    Trapeze-ing

I like to find things to do that just sound fun. Perhaps will be good for photos, but mostly that they're different and entertaining. One day, a Google Offer came upon my email for Aerial Dancing.... um, that sounds perfect. I called to make reservations for my friend and I on a Saturday over the phone with Mark, who was the nicest person ever to converse with. He informed me the class we would be taking would be a taste of what they have to offer for aerial dance and it would be 90 minutes. He suggested a sports bra under a shirt that covers our armpits to prevent silk burns and because we'd be upside down. Upside down? This already sounds cool! He also suggested tights, yoga pants, or leggings that go beyond the knee due to potential silk burns. Why do silk burns suddenly sound so badass to me right now? The studio was over on the side of a strip mall and the inside looks a little old. But after we checked in, we sat outside the glass and watched the girls in the (very advanced!) class before us twisting and twirling up and down the silk and we were in awe. Our class consisted of 5 total students, which was the perfect shade of small. Our two instructors led us in some stretches to some top 40s hits until it was time to start on... the TRAPEZE?! I had no clue trapeze was included in this! Bewildered and excited, we learned about three cool looking (and low-hanging) tricks that made me wish I'd done some arm curls for the month prior, after which we moved on to the silk fabric suspended from the ceiling. We learned how to stand in the silks (mid-air, mind you) and do a few poses and an easy trick. It was so much fun! At the end, we got to go back and work on anything we wanted to go over again... or just do some tricks and take pictures. Fabulous! The prices seem reasonable and a consistant class would be an amazing workout. I loved this so much! Unlike me, if you decide to do aerial dancing, STRETCH AND EXERCISE YOUR UPPER BODY. My arms were pretty much useless for about a week after, not that I really cared. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

We love this place for our 6 year old. Prices aren't bad and they will soon participate in their recital!

Is dance dad a thing? 'cause if it is, it's not really something I go around advertising to people,…read morebut I guess you guys can keep my secret, right? Shhhh... As a freshly sprung adult all those years ago, I used to think, I wish there was a class for people called "don't look like an idiot on the dance floor". While I never did find and admittedly, I didn't really search for either, a class aimed at young adults who don't want to look like an idiot on the dance floor, I somehow fumbled my way through my 20s, had a child in my 30s who is now a budding primary schooler. I thought to myself, what are all the really important things in life that a man should know how to do and somehow "don't look like an idiot on the dance floor" came to mind -- so here I am. A middle aged man sitting in the waiting area of a dance studio while my grade schooler learns how to dance. Sure, he looks cool doing it, he's learning coordination, he's part of a team of kids doing something together, he's getting his energy out in a productive way, he's cart wheeling, front rolling, hand standing, back bending, stomping, popping, locking, pointing in a hip-hop-esq way but what is most important here is that when he becomes an adult, he'll be able to roll up to da club and show up all those other posers who only wish that they "didn't look like an idiot on the dance floor". No amount of best value for your money, conveniently located hip-hop, tumbling, tap, or ballet classes can even compare to the satisfaction he will have when he's in his 20s and ruling the roost. To my 21 year old son making bad decisions in life, I dedicate this review to you. Now please just let me get through these multiple days per week watching you fumble around on the dance floor trying to keep up with the kids next to you while you shake your tiny little groove thing!

I'm writing this with a lot of sadness. When my now 6 year old was 3 we started gymnastics classes…read morehere and we loved it. She found some really good friends and learned a lot, but once she turned 5 it felt like there was a huge shift. My daughter got invited to supersparks, sort of like a pre-team class, and had to leave all her friends, which was hard. Right away the coach was not a fan of my kid, she does have adhd, but she was so harsh. She threatened to kick her out. I would watch this coach give all kinds of faces and yell at her. Still she persisted. Once summer came when she was 6 all the kids were talking about going into hot shots, the next level in competition track. My kid came back almost every day excited to move up with her friends. She would say her coach would tell her she'd have to work hard to get to hot shots. It wasn't until my husband confronted the teacher to ask what was happening for her to tell him that all the other girls were invited into hot shots, except for my daughter, because she's "immature", you know.....unlike any other 6 year old. She gave us the option to stay in supersparks but heavily encouraged her to go to level 2 recreational, the classes she doesn't teach. So like a fool I kept her in supersparks and watched my kid not able to be pushed because all the new kids are a year younger. There's obviously a lot of emotion in this, I just could not believe my daughter was basically left behind after being there for so long. How much money did I put into their pockets just to be pretty much abandoned. I went to a recommended gymnastics place from one of her school friends and had them evaluate her, ready for the recommendation for level 2 recreational. Nope, not even close. She's been invited for a trial on their team. There is a lot of prejudice here, if you are not in with the owner get ready for you and your kid to be lost in the crowd. Heavy heavy cliques with the adults. I just couldn't believe that three years of knowing my kids, coming in multiple times a week, we were just kicked to the curb. We're heartbroken. I do want to say Jodi and Robyn, thank you for loving on my kids. I'm sorry I didn't have it in me to say goodbye the last time. Thank you for encouraging any and all kids who are a little different and show so much potential. Your company has a lot to learn from you.

I just can't with these people. The depths of their nastiness, incompetence & straight up dishonesty is really more than anyone can even comprehend, never mind try to endure. And don't forget that all of this began, because despite the teacher not even teaching my daughter's final class because she was out sick, like she was most out most of November, too, I might add, my 8 year old just couldn't cut it. This has swiftly turned into one of the most ridiculous & unpleasant experiences of my life. Don't even ask my child how she feels.... She is a third grader in 4th grade math, but she can't figure out how to sing a song & move her body parts in a directed manner. She's only been in dance & theater since preschool. We only left her last school because they changed her schedule, but this school would just never accept that we had experience, it just didn't fit their falsely perceived perceptions. But of course, none of this had anything to do with my child or her abilities, perceived or otherwise. This was all about someone's overrated ego. So petty & idiotic. The whole thing. Thank god I come from a family of lawyers. I'm not dealing with this dumpster fire anymore & I highly recommend that no one else makes the same mistake that I did. DO NOT enroll your child here.

At his suggestion we sent him 2 songs we were considering and James Lee worked out a routine for our favorite one. For 3 nights a week, for 4 weeks, we met with James Lee and danced our buns off in his private studio, located in a residential neighborhood. He is extremely patient and walked us through the same routines over and over until we got it down. My husband is a mechanic and no one would ever mistake him as graceful, however James Lee took us from simple steps to a full, choreographed routine. Nothing over the top (major cheese factor!) but enough so we didnt look like two dummies out there on the dance floor. I tell everyone now if you are having relationship problems to consider formal dance lessons! It takes a lot of work to function together as a team and make it look like you are having fun, and the right dance instructor makes a big difference when it comes to mediation time :-) A++ highly recommend James Lee Makepeace @ U B Dancin.
