I didn't think I'd be so pleasantly surprised but I was! The filet was cooked to perfection and had that melt in your mouth deliciousness that only the best piece of steak can have. We also ordered the Greek style red snapper filet which was prepared just like it is in Greek Town in Chicago. The grilled veggies and potatoes were so tasty with just the right amount of char grill and the twice baked potato was pure culinary awesomeness. I have to say that for an old school steakhouse in Hammond, IN, it is as close to fine dining as you can get without the price you'd pay at Gibsons. We loved our bartender Claudia who was very professional and accommodating and made some delectable libations. I have been getting their ribs once or twice a month for many years. Today was the biggest disappointment. The ribs were sub par and the service has definitely gone downhill. We came here for dinner with my cousin for her birthday! She wanted steak and crab legs, but didn't want to go to far and didn't want to break the bank, so I went on yelp and came across this place, read the reviews and we gave it a try. By the way, they only have crab legs on Wednesdays I think. She was a bit disappointed about that, because they still have it on the menus, but it's not an option! My suggestion would be to take it off the menu and just have it on the special menu for Wednesdays. Any who, My food was great!! I'm not a fan of iceberg lettuce, so the salad, I didn't enjoy so much. Calamari was good, not chewy at all, wish it had that homemade type of sauce though, it was just regular cocktail sauce for dipping. The corn chowder soup was just ok, nothing exciting (food excites me) My cousins had the rib eye steak and they keep going on about how good it was. I wish I had gotten a bite from one of the steaks, but my lamb was so delicious I didn't even bother their food, except for the oyster rockafella that our friend had as an appetizer, that was really tasty as well. I also tried the shrimp diane my cousin ordered as an appetizer and boy was it spicy, tasty, but had that lil kick in the back of your throat! Lol We had margaritas they were good but not enough alcohol, our friend had the mai tai, that was good as well and full of liquor. Our server (I forget her name) was really nice and attentive, ( I live for good service) we were there well after an hour after they closed and they didn't seem annoyed about it, or pressed to get us outta there, they just started cleaning and shutting down around us while we continued to talk, laugh and enjoy our meals. My wife and I were in Hammond Indiana for a conference she was attending. When we checked into the Marriott, we asked if there were any good restaurants close by that we could catch dinner. The front desk hostess recommended a few places but she said one of her favorite was Freddy's Steak House. She said that it was one of the oldest restaurants in Hammond and served great steaks. We decided to give it a try. It was around 9:00 PM on Saturday night and when we walked into the restaurant, we were seated immediately. The hostess was pleasant sat us in a table in the dinning room. The restaurant also has a lounge are where you can eat. After we were seated, I noticed that is was truly and old school steakhouse. Not stuff or presumptuous as as many high priced steak house today, but it felt comfortable and relaxing. Within 1 minute of our seating, we were greeted by Lisa, our waitress. She was very personable and also very knowledgeable about the menu and the food. We order a glass of wine that Lisa recommended while we took time to determine what we should order. When Lisa returned with the wine, she helped us navigate the options of the expansive menu. My wife ordered the Rib Eye and I ordered the New York Strip, She asked us if we like the wine. We told here that her recommendation was great and the wine was excellent. The dinner meals come with more food then you can eat. (Relish trey, soup , salad, entrée and a side) Lisa brought us the relish tray and warm bread with honey butter and plain butter while we waited for our meals. The vegetables on the relish tray were all fresh and the bread was like eating dessert with the honey butter. Within a few minutes of ordering, we received our soup. I had the beef and noodle and my wife had the corn chowder. Both were delicious. Our salads arrived just in time as we completed our soup. The salads were fresh and crisp. Lisa was very attentive to our needs. We never had to ask for the water glasses to be filled or if we need anything. She checked with us often throughout the meal. Between every course, the dishes were removed from the table. The table was never left with anything we were not using. Excellent attention to detail. When they meals arrived, they were served on hot stainless serving platters and the presentation was wonderful. The steaks were cooked just as we had ordered and they were very tender and flavorful. I order a double stuffed baked potato that was unbelievable. My wife and I both truly enjoyed Freddy's. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. If you are looking for a unique dining experience and not a 2015 cookie cutter restaurant, this is the place. It's good to see that nostalgia is alive in Hammond, Indiana at Freddy's Steak House. Can't even comment on the food because we never got ours. We had been hearing good things and took my parents for a change of the same routine. As we sat down we did hear someone getting "comped" something as there must have been an issue with their dinner. I went for the South Shore dinner special and had to ask because the waitress new nothing about it, but she came back and said yes I was right. We all ended up ordering fish. We got our relish tray, enjoyed our soup and me my appetizer. The guy next to us got his steak, but his potato came without the fixins and he had to wait for the waitress who then flippantly told him yes there was butter on it, but he must have waited a good 7 minutes for her to bring the rest, and to boot he had to ask for her - you could tell he was not happy. We continued to wait for our fish. The people next to us finished their