As a freshly sprung adult all those years ago, I used to think, I wish there was a class for people called "don't look like an idiot on the dance floor". While I never did find and admittedly, I didn't really search for either, a class aimed at young adults who don't want to look like an idiot on the dance floor, I somehow fumbled my way through my 20s, had a child in my 30s who is now a budding primary schooler. I thought to myself, what are all the really important things in life that a man should know how to do and somehow "don't look like an idiot on the dance floor" came to mind -- so here I am. A middle aged man sitting in the waiting area of a dance studio while my grade schooler learns how to dance. Sure, he looks cool doing it, he's learning coordination, he's part of a team of kids doing something together, he's getting his energy out in a productive way, he's cart wheeling, front rolling, hand standing, back bending, stomping, popping, locking, pointing in a hip-hop-esq way but what is most important here is that when he becomes an adult, he'll be able to roll up to da club and show up all those other posers who only wish that they "didn't look like an idiot on the dance floor". No amount of best value for your money, conveniently located hip-hop, tumbling, tap, or ballet classes can even compare to the satisfaction he will have when he's in his 20s and ruling the roost. To my 21 year old son making bad decisions in life, I dedicate this review to you. Now please just let me get through these multiple days per week watching you fumble around on the dance floor trying to keep up with the kids next to you while you shake your tiny little groove thing!

Our instructor also built on the basics in such a way that we felt like we learned a lot, even in just two lessons! She even caught footage of our practice dance, mostly for the purposes of reference when practicing at home, but it's also become a treasured memory (I included a little bit of it alongside our actual first dance from the wedding in the video alongside the review)! While we're no longer local to the Phoenix area, the lessons we had gave us more confidence, and have encouraged us to get into more dance in the years since our wedding. Everyone at this studio, from instructors to fellow students, were so nice and welcoming. Our instructor, Sarah, was fantastic. She put a lot into our lessons and built on what we had learned the previous week. She made us feel comfortable and excited to dance. The Thursday night parties are awesome! They have a different theme each week. You get to meet other students and practice a variety of dance styles. This studio also has group classes, which I am planning on checking out.

Meri and Kevin Bender are not only attentive business owners, but wonderful people. They treat every student and their family as their family. All the instructors project that care and attention as well. Not only is the Bender team devoted to teaching the arts but focus even more on their students being good citizens. The recent pandemic was a challenge for everyone, yet Meri & Kevin found a way to keep their studio open which was particularly important when the schools were closed to in-person learning. They have also facilitated combined travel and dance opportunities that our daughter has taken advantage of, i.e. dancing at Disneyland, and going to a summer dance camp in Colorado. At a…read morerecent recital, I witnessed parents volunteering at the flower booth openly gossiping about a young boy in front of other parents and children. One of those individuals was Sonya Vandervort. The comments were inappropriate, mean spirited, and showed a complete lack of respect and maturity. It is shocking that adults would choose to behave this way at an event centered around children. This kind of toxic behavior creates an uncomfortable atmosphere and reflects very very poorly on the studio community as a whole. Management should take a much stronger stance on addressing it. The other woman there was Kylie, who was also volunteering at the flower booth. She was kind, helpful, professional, and got me my flowers without engaging in any gossip or negativity. I feel very sorry for her and that she had to deal with those immature adults who aren't self aware.
