Turkey Chili
Carrie M.

The Turkey Chili hit the spot on a chilly NYC day. This was my first time eating at a Fresh & Co and it was a great experience. The staff was super helpful in suggestions and even let me sample the chili before I bought. Prices were good and I even got a short bread sweet treat for a sweet ending.

When selling soup, plastic spoons should be put in the bag as standard. Most people forget/do not know they have to pick one.

Turkey bacon egg and cheese English muffin. Quick and tasty. Kids devoured it every morning before hitting the sites.

The beef soup (Gao Lao Nuer) was the standout -- rich broth, super tender meat, and perfect for a cold day. Seafood dishes were also solid. The steamed seabass was fresh and simple, and the grilled seafood platter had generous portions. Dessert isn't on the menu, but what we tried was interesting and refreshing. The place gets busy, especially on weekends, but the food is worth it.

The cooking is traditional and authentic with modern touches, and well presented. In hindsight, I wish I'd branched out more, as we accidentally stumbled into a mostly all-beef situation: one diner doesn't eat pork, I'm the only seafood enthusiast in the group, and the child needs something "safe" like pad Thai. The non-pork eater loved his nuer yang (grilled NY strip) which was tender if dainty. My nuer Panang (brisket in Panang curry) had a richly flavored curry, but the brisket itself didn't quite achieve that fall-apart tenderness I had hoped for. My husband's nuer nong kaeng kiew (beef shank in green curry) packed a nice kick with deeply layered flavor, though something tasted slightly off. Mom's pad Thai with chicken again had an excellent flavor, a touch sweet, though I prefer the noodles to be less saucy than this version. Tables are quite small so the dishes crowded the surface, but we made it work. Service was great.

The first thing placed on the table was their famous aji verde, the vibrant green sauce. I couldn't resist dipping my fork in for a taste--spicy, fresh, and absolutely addictive. We ordered a spread that truly showcased the menu: Mama Juanita's rotisserie chicken, perfectly seasoned and juicy; corvina; and a ceviche mixto loaded with shrimp, octopus, calamari, red onions, cilantro, rocoto pepper, and lime juice. It was so refreshing and flavorful that I found myself spooning up every last drop of the citrusy marinade. The lomo saltado was another standout--a savory Peruvian stir-fry with marinated strips of beef, served alongside crispy fries. We also added a side of maduros, their sweetness balancing the meal beautifully. The ambiance was casual, comfortable, and simple, with unique walls decorated in intertwined tree branches that added a rustic touch. The service matched the food--our waiter, the busboy, and the manager were all attentive, engaging, and genuinely friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. Dessert was Tres Leches Cake. One bite in, and it basically melts in your mouth- no chewing required. It's sweet, soggy and by the end, you're not sure if you ate cake... or drank it--but either way, no regrets. Overall, it was a memorable meal full of bold flavors, great company, and warm hospitality.

Looked up Yelp reviews and was wow'ed by all the five star ratings. Therefore, I had to check it out to compare with my favorite burger in the area. Upon entering, the narrow shop provides a wide counter on the right full of board games and even a small Pac Man game machine. Guess some people come in and game a little while they eat. This shop definitely gives off the family friendly neighborhood vibe that locals may appreciate. As for the food, there were two of us, so we shared a Burger Classique and Cub's Pub. For some reason, the Burger Classique came out lukewarm and very dry. It was not enjoyable at all. Honestly, if this burger is the only one we shared, we would not come back again for sure. However, the Cub's Pub was served hot and quite delicious. The combination of Swiss cheese and caramelized onions, along with the black pepper aioli and tangy sauce, was great. Btw, our Sweet Potato Fries were good, but not as crispy as expected since we specifically requested "extra crispy." Regardless, they were satisfactory. On the other hand, the Fried Onion Rings were a fail. We didn't like the batter and the onions were barely noticeable. I would possibly come back for that burger or try the more Sylvester Smash, which is more of a smash burger. They also have a Chopped Cheese and hot dog that I would get next time.

They're hoping to open a rooftop space (separate entrance - not currently open!) and a speakeasy lounge downstairs soon, too. Warning: GRATUITY IS ADDED AUTOMATICALLY FOR EVERY CHECK. Since this is a nearby new spot in the neighborhood, we decided to check it out on a nondescript September Wednesday evening. We were one of only a few customers at the bar, although a large party came in later and sat in the dining area. The cocktail menu seems to be evolving as we didn't see some of the drinks shared on previous Yelp reviews on the current menu, and they have also added quite a bit of food to their offerings. Service was overall decent, but the the evolving drink menu meant the bartender was still learning the current drink recipes for each order, therefore taking some additional time. Unfortunately, the drinks did not really stand out. They were average, though boozy, and really just OK. I hope that it's just growing pains as they continue to evolve their menu, but unfortunately, the cocktail program needs some love. Adding fuel to the fire was a very generous unnecessary gratuity auto-added to every check.

Special shoutout to Genesis for always bringing the energy, and to Gigi--truly one of the best bartenders I've ever met. We started with the baba ganoush dip with the complementary Frena bread - Frena bread is a MUST! So fluffy and would go well with any dip. Baba ganoush wasn't our personal favorite but still went great with the bread, with a nice balance of creamy and chunky. Next were the seared scallops and shrimp kadayif - scallops was heavenly and I think we all agree it was our favorite dish - the sear had a perfect caramelization, super tender, and it went well with the spinach pesto which was not nutty at all, very light and fresh. Shrimp kadayif was very crispy and savory but the creamed corn and lobster bisque were a bit heavy/salty. For our mains we got the butterflied branzino and lamb terracotta - branzino was silky soft and on the milder side whereas the lamb was SO flavorful and juicy. The one thing is that the lamb comes with this flatbread on top of the clay pot which goes well with the lamb but some of it was undercooked. For dessert we got the knaffe as everyone was glowing about it and this hazelnut chocolate dessert that I cannot find the name of. Nonetheless, knaffe was so interesting because we've never had anything like it - soaked in syrup but still crispy on the outside with this mochi-like chewiness inside. We also subbed the honey lavender ice cream with strawberry prickly pear, and that was absolutely delicious. The hazelnut dessert felt like a giant ferrero rocher with this quince ice cream, which is apparently like an apple/pear but it had a slight citrusy flavor it, very refreshing and yummy. The takeaway: Frena has incredible ice cream. Inside of the restaurant is beautiful, and every once in a while the lights got dimmer for an intimate ambiance, lovely spot for a nice dinner (make sure you're ready to spend $$). Our server was also very cordial throughout everything, helping us navigate the menu and making for an overall great experience!
