Porterhouse Special Steak for four (4) people
    Michael J.

Tucked in the back of an unusual alley way in NYC's Bowery is Freeman's.A hidden gem not to be taken lightly and here's to a unique restaurant in NY. I met three of my old roommates and friends for 30 years here for dinner last week and was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful decor and atmosphere. We had a table upstairs and it felt like you were at a lodge in Montana! The waitress was great and we ordered some special cocktails, beers and delicious but expensive food We had artichoke dip with plenty of sliced toasted bread, side of fries , broccoli rabe and the Porterhouse for '4' at $225. To be honest it was pretty small and I was starving at the end of the evening after dropping a good amount of money - Next time I'll stick with the entrees and some beers but will take my wife back for a special date night - it is unique and the decor is quite rustic yet elegant

Food was great! I would come back for the food but we didn't have a good experience with our waiter. We waited literally almost an hour for our food to come out meanwhile other tables that came after us were being served first. I even had a reservation and everything so it's not like we were walk ins. Even before our food came out we were being told to put in last orders for the kitchen because it was 3:30 and brunch was ending meanwhile we had been sitting since 2:45 without food. If we go back again we hope to have a better experience with a different staff member because the food all had good flavor and we liked what we got.

My friend and I stayed at the hotel right next door and knew we wanted to stop in to the restaurant but we didn't have reservations. Our friend was able to hold us seats at the bar and I am so glad she did! Initially we just planned on staying for drinks so we split the oysters (sooo tasty) and cocktails (gone too soon!) My friend ordered the Mortimer's Manhattan and I was blown away. I highly recommend trying it. It was unique and so tasty. The bartenders here are amazing. They've really created some delicious cocktails. I enjoyed everything I ordered. We started with oysters and my friend ended up ordering more because they were gone so fast. Then we split the tuna tartare & the half Amish chicken. We were both so full by the end of it! We really enjoyed every bite...so much so that we came back two days later to try out their brunch! Let me tell you, that Nashville Hot Chicken could easily be split between at least two people. It was huge! I was traveling with a friend from Nashville and she said it was the best Nashville Hot Chicken she's had! I recommend getting reservations if you can. This spot has a really lovely rustic feel to it and the staff that we interacted with were all lovely.

The interior is really cute and cozy. We sat upstairs for Sunday brunch. The menu is big and had a lot of options to choose from. We ordered many things to try and share. The best item was the maple pancakes. Fluffy pancakes with maple walnut butter on top! It was the tablets favorite item!!! And fries were crispy. My friend said the English breakfast was tasty- I didn't try that. Everything else was mid: -Drinks were not strong - coffee/ latte/ and cocktails. -food was just okay. -service was also just okay, I didn't feel that our waiter was friendly or anything. -we were excited to try their stock toffee pudding but it wasn't hot enough.

Came here for a big brunch on a Saturday. We did not have a reservation, but only had to wait about 25-30 minutes which wasn't bad at all. The space inside is massive, with many rooms and multiple floors. All of them have a rustic, hunting lodge style theme going on with taxidermy deer heads all over. For food, we got different breakfast options as well as sourdough French toast to share (because they were out of sourdough pancakes ). I LOVED the Nashville chicken and waffles- they had an amazing crunch and good spice as well. It was almost too much food even though I was hungry, as the proportions are quite generous. The English breakfast and burger looked really good too. Overall, I definitely recommend this place for brunch- but come hungry!

came here on a Saturday for dinner and we were able to get a reservation last minute which I was excited about as this restaurant has been on my list of places to eat for a while! The ambiance and aesthetic is amazing. It's incredibly cozy and warm which I loved. The service was great. But unfortunately the steak frites was such a disappointment. I asked for a medium rare steak and it was pretty dry and difficult to cut into it. I should've said something but it tasted ok. Just overpriced and overrated considering it's supposed to be cooked really nicely. The pork chops and carrots were fine though. I would not come back for dinner.

A couple of months ago I stopped by here with a longtime friend from my youth just to check it and the alley out. Even though we were not going to eat, we were warmly welcomed and shown the restaurant by Alyssa. After that positive experience, we decided that this would be the next stop in our every month or so lunch Yesterday we returned for that lunch and the experience was equally impressive. We were greeted and seated by friendly Willa and served by Myles who knew to do the little things that make a good dining experiences into a great one. More on that later! We ordered a burger and a chicken bacon club sandwich. Because we had told Myles we couldn't make up our minds and were going to split the entrees, she (without our having to ask) had the kitchen cut both sandwiches in half before serving them. The burger was full size and flavorful (perhaps cooked a bit more than what I had hoped medium rare would be but still excellent) and the chicken club sandwich delicious. The club sandwich came with salad and the burger with fries. I am not usually overly enthusiastic about fries, but these were amazing - fresh, hot and flavorful! Thank you Freemans for an outstanding culinary experience! *I apologize if I did not spell the names of those to whom I gave shout outs! :-)

Just love the setting! And the coffee was perfect!

This place is an amazing find! Friendly and warm staff, the ambiance is charming, and classic, and the food was so filling! I had the apple cinnamon French toast! Each bite was mouth watering delicious! I cannot wait to venture back!

