Sadly....apparently Mo sold the business a while ago....that's how long it's been since we've been there. We were SO excited to get back there and SO disappointed. I love some good KC BBQ. My daughter has been wanting to try this place so we stopped by for lunch. As you walk in to the small counter area, there's a nice smell of meat smokiness from their cooking. Great smell! The chalkboard type menu on the wall has quite a few options. The special was burnt ends with a side combo. I haven't had burnt ends in a long while so I ordered this. My daughter had the pulled pork sandwich. For my side I got the mac n cheese. When asked, the counter lady said she is local to Tucson but the owner is from KC. Nice lady and very helpful. There is a small indoor seating area and a large outdoor covered seating area. We chose the outdoor area as it was a nice day. Unfortunately the many flies in the area also thought it was a nice day and they were very bold and bothersome during our meal. That was the only negative about Smoky Mo's. I recommend they put in some type of fans to disrupt the flies and not bother the customers. The food was great! I loved the burnt ends and the KC style BBQ sauce they were served in. The creamy mac n cheese was a great compliment to the spicy meaty main dish. My daughter liked her pulled pork sandwich as well. I must have ordered all the wrong stuff. I love collards but theirs were cooked with zero fat or flavor. No ham hocks. No salt pork. No bacon. Nothing. They were inedible. I also ordered a turkey melt and it was super dry and no sauce. Their sign says all meats come sauced so I was expecting something to moisten turkey breast. Even the ice tea was bad -- either old or instant. I'm saddened because I used to like this place. read more

Smoky Mo's is a very small BBQ joint that hits the spot in many places, but misses the mark in others. I went with family and was surprised by the outdoor covered seating. There are only about 8 seats inside hung building. No heaters are available, so it was rather chilly. It's a counter service place with a la cart and meal options. I went with smoked turkey (excellent), brisket (weird texture), collard greens (ok) and fried okra. The okra was outstanding. Fountain drinks, sweet tea and kool-aid are the drink options. It was busy, staff seemed slammed and it took a while to order but food came out promptly. We are not often in that part of town but would visit again. read more

Since I heard this restaurant is black owned, I decided to give it a try. First, a pattern that I have noticed with most black-owned businesses is lack of customer service. The hostess was somewhat unwelcoming when I greeted her, but I will assume that she had a bad day. For future reference, I really want my community to thrive in customer service when it comes to restaurants or any business. Just a good old fashioned family run business. The baby back ribs are the TRUTH. Fall of the bone and the sauce is perfect. The real reason for my five star review is because of the owner. I went here for a date night and when a family walked in with a young daughter the owner came from the back, took his time, offered the young girl samples and really just stopped the world to help a young customer. Not only was it amazing to see such a wonderful and innocent interaction but it has made me a customer for life. Just tried this place for the first time. My only sadness is that we hadn't tried it sooner! Friendly service at the counter- all the great options on the menu were pointed out for us. We went straight for the ribs, splitting a half rack. Man, were we surprised with how much food came out. We thought "fries" but we got "FRIES"! So good, like they'd been peeled and cooked on the spot. But the ribs... they are the star, and were oh so delicious. They fell off the bone as we lifted them to our mouths. Smokey Mo is a sleeper BBQ hit for Tucson, as a person who seeks out authentic BBQ I had never heard of it until recently but I am glad I did. We visited on Memorial Day, late in the day so they were out of ribs and tri-tip but I was able to try the brisket, hot link, pulled pork, and chicken wings. Right off the bat the hot link sausage was THE BEST I've ever eaten by a mile. It wasn't too spicy, it had great flavor, and was a huge link. The rest of the meat was also very good and flavorful. I personally did not care for their bbq sauce since prefer a tangy Texas style sauce, but it wasn't bad. The servers were super friendly and the price to portion was incredible as well. For the sides the onion rings and Mac & cheese were top notch, but on a return visit I will skip the beans. They weren't great. Overall Smokey Mo will go on the list of regular haunts that I visit. "If you like it, tell somebody else." I'll quickly say to those that don't like reading, "Go support this spot! Since I know how hectic running a small business can be, I was lenient in the rating on the phone ordering experience. We called in and were placed on an interminable hold while someone was ordering in person and hung up. Of course, when we called right back the line was busy. We got through and placed our order, letting them know we'd be there in 25 minutes. When we got there, the order hadn't been sent to the kitchen, so I had to wait. Buttttt, my patience and understanding paid off. I asked the difference between the tri tips I ordered and the rib tips on the menu (meat for dummies version = beef versus pork). I asked if they sold burnt ends, which is what I REALLY wanted. I was told that they sold them on Saturdays