Herb Chambers attempted to charge me almost $4k to repairs they considered "mandatory," and Ted talked me off a ledge from selling my BMW and only made one repair that cost less than $900 and I walked away with a clean bill of health. These guys are incredible. Bottom line -- they fixed my mirror for free and saved me nearly $1,600! The staff at Foreign Auto Center are honest, down to earth, and incredibly capable. I'd trust my car with them any day. Longer story: a few weeks ago, a biker crashed into the mirror of my Volkswagen GTI while the car was parked. The biker was fine, but the impact bent the mirror away from the car's frame and out of position. I took it to the dealer and they quoted me nearly $1,600 for the fix (including a replacement mirror, fixing the frame, and labor). I thought this was a crazy amount of money and brought my car over to the guys at Foreign Auto Center. They were able to bend the part back into position, which they did FOR FREE, even though I offered to pay several times. I can't recommend this shop highly enough and am so happy I came by. read more

Wow what a fantastic garage! Yesterday when I called to ask if I could bring my car in to get the tyre service light turned off (a certain "other" VW garage had told me a few years ago that I had to take the car in - and get charged of course - if the tyre light didn't go off after I had added pressure). The Foreign Auto mechanic ( sorry didn't catch his name) very patiently explained how I could do this on my own, talked me through finding the switch, and we got it sorted. And of course I didn't have the bother of taking the car in ...or paying! That's what I call helpful! ( And have always been happy with their previous services and repair.) read more

Got a deal on my radiator ($150), but got robbed on my brakes/rotors ($650). I guess that's how things balance out but still, consistency matters. That being said, they did fine work, even if I didn't need the rotors for another $300, you never know, right? Sometimes you do. Sometimes you find out later and you feel ripped off. Call around I guess. Better yet, learn how to do your own brakes, like I have. It's dead simple and oh, the rotors, that takes an extra five seconds to swap them. These guys all want to charge like they're doing brain surgery. I learned my lesson. Update to the comment from Ted A. Exactly! $350 would've been reasonable! It was another $300 on top of that! I have been bringing my 14 year old car to Foreign Auto Center for 3 years. Each time the service gets better! Most recently I had a strange noise when driving. Within a short period of time, Ted discovered a rock in the tire after test driving. He then checked the pressure as the dreaded exclamation point was shining. I brought my car here due to a drain on the battery. The positive reviews on yelp made it seem promising. They estimated two days to perform some diagnostic tests and fix whatever the issue was. After two days I called them and they asked to extend in order to perform more tests... Fine by me as long as they're working to fix it. Another three days go by and I call them again. They tell me that in actuality they do not have the time or staffing to diagnose and repair my car. They had not run simple diagnostic tests and could not tell me what was wrong. They had simply wasted my time by telling me they could work on my car when they were overbooked and understaffed. What they had done was given me a new battery that I paid for in hopes that it would fix the draining to a certain extent (the old battery was very old and they told me a new battery would help). After having wasted 5 days with my car parked in from of their shop, I picked it up and drove from their shop to another shop and the mechanic there was horrified at how they had installed the new battery. Not only did they gave me a battery that was too small for my car, THEY INSTALLED IT BALANCED ON TOP OF A PIECE OF STYROFOAM. This shows that they knowingly installed a new battery that was too small, charged me full retail price for it, and installed it balanced on top of a piece of styrofoam that could have easily caught fire in a relatively small accident. Please stay away from this place. There are many other reputable auto shops in the area that will service you car with integrity. read more

The first time they worked on my car without issue; fixing it for hundreds less than the dealership. The second time, I discovered their SCAM. When I picked up my car, I was asked, "Does it make a clunking noise when you brake?" to which I responded, "No, why, does it now??" and of course they told me "no". Well, one day later, there's that brand new noise THEY mentioned to me!!! I called them back and explained my frustration and confusion, they basically told me that they never said that (my husband was standing right next to me at the time, he heard them too) but that they'd look at it. They took my car ALL DAY and found nothing wrong. But the next day, there's the clunking in my brakes still, the clunking that THEY brought up in the first place, the clunking I had never heard before bringing it to them. If they think I'm bringing my car back to have them fix whatever they caused, they're sorely mistaken. They're untrustworthy and the only reason they got 2 stars is because at least they were polite when lying to my face. read more