I had a reservation for 3 but was easily update it for 4 the morning of. This place was kind of hard to find... it's located at the end of Freeman Alley which is by Rivington street. You have to walk through the entire graffiti alley to get to the restaurant at the end. It's very "dark" and cozy inside. Lots of wood and it's giving rustic vibe. My friends and I were seated upstairs and it was basically a private dining room bechase no one else was with us. We got: - latte -black coffee - Norwegian Benedict (x2): I liked this a lot! The side salad was perfectly dressed. I do love a good eggs or salmon Benedict and this did not disappoint - Caesar salad with chicken - avocado toast: this looked hearty but hard to eat/cut I would come back again!

The host was especially friendly and could seat me right away. I wasn't loving how long I had to wait for my friend and they were really understanding. They allowed me to take up the table. My friend didn't love the French provincial vibe of the space but that's on him. I've loved this spot for many years. I was surprised the alley itself changing. It's made it feel gimmicky unfortunately. They should have real artists put up work instead of graffiti. Our server was only nice after we ordered a ton more food and champagne, so the service was meh.

I made it for the brunch menu, and although the brunch menu isn't as vast as the regular menu, the food was delicious. I tried the artichoke dip which was pleasantly surprising because it was still tasty without being greasy the way artichoke dips are typically thought of. Then I tried the Nashville hot fried chicken and waffles. The chicken was absolutely out of this world. It includes two huge breasts perfectly fried and breaded in amazing hot sauce that was just as tasty as it was spicy. The waffles only had 3 out of the typical 4 pieces tou would expect a waffle to come with. Then, we tries the cheeseburger which was absolutely terrific and left me wondering where they source their meat from. The only issue was that the fries were less than I was expecting from a dish whose only side was the fries, and they were a bit soft/soggy. I also had to request mustard to go with the pretzel bun, and although they had the perfect mustard accompaniment in the form of Dijon mustard, I wish it would've come with the pretzel bun already instead of having to wait until the last two bites to get it. The service, albeit during the brunch-to-dinner turnover, was still pretty good, although we had to ask for the drinks menu. The ambiance was absolutely gorgeous, and very well almost carried my grade there to a 5 on its merit alone. It has a very old-timey feel with gorgeous lighting at the end of what is known as "Freeman's alley" in downtown Manhattan/chinatown. There is a gorgeous long running mural of paintings along the entirety of the alley leading up to the front doors. The ambiance and decor is enough to gain your attention, but the food does not disappoint either, aside from a few things here and there that could easily elevate this "secret nook" even higher tha it already is.

We jumped over to the bar right beside and drank some girly drinks before getting the notification our table was ready. As with nearly every establishment in NYC, it is very close quarters in paradise lost. We stood at a table while waiting for seats at the bar to become available. Which, we didn't mind. I could see how this might be a little harder to get a seat for a bigger group if you aren't there before 6. It seemed that once a group got a big table, they camped out. The drinks were strong and creative. Friendly bartenders, good music, and yummy options for bar snacks. Also, the bathroom is a nice touch. Given the hell theming for the bar, the bathroom is a 180 and while using the Lou, you can listen to the bible being recited. Theres also a spooky surprise if you press the button in the bathroom. Speaking of the bathroom, it is at the bottom of some decently narrow stairs. So, try and stay sober enough for stairs or you may fall. Go to this bar. You will have fun.

We wanted to have after-dinner cocktails in a chill space, so we searched on our phones & saw Paradise Lost address via Google. We proceeded to walk down & was unable to find the establishment due to their being no front sign. After walking back & forth a few times, we saw another group walking towards the door & they confirmed the place. We walked inside the front door pressed a "doorbell" & lo & behold we gained entry after the previous group went inside. Definitely an incognito entrance. Once inside that door there is someone to greet you, & take your information. There is a forest/ grass/ jungle-looking foyer/ hallway we walked down to get to the next door. Before we knew it, we were near the "Paradise Lost No Vacancy" neon sign w/ an arrow pointing towards the snake-shaped knob door. It gets opened & a supercool speakeasy awaits.... Paradise Lost has mixed style table / seating arrangements throughout the place. A bar seating section, booth-style seating area, lounge- style seating area, etc. We got there a little after 7pm, so the afterwork crowd was in full swing. Paradise Lost has interesting atmosphere. At times a Gothic / Medieval Vibe, meets place w/ shipwreck decor, meets eleganct /club vibe w/ beautiful ceiling lighting, etc. Music played in the background. Staff are friendly, energetic, & attentive. We were pleasantly overwhelmed w/ the vast selection of tiki cocktails that were on the menu. Paradise Lost also have an intimate selection of snacks/ food menu items. This included Popcorn, Tater Tots, Devilled Eggs Rangoon Dip, etc. We ordered some cocktails served in unique tiki mugs & a bucket of popcorn to munch on w/ our drinks. The popcorn is flavored w/ Sea Buckthorn & Browm Butter, which gave it an special flavor profile. Our cocktails were well-prepared & nice & strong. Paradise Lost has individual unisex bathroom stalls & a communal vanity & sink area. The bathroom stalls have spooky voices coming from a speaker as you use the bathroom. I was so humorously taken aback, it had me laughing when I came out...Definitely a different thing to experience in the bathroom - lol. Before we left we watched one of the bartenders do a cocktail "fire" presentation for some patrons in a booth seated area. Wow.... Paradise Lost accepts walk-ins only, no reservations.
