We have been seeing Tony for years and feel like we have won the lottery in terms of mechanics. On the recommendation of my father in law, we went to Good News Garage almost a year ago for a burning smell emitting from my engine. They recommended almost $7500 worth of work for 10 different "issues." We had Tony take a look, who saw only 2 of these issues-- he said he wasn't sure what they were talking about regarding the rest of their recommendations. When I pulled up, the attendant was on his phone with his back turned, and it took a few minutes to get his attention. After I gave a clear instruction, he started the pump and went back to his phone, not paying attention. I had to call out to him to stop because he had already gone past what I requested. When I pointed it out, he responded dismissively and was noticeably rude. I had a similar experience here a few days ago, and coming back today was clearly a mistake. I've been coming here regularly before work, but this week I had a really disappointing experience. A young attendant pumped my gas as usual, and later that day my "check engine" light came on. When I returned around 6 a.m. to ask about my gas cap, the employee pulled out a bucket full of gas caps, which was very concerning (Are they selling these on EBay??) It made me feel that something suspicious might be going on. I drive a BMW Gran Turismo and take good care of it, so this situation really upset me -- especially given how casually it was handled when I brought it up. Attendants here are consistently polite, but I recently noticed for the first time that I was being charged ten cents extra for gas. This used to be clear in the advertised prices, but at one point they began advertising "same price or credit or cash." That eventually changed, perhaps when the law changed to prohibit extra charges for credit cards. However, they have continued to charge ten cents extra without making that clear, and since they do not allow customers to pump their own gas, customers are unlikely to notice. Anyway, buyer beware--if you use a credit card, your are paying ten cents extra, and they are breaking the law. read more

I've used Fresh Pond Gas for over 25 years. Tony is known as a local treasure: he is honest and kind to everyone. He, his son Moussa and Martin are fantastic mechanics who go aboveand beyond for their customers. I can't count the times that Tony has told me what to do in a pinch, changed a headlight at no cost or saved me money by seeing through unnecessary repairs that the dealer recommended. He has always fixed the problems quickly and for a fraction of the price. Had me move to another because the pump "wasnt working" then proceeded to charge my card almost $50 while I was asking them to stop it around 30 they stood there and smiled at me like they couldn't understand what I was saying when we just had a full conversation. so essentially asked for 30 of gas and got A $80 charge on my card. read more

Terrible experience trying to get gas here. Having had an experience elsewhere where my card went missing, I politely asked for my credit card back after they swiped it. They refused, handed me by card back, and told me they wouldn't pump my gas since my request was unreasonable. Ok. That's fine. Plenty of other gas stations around. read more

Go somewhere else!!!! The man working at 4:40 am on Sept 8, 2019 could not have been more rude. I pulled up to the tank and he just stared at me from in the office... didn't move . Finally came out when I rolled my window down. I asked if I was supposed to fill my own tank to which he replied, "no it is full service" I was in a rental car and was having troubles finding how to release the gas cap. After literally 20 seconds of looking, he pounded on my car and told me to leave until I found out how to release the gas cap. I asked for help and he told me to leave.???!! Maybe he was just on drugs... he was acting that way... I would be scared to go back there as a woman at early or late hours!!!! I just left... they lost a customer! Stay away from the Indian guy working there (who couldn't speak English well)... scary, rude and violent. read more