Five stars is simply not enough for this shop. For years, I've been on a quest to find an affordable, honest mechanic who really knows how to take care of my somewhat touchy VW Beetle. Foreign Auto Repair (specifically, Nick) is all of these things and more. He can identify problems correctly at the drop of a hat, always looks for the most cost-effective fix, and is 100% trustworthy. I've referred a few friends here (some of whom have seen mechanics other than Nick), and everyone has been nothing short of thrilled with their service and results. Not that Foreign needs another rave, 5-star review, but based on my experiences there it does deserve it. I've had bad experiences at a couple other area mechanics, not in terms of workmanship but rather in performing unnecessary and unauthorized repairs at high prices, so I've been thrilled to finally find the reliable, trustworthy, and no-nonsense crew at Foreign. One example from my most recent trip to Foreign: more than one year ago, I had a Somerville mechanic diagnose over $1000 in repairs to my radiator and coolant system (after charging over $100 for the diagnosis!). That estimate sounded high, and when I questioned the mechanic about cheaper alternatives, he told me that at his shop they did things "the right way." When I took my car to Foreign a week later for a second opinion, they laughed at the estimate and recommended waiting until the repair work was necessary. Last week, nearly a year later, I got the necessary repairs done for less than $300 dollars, including parts and labor. Foreign also gets bonus points for calling prior to doing the work with precise estimates and low-to-no apparent pressure to have the work done. read more

I have been going to Foreign Auto for past 2 years, since my BMW got out of warranty. Nick is great. It's hard to find an honest auto repair shop but this is definitely one of the best ones I have been to! They will let you drive out without paying anything if the car doesn't need any repair. Every time I leave my car there, I am confident that they won't charge me for anything that's not needed. They are very efficient with their repairs and schedules too. I was quoted for getting my front pads and rotors replaced by Ted last week. He told me it will be around $400-450. He told me they don't have parts but if I can bring the car in next week, they can get it done in 3-4 hours. I brought it in on the day we agreed. I dropped the car off with Jimmy as Ted was out and he told me he will call me when he is done with checking at the car and figuring whether only front or both front & rear brakes need to be done. He did in an hour or so and told me only front pads and rotors should be replaced and it will cost me $570, which was almost 50% more than what Ted quoted me a week earlier. Make sure you ask them to confirm the quote you are given unless you don't mind paying 40-50% more than what you were previously told. read more

Nick at Foreign Auto Service is more than you'd look for in a good mechanic. He is honest and knowledgeable, and their prices are very good. I have a 2006 Audi A3 that was leaking major coolant. It is just off of warranty and I was afraid of a leaky head gasket which could have cost thousands. Nick and his little helper (I think his name is Malaka, that's what they called him) spent about 20 minutes doing a pressure test and told me I need a new radiator. I was a little skeptical that they didn't remove any parts to get a better look at the radiator, but I was desperate to get my car back for a July 4th road trip. They replaced the radiator (in one day!!!) at half the cost of the dealership, and my car has been running beautifully since. Thanks Nick! I'll be back. read more

Yes, yes, I am. Please deliver me from the oven that is my car... and they did. Nick is a happy-go-lucky guy who knows his foreign cars and runs a great operation with excellent service. He will fix whatever you brought your car in for and suggest other needed repairs without pressure. "We'll fix it next time you come in," he says, "No need to do it all in one day." Okay :) His staff is friendly and respectful and the prices are right. For years I've been traveling from wherever I've lived to my hometown near the NH border. No more. I was in Boston to visit my sick daughter when my car started stalling out. My daughter yelped Foreign Auto Center - 5 minutes from where we were. Jimmy (their Honda specialist) immediately took a look at my 2006 Honda Accord, and diagnosed a broken air filter and quoted me $250 to fix it. I brought my Audi in for an alignment after a dealer who shall remain nameless jacked up my steering. Nick threw the car on the lift immediately after my wife dropped it off and showed her some things, including a plastic shield that was rubbing against a tire. I thought I only needed a front alignment, which he quoted me at $80. After further review, he saw that the back end was out of whack, too, and fixed that ... for only an extra $20. He took care of the plastic shield for free, and showed me all the technical bits as far the alignment went. He's a no-BS, serious mechanic, and his shop looks efficient. Everyone there seemed friendly enough, and--as a car buff--I was impressed to see them working on some rare autos (A Mercedes 190E 2.3, for example), as well as older Audis. I don't see the need to mess around with anyone else. read more
