We ordered from here twice over the past couple months and are pleased overall with the quality of the fish. The first order about six weeks ago seemed slightly better than last weeks order, especially the poke. Both times we ordered 3 packages of ahi and a poke kit. We eat the poke the first night and last time cut the prime part off for sashimi. One of the things I like is that they trim the skin off. They also wrap each piece of ahi well so it doesn't leak. TIP on freezing and prep. We cut the ahi into steaks and wrap them individually then freeze them in packages of 4 or 5 steaks to use for one meal. Our latest way of preparing the ahi is baking them in parchment paper (you can buy it at Longs or Safeway by the Saran Wrap). I prep veggies like spinach, thinly sliced peppers zucchini, shiitake, ginger, and have jars of mayo, oyster sauce, chili paste, shoyu. Each person can make their own packet of veggies, sauce and ahi. Look on YouTube or google for recipes (papillote or cooking fish in parchment.)

True entrepreneurship is when you come up with genius ideas amidst a worldwide pandemic. Due to closures of restaurants, fishermen has a hard time selling off their inventory of fresh catches, Fresh Island Fish cane up with the idea of retail sales. At first, it was chaotic with the wait and organization of the sales. But within one weeks time, they setup online ordering and payment system and also streamlined the pickup process, while maintaining social distancing. Bravo to the Fresh Island Fish team! It's truly a win win for all. I am glad that I got to enjoy some fresh ahi to cheer me up. Eat local support local.

Line to pick up preordered fish

Fresh Island Fish is typically a wholesaler to restaurants however with the pandemic going on and so many restaurants closed or slower than normal, they began a retail pick up. At first (maybe around April), they began selling to the public on a first come, first served basis. I heard the wait was sometimes 2 hours! They quickly adjusted and now have online preorders (and prepayment). It seems they do preorders on a Thursday at noon (and they sell out within minutes so you need to be fast!). Before checking out, you must also select a pick up window preference: 8-9a, 9-10a or 10-11a. On Friday, you receive a confirmation email with your order number, pick up window and also which line to drive in when you arrive. They color code the lines (ex: purple and red lines) and some of the text in your email is the color of the line you need to be in so there is no mistaking where to go. When you arrive on Saturday during your pick up window, you get in the line as directed on your order email. You may either have your email on your phone or printed ready or even write the order number down on paper. First you will show your order number to a person who types it into their iPad. You then follow the line forward and at the front of the line, there are huge coolers that the staff pull your order from. The fish are all bagged and tagged by order number. This company seriously has made one of the biggest pivots I've seen in the pandemic. From changing their customer base to finding a better organized system for distribution - amazing!! Oh... and the fish is amazing, so fresh! My favorite is definitely the salmon!

Was referred by a coworker who previously bought fish from here and it was worth every penny! Bought 4 lbs of sashimi grade ahi for $26! We were able to get 3 very filling meals out of it. Fish was very fresh and packaged well. When we checked out online, we were able to select a preferred pickup time. We selected the last pickup slot and there was no line to pickup. Pickup transaction was very quick and smooth. Thank you Fresh Island Fish for selling quality fish during COVID-19! We will definitely buy again!

Home made poke bowl with salmon from Fresh Island Fish! The quality of the fish was very high!

Solid spot! I wanted to get some fish to make a poke bowl and saw this location so decided to swing in. Lots of options from ahi, oysters, crab meat, salmon, etc. They were busy with plenty of customers picking up their pre-orders but they moved so quick. Very efficient!

Among the hardships of 2020, Fresh Island Fish was a blessing. During COVID-19, they began selling fish directly to consumers (no middle man) due to the shutdown and closure of the food industry. I've ordered from them 4 times already and have not been disappointed! Back in April, I spent almost 2 hours waiting in a car-line to purchase fish on a first come first serve basis. Ahi was going for $4/lb! Unbelievable! Now, they have only accept online orders, which sell out within minutes, and pick-up from Pier 38 is organized and seamless. Fresh Island Fish has been amazing, especially considering that they weren't a retailer pre-covid. Although the prices are no longer $4/lb, the freshness is unbeatable and buying from them is supports local fishermen. As long as they keep selling, I'll keep buying!