This review is for the gas station, because, as an auto-less urbanite (and a GIRL, no less), I wouldn't know anything about the service center. (Okay, I was being snarky about the girl comment, but seriously, I don't have a car, so no clue how their garage is). So, as mentioned, this place advertises "CASH ONLY". As mentioned, that's ridiculous, because do you expect that when you get a $500 overhaul on your car, they expect you to pay with cash? The attitude just warns you to be on the lookout. I stopped here to fill up my rental car before returning it down in Harvard Square. I pull up alongside the pump, and the guy (hereafter known as Rico Suave) tells me to pull up further. Doesn't ask, but tells. Why, I don't know, but whatever. Fill it up, please, regular. Don't top it off. Let me tell you, they never listen when you say "don't top it off". Anyway, the total reaches $22 and change, and the guy comes up and tops it off to $23. Because they've insisted "CASH ONLY," I handed over two tens and three ones. So far so good. Rico takes my money and saunters, meanders, struts over to the office, where he scrutinizes my bills, and returns with one of them. "I dun like this one. Give me a different one." You've got to be freaking kidding me. It's 8:50 AM, I've got to return this rental car, and now one of the one-dollar bills I've given you doesn't meet your personal standards because it has, gasp, a coffee stain on it? And you're demanding another? Oh, why certainly, Good Sir Suave, let me search down in the bottom of my handbag for another, more suitable dollar bill to meet your exacting qualifications. Puh-leeze. Of course, did I say that? No. I silently fumed and found another dollar to appease him and went on my way. And even forgot to ask for a receipt because I wanted to leave so badly. Before you read the bad reviews - read this. Tony's master mechanic diagnosed the car problem in 5 minutes and Tony was nice enough to work on it first thing in the morning while I waited for the car. The prices are extremely reasonable (I don't think it get better than this) and I was even able to bring my own parts. Honest, quick and professional service. AVOID AVOID AVOID. If I ran out of gas right in front of this place, I would get out and walk to the next closest gas station. I noted the huge CASH ONLY sign and counted the cash in my wallet. Asked for that amount. As soon as I see he's putting more in my car than I asked for, I yell at him to stop. He acts like this is some clever ruse to scam him out of $1.50. Because every good scam artist knows that you stop the guy as soon as possible, only totally obvious rookie grifters go for the full $2! And wouldn't you know, when I don't have enough cash for this extra gas I didn't ask for, suddenly the "CASH ONLY" sign is just for show. He insists that I pay with a credit card, ADDING another $1 onto the total, claiming it's a surcharge for using a credit card. Whether or not he honestly misheard me, I don't know. But there's nothing honest or forgivable about being a colossal asshole, forcing me to pay for more than I asked for, adding an illegal surcharge and charging my credit card more than I authorized. read more

I forgot I needed gas and didn't pull into my usual station, then the light came on and I decided to stop here. Big mistake: it's both full serve (whyyyyyy) and has a surcharge for credit cards. Both things I avoid like the plague, and neither is advertised until you get to a pump. Realized my inspection sticker was expiring the next day. Went in for the sticker. They did it pretty quick and also recommended engine oil which I knew was due anyways. Also had my fogged up headlights restored that look like brand new now! Very professional and prices were great! Will definitely go back. read more

I've been going to this auto body for years and years. Have had different problems with different cars. Always a great service, super friendly, very polite, NEVER mind explaining to me in great detail what is wrong with my car unlike other mechanics who ask to get out from the working area and wait until they are finished. I've had Tony and his crew do quite a bit of repair work for me- all for reasonable prices and done quickly. No-nonsense, no upselling. And no charge for some electrical troubleshooting when the problem didn't happen under his watch. 24h gas, now takes cards. Garage for repairs is 8 to 4 Mon-Sat. The mechanic at Fresh Pond Gas, Tony, is a great mechanic and a great guy. Family, friends, and I have used him for ten years or so. I even began driving/towing my car to Tony from Amherst after trying six (or more) mechanics out there and finding them all to be shoddy, overpriced, and utterly dishonest. In contrast, Tony has done minor work pro bono on a number of occasions and I have never had any qualms with the quality of his work, his timeliness, or his prices when it comes to more substantial work. He is also one of the few mechanics around that will tell you NOT to have work done because it isn't necessary--or not yet, anyway--or because the car just isn't worth it (ouch). Such is the gratitude I feel for this man that I actually enjoy giving him my money--in marked contrast from the prototypical mechanic/client dynamic (maybe it helps that we, by proxy, bombed the bejesus out of is country a few years back too???). I had a tail-light problem and Tony looked at it for about an hour / hour and half. He replaced one of the wires and replaced one of the breakers. The charge was $30. I would give him 5 stars but I haven't seen how he is with bigger repair jobs. read more

Thank God they are here.. I find myself a semi-regular at this place. I'm not gonna lie, I HATE pumping gas. I hate stopping for gas period. I need an electric car, or one of those Back to the Future flux compacitor cars... trash... Oh, back to the review. The guys that work are there are nice, but the pump glass is scratched out. I asked for $20 and the guy charged me $25? I was too embarassed to check, so I went with it. Tony, who is the owner and supervising mechanic at Fresh Pond Gas, is great. He was recommended by a colleague; I have been getting my car repaired by him since 2006 and I am completely satisfied with his service. He is honest, knowledgeable, and straight forward. Tony is great about not telling you that your car needs optional repairs. He has sometimes advised me to wait and see whether I want to fix something, if it has not been urgent. Although the place advertises as cash only, this only applies to gasoline purchases. Contrary to Katie R's speculation, you are never charged a fee if you pay for repairs using credit or debit. I am satisfied with the "cash only for gasoline" policy because it saves Tony money and he passes on the savings to you through lower gas prices. I was very surprised to read the comments about poor service at the pump. I have had nothing but pleasant service when I get gas at Tony's. If I have told them how much gas I want in terms of a cash value, I have always gotten that exact cash value of gas, and I have never had anyone reject a bill I gave them. I was even allowed to leave and go to the bank, one time, to get cash when I incorrectly calculated how much cash I had on me and got more gas than I could pay for. read more

