beer menu of which we did not partake due to crappy road conditions. The beef empanadas were extremely good but once again 2 for 13 dollars on the expensive side but obviously very good and homemade. All and all food was good Burt on the expensive side considering no drinks and was still over 60 dollars, a couple of beers would have pushed it to near 80 read more

Chips were soggy. Not off to a great start. Ordered an order of chicken quesadillas and chicken fajitas. Pretty decent food. Got our bill and $3.00 extra for chicken in each dish! Asked the waitress about this as it did not indicate it in the menu. "Sorry about that" was the response, would of been nice to know before paying $40 for two sub-par dishes. Would of ordered different dishes if I knew they was an up charge for adding meat. Not entirely disappointed but it's a little ridiculous this isn't being informed to customers. read more

Worst dinner experience ever... Sat ourselves to dirty tables while the management sat at the bar... 6 bucks for chips and salsa, no Mexican restaurant should charge for chips and salsa in my opinion!! Then you can't buy a pitcher of margaritas for your table, only 10-13 dollar margaritas or cocktails. Which by the way were so damn small for the price. Then on top of that they were the very worst drinks ever... I tried my wife's who refused to drink it and it literally tasted like watermelon rine water!!! They had barely any of the beers on their menu, none that I asked for and I ended up drinking water. We order food and then they don't even have everything on the menu and had to order something else. The whole time we're being bombarded by flies.. when the food came it was merely mediocre at best. 1 of 4 finished our meals. Small portions for the price you pay compared to any other restaurants around. The only professional part was when they comped the drink my wife couldn't drink. Trust me I would never go back and would advise anyone who wants their money's worth to go elsewhere. Not worth your wkd date night budget at all. Sadly we were so disappointed we ended up going to the Bangor tavern just for a pallette changer and were much happier. While this is our first visit to Frida's, Lucky Girls has been a favorite of ours for several years. Since we live in Bangor and our preference is Mexican over BBQ we'll definitely be regulars here. Frida's is bright and airy and full of interesting art. We went today for brunch and ended up ordering from the regular menu. I had a house margarita which wasn't sweet enough for me but our server quickly and happily brought me a shot of simple syrup and that made it perfect (I think the bartender forgot to add it). My empanadas were crunchy, filled with nicely seasoned beef and the avocado salsa brought just a bit of heat. They come with a simple green salad topped with queso fresco. My husband had beef enchiladas with green sauce. It's a good sized portion of 3 enchiladas and was served with beans and rice. He liked that the beans weren't entirely smooth and had some whole beans. It's a bit pricey, but most places are these days and I don't mind paying if the food is as good as it is here at Frida's! read more