Check out what they advertised as Ahi Poke Cubes. Really looked like AHI SCRAPS. Not going to order that again. It was fresh but it seemed like it was watered down during the rinsing, didn't taste right. Look at my pictures First off you sign up on their website, they email you with what they have available for pick up on Wednesday, you have a one hour window which is good, very organized pick up,fish wrapped and on a piece of refreezable ice jel pack. Complained and they said that I got the wrong order, picked up my poke cubes today. Their website is a bit confusing, if you want to add their kit to make poke it $3.00 more.

Put a piece of salmon in the air fryer. Topped it with imitation crab, onions, pepper and mayo mix and furukake.

So glad I discovered this business especially during this time. You need to be quick when ordering online because they sell out fast! I ordered the 4lbs of ahi and salmon. Sooo good! Can't wait to order more when we eat it all.

Keily H.

I love this company! Since this COVID-19 pandemic they started to sell to the public. All you got to do is go on to their website and subscribe. Once you subscribe they're going to send you emails when the next sale is going to be. I picked our order on Wednesday and boy can I say we were more than satisfied with our order. It was only $26 for four pounds of ahi. We also got the marlin (not pictured here) and it was so tender and delicious. If I could give them a million stars I would! You need to order and enjoy!

She agreed and was presented with the hair free 8.50 version. It is common practice to not only provide the option of replacing the product for the customer but to remove the charge for the hair laced food from the bill. This action not only expresses the restaurants remorse but signifies their desire to keep you as a returning customer. Unfortunately this did not occur nor was any Kama' Aina discount applied (resident discount). Nonetheless, as a travel provider for tourists here in Hawaii, I will not longer recommend or refer tourists to Nico's pier 38 from this day forward. So sad. I expected more from this Honolulu establishment.

We ordered pork hash, manapua, har gow, spring rolls, pickled cucumbers ($12.95) and a platter of char siu & duck. The dim sum was about $8/each, which I thought was very reasonable. My buddy really likes siao mai, and he said KSR has the best ones out of the places I have brought him to in HNL. On the other hand, the manapua was just okay: The ratio of meat to bao was low. I took char siu fr the platter and added it to the bao. We might have been better off skipping the baos and ordering a rice or noodle plate. The har gow and spring rolls were pretty good. The rolls arrived piping hot, and the har gow had a nice texture in the wrapper. Fourthly, the cucumber was fresh & crunchy, and had lots of garlic. I ate some with the char siu to cut thru the fat. Lastly, the char siu & duck platter was very good. They do a good job of putting some char on the bbq pork. The duck was tasty, but there were a couple of bony pieces. Regarding the ambiance, its big in here. Although they don't use carts, the aisles are wide. The servers were friendly & warm. I would def return for dim sum, but I also want to come for dinner. The food is very good, and the prices are reasonable.

I also liked that our first order came out on a sushi boat. Sashimi is extra per order, so I was fine sticking with the nigiri and the rolls we ordered were good as well. I'd probably stay away from the fried foods next time. About half of what we ordered came out burnt, so we let them know right away that we wouldn't be eating it (especially since they charge for leftover food). They were understanding and didn't give us any issues. Everyone was nice and helpful, especially since it was our first time there. The restaurant was pretty empty around 5 PM on a Thursday, but I imagine it gets more popular on weekends, especially with the BYOB policy. Since it's in Kalihi, I understand why kids' pricing is based on height instead of age, but it's something to keep in mind. My nephew is only 2, but he'd probably fall into the $19.99 price range. Parking isn't bad, but there's not much else to do in the area. We tried to walk off our food afterward but ended up just walking around nearby shops and the parking lot before heading home.

We got the crab leg combo medium spice in the everything sauce (I got a side in the extra hot) and loved the flavor! Only reason I'm giving it a 4/5 star is because of the service. The anticipating for things was just lacking. It wasn't busy and everyone just kinda hung out behind the bar. No spoons for the rice so we had to wait and find someone to get us spoons. Crab legs were dropped off and again had to wait forever to find someone for the crab leg cracker and pick. Just kind of killed the experience having to ask for everything and waiting. There's a sign to use your hands but it's kinda hard to crack the hard shells with just your hands and with the sauce on the rice you do kinda need a spoon.