Tony has seen us through everything from an ancient Toyota Camry, to a soccer-mom Volvo, to a number of ill-advised teen-aged boy hot rods. I've been to this place multiple times and for the most part it has been okay. It is very convenient to have someone pump your gas for you after a long day of work. However, the most recent time I went one of the attendants started filling up my car and then walked away to charge my credit card. Before he returned, the gas started gushing out of my gas tank because the pump was broken and didn't turn off properly. Gas flowed out of my car for a solid 5 seconds before he returned. The attendant refused to take more than $2 off my bill because in his opinion, "no more than a gallon" of overflow. It is impossible for him to know that because he was inside for the first few seconds that the gas was overflowing. He also couldn't comprehend the fact that I had to go spend $15 on a car wash after being over charged for gas that was on the ground. He refused to refund my credit card and continued to argue with me and wouldn't give me my credit card back until he was done explaining his side of the story. I will never go back here, and I would advise anyone else to stay away. read more

I have never left a Yelp review before, but I feel the need to let people know about Tony and his guys. Finding a mechanic that you can really trust is tough, but anyone and everyone should feel good about going to Tony. He is as knowledgeable as you can find in the business and honest as they come. But best of all, he tries to "fix" you car, not just replace parts. Here are a few examples of what he has done for my wife and I over the years: Nissan Murano with the engine light going on - the dealer said they needed to replace the pipe that runs from the gas cap to the tank. I don't remember what they were going to charge but it was a lot. Tony said to clean off the lip of the pipe and put a little vaseline on it. He offered to do it for us, but I did it myself. Problem solved. Saab 93 - clicking noise from right front wheel. Dealer said I needed to replace some metal guard inside the wheel well. Tony said that there was no problem driving it, but if I didn't like the noise he suggested he fasten it together with a nut and bolt first and if that didn't work we could replace. He did the nut and bolt at no charge and it solved the problem for the rest of the life of the car (50,000 plus miles). Acura MDX - following a scheduled maintenance / check the dealer gave my wife a list of needed repairs totaling more than $7,000. I took the car and the fancy printout of the problems they gave her to Tony and he put the car on the lift to check it out. When he called me a couple hours later he said "I really tried, but I can't find anything wrong with your car." No charge and 12,000 miles later the car is still fine (although he objected I did throw him $40 for his time). I've had him do other work over the years and he is fast and reasonable. I think he charges by the actual time worked, not by the "book time" that most mechanics use which way over estimates the time for repairs. This results in much lower charges that you would get elsewhere. Bottom line, Tony and his guys are outstanding. You can feel great bringing your car to them. read more

We have a lot of old cars in our family, and this is the place we go. Sometimes it's embarrassing, because Tony spends a little time diagnosing the problem and then sends us elsewhere because a) it's something he doesn't work on, i. e. transmission, or b) he finds nothing wrong, and doesn't make any money from us. When it is something he can take care of, he does it quickly and for a reasonable price. I have never been shocked at the price of a repair here. He also is quick to point out something else that needs to be done soon. Again, not always something that he can do, but something that should be done. And he does take credit cards for the repairs. Tony is a great mechanic! He knows what needs to be done, and does not make up problems to get more money. I had to get my car jumped by AAA so afterwards I dropped it off at Monro where they told me I needed a new battery, a new alternator, and that whoever had installed my radiator had done the wiring wrong such that the fans were running when not needed. Their quote was outrageous so I brought my car to Tony instead. He told me that there was actually no problem with the alternator, and that the fan running was not a big deal and I could leave it as is if I wanted. When I told him that Monro quoted me $600 (which did not include the fan) he laughed and said "what do they want to replace the whole car?!" I ended up getting the new battery and electing to fix the fan just in case, for a total of $311. Tony is as honest and helpful as Monro is rude and awful!! read more