and had an "Aww man"' Tra Rags moment. Seconds later, the cashier, who I came to presume is the owner, showed me a container of burnt ends and gave them to me! Winning!!!! I have Herculean taste buds and I've noticed that soul food in Arizona is lightly seasoned. I'd have loved a little "bam" on the fried okra or the option of a dipping sauce. They were fried to "extra crispy" perfection as requested, as were the onion rings. In addition to the already mentioned items, we ordered brisket and baked beans. The BBQ sauce on the burnt ends put a smile on my face. As I was filling my cup with lemonade, I noticed that they had kool aid, so I mixed that in for a taste of nostalgia. When we got home and opened the container of meats, it was disappointing to see a squirt of sauce over the meat AND that it too was under-seasoned. We're from outside of Chicago, so are accustomed to certain things. I'm gonna soak the meats in BBQ sauce for a few hours before making sandwiches and/or wraps. We traveled almost 30 minutes each way just for this food and it was overall gas, time and money well spent. The location is small, but there is seating for several people and is kid friendly. The meat is sauced (all of their meat is), but that smoky flavor still comes through. We also appreciate that 3 rib bones are available in addition to half and full slabs since we like to have room for sides! The rib meat falls off the bones. The good-sized sides are pure comfort food. While we've taken our orders to go, we checked out the interior and patio. Dynamite! We don't know why we've waited so long to try this delicious local spot. I lived in Maryland for a few years and have had barbecue in various cities including North Carolina and Smokey Mo's is JUST AS TASTY as any of those spots. The meat is melt in your mouth tender and slides off the bones. The sides are fantastic, well seasoned and yummy. I'm a huge okra fan and the fried okra I could eat for days. Their mac n cheese was sensational (could easily also just order that for dinner!) and the coleslaw was refreshing, and a perfect balance of tangy and sweet. Other bbq locations in Tucson tend to over season their meats...not the case for SM's. In fact, the balance is ideal with perfect flavor from the meats and seasoning. Stopped into Smokey Mo today to give them a try. Located at the old Shari's Drive In on First Ave, it is a small place with limited indoor seating but appears to have an outdoor patio with additional seating. I've eaten barbecue all over the country from Texas to the Carolinas and up to St. Louis and as far as Smokey Mo goes, they get it done. I ordered the 2 meat 2 side combo, with pulled pork, brisket, slaw and mac & cheese and a drink. I will start with the sides... Mac & Cheese- Cheesy, seems like a creamy Wisconsin cheddar cheese, very flavorful. I prefer my noodles a little more al dente but it was good and not over cooked. Coleslaw- This coleslaw threw me for a hot minute. I prefer my coleslaw slightly wet, and this was far from but as far as coleslaw is concerned the flavor was on point. It could have used a sprinkle of celery seed, but was a nice palette cleanser. Pulled pork - definitely mesquite smoked. All meats are sauced but not so much that I couldn't get a nice plain taste of the meat. A nice treat not having a pile of pork fat on the tray, just a nice serving of pork. Brisket- again well smoked nice chew and a solid bark on the outside. Trimmed well and little fat if any. The sauce seems to be a ketchup based sauce with a nice sweetness and slight spice to it. Smokey Mo deserves to be packed around the clock so come on out and give them a try. I am for the time being going to give them a best of Tucson until someone knocks them off this prestigious perch. Barbecue was solid. Meats were clearly fresh smoked. The Restaurant is in a rougher neighborhood, but the food was solid. Sauce was okay but felt like it was lacking flavor. The woman at the desk was super attentive and gave kind suggestions when asked. The restaurant felt clean and well kept. The Mac and cheese was some of the best Mac I have ever had from a barbecue restaurant, which is often an overlooked side. The brisket was well smoked, but just not my particular style, and the rib tips were solid but felt over sauced IMO. Would recommend to someone who likes a more well cooked brisket. I'm normally not one to give a perfect score after one visit but Smokey Mo is incredible and deserving. We ate around 5pm on a Saturday and while it was almost empty when we arrived, by the time we got our food a line had formed. After eating it made perfect sense. My girlfriend got the two-meat plate with pulled pork and brisket while I excitedly ordered the burn ends special. Each meat was tender, flavorful and served in a reasonable portion. The price is right in line with most other BBQ spots I've eaten at recently and the employees were friendly despite obviously working hard for very busy-seeming takeout option they offer. The house sauce, which came atop every meat, was sensational! Slightly sweet and spicy it paired immensely well with the fatty bites of the burnt ends. The fries were also an unusual standout, most places that serve thicker-cut fries as a BBQ side are irredeemably soggy but these were crisp and well seasoned. The restaurant itself is small and heavily decorated with Kansas City Chiefs decor on just about every wall. There aren't a ton of tables inside but they have patio seating if the Tucson heat will allow it. I absolutely can't wait to go back and try more menu options! read more
