Time to go back and review. I like to revisit places after a few years and see what is different. Smoky Mo didn't disappoint. Places are successful because they stay the course and do what they do best. Today we went with the four meat platter, perfect amount for two people, brisket, pulled pork, turkey and sausage. With four side of coleslaw, mac and cheese, potato salad and cornbread. All meats are still sauced unless requested "on the side", but not so much to overwhelm the meat taste. Juicy flavorful pulled pork. Delicious smoked turkey. Brisket was just slightly dry but the sauce and nice bark made it enjoyable. The sausage was AMAZING, juicy and packed with flavor. Coleslaw in my opinion, could use a little more "wetness" but it was still delicious. What can I say about the mac and cheese and potato salad, people from the south, Texas to the Carolina's just know how to get it done. The "Texas Sweet Tea", if you are a diabetic do not drink, however this is a true southern tea, it's done the same all across the south, sugar with some tea thrown in. Four meats, four sides and two drinks with tip $50, not bad for two people, I've definitely spent more for food that didn't even come close to this. Once again Smoky Mo you did not disappoint. If you are a BBQ person this is STILL the best of Tucson. Get out and support this small local business! read more

I tried it because I was told that it was one of the 2 best BBQ joints in Tucson. Hmmmm, not impressed at all. I ordered a small combo plate of ribs and sliced brisket (sliced with the grain and not cross it as it should have been) and my sides were greens and coleslaw. I did not see the sign that said all of their meats were sauced, but if I saw it, I would not have had them put sauce on anything. As someone who smokes a lot of food, when I taste meat, I want to taste the meat and the seasoning and the smoke itself. The ribs and brisket were very tender, but all I could taste was the vinegar in the barbecue sauce. It completely ruins the meal for me because if I wanted to drink barbecue sauce, I would've asked them for a side of it with a straw. I did not taste the meat, I did not taste the seasoning, I did not taste the smoke. I also believe that if a pitmaster floods their product with barbecue sauce, they are hiding something. So I can't tell you anything about the meats other than everything tasted like barbecue sauce. For the side dishes, I got the coleslaw which was tasty and the greens. You can see the picture I took after I finished the greens and it looked like I had a cup of soup. I don't know why they wouldn't drain the water out of the greens. Since I was the only one in the restaurant, I was also surprised that nobody came up to me and asked me how the food was. They were all busy on their phones or talking to each other than to check with one of their paying customers if they were enjoying their food. The place itself, physically, I liked because it was a hole in the wall type atmosphere. I don't think I would've chosen contemporary hip-hop for my guests to hear. So that's it, I'm giving it two stars only because the tenderness of the meat, but definitely not because of any other flavoring I tasted. What a smoky bbq that pork ribs were so amazing tenderness, tasty n delicious!!! The meats pork were cooking right on with yummy barbecue sauce on top!! Excellent barbecue, the brisket was MOIST! Loved the sides and coleslaw as well as the big squares of cornbread. Service was very friendly. The only downside is there's not a lot of shaded seating if you want to eat outside. My brother got the ribs and ate the whole slab. It was a great lunch. We've been looking for a local BBQ spot and this was a great find! The signature bbq sauce tastes like it maybe has curry in it? But overall a great Kansas City bbq. This is a business which was a real pleasure to support. We were fortunate to have eaten here. Kansas City BBQ. Mild, not salty, fall off the bone tender. Brisket literally melted in the mouth. This is definitely a hole in the wall, but that can lead to some surprises. We got a combo plate and a sandwich. The sandwich was good, but they had just one sauce which was too tomato forward. The brisket on the sandwich was good, but the platter's brisket was a good portion of fat. The turkey tasted like deli turkey with no smoke ring. The mac was good, a little watery. The potato salad was good. The cornbread would've been great if they used honey instead of syrup. The price wasn't hole in the wall prices. Amazing BBQ hands down the best place in Tucson. Just wow. We just ate here for the first time and it was so good, very well done. The place is cozy and has a comfy feel. We ordered the 3 meats 3 sides combo with pulled pork, ribs, and brisket and for the sides, fries, mac and cheese, and potato salad. The meats were tender but needed more sauce. Walked in and was immediately greeted with a bit of an off-putting vibe from the lady behind the counter--definitely got the side-eye--but I chose not to take it personally and kept an open mind. We ordered the 2 meat, 2 side plate. Originally wanted the tri tip and brisket, but they were out of tri tip, so we switched to pulled pork. The portion size was ehhh As for the food: the pulled pork was absolutely perfect--tender, flavorful, and exactly what you'd hope for. The potato salad was also a standout--creamy, well-seasoned, and delicious. Unfortunately, the brisket was mostly fat, which was a letdown. The mac and cheese had a unique sweet flavor, but it didn't really hit the mark for us in terms of cheesiness--it's a little hard to describe, but it just felt like something was missing. The one thing I don't like about barbecue places is coming out smelling like I've just been smoked myself. That being said, I truly do appreciate this place because it's a simple menu and the prices were not too bad. The lady at the front was very friendly and I appreciated her promptness and getting my order ready so the service was excellent with that regards. They also told me originally that they ran out of chicken, but they didn't and made my order happen. I like the outdoor seating and the inside seating was not too shabby. But I would prefer sitting outside, especially if you can tolerate the shaded area and not coming out like smoke. The barbecue was pretty good and I just wish there was more sauce smothered all over my chicken. The meat was so juicy and tender and their mac n cheese was flavorful. They don't have a variety for sauces to choose from and their standard sauce is sweet (not spicy at all which I like) but it was a nice pairing with the brisket. The mesquite bbq sauce was outstanding. I ordered the 4 piece bbq. I got brisket, pulled pork, tritip and hot links with four sides. This is enough food for at least four meals. It came with 4 sides. Everyone was a home run. Perfectly cooked with a great Smokey flavor. I got onion rings as one of the sides and they were just like I like them. Great batter that didn't fall apart. I took the beans and Mac and cheese sides home with me. My friend got the catfish special and ate it all. Said it was one of the best catfish dish he ever had and it came with coleslaw and ff. He did mention that the ff were a little soggy but good. The person taking orders was friendly and very helpful. She explained the daily special and said it changed daily ( the daily specials are on their website ). We ate on their patio because their small dining room was full. Very nice patio. I ordered the two-meat, two-side entrée and chose brisket and hot link with greens and mac and cheese. Unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing. The "hot link" came as cut-up pieces of a mushy sausage, which was not appetizing or what I expected. The brisket was extremely fatty, and the portion size was very small for the price. For what you're paying, the value just isn't there-especially considering there's an additional fee just for using a card. The sides were underwhelming. The greens were just okay, and the mac and cheese tasted no better than boxed Kraft. Overall, the sides lacked flavor. Given the quality, portion sizes, and extra fees, this meal did not feel worth the cost. I wouldn't recommend it based on my experience. read more

