3.5 stars is probably a more accurate response for me. A 3 indicates that it's acceptable and that I intend to give it another try before abandoning. A 4 indicates that it's good and I will definitely be back. Food: was pretty good leaning slight closer to more authentic Mexican food than many of similar places in Portage and Kalamazoo. Our table had a burrito, salad, and street tacos. Everyone seem to enjoy the quality and taste. See attached picture of my Burrito Ranchero. The included guacamole, picante, and sour cream are extremely small. Service: expected a little more responsiveness. It wasn't really busy for a Monday dinner seating. But many of our extra requested food items ie fresh jalapenos, cheese, and salsa came later with meal getting cold. Our server had no sense of urgency or hospitality. Atmosphere: We liked the seating which was private enough to have an enjoyable conversation but open enough to observe other around us enjoying themselves. We will be back for sure. Great service, good atmosphere, excellent food, good prices. Our kids ordered off the a la carte menu and it was $2.50 I believe for a single taco. They wouldn't eat the sides of the kids meals anyway so that worked great for us. I had the authentic steak tacos and my husband had a steak burrito. We both loved it! They even have a little outdoor dining area by the pond and we found some big Koi you can feed (you can buy fish food by the bathroom area indoors). They also give you chips and salsa. read more

Casa Tequila is a new restaurant in the Mattawan area. We love how close it is and the amount of food/drink selections at the restaurant. We have been back at least once per week. We have never had to wait long as the restaurant has been busy, which is great to see. No dish we have eaten has ever been bad. It's been great food. Service has also been great. Found this place on yelp and they were right. Start with the decor is beautiful the staff attentive and fun. Food came out quickly and as we are traveling that's a real plus. But of course the most important was the food which was delicious and portions more than we could eat. The carnitas were juicy and good flavor but the Cameron's suprema were beyond wonderful! Casa Tequila is finally open! My family and I were excited to give it a ride on opening night. The fajitas were excellent with endless flavors bursting in my mouth. The meat was seasoned well...if you know what I mean. The carnitas were great. Who doesn't like mOiSt pork? The steak & cheese burrito was just your basic burrito but a solid choice for immature palates. The salsa was a little watery but got the job done....and it's perfect for people who prefer to just drink the salsa while they inhale the chips. The ambiance was a whole vibe. Take all my money. The mariachi music lightly playing with the smells & sound of fajitas sizzling...literally take all my money. We like the Ambiance, the staff is not rude by stand offish, except the manger is great. Food is so so. It's hard in my opinion to be good at everything on a menu that size. Only things I will order anymore is the Barbacoa and Carnitas. Along with the queso dip with chorizo.. My family and I have tried several of their dishes because we can walk to the restaurant. We've gone often to try things. The best thing I can say about Casa Teauila is "meh". We really wanted to love this place but it disappointed on so many levels. First off....anyone who calls this place "authentic" needs to have their head checked. It is far from authentic. It's nothing more than your basic Americanized Tex-Mex fair. Food was bland and lacking any real flavor. The salsa with the chips and salsa has a nice smokey flavor but it's terribly thin. The wife had the fajitas chipotle and I tried the chicken chimichanga. The chimi was just not good. The wife's fajitas were okay but nothing special. With so many other options for Mexican food in SW Michigan, this place is far down on the list. Had an early supper last night, only waited about 20 minutes to seat our party of 7. Service was on point with Miguel. The margarita was quite good. I had the burrito ranchero, my wife had a steak taco salad - both were fantastic! We mentioned to our server that we had 2 birthdays in our group and both were presented with flan desserts. Food is good. I love the chips and salsa. Chicken fajitas are delicious. Last time we visited our waiter checked on us very sparingly and didn't come back with what we had asked for. Finally tried Casa Tequila last night.. we were super impressed at first...It was busy even at 5 o'clock. Food was good, service was okay. However, I later changed my mind as both of us who ate some form of a chicken fajitas (I got a fajita salad, my significant other got fajita nachos) got food poisoning and were up all night sick. I'm not sure after this experience we'll be able to convince ourselves to give it a second try, but we'll see. read more

I ordered the Taco Salad with beef. The description in the menu said it came with cheese, lettuce, tomato, guacamole, sour cream, and beans. I asked for no beans but extra guacamole. When my salad arrived, there was no guacamole, no tomato, and very little sour cream. Basically, it was just beef, lettuce, and a dab of sour cream. I asked the waiter for more guacamole to replace the beans. He brought me a generous portion, for which I was charged as if it were a side--$5.99, on top of a $11.99 taco salad without beans, tomato, or sufficient sour cream. I won't return. read more

Went back for a second try and it was yummy. Everything was clean and lovely. It was lunchtime and we were seated and served right away with drinks and chips/salsa. Placed our order and bam - it was on the table in minutes! We had lunch fajitas and tacos. If I could change one tiny thing, it would be thicker salsa; but it was yummy as is.
