Don't be dismayed by their cramped seating or their tongue-in-cheek signage, this place is a Tucson staple. It is a take-your-parents-when-they're-in-town kind of place. Breakfast is served all day and is probably my favorite in Tucson. The huevos rancheros is my personal go-to and it has never disappointed. One downside: the food often comes out so fast I can't drink as much coffee as I'd like. An actual downside: their servers are often overwhelmed and slow to refill. Dinner on Taco Tuesday is another solid decision: $1.50 tacos with a free salsa bar and free pinto beans. Since its BYOB all you need is some PBR, a pitcher of lemonade and a few friends. All that and it is often one of the cheaper meals in town. A great place all around. read more

Bikers sit elbow to elbow with truckers, cowboys, and walk-of-shamers over steaming platters of huevos rancheros or the ever-satisfying sliced Sonoran dog omelette. Mexican specialties contend with American standbys, and while Diners, Dives & Drive-ins wouldn't find the menu artery-clogging enough to merit a stop, the bursting green chile burrito is worth a mild palpitation. The service is thorough (I know, odd word, but they're so busy that this is a compliment, not a put-down). What a dive! Seriously what a delicious dive and I loved it. We went for breakfast with my fiance and son and enjoyed some breakfast fare with a mexican twist. My breakfast burrito was delicious and I added chorizo to spice it up...so good! My fiance had minced sonoran dogs with eggs now I must say that was a disappointment because it was a minced hot dogs scrambled with eggs. However we loved this place and would love to go for lunch. There are a variety of breakfast foods sure to please everyone in your party, that being said this isn't a place for large groups... 2-4 tops in a party max! The service is fast and friendly and always there with a refill for your coffee, a must-have in my book. Ive ordered the french toast, the pancakes, early bird special and the huevos rancheros twice. All of it was great, my favorite being the pancakes with huevos a close second. Im giving it 3 stars only because of the cleanliness of the place. If it were based on breakfast alone it would probably 4-4.5 stars. The breakfast was awesome. I had Eric's Burrito which was outstanding. The pancakes were big and fluffy and also outstanding. I just cant get past the fact the place is pretty nasty. My wife swears she will never go there again. Im assuming the board of health doesn't do inspections. BTW: Do yourself a favor and eat inside. There were 1000's of flies outside, the waiter warned us but it was a beautiful morning so we ate out there anyway. Big mistake. read more

My experience in line with other four and five star reviews. Clean, neat, hole-in-the-wall serving a pretty good breakfast, and a pretty good cup of coffee and friendly service. I had pork chops and eggs over easy with hash browns and a biscuit this morning -- perfectly cooked, not greasy. As I was finishing up, I was offered a take-out cup of coffee (always appreciated). Food was delish and excellent portion sized, the service was great, price was right and the house salsa was fantastic. Stayed in Tucson on our way back to San Diego and found this awesome hole in the wall diner. Had the pancakes, homefries, biscuit and gravy. It was delicious and the staff was friendly and funny. They made you feel right at home. Great atmosphere and will always stop here every time we travel through. I have to say that the inside and outside of this place was nothing to write home about. It certainly could use some maintenance but it has that wholesome humbling feeling. I'm not one to put much merit into the way things look so... instead I think its best we let the food and personal interactions speak for its value. My band The Higgs (www.thehiggmusic.com) went into Franks the morning after a late night of playing music at a local Tucson dive bar. Well, needless to say we were all a bit tired. We walked in and the first thing the older Lady said was "you gotta sing if you want to eat." Well that was the right thing to say to us while "Imagine" by John Lennon was play on the radio. So we all started singing the song and she seated us at one of her largest tables with excitement and a smile. We talked amongst ourselves as we discussed how hungry we were and "Oh that looks so good" type of banter. We each ordered a $5 - $7 item plus a couple sides of this or that for the group. The waited was only about 25 minutes for everything to be brought to the table. We were shocked by the portion size and couldn't even eat all the food. The bill was $41 to feed 5 grown men and we had food for the road. The quality of food, service, vibe and music were excellent. We will be back the next time we travel to Tucson...that is a promise. My first meal in Tucson was knocked out of the park. Looking for cheap breakfast and stumbled into this lovely dive. Has everything you want in a no nonsense diner, but in addition it is excellent food and service, with personality and attitude. Their chorizo was home made and amazing. Franks is a tucson mainstay. I've been coming here for awhile and it reminds me of my dad. We use to eat breakfast at mom and pop diners and people watch. I just love it. You can watch them make your breakfast and there isn't a place that offers a more eclectic crowd. The food is good the service is decent and quirky just the way I like it. I've been to Frank's about 70 times. I'm not exaggerating. So I think I've had a pretty good overview of the place. A dive? It is; it absolutely is. "Fine dining elsewhere?" That's what the sign says, and it's absolutely true. "Eat and Get OUT!" their T-shirts say. Well, they don't mean that; the pace is fast, but they don't rush anyone. Thing is, there haven't been any bad days in all those visits. Only very good to sensational. OK, it shouldn't be all that hard to run a good short-order place, but here's the thing: it IS hard! Just think of all the crummy breakfasts and lunches you've had over the years. Not here. This place gets it right, pretty much all the time, with most of the dozen or so menu items I tend to stick to. Their hashed browns are the best I've ever had. Their pancakes are the best I've ever tasted. The omelets are among the best I've ever ordered anywhere. This is the best little dive in town! "Elegant dining elsewhere." I have sat at the counter on a wobbly stool and enjoyed watching them cook, dined at a table under children's art, and brought my dog to the "patio seating" for lots of pampering (they bring her water before they even talk to me!). I have enjoyed every dining experience I have ever had at Frank's. They have the best breakfast in town and the best wait staff. They are friendly. The customers are friendly. Today was my first time to Frank's. The service is excellant and quick. The employees all seemed genuinely fond of each other and the customers. The atmosphere was fun with quiet lively conversation from older people and youngsters. The food came hot and the portions were big enough for 2. It was $8 for coffee, bisquits and gravy. My coffee and water were kept full at all times. This place sets the standard in service! I would give 20 stars if I could. I felt cheap leaving a $3 tip. read more

We used to visit Frank's much more frequently but then moved around a little and are now back in the neighborhood. There is nothing wrong with Frank's but there's not that much great about it either. The food is typical diner fare which is good, plentiful and cheap. Service is quick, colorful and funny. It's cool to watch the single cook fly around the grill and whip out everyone's plates though - crazy skills! We'll be back eventually. read more

FRANKS!!!! Oh what a hidden gem! Franks by day, Fransiscos by night. Franks serves some of the best breakfast I have ever had. First of all, early bird special during the week gives you 2 eggs any style, potatoes and toast for $1.50. Are you kidding me?!? What a great place. Next, they have great eggs of the day. Each day a new style of eggs. If that's not enough they have the beefiest, most filling, best valued breakfast burritos. So so so good. Then when night falls, Fransiscos comes out of its shell to serve you great Mexican food and an insanely good chicken fried steak. Just don't think about calories. Just beware, there is nothing pretty about Franks. It's pretty grungy looking. Who care's, I ate countless breakfasts at Franks. I love you and I miss you. read more
