I don't dance, but here I am. My (now) husband really wanted us to get a dance routine for our wedding, but I was hesitant. I put my foot down, he picked me up, and twirled me around. We got a ten class pack and Billie gave us the discounted price for paying up front for the classes. The experience: Billie began by getting an understanding of what we wanted our wedding to look like. We already had a song picked out and we told him. 20 seconds later, he had the beginnings of a routine ready. And so, we began to dance something of a foxtrot. All I really wanted in this routine was to be picked up and twirled around. I got to do that, and so, I'm happy. 5 classes in, and I felt like maybe, just maybe, I'd be able to do this in front of our closest friends and family. Billie is patient and sassy. Just the kind of person I need to motivate me to do something I'm uncomfortable with. I have a confession to make - I am not a dancer and I need a few alcoholic beverages to let loose and get on the dance floor to dance like no one is watching because quite frankly, I have little rhythm. But I was getting married in six weeks...and I needed to look like I knew what the hell I was doing for our first dance because all eyes are on the bride and groom! We walked in and the vibe was welcoming and friendly. Drew was our instructor and he was so easygoing and patient. He even had us videotape each other so we can practice after our lessons. He was really great to work with and we were having so much fun - surprisingly! I was only expecting to take a few classes, but after the second class, I wanted to learn more! They had great specials so we decided to take a total of 10 classes and had two choreograph dances. Drew worked with our schedules to make sure we were able to take all ten before the wedding. So the night of the wedding.... it wasn't exactly how we practiced because well, it was a smaller dance floor and all the adrenaline got to me, but it was exciting, it was fun, and all our guests were definitely entertained! I have been to Dance Starz muliple times. I am currently taking a Salsa class and I LOVE IT!!! My instructor not only makes the often confusing steps simple and easy to understand but she is very easy on the eyes too:). There is actually a group of us going and we love it because it is fun and quite the work out. I even broke a sweat last time I was there. The facility is very clean and all the instructors and customers I have had the pleasure of meeting have been engaging and friendly. Got 4 lessons through a Living Social deal. Lesson 1 - Bill (owner) was our instructor. Super nice and enthusiastic. Learned some good basic steps. Lesson 2 - Saw Bill again. Learned a few more steps. We declined Bill's offer of purchasing additional classes. Lisa called to reschedule lesson 3 as Bill was sick. I called the store back (after confirming when hubby was available) and Bill answered. Rescheduled lesson 3. Lesson 3 - Bill apologizes for his oversight, he must not have written our appointment down and double booked himself. Luckily, Julie was available. She was very nice, showed us a new move and some pointers. Lesson 4 - We were scheduled again with Bill, but without much explanation, were handed off to Geo. Very nice, mostly worked on pointers and nuances since it was our last lesson, but very helpful. Our impression was that Bill lost enthusiasm as soon as we told him we weren't purchasing additional classes. Now that we've tried it out and have a better idea of what we're doing, we do want to continue with lessons, but we will find another place. read more

I've been a dancer all of my life, and this was the first studio I chose here in Phoenix. My review, along with Ivonne W.'s, is overdue as well. I go almost EVERYDAY. The best thing about this studio is the employees! They're extremely dedicated to what they do and work SUPER hard. Very nice, fun people that I just love being around. They're extremely friendly and inviting, and make it feel less like a business, and more like a nice, exciting hangout. I suggest trying EVERYTHING. Zumba is great for getting exercise and getting/staying in shape, and is also really fun!! Try it with both Tina and Brandon - equally fun Zumba instructors that really engage you! Had Modern privates with Sarai, and she is absolutely a wonderful 'coach'. Try Salsa and Ballroom - they have really experienced instructors that are super patient and understanding, which is important in learning dance moves! The studio itself is very upscale and clean - nice sitting area, refreshment table with all kinds of coffee, great atmosphere, beautiful decor, nice floors. Favorite thing: music is ALWAYS playing. Even if no lesson is going on, music is playing, and it's really entertaining cheerful. AZ Dance Starz is a wonderful environment. The best place to go when you're feeling down - lots of friendly people (employees and customers alike!), lots of music, and LOTS of dancing - and coffee for when you run out of energy! read more

