After months of quarantining, I've decided to head to an actual restaurant. It's nice to eat comfort food after months of cooking at home. Fran's plays into your nostalgia. The interior portrays a 50s diner (they first opened in 1940). Unfortunately, the newly opened upper deck was closed so I couldn't check that out. There were obviously little customers present when we came in for lunch. The menu featured the legendary banquet burger, a test of decadence; for that reason I ordered it. It's without a doubt very filling burger with molten cheese and crispy bacon. In lieu of fries for a side, I got nachos. This is considered a very unorthodox decision and it shows; the nachos I received were reminiscent of the ones you can find in a Tostitos bag. It's a real shame. The staff and our server (Mike I think) handled COVID-19 procedures well as they wrote our names down to help with controlling the virus. I'm a fan of Fran's (whoa black betty). Classic and reliable location for a breakfast good dining experience. The last time I came here was about two years ago, and was surprised to see orange chicken and dumplings on the menu. Their egg Benedict's and omelettes are all solid choices, and I tried their tuna wrap and salad lunch special today ($10 + tax and tip). Their food tastes like something you can make at home, which could be a good or bad thing, but I think Fran's is a casual place to eat with friends. Service was very fast, despite being full for lunch. I had to leave for an appointment 20mins after sitting down and was able to pay and finish my salad, before taking the sandwich to go. I had to pay extra to swap out mashed potatoes for spaghetti ($13.99 + $2.50) which I found odd since it is usually served with spaghetti at most places!!! The dish came with vegetables and garlic bread as well. I wasn't a huge fan of the veggies since they were pretty bland and felt never ending (HUGE PORTION), but it added a good balance to the meal. I came here with my friend for brunch and I would highly recommend coming to Fran's Restaurant! Their portions are great and filling, the food is delicious, and the service is amazing. I had ordered the Chicken Waffles while my friend had ordered the Legendary Banquet Burger. The Chicken Waffles were exactly how I imagined them to be and better! The Chicken was fried perfectly so it wasn't too greasy but still was crunchy. It was seasoned well and tasted so good with the waffles. The waffles were so fluffy and tasted homemade with lots of love inside of them. Most restaurants come with a small container with syrup but Fran's had drizzled the syrup over the waffle for me. It was the perfect amount of syrup for me and I think if it were up to me, I would have poured either too much or too little. The only comment I have for the waffles is that they are on the buttery side. They taste delicious for the first 3/4 of the meal and then by the end, you'll feel a little overwhelmed and tired of the taste. The Legendary Banquet Burger was amazing though! I took a bite and all the ingredients tasted so fresh and meshed well with each other. It's really cool that there's a history tied to the burger too. On the menu, it said that they had invented the Banquet Burger 75 years ago! The patties are made from scratch and you could certainly tell! It was so flavourful and fresh. We had the option to choose between a side of salad and fries and we opted for the fries. They gave us a huge portion of fries (which were seasoned well and very crispy) and we had trouble finishing them all. Atmosphere 5/5 I wish we had gotten the chance to eat indoors because it has the retro 90's old-school vibes! Each table is a booth with pink-colored seats and turquoise backings. Because of COVID, we ate on their patio outside. Nonetheless, the patio was very lively and the buzz of conversation gave me some sense of normalcy. It's well decorated and despite facing the street, you could barely hear the traffic. Service 5/5 We had an amazing waiter. He had told us that if we gave him another 5 minutes that he could clean up the table by the corner where there was more shade. He went above and beyond to make sure we were satisfied with our meal. I know all their beef is AAA graded however, there isn't information on how their cattle are treated nor any information at all on where their ingredients are sourced. Considering their location, I expected that they could support more local farmers and purchase more seasonally than the restaurants in the suburbs but there was no information at the restaurant on that either. I loved their Monte Cristo which is like a grilled French toast sandwich with melty cheese and ham inside, we substituted the regular fries with sweet potatoes fries which was really really filling. Shepard pie and taco is also all really good. The warm meat lined at the bottom of the seasoned house mashed potatoes were spiced really well, and potato was soft and moist. The taco was a great vegetarian option that we had for our friend. I've been to Fran's Restaurant a few times but this was only my second time at this location. The last time I was here was a few years ago on a weekend at brunch so it was PACKED! We sat downstairs since both levels were open then. This time, it was a weekday evening so it was much quieter than before. We were seated almost immediately. Everything was fine. Our waitress (Aimee I think) was SO nice! It was lovely being served by her! The food however, was a little disappointing. The timing was not very good, as we had to wait quite some time for it, but both meals came out incorrectly. My meal was supposed to have salad as a side but came out with home fries and my grandmother's grilled cheese was made on the wrong bread. Thankfully, our waitress cleared this up quickly. My biggest qualm was with the fact that both mistakes were fixed within 5 minutes but the food took about 35 originally. Sounds like the kitchen is a bit disorganized. read more

We had to wait a bit for a spot but again, it's for good reasons. The prices are quite cheap too, especially important today with all the rising prices. The portions given are large too, you will never leave continuing to feel hungry. Everything on the menu here is great, I would not recommend a dish over another. While in Canada for a few days with my girls, we decided to grab a bite to eat on the first full morning after arrival. I can not remember the name of the place we initially went to, but they were closing soon and not very inviting since it was near time for them to close. Understanding, we decided to ask someone walking where we could go and she quickly said "Fran's" and pointed us in the right direction. This was the best breakfast meal we had while there! OMG, the prices were unbelievable for the amount and quality of food. I was impressed with the OJ prices being that they were mostly fresh squeezed. I say mostly fresh squeezed because when I saw the prep, they did in fact pour a little orange 'juice' from a gallon container. I asked the waitress what