Awesome food? Check. Great value? Check. Hard working immigrant owners who love America? Priceless. I had never stopped at Simon Sez before. Seems like I was always on the wrong side of 30, going east, and getting there just wasn't worth the trouble. Boy, was I wrong. It's worth it and more. This place is a hidden gem. I knew as soon as I approached the counter that I was talking to the owner. She exuded a pride that only a business owner would have. I told her that I wanted the best meal on the menu, and without hesitation she said, "That's either the Chicago Dog or the gyro." So, me and the party I was with split those menu items down the middle. So luckily, I was able to try both. The Chicago dog was the freshest I've ever had, which consequently makes it the best. Those toppings tasted as if they had been cut and chopped right after I ordered it. The side order of fries was hot and right out of the fryer. The gyro was a beast. Generous portions on the gyro and super tasty. The inside of the place is arguably dated but who cares? I'm here to eat great food, not for ambiance. And you are provided with great food. Add to that an owner who was genuinely interested in whether we liked our meals and you've got an easy five star from me. I don't get to the region that often but when I do I'm definitely going to be saying "Simon" again. read more

What a gem this place is. Ordered a gyro platter with fries for $9.42, which is enough for two meals. Meat is thinly sliced and fries are plentiful. Owners are Greek and very courteous. Menu has Greek, American and Mexican items at very good prices. Interior is decorated with pictures of old cars and motorcycles. This is a popular spot with bikers. read more

August 2021 - We have wanted to try this place for some time. I had a loaded hamburger and a small fry and my wife had a hotdog and small fry. The food was excellent! The hamburger was well prepared and the fries were hot. The prices are reasonable and the menu is extensive. The interior had a classic car theme. It looked like a retro diner and it was clean. Simon Sez is a great, independent restaurant right on Route 30 in Merrillville, Indiana that has great street food. Wonderfully colorful and authentic interior that is an original and fun concept. The VERY BEST Greek gyros in addition to full menu of fabulous burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches and countless other specialities. Dine in or eat outside on the patio. Very friendly and welcoming staff that are very happy you stopped by to dine here. What Route 30 needs is a lot more independent family restaurants that put their heart and soul into making their little dining spot so unique and the best. Do something different, spend your dining dollars at an independent place for a change rather than eating at every cookie cutter, chain restaurant along Route 30. Great find! Happy eating! Pricey but acceptable if the food lives up to it. The triple burger was $8.19 with fry's. The medium drink added $2.48 to the bill. It was fine. The gyros would have passed if the tatziki sauce was good. It wasn't. There wasn't a hint of cucumber and it had an unpleasant sweetness to it.. There was a generous portion of meat and for $8.89 fry's and a small beverage were included. Feta was not and a small portion was $1.65. We ate in and were sorry for that. The table was stickey. The napkin dispenser on the table was smeared and also stickey. Between the poor tatziki sauce and ickey table, I can't go over 2 stars. Simon Sez you can spend $22.71 elsewhere for a better meal. read more

I have gone to this place for gyros a few times and they are very good. The negative thing I have to say is the last time I stopped in for carry out a few weeks ago, no one was wearing masks. We have a pandemic going on and they are working with food. Come on, you can do better. You show you care about peoples health by wearing masks. read more

Six years later and this is still my go-to place for excellent gyros at an excellent price. They seem to have made things even better as the gyro has a ton of flavor and the portions are much better. There are lots of places in the area with good Philly sandwiches, but this happens to be my favorite as the freshness of the peppers really shines through. The service is always very prompt and the owner (Jimmy) runs a tight ship that the consumer can appreciate in the form of great food and a spotless restaurant. I don't know of any place where you can go and enjoy everything on the menu--this is that type of place. Be sure to stop by and try it out for yourself on the way to the mall or heading home from work. I try to stop in at least once a week. read more

Simon Sez doesn't deserve any stars but Yelp requires you to give them at least one. I went to Simon Sez tonight, and picked up a cheese burger, a hot dog with ketchup, fried mushrooms, and mozzarella sticks. There was no one thing about the meal that was right. The dipping sauces: marinara for the cheese sticks and ranch for the mushrooms; had there dates on them on the bottom, written on the bottom with a marker. The marinara was 5 DAYS past the date on the bottom!!!!! The ranch was 2 days the date on it's bottom. The fried mushrooms and the mozzarella sticks stunk of old oil and tasted of it too and the EVERYTHING was unbearably salty! This is the worst "meal" I've had in a long time. Don't eat at Simon Sez unless you want rotten food. read more

This place use to have great hot dogs...I have no idea what happened. Cold hot dogs and hard buns. The staff was nice about replacing them when I asked, but they should not have served them in the first place. The replacement dogs were hot, but waterlogged and tasteless, the tables were dirty and slimy. This place has great food and exceptional service. It's a little pricey but you do get free refills which is nice. The small fries that I ordered was a good large portion consideringit was a "small" which was great! The staff there are super friendly and treat you like family. I have been coming here for years but a recent discovery now has me mildly in love. For some reason I have longed for the soy burgers of my school cafeteria days and - I have found them...... at Simon Sez. Yes, this sounds crazy even saying it but I love it. To add to my joy, their ketchup seems to be also a score from the cafeteria gods (this is no Heinz). My brother raves about their taco tuesday. And to make matters worse their fries are served in a bag large enough to feed about 10 people, which I end up eating the entire bag. read more

The food - Excellent. Nice variety, greasy Greek-style eats. The tzatziki is flavorful, and the meats are well cooked. One order of fries will provide enough for a family of four. My kids are particularly fond of the milkshakes here, as well. The location- The place is pretty dirty. The store has that vaguely-sticky quality of being mopped with dirty water. The air inside is redolent with the very grease that makes the food so good. The bathrooms are, sadly, pretty much unusable. The service - The real tripping point, in my opinion. Filled to the brim with surly, moderately attractive teenage girls who act as if they are doing you a favor to take your order. These ladies seem brusk and disinterested to the point that I had begun to think all of them were the resentful daughters of the owners. Not so. Just snarky, entitled Lake Central princesses who clearly would rather be anywhere else, doing anything else. It is bad enough that I've avoided eating here for months at a time...which is a shame, because their chicken on a pita is some of the best junk food in the county. The best place in Merrillville to get the grease changed in your coronary arteries. Fries are overabundant and usually cooked well. Dogs are great. Just about anything you get here is good. After the ownership changed hands I was a little worried as to what would happen to the place. The classic car theme is great, car shows bring back the burger joint to Merrillville. Before the smoking law change I hated that the owner would sit at one of the tables and pollute the eating area. We stopped eating in, but got to the point that we quit going for a while. Always loved how clean this place is but recently bought gyros dinner asked for feta w in it. Got home no feta. I called cashier lisa says she put me on the list to get free one. I go back in a week and a different cashier says we were only written down to get the feta and nothing else. who does this? Good hamburger, gyros, and hot dog establishment. The rib tips are surprisingly good. The fries can feed a family of four. The mushrooms are scrumptious. Try the chicken on a pita if you desire a lighter option. This is our go to place when we've had enough big franchise fast food. read more

What a great place. Wish I lived closer. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is really personal and engaging, the food is delicious (lightest most delicious pitas anywhere) and the owner is a nice person. If you've ever loved anything about cars, you have to visit and I'm not telling you more because I don't want to spoil the surprise. But if you can get there on a Friday or Saturday night in warm weather there is yet ANOTHER surprise (okay, that one is not hard to guess). If you are headed east on Route 30 it's an easy in, if you are traveling west on Route 30 it's not as easy but it's worth it. Turn around! Go back. read more