Bought a groupon with a few coworkers cause we wanted to relieve some stress after work. The groupon was 4 private lessons and 3 months of group lessons. I wasn't sure what to expect and came to my first private lesson quite nervous. I danced when I was younger and did cheer but had no idea what I was getting myself into with ballroom dancing. Once I walked in the door and was greeted by Lisa, my nerves went away. She was so bright, cheerful and welcoming. I then met Billy, the owner, and he was equally welcoming and energetic about dancing. They both put me at ease and welcomed me to the world of ballroom! I have since had several private lessons (Julianne, Yelena, Drew, and Lela) and every single one has been amazing. Each has their own specialty and brings something unique to the studio. I learn something new every time and even though I am a novice to ballroom they never make me feel bad or judged when I mess up. Group classes are a whole other level that makes this studio amazing. No matter your level or what you want to learn, they have it here. I have attended group classes taught by Geo, Paul and Julianne. I have learned everything from Waltz to country dancing. Every night it's something new. It doesn't matter if you are a newcomer or been dancing years, the classes are great for everyone. Every teacher here is great!!!! So, the first question is, why are you taking dance lessons? Is it to learn to move your feet, your body? Or is it to learn to move your body, feel the music and the beat and be able to connect and sync socially in a way free of the games that words and conversation do not allow? I have always wanted to learn to dance. I first started by trying to teach myself while in Medical School in Seattle by practicing on Broadway with the sidewalk steps in the rain (anyone who has been to Seattle knows what I am talking about). Sounds romantic huh? Well, not so much. It is dark, cold, wet, and you are alone. Even if you are with someone, it is dark, cold and wet. Not that fun, but you can learn how to dance.... Recently, I moved to AZ. I have always known how to talk to people and make friends, so social connections have never been a problem, but I did not know how to dance and connect with people in the way that only dance allows you to. Which is something I have always wanted to do. On a whim, I signed up with Dance Starz and I can say I could not be happier! I have been to other studios that mechanistically taught me the dance steps. The experience was pretty much like stepping on the feet figures planted in the sidewalk in Seattle next to the Jimmy Hendrix statue, minus the rain. But, this is not what I found at Dance Starz. At Dance Starz, I discovered a community of genuine people who are very passionate about what they do and passionate about teaching not only the steps and skill of dancing, but the communication and social skill involved in the movement. Truly nice people who support, encourage and help you move out of your comfort zone and into a new world and new way of interacting. They teach you the ability to and encourage you to take what you learn and move out of the studio and into the world of social dance. This is done through their own social dances and outings where the instructors help you get over the nervousness and create the bridge that is often missing between being able to know how to dance to actually being able to dance. This is my experience and I can't thank them enough for showing me this new and exciting world. They do a great job and a great service to anyone who truly wants to learn how to dance. From the novice learning how to move in the world in a new way and expand their life experience, to the competitor looking to sharpen their skills. Often, the novice looking to learn about dance, becomes that sharp, successful competitor under their tutelage (just saying). No pressure from the staff to do this, but it is hard not to go there when you are infected with their passion and love of dance..... This place is absolutely amazing!!! If you are nervous about your dance moves or have never tried dancing and have no idea how to get in rhythm this place will go above and beyond to make sure everything is right. We were greeted by Billy and he helped us with our first lesson. He did an amazing job and he had all the patience in the world and made sure we get it right before moving on. So we bought a certificate at the Bridal show for this studio - it was 3 lessons for $100 - we wanted to do a choreographed dance for our wedding and figured we would start with 3 lessons and then go from there before purchasing more lessons. These lessons were specifically for our wedding and I know from being at the Bridal show he sold lots of these certificates and I want to warn other brides. The 1st lesson went great we really liked it and figured 2 more lessons would give us a good baseline- immediately after the lesson we were sat down