Top three reasons I love this place: 1. The sashimi is melt in your mouth delicious. 2. The service is adorably polite. 3. The presentation of your food is always neat and tidy (ie. SO EAT-ABLE)! I work close-by and often go here. It gets busy during the lunch hour, so you may want to call in ahead of time. I guess waiting for the food is the only downside if you're pressed for time and unprepared; but hey, it's well worth the wait! Don't let the name fool you. This is not just a take-out spot, but a real restaurant with adequate seating. In fact, it's bigger and more comfortable that most downtown "fast" sushi restaurants. I'm amazed at the value, and at the quality at these prices. The maki roll platter, for $20, has 42 pieces - no filler - and is enough for 3 people or 2 hungry ones. Cali, dynamite, bc, alaska, and spicy tuna rolls, and tuna and salmon maki. All the rolls are super fresh. All the platters are great for parties or group feeding. Seeing these reviews on yelp.... I could not believe how I could have a bad meal from Fresh..... RIGHT! I was given the responsibility of ordering sushi for a group of 4. I had set my mind on getting it from somewhere else, but this place just just sparked in my head! I found their menu online and saw the many combos and selections that Fresh had to offer. I saw the assorted combo which seemed to include a bit of everything including sushi, sashimi, rolls - the whole nine yard. For $40, the combo came with 56 pieces. We walked in on an early saturday night to pick up our food and the restaurant only had one table eating. The waitress was very courteous and offered us green tea while we waited for our food to go. I have to say that the fish was fresh, and the pieces were well portioned. Tuna and salmon was fresh and soft, and there was a lot of variety... can't say that everything was everyone's cup of tea... like fish roe, octopus, clam, calamari.. but it definitely gave us a chance to try something new. When urged by our late Friday evening cravings, we realized that there is a sushi place on our block that I had a takeout menu for. Going through it it was clear that it's a very common Vancouver type menu with all possible options. Things that stood out: - Doesn't have the most obvious and foot-heavy traffic location. That means that in Vancouver there will probably be several other sushi places closer to your location than this one. - They plaster on their doors that they have brown rice. So, that's good! - Menu has a footnote "Contains Raw fish or Roe". Did they get sued like peanut butter companies who now write "contains nuts" or coffee companies who must write "hot beverage" on their cups? - it has to be a weird marketing technique to name your restaurant "Fresh Take-Out"! Sure, it works well for SEO and all that, but isn't there a better name? Outside of those points, the place is nice, gets your order right, and sushi in on par with most common other sushi places here in town. read more

We were visiting Vancouver and staying across the road. Our initial visit was convenience based, but we were back each day based on how fresh, delicious and fast they were. Our take out order was accurate every time. Kids faves were the spicy dynamite, beef teriyaki rolls and I loved their simple avocado rolls with miso soup. It's a relatively good deal in downtown Vancouver. Food is fine and the portion is good for its value. There are many Japanese restaurants these days that are overpriced and of very average quality. The only reason I take one star off is because of the poor ventilation inside and when the restaurant gets busy you don't always get the best service you want. I really, really like this place. First off, the service is great. Every time we've been here we were helped pretty much right away. It's not a very big place and the server is very attentive and helpful. We always get some tea before our food arrives as well. The food itself is great. I'm very particular when it comes to sushi and I usually have something to complain, but not here. There's just enough rice to complement the roll (a lot of places have too much rice on their rolls) and the ingredients are always fresh and therefore very tasty. A good indication of the quality of the sushi is the avocado, and it's been green and soft every single time, not a brown spot in sight. The size of the sushi pieces are perfect as well, not too big (another common theme with sushi restaurants). One of the best things about this place is the price of the dishes. We just had dinner for two for $19 including taxes. I'm sorry, but you can't beat that anywhere even close to Robson St. So all in all considering the food, service and prices are great, this place is truly awesome. The only two reasons for not giving 5 stars here is that the location is okay, but not great (busy road). It is however conveniently close to my house. The other is that the ambiance is just okay, but considering it's more of a lunch/take-out place this is understandable. The place is clean and tastefully decorated though. It baffles me how few good, reasonably priced sushi takeout places there are in downtown Vancouver. Are we just too spoiled here? Jaded perhaps by too many unpleasant bathroom trips after eating the frozen monster sashimi pieces at Samurai? Who knows. With that in mind, I was skeptical when I got a reco from a friend via Twitter for Fresh Take-Out. After testing out my first take-out order of avocado roll, salmon sashimi, and spinach gomaae, I was pleasantly surprised but not blown away. It was nice to have the option of getting brown rice for my roll, and the sashimi was fresh and generously portioned - TOO generous if anything, as I had issues getting the last few bites down. The menu covers your standard Japanese restaurant bases. In addition to sushi, there are a few noodle and rice dishes, bento boxes, etc., as well as a handful of special "Rainbow Roll" type rolls. Prices were reasonable (my order, with the surcharge for the brown rice, came to around $15). The location might be a bit off-putting for some depending on where in downtown you're coming from, as it's located right off the Cambie Street bridge on Smithe and Beatty. I came here during my lunch hour and got their spicy tuna/salmon don. It was very good as I love the spicy gochujang sauce that they use (the spicy sauce that only korean japanese restaurants use). My only tip is that if you're a sit in customer you may be fighting with the take out line for the waitress' attention. So expect a slightly longer wait if you're sitting in. Update: if you're thinking the waitresses will even look your direction when you're a sit down customer and there is a line up for take out at the cashier, you're very mistaken. read more

I cannot believe that I've lived downtown for 9 years and have only now decided to try this place. I haven't had everything on their menu but from what I have tried, I like what I'm tasting and I'd gladly come here again. Spicy Salmon and/or Tuna Don has been my favourite to grab for lunch or dinner. It's more than enough for me to have the entire day. It's too much for me to have in a single meal but it wouldn't be enough if I was to split it with my fiance. It's decently priced though so it won't break the bank to pick up something else if you do decide to get something for a bunch of people. I did try their sashimi salad once, however, and my only complaint would be that, for $12-13, I would at least like to have enough salad to share. Maybe it's because I got this particular order to go, but before my fiance came home for dinner, I decided to take two conservative chopstick bites worth of salad mix and already it looked as though I had eaten most of it. I wasn't expecting a whole ton of sashimi but I was definitely alarmed at how little veg we got in the container. Usually when I order salad in a sushi restaurant, I get more salad than expected so I wasn't prepared for this, and had to run out and grab more food before DC came home. Having Fresh minutes from home (walking!!!) is a great! First time I was there, I ordered the unagi don and let me tell u - I was hooked. Being a condiment addict, I must note there was no shortage of that awesome unagi sauce! Nothing crappier (in my books) than dry rice. Oh and the size of the sashimi is unreal - they are Huuuge! Lastly, they rock brown rice here, only draw back is the surcharge that comes with it! I was starving last night and had only an hour to pick up something quick, fast and tasty before heading to a hockey game. My fiance suggested Fresh Japanese Take Out a couple of blocks away. I looked it up on Yelp first as most Californians do but only saw 2 reviews. I guess Yelp isn't as prominent in Canada as it is in the states but I was starving and decided to take a chance. I called in and the waitress gave me a quick rundown of the menu. I ordered the the Maki Platter for 2 people. There were 42 pieces which consisted of California Roll, Dynamite Roll, Alaska Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, B.C. Roll, Tuna and Salmon Maki. Excellent.... Spicy Tuna is my favorite! Pretty darn delicious, and yes very FRESH and very fast. Walked in to pick up my food 15 minutes later and it was ready. Staff was very friendly.