steak, a new couple came and ordered." There was a large group so they are doing the orders as they come" - NOT WHAT WE WANTED TO HEAR After about 45 minutes, I asked for our server and she said the food was coming. When we saw the "new couple" get their steaks my father asked for the Manager, Christopher. Christopher came over and proceeded to tell us about our food they had a large party and the food was coming out in the order received. I stopped him and said calmly. We have watched two couples come in after us and get their meals, large parties don't just "walk in" and we ordered fish which is overcooked at 5 minutes. He never apologized again. he said he would check. We decided at that point to get up and leave. I asked for my bill and he actually gave me the bill for our drinks- which he should have comped but I paid and I then told him it was all in his delivery and he is in a service business and he still gave excuses and never said I'm sorry. This is how dining out should be. We visited Freddy's for the fourth time last night, 3/13 with a 7:30pm reservation for four. We were seated in the Viking room, which according to our AMAAAAAAZING server Nico, has just recently been opened back up after being unused for several years. As other reviewers have noted, the ambiance at Freddy's takes you back in time. It is old school charm with superbly crafted food. Every single bite was perfection. While the food and surroundings made for a great dining experience, Nico sent us over the top. He offered great suggestions, was completely knowledgeable about the entire menu and history of the restaurant and in general made me want to dine at Freddy's every single night (I warned him that I may become his stalker). It's really sad that people try to take advantage of people and businesses especially in these times. People make mistakes and she fixed it and gave them a discount on top of it all. I ate there about a week ago and ordered a 10 oz fillet. The meal was marginal, at best. In lieu of a salad I had the "relish tray" - a disgusting reminder of what this once-notable restaurant used to be: one (1) scallion, two (2) small carrot sticks and one (1) slice of cucumber. The relish tray was disgusting - the paltry, but deliberate portions were insulting. After all, every item had been carefully counted. Is this how to motivate a customer to not return? Evidently. The double-baked potato was the only satisfactory item. The $31.00 fillet was middle-of-the-road. I could have had a comparable steak with eggs at any nearby Greek restaurant for $10.00 less. Growing up the The Region, Freddy's was a staple. The food was always delicious and consistent....until our visit last Saturday evening. We did not have reservations and were told by the host that it would be a 45 minute wait, which was fine. We made our way over to the bar and after 20 minutes of being ignored by the bartender she finally snapped at us and said "I'll be with you when I can get to you." Ok, then....After waiting another 10 minutes or so she reluctantly took our drink orders. Jim Bulanda was performing (and I use that term very loosely) or "imitating" as we heard him say, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, etc. I cannot express how bad he was. My salad was not edible, that's right, not edible. It tasted old and was brown and warm. The veggie tray was pathetic. We both ordered prime rib: one small and one large cut. When the waitress brought them out mine was a little tiny piece of meat, like a slice of roast beef, and his was 2 small pieces of meat stacked on top of each other. Are you kidding me? The mushrooms looked and tasted as if they came out of a can. Our waitress was nice enough, but we had to ask multiple times for things she kept forgetting to bring. Between the food and drinks we spent well over $100.00. Sadly, we will not be returning to Freddy's. The food and service have gone way downhill. Although I love the retro décor of the place, it is time the owners consider revamping and refreshing the entire restaurant along with giving it a thorough deep cleaning. read more

Very thick cut and perfectly cooked medium-rare. If you're looking for flashy and fancy Freddy's will disappoint. Freddy's is a late 1960's throwback frozen in time but still a classic. The outside doesn't look enticing but the inside atmosphere is warm and the menu has a good variety of appetizers and entrees. As you can tell from the reviews all experiences are not the same. Starting off we were seated right away even though everyone had not arrived. We were served water right away and the server introduced herself. When everyone arrived we ordered drinks and fried Calamari. The Calamari was fried just right, not crunchy with a really good red sauce. My family ordered Hennessey sours for drinks but needed to add a little more Hennessey for them to be just right. Our server Gina was very attentive and professional. She checked on us without being Overbearing, water glasses were refilled as needed. We ordered Lambchops, Pasta and Blackened Wild caught Salmon. The Salmon was seared just the way I like it not burnt. And the Fettuccini was flavorful and moist and boy do they give you a lot of Pasta. I'm assuming the Lamb chops were the bomb because my sister in law didn't leave anything on the bones and she's a picky eater. My buddy had the filet mignon and once again the chef was on point. I have no idea why people have given this place such unfavorable reviews. I have always known of this steakhouse, but figured it's in Hammond, so how good could it be!? Well, the answer to that question is DARN good. We began our dinner with a saganaki that was done right! Then we started to place our orders. They had a special for a 2.5 lb bone-in prime rib with potato of your choice, choice of soup, and salad for $28.95. Safe to say that's what I got. I can honestly say that it was one of the best prime ribs I have ever had anywhere else, and I've eaten it pretty much anywhere you could think. Just wonderful. My cousin got the king filet which was also very tasty! Excellent, friendly service with fast serving times. Will definitely be back again.
