Drove across Plano just to try this place and was pleasantly surprised. It has that intimate, neighborhood feel to it, where you just know the owner is behind the counter. My cheesesteak was terrific; it's a little different than those I've had in the past in other cities, but really good. Gooey goodness... perhaps a little too authentic for me? I have a special place in my stomach for cheesesteaks by Dominic's of New York, a stand that operates in the mid-Atlantic outside of most Lowes. They put a nice seasoning salt on the steaks as they cook, which makes all the difference in the world. Fred's is quite authentic, so no seasoning... but in all fairness, the cheesesteaks are nice and gooey and moist, with a good amount of flavor on their own. read more

Best philly West of the Mississippi. They fly their bread in daily from Philadelphia and it is amazing! If you are craving a good philly I can not stress to you that this is the best place in the areas. I like the 15th location the best which is the original. Being a native of Philly - I know what a good Philly cheesesteak consists of. If it doesn't have an Amaroso roll - don't even bother talking to me. Fred's ships all his meats and rolls from Philly straight to the store and they even sell Tastykake's and Herr's chips/pretzels. Yeah, the place isn't exactly somewhere you'd want to bring a date - but the atmosphere is all Philly. Each wall is dominated by one of the big 4 Philly sports franchises (Eagles, Flyers, 76ers and Phillies). The cheesesteaks are soemthing you could only normally get in Philly - it is pure heaven with every bite. And the hoagies are a close second - even including the capicola for the Italian variety. Something that is commonly missed at most sub shops down here. There is a pic of Metallica on the wall - autographed - where they came into the Dallas location of Fred's before they played one of their concerts. If you want an AUTHENTIC Philly cheesesteak, unless you go to Philly - the cheaper option would be to go to Fred's. You'll thank me for it later, trust me. read more

Word to the wise: CALL YOUR ORDER IN!!!!! I was meeting some of my northern working friends so I called my order in from 75/635 area. I had read the yelp reviews and figured I'd go ahead and splurge for the extra cheese in advance on my order. They told me 15 min - which ended up being exactly how long it took to get there. I arrive in 15 min, wait in line, pay for my sandwich (and cream soda - yum!) and they give me a receipt with my number on it. Probably 10 min later they called my number (so more like 25-30 min from when i called than the 15 that they predicted). I dug into my sandwich right away and it was pretty good. It needed salt and pepper as it was a little bland for me and even with the extra cheese it needed more cheese. In my opinion - cheese steaks should be juicy with gooey American cheese that threatens to drip on me and ruin my shirt. This did not have that at all, but it was still decent (not like the ones *I* get up north but it'll do). Next time I'll order extra extra cheese and see how that turns out. I didn't get a side order this time but I snagged one of my friends onion straws and it was yummy so I might try those next time. Downside: All the Eagles stuff everywhere - ewwwwwww but that's to be expected I suppose. read more

Wow! This was a great find. The food was great, tasted just like you would get in Philly. We had the Extra Meat Cheesesteak and it was perfectly cooked, and fresh. They do not pre-make any of the meat, it is all cooked to order. The prices are very fair. The fires are crispy. We cannot wait to get back! So delish! Last week when I was in town, my sister and I tried Fred's for the first time. After reading the reviews, we called ahead at 11:30am to place our order and got there 15 minutes later just as the cheesesteaks came out. She ordered the 6 inch #8 mushroom cheesesteak ($4.75) and I, the 6 inch #15 broadstreet cheesesteak ($4.95). We also both shared a side of philly toothpicks ($2.29; fried onions and jalapenos). While the size of the cheesesteaks were slightly smaller than I expected (not sure what I was expecting though), we were both so full after scarfing down the cheesesteaks. They were delicious and great with the hot sauce condiment that was at the table! As for the philly toothpicks, I didn't really like the fried onions but did like the fried jalapenos. I don't know any other philly cheesesteak places in town but am glad the only one here is superb! Just went here. Saw this on television on the DFW spotlight show, dfw foodies (on NBC) Ambience: The show definitely made it seem more glamorous. This particular Fred's was really small and dirty. I don't know why they have booths in the establishment. It seemed cramped. They also have this condiment stand where clearly it from a watch store (watch brand sticker on it). Anyways, this place is a dump i couldn't imagine how dirty the kitchen is. They have a creaked router in one corner sitting on a table next to some software called "website on mac". Good to know they're trying to work on that website (I'm a web developer. I find trying to use software to make a website funny and utterly a joke). Anyways, this place is a dive and i'm onto accepting that. What i did like was that they were showing the movie waterboy. It made the wait for our food more enjoyable. The things on the wall are really kitschy and outdated and dusty. There's some philly's jersey with stackhouse when they played for the 76'ers. None of the jerseys on the wall are great athletes either. I think they have a decent theme. I wish it was more elegant. Photos of philly would work better considering their food is very street like. Onto the food. Food: As onto the food, I'd say the best thing about this place is the value. Each sub is $4.75-6. They offer two options 6" & 10" and also double the meat on some subs. I recommend doubling the meat but skipping their fries. They don't look that great. They offer onion straws but i have no idea what those are. Maybe next time i'll give it a try. They clearly provide very cheap prices for their food. They have a good variety of cheesesteaks. It could rival the price of McD's. I think that was what they were going for. They have some interesting brand of chips that must be from philly , named "utz". They have interesting flavors like crab flavored or something like that. We got the food it a second to get; i didn't mind it takes a while to cook meat properly. The sandwich was tasty. It was a little under-seasoned. After adding some salt and pepper it made a whole world of a difference. I ordered the mushroom cheese steaks. The meat was finely chopped. Lacking interesting texture. Couldn't taste any cheese. I was hoping for the bright yellow cheese mixture. If you're ordering just order by their assigned numbers. It makes it easier. The chef & cashier know them by numbers and the name of the sub. We get our subs and you have to pick it up in their window by the cracked router. Service: The cashier lady and the cook were pretty friendly they greeted us when we entered and as we left. What i don't like is that the place doesn't have lids for their styrofoam cups. Overall: Not the most delicious experience! I may go one more time and try a different sub. Yummmmmmmmmmy!!! I have nothing bad to say. The girl working the front counter was sweet as she could be. Service was quick, especially considering how busy it got and there were only two people cooking. My only warning is for people looking for uppity places to eat. This is not it but that is not who they are catering to. It's obviously been around for a while and décor has not been "updated". If you want cheese steak this is the place with a couple buts.... If it's noon plan on waiting and not just a little while. If it's noon also plan on there not really being seating. The place is small with a lot of people waiting and no places to sit it stacks up fast in there. I'm going to say there are only about 10 4 people tables in the joint. Having lived in Phili along with other NE states I can tell you this is how cheese steaks are supposed to be. I personally enjoy the cheese steak with banana peppers and mayo. Fries are meh and so are onion rings... however I have to give a shout out for the fried jalapenos. They are small strips fried up like onion straws more or less. I'm from NYC and have family and friends in Philly. I spent my whole life, (except for the past 5 years I've lived in TX), traveling to Philly at least 3 times a year. I know authentic cheese steaks when I taste them, and this place is swimming in authenticity! I love the #2, which is the Philly cheese steak (meat, cheese, and sautéed onions). DELICIOUS! I'm definitely going back, and possibly often. It's a small little joint. Can be easily missed but believe me you don't want to miss this. The inside is small and even smaller for lunch but the have a lot of sports memorabilia. Plus while I was there they were playing Rush Hour 2 :) They have a lot of options to choose from and they all seem to be mouth watering. I ordered the #14. It comes with steak and chicken, onions and cheese. I added cheese wiz and mushrooms. They loaded it with so much cheese the bread was a little soggy, but that's not a complaint. The flavors were bold. Nothing overpowered anything. Seasoned to perfection. I can't forget about the crab fries. The take their normal fries and season them with old bay spice. They were so good. Gave a new flavor component. Expect a little wait time. They are cooking it when you order and plus it was lunch time. read more