that was and she described in detail their process. She said basically depending on the oranges they receive, some may not be sweet enough, so they add a little 'help'. Seriously, it wasn't that much added, and it was so good. I mean let's be honest, there are a lot of restaurants that serve a fancy glass of Minute Maid OJ. So at least 90% of Fran's OJ was actually OJ. :-) Most of us ordered the Big Breakfast, which was really big and filling for only $12.99. What a steal. I went back three days in a row and ordered the exact same thing. When I tell you once I find something great, I am hooked...believe me. I shall not lie to you. I was HOOKED. I, the coffee drinker of the group, had coffee and I wanted more. It was so good with their table cream. Lastly, I would like to mention their syrup. So, you're in Canada and you want real maple syrup right? Well you wont get it here...BUT it's still better than the norm in the US. They will actually sell you a bottle of their syrup for you to take with you and we all purchased at least one. It was great and I have been using it since. Now once it's gone...I don't know what I will do. I guess I will need to make another trip and rack up! The service was great all three days and I had to leave a bigger tip because there is no way I would have received all that food for that price in the US. I don't know why I would ever come back here unless I really needed food at night - and even then, I'm sure I'd be happier with microwaveable food from Metro. I've been to Fran's twice for brunch/lunch and was left disappointed both times. The food is totally mediocre (don't order the french toast here, it's just thin slices of bread soaked in syrup!), although the serving size for the linguine alfredo was pretty decent. Even if the food were mediocre, I can live with that if the service is outstanding. However, don't expect good service here - everyone I've talked to always comments about the rude and unhelpful staff. Why forgo all the great brunch spots in this city (some of which are totally affordable) to come here? A staple for late night or super early eats. This place has been here forever and relies on the greatest spices in the world: hunger and desperation. It's 4am and you need a big breakfast? Frans. You just left the club and you need some steak and eggs? Frans. You don't want to hit up the fast food and you want to feel a little more grown up, but you don't want to break the bank? 24 hr frans. I have never been impressed with the food here. I promise I'll never try the steak and eggs ever again in my life. But if I'm drunk and my standards are low, I'll... probably get the steak and eggs. It's a Fran's, and a good one. Popped in for a quick lunch on a weekday, arriving just before noon to beat the rush from those working across the street at College Park. I love how Fran's has an extensive menu including all day breakfast. They are also great with substitutions, sometimes for a fee. I enjoyed my breakfast for lunch: cheddar and veggie omelette with brown toast and fruit cup. Friendly fast service, clean. Amazing looking cheesecake, but I resisted. read more

Went for a breakfast, the four of us on the Family Day Monday morning. Things were busy, but was assigned a table within a coupe of minutes. Our first visit to this iconic restaurant. Was impressed with the menu as it had a fair amount of dishes suitable for vegetarians. We ordered a Vegetarian Rainbow Benedict, a Vegetarian Omelette, Mixed Berries Pancakes and a Fran's Energy Breakfast minus the ham. The Benedict were slightly over done. The plate looked interesting and quite colourful. The mixed berries pancakes were huge and fluffy and were the best we have had in a long time. Four pancakes are quite big and may be a bit too much for a person with a smaller appetite. The energy breakfast was tasty on a croissant and had a lot more home fries than we anticipated. The omelette was just plain but had a variety of vegetables and asparagus was a welcome change. The vegetables were done perfectly. Would definitely go again and try some more things. This is one of the better bargains in Toronto. Everything was made very well. The eggs were cooked over hard when I ordered them over hard. They changed the French Toast to wheat bread when asked. Service was spot on, even while it suffers at other places right now post-pandemic. Saddest all day breakfast ever. So far from "Eggcellent" as the menu might have me believe. Had the saddest cheddar cheese omelette and homefries at Fran's. The food arrived quickly and was served on a plate that was too big for the serving size. The omelette looked deflated and the cheddar cheese looked like shiny and just unappetizing. It was a three egg omelette that looked like a tire someone let the air out of and taste kinda like that. It was bland and I added ketchup which I never do, but did in this case. A lot of it. There wasn't even a few bits of fruit to dress the plate up a bit - I had opted to forego on the additional toast that came with the cheese omelette given it also came with homefries. But the entire meal looked as if it had simply given up and tasted pretty much that way. My friend had scones that looked dry. She suspected they were microwaved and by the time she got to the second one she looked like she had also given up. One thing they had going for them however was an exceedingly polite server who was ready to take our order and top up our coffees. That wasn't enough to make up for the sad meal, however. The. Worst. Service. Ever. There aren't a lot of options at 3:30 AM, we saw that Fran's was more highly rated than Golden Skittle so we skipped the Skillet and headed to Fran's Bad move. I'd rate the food at Fran's but it NEVER ARRIVED. Never. After waiting over an hour fir our order, the waiter finally came by to inform us the he "had no idea what was going on In the kitchen...no idea when our food would be ready and we should probably just leave" I had ordered 2 scrambled eggs an a well toasted English muffin. I could have gone to Sobee's, taken an Uber home and made eggs in less time. I have been a waitress at various times in my life, and I know how things can be beyond a good server's control, but you always keep the customer informed, and you offer something complimentary if you can. A beverage perhaps? Some bread? Neither happened. What's worse is that when I finally tracked down the manger ( who seemed be either napping or taking a TV break in the back) he just gave to give me a condescending half smile mixed with a look as if I had interrupted his Netflix binge watching. "True, my food was late. True, there was no ETA on my eggs." His only explanation was that someone had quit. My response was"and??? Maybe you should inform your customers?!?" That's it. No semblance of an apology or offer of ANYTHING. Amazing. We grabbed our coats - commiserated with the other patrons seated next to us who were also waiting forever for food and then made sure to inform the people reading menus that there was no point.