It was a glorious feast! We sat at one of the outdoor tables and gorged until we could eat no more...then we brought the rest home! The staff welcomed us as we walked in to this very small restaurant. The smell of BBQ was strong and smelled mouth watering! I explained to the cashier that we were not wanting meals per say that we wanted to order some chicken, brisket, and pulled pork along with sides. She said no problem so we ordered what we wanted. Here's what we got: Chicken: tender pieces with a spicy sauce. Brisket: we felt it was missing the bark and the meat was dry. Pork: Not really pulled pork but more like chopped pork. It was flavorful and moist. We all agreed that the sauce was thick and really spicy for all of our tastes...realize that for others, it is perfect! We also got onion rings, which were fried to perfection and yes...when you take a bit, you get just the bite of onion and not the whole onion! The true test of onion rings! We also got an order of fries...nothing special and I prefer them to be crisper. We also got cole slaw (it was fair), potato salad (I didn't try it but one person said it was "ok", and beans. Several said the beans were good but the sauce was similar to the sauce on the meats. I also ordered a whole sweet potato pie, which was delicious. The crust was bit soggy but the filling was sweet and good. Overall it was an ok meal for us. Again, realize that for others, this is great BBQ...everyone's tastes are different. read more

I don't understand why this place has such high ratings. The brisket just fell apart into tiny pieces and had no texture, barely any smoke flavor. The brisket was also cut very poorly into non uniform slices, some pieces with far too much unrendered fat. The wings were okay, but not that juicy and not very well seasoned. The Mac and cheese was horrible; it was dry and the cheese sauce wasn't even sauce. It tasted like they added way too much flour to the sauce and like it was a reheated portion from days ago. The noodles were very overcooked. The beans were just pinto beans in the water they were cooked in without much flavor, not your typical baked beans that every other bbq place in existence has. They also weren't very tender. The BBQ sauce wasn't even that good. It tasted like a slightly Smokey ketchup. The service was mediocre at best, and the person I was with got their food in 3 minutes where mine took almost 10 minutes. The atmosphere was very bland. Absolutely would not go back or recommend this place until they figure out why the quality of their food seems to have plummeted. Before this last visit I hadn't been there since COVID. I LOVED everything about the place! The dining room is small but I was doing a pick up so it didn't bother me too much. The food was delivered quick! The one thing that stood out to me was that they actually serve Kool-aid! That just seems to fit with BBQ! I got the brisket and ribs for my 2 meat combo. The meat was well seasoned and really tender! The Mac and cheese was creamy and very tasty! I don't say that about many restaurant versions of Mac and cheese! Grade A+! This place is hit or miss... mostly miss. We've been there 3 times and we're not going back. This time, we were disappointed because we ordered plates with 1/2 lb meats and these weren't anywhere close to being a 1/2 lb... not even a 1/4 lb! The sausage was mushy and overcooked. The ribs were also overcooked. Turkey was okay. Worst of all was the strange curry taste that permeated the bbq sauce and the collard greens. This sauce tasted like a cross between curry ketchup you get at a German Brat stand and in a curry dish from an Indian restaurant. Maybe this is their style but it's not what I associate with BBQ sauce and I've had BBQ across the country. We went there because of the stellar reviews. When we first got there, the cashier gave us a "what are you here for" look. No menus, just a filthy blackboard. My husband and I ordered 1/2 ribs, coleslaw and Mac & cheese. The ribs were really overcooked and came with a gloppy bbq sauce that was just too sweet. The coleslaw was good, but the grainy textured Mac/cheese was over cooked with no distinct cheese flavor. Kraft would have been better. We ate the slaw, but left the Mac and most of the ribs in the trash. We ate on the patio where it was nice and shady, however the street noise was really really loud! The ketchup flavored BBQ sauce is the worst and it was smothered on heavy! Ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and burnt ends were cooked to perfection and you could literally cut the ribs with a plastic fork. Onion rings were probably the best I've had in a long time. Unfortunately I ordered corn bread and it smelled like dish soap I could only assume they didn't clean the baking pan properly. Service was good but when you pay at the counter they expect a very big gratuity for just handing you your food. Plus the door leading from inside to the patio was broken so every time anyone went through the door it slammed shut which was very loud and uninviting.
