So, the first question is, why are you taking dance lessons?
Is it to learn to move your feet, your body?
Or is it to learn to move your body, feel the music and the beat and be able to connect and sync socially in a way free of the games that words and conversation do not allow?
I have always wanted to learn to dance. I first started by trying to teach myself while in Medical School in Seattle by practicing on Broadway with the sidewalk steps in the rain (anyone who has been to Seattle knows what I am talking about). Sounds romantic huh? Well, not so much. It is dark, cold, wet, and you are alone. Even if you are with someone, it is dark, cold and wet. Not that fun, but you can learn how to dance....
Recently, I moved to AZ. I have always known how to talk to people and make friends, so social connections have never been a problem, but I did not know how to dance and connect with people in the way that only dance allows you to. Which is something I have always wanted to do.
On a whim, I signed up with Dance Starz and I can say I could not be happier!
I have been to other studios that mechanistically taught me the dance steps. The experience was pretty much like stepping on the feet figures planted in the sidewalk in Seattle next to the Jimmy Hendrix statue, minus the rain. But, this is not what I found at Dance Starz.
At Dance Starz, I discovered a community of genuine people who are very passionate about what they do and passionate about teaching not only the steps and skill of dancing, but the communication and social skill involved in the movement. Truly nice people who support, encourage and help you move out of your comfort zone and into a new world and new way of interacting. They teach you the ability to and encourage you to take what you learn and move out of the studio and into the world of social dance. This is done through their own social dances and outings where the instructors help you get over the nervousness and create the bridge that is often missing between being able to know how to dance to actually being able to dance.
This is my experience and I can't thank them enough for showing me this new and exciting world. They do a great job and a great service to anyone who truly wants to learn how to dance. From the novice learning how to move in the world in a new way and expand their life experience, to the competitor looking to sharpen their skills. Often, the novice looking to learn about dance, becomes that sharp, successful competitor under their tutelage (just saying). No pressure from the staff to do this, but it is hard not to go there when you are infected with their passion and love of dance.....