and offered to buy a package. Billy then let us know, oh yeah if we paid now they would waive x price and our first lesson would be free ie this lesson we just did that we had already paid for with the certificate we bought at the bridal show. We let him know we wanted to talk it over, feel free to reach out to us this Friday, Billy reached out to us that Friday and I asked a few details and it became clear that if we weren't willing to buy a bunch of lessons our willingness to invest in this process wasn't high and as a teacher he needed to know our commitment level and how much time he had to work with us. The whole conversation rubbed me the wrong way as I expected him to invest the same in us as any couple and not make it seem like we were just $ signs walking thru the door and if we didn't pay up he might as well move on. As a bride it was really disheartening as obviously if we are spending lots of money on our day we probably have no issue spending it on dance lessons however no bride should feel like they or their wedding are just another number walking thru the door. We opted not to return to complete the two additional lessons and have decided to research other options. read more

I had wanted to take salsa lessons for years, so I finally just signed up and could not be happier. I started with Billy (owner) who was so patient and encouraging and easy to learn from - and a great dancer. After a few lessons I started to work with another instructor, Daniele, who is a amazing. He is not only a skilled dancer, he knows how to teach dance (not the same thing) and makes me want to practice, practice, practice. He turns my mistakes into something positive. We were looking for a fun, supportive, and decently priced studio near our home to start our wedding dance lessons. My fiancé and I both do not have any formal dance experience and we were greeted by Billy the owner. He was enthusiastic and patient and taught us some basic swing steps and a bit of the foxtrot. Don't even bother with this place. If you schedule and dance lesson, they don't think you were serious. I just paid for 10 classes, no shit I'm serious. You could have at least called and verified. Clearly this place doesn't like money, or at least Susan doesn't want the owner to make money, so she keeps her job. Dance Starz is a great place to learn how to dance. We started lessons here about one year ago, and have been really pleased with the whole experience. When we started we both knew absolutely nothing about dance. Now we can dance several dances including the fox trot, waltz, tango, west coast swing, rumba, and cha cha. We have even performed in two show cases (something I thought we would never do!). Everyone who works in the studio is extremely friendly, and welcoming. The dance instructors (we recommend Joe and Ivy) are committed to ensuring you have a good time while also helping you to become comfortable as a dancer and improve your technique. We have also enjoyed the group dance classes as well. I just wanted to take a moment and thank Karlene (instructor) and Bill (owner) for getting my boyfriend and I into dancing. I had some experience in social dancing going in but my boyfriend had none and he was petrified to get on the floor. He was sure he had two left feet and would never be able to learn anything. Karlene was determined to show him he could do it.. and in every lesson she was terrific! Explaining and showing in very simple, easy to understand terms she helped him change those clunky feet into sexy dancing feet. Bill as the ever attentive owner stepped in and encouraged us, showing us even more clever steps. As a result, my boyfriend and I have enjoyed many hours of laughing and looking good together as we work on this new hobby. But in Dance Starz AZ I have finally found THE BEST studio, and even at a much more reasonable and affordable cost Having attended Dance Starz AZ for MANY months now I have undisputedly benefitted from observing its national and international class dancers who double as instructors of the same caliber. Get ready, shoe shufflers, to learn how to "really move" with a partner, and all the while in the most congenial and relaxing atmosphere possible created by its owner, instructors, and fellow students. To each other we have all been a very enjoyable and supportive group as we continue our rise from one level of dance skills to the next. Perhaps surprising ourselves even as much as we do each other. Eventually our advancements in dance skills simply become expected by us all as we anxiously look forward to learning even more The most unexpected joy (which I had not originally contemplate when I signed up) has been to meet and make so many new and pleasant friends. Nor should I forget to mention having the opportunity to learn, and even publicly perform (if we choose), our personal individualized dance routines and wedding choreographies that have been designed specifically for us by our instructors.