I've been going to Fred's for 4 years and I have a good experience every time. The pro and con of Fred's is that your order is made fresh right when you order it. That does mean you'll have to wait a few minutes to get your order, but it is worth it. The menu is basically cheesesteaks, wings, or a sandwich. There is one billboard dedicated to the various cheesesteak combinations. Read carefully as many are variations of the same thing (IE some are extra meat versions of another item, some are with cheese, some are without, some are with peppers, some are without, etc). I've never had the wings or hoagies so I can't comment. The cheesesteaks are great. I normally get a 10" with cheese. The fries are ok, but nothing to write home about. The normal meat portion is more than enough. I recommend using the house sauce on your philly. Its a ketchup blend that's really good. They also have ketchup and ranch available. This place does get busy around the normal lunch times due to the popularity and proximity to Plano Senior High. I marked on there this place is good for kids but keep in mind they always have a movie running on their TVs. Last time I was in it was Casino Royale. I can't remember what others have been playing before. Point being if your worried about your kid seeing a Rated R movie and all that does with it then you might opt to do take-out or come sans children. read more

Hands-down, the BEST Philly cheesesteaks in Dallas. I've been eating here since they were on Inwood, across from Jesuit high school. They got kicked out to make way for the Starbucks and moved around a couple times. Looks like they've finally found a good home near the telecom corridor. Fred runs the place, obviously. He's a super nice guy, Philly through-and-through. And being a Philly-native in the middle of Cowboys country is quite a feat, though based on the lunch crowd, I'd say that most people overlook that fact. I've seen several reviews that complain about the lack of cheese. The cheese is there, trust me, and it's just the right amount. The meat is so hot that the cheese liquifies and sinks to the bottom. Dont be swayed by the bad reviews- it is ABSOLUTELY worth trying. They have a special sauce which is really good, however topping your cheesesteak with ranch and jalapenos is a great alternative. Stepping into this place got my husband and I all nostalgic about our college days in Philly. Considering how Pat's and Geno's were open 24/7, you can only imagine how many times we frequented South Philly to get delicious cheesesteaks... even on nights when it was only 20 degrees out! With that said, my husband and I think we know what a good cheesesteak is supposed to taste like (Pat's, Geno's, Tony Luke's, Jim's). We were a bit disappointed in this Philly Cheesesteak. Not to be cruel, but it tasted more like the Steak and Cheese sub that I used to get from the Chinese carryout place near my parents' house in Maryland! (which we love) If you don't know what a real Philly cheesesteak tastes like, this doesn't compare. But if you want a good cheesesteak that has no affiliation with Philly, this would do it. :) GREAT WINGS. Their wings remind me of bowling alley wings. Spicy and crispy and flavorful. YUMM. I have never been to Philly but I try the Phillies at all restaurants if they are available and these just blow the others away. The staff is courtesy, friendly, and helpful. It's true...the lady that took my order was not friendly at all. After she took my order, she went to 1 of the tables and put her head down...not sure if she was tired or was sleeping. There was no one there except for me and 1 other customer but no one thought to wipe down the tables which had crumbs on it. Well, the thing here is the food. The food is amazing. Place is a little rough around the edges, but that is part of the charm. You feel like someone is going to yell at you because of the various signs and things, but the service is always friendly, and the food is the best cheesesteak I've ever eaten.
