They always did a good job fixing the vehicle, the prices were reasonable, and the main mechanic there always made sure I understood my options. I had ignition coil, door lock actuator, and ball joint work done there, so they seem to do most everything. I had hoped that I wouldn't have to deal with any further experience involving this business, but here goes. In September, 2011, my trusty old, but low mileage 1998 Saab 900 left me stranded in Newton. I had it towed to APA Automotive, and received a diagnosis that the distributor cap and wires were old and shot. Some $300 and one day later I was rolling again. Flash forward to Super Bowl Sunday, February 5, 2012. I'm on my way home, and the Saab conks out again, and gives me the exact same symptoms as the previous September. Car quit in mid-traffic, quietly rolls to a stop and refuses to start. I will skip over the details of waiting in a rapidly chilling car to be picked up, and the time off from work the next day to get the car towed. This time I took it to Foreign Auto Center in Cambridge. Diagnosis? Improperly wired distributor harness. Apparently the rotor wire was sloppily connected to the ignition coil causing it to arc and eventually short out. Foreign Auto Center had everything repaired the same day, added an oil change, checked all lights, tire pressure, greased door locks and hinges and I was on my way. The additional and consequential cost was not as much as it was when APA nearly destroyed my classic Mercedes, but here we have a record of two for two. (Check my previous review below.) Not a good statistic. Nothing personal against the folks at APA. They simply won't see me or any of my family or friends as customers in the future. read more

There was a time that I, several family members and friends went to Pete's. We would not trade him for the world. He was that good and very honest. I especially liked the way he treated women. He would not over charge and was consistent in pricing. He was very pleasant and respectful. He is the kind of mechanic everyone wanted. You could bring your car in and get it back on the same day. NEVER did I need to bring my car back because of inferior work. Problem is he retired and now there is a young person taking his place. This person is inappropriate and cocky and not at all respectful. Not sure of his work, could not get passed his arrogates. read more

I would definitely recommend APA Automotive. I had a low tire pressure indicator light come on after just having had new tires installed at Arco Tire and Services (in Somerville) the previous week. I immediately called Arco (more details about this in a forthcoming review), but they couldn't or wouldn't help. I went by APA Automotive and the mechanic there was extremely helpful, immediately checked the tire pressure, recognized that the two rear tires had been under inflated and inflated the tires to the correct pressure. read more

I was referred to APA by the Good News Garage for the replacement of all four tires and the repair of a (possible) bent rim. APA found no need to fix the rim and mounted and balanced new Goodyear Integrity tires for $504 including labor. This is about the cost I expected for this service, so no complaints. The guys at APA were polite and prompt, and I was able to pick up my car the same day. read more

I went to APA for a second opinion on my transmission. I was told by a mechanic at a different shop that I needed a whole new transmission. I took it to them and they found that in fact I did not need a new transmission but instead was dealing with a problem with the transmission fluid. Needless to say, I saved tons of money thanks to them! I had also mentioned that I was thinking of selling my car. They went through and inspected the car and made a list for me of all the things that needed repairs- free of charge. They were all very kind, thorough, and explained everything to me. I've been going to APA for years and always had excellent, fairly priced service. Pete was great, he retired, and Josh is great. don't know if Josh owns or manages, but he is always helpful and willing to suggest a diagnosis.Will spend some time helping for free if it's something simple. I don't understand the one-star review here; must have been a bad-mood day for at least one of the parties involved. Josh doesn't strike me as the sexist type. read more

Last May, our 2002 Mercedes C230k died and had to be towed -- it had an electrical problem and we were told by several people that it was very likely to be a bad alternator. We had the car towed to APA and Josh told us that the battery was bad, not the alternator. He installed a new battery and ran the car for over 24 hours. When we picked up the car, the electrical system was completely out of whack and the car didn't run properly. We brought it to a shop specializing in Mercedes' and the the mechanic there told us that the alternator was indeed shot and that running the car on the battery (with the slight charge that the alternator put out in order to charge it) actually ruined several computer components. As a result, we had to replace those components in addition to the alternator. What would have been a $750 repair ended up costing us $2,800 (including the battery that we didn't actually need. When I confronted Josh with this, he lied about the work he did and he gave me a different explanation about what he did each time I contacted him. APA is incompetent and dishonest. read more
